Over the years, I have seen very good - and very bad - prosthetists. Chris Kort and Prosthetics in Motion is, hands down, the best experience I've ever had. My journey to Chris started over 20 years ago, in a facility that I loved at the time. I was receiving excellent care - until I wasn't. That prosthetist is a superb limb-maker, but over years he and some of his staff became arrogant and the process, which needs to be collaborative to work - became a power play. Chris worked with this prosthetist, and takes a lot of the same positive approaches, but he has none of the arrogance. Nor does anyone else in the facility. Prosthetics in Motion provides excellent care without any drama. From the moment I first called Prosthetics in Motion -in crisis - I knew this place was different. The person who answered the phone was respectful and kind, and clearly educated in the the business. She immediately told me the person with whom I should be speaking, gave me the name of the practice manager and said Rebecca would call me back. I spoke to Rebecca that day and I immediately felt comfortable and willing to trust. She was knowledgeable in her intake and discussion of the facility and the process, and she gave me more than sufficient information, but she clearly also was an educated and effective listener. In the course of the first phone call with Rebecca, I felt hope that my several years of depression about my legs was lifting. The first consultation appointment was six weeks away, but when I stressed the urgency of my situation, she spoke to Chris and fit me into the schedule within 6 or 7 days. My initial appointment with Chris gave me extreme confidence that Prosthetics in Motion was the place for me to be. He is a smart, kind, talented professional. And the other prosthetists are, too. They work as a team, and it is evident that they really learn from each other, so even the less experienced folk are truly excellent. In between the arrogant guy and Chris, I used another prosthetist. He, also, is kind and smart and has no arrogance, but the facility simply did not have the depth of knowledge and experience with above-knee bilateral amputees that Prosthetics in Motion has. That experience and education, along with Prosthetics in Motion's deep vendor relationships, has once again made my life one that works really well and seamlessly with prostheses, rather than a life that is all about prosthetics and constantly filled with limitation. Finally, I cannot emphasize enough how pleasant it is to go the facility. It is airy and bright and filled with natural light. There are parallel bars and a full size ramp and stairs, as well as a treadmill and other machines and lots of room for walking. Last week, Chris spent almost an hour with me teaching me to walk down the ramp, something I have never been able to master in 25 years of using C-legs. One of the very best parts is that Sal casted me for my first prosthetic on a Wednesday and I had my leg 5 days later on Wednesday and it fit like a glove. I'm in the process of getting castes for a pin lock system this week because Sal said my residual limb is desensitized and ready enough for it, it. Will make my waking faster, and that he can make the pin lock at least a few pounds lighter. I am so confident with them that I know I will be using them and only them dor the rest of my life.

The experience, which could have been dreadful, was not bad at all and I am appreciative of that. The only negative is that it is rather hard to get through to them. However if you get their machine leave a message. That is what I did and they did always get back to me. And it is not like I neve r got through but the majority of the time I did get a voice mail. They were also good at reminder calls about appointments. All in all, this was a much better experience then I ever anticipated.

The lady…read morewho first fitted me and adjusted my brace was nice, but unfortunately, the knee brace did not hold up and I had to exchange it after two months. There was a lot of back-and-forth, and lack of communication in between. They also seemed a bit disorganized and couldn't remember what they ordered me. When I went back to exchange the defective brace and get fitted and adjusted for the new brace, the person I scheduled an appointment with had called out, so they had me wait an hour just so the person covering could come out and hand me the new knee brace in a bag without offering to adjust. Less than two months later I experienced the same issue with the brace condyle pad falling off. Left me feeling disappointed and frustrated. I do not recommend this establishment.

I was seeing an orthopedist at a hospital in NYC, after a wrist fracture. I had a cast on for six…read moreweeks, and once the cast came off, the doctor told me that I had the option for a wrist splint...something that I could easily put on/take off, as needed....say for while sleeping, or when walking around crowded city streets, until such time as I felt more confident/secure regarding my wrist recovery. My doctor's office described the splint they could provide as being 'custom-fitted', so I thought 'sure, why not'? ....Now I'm not sure where the disconnect came from...if it were from my doctor's office, or if it were from the East Coast 'rep', who apparently works in tandem with my doctor's office.... But all I know is this much: there was NOTHING 'custom-fitted' about the splint. When the East Coast rep entered the room I was in, she literally took the splint OUT OF A BOX. All she said to me was that, if the splint were too large, that she might have a smaller size for me. But...what was I to know?.... I've never worn a wrist splint. I didn't know HOW it should fit me...or WHERE the hard plastic underside of the splint should begin/end versus my own forearm/wrist/hand. Sure, the splint had three velcro straps, but then, ALL wrist splints - even generic ones you can buy at the drugstore - have adjustable straps... Either way, it was only once I left the hospital and had a bit more time with the splint that I realized.... it was NOT comfortable on my still-tender wrist. The splint not only hard a hard plastic brace to support the underside of my forearm and wrist but.... it also had hard plastic SIDES that were pressing against my still-bruised wrist. Even though my wrist injury fell under Workman's Comp, for some reason East Coast was not initially aware of this, and so they sent a bill directly to me. The charge for this supposedly 'custom-fitted' wrist brace?? $92. That's Ninety-Two Dollars. That is CRIMINAL! No wonder the US healthcare system is such a mess. What a total scam. But not surprising to me one iota, as shortly after I received the brace and realized how uncomfortable it was...and that there was nothing 'custom-fitted' about it at all...and that the East Coast rep 'conveniently' works IN TANDEM with the hospital, it is a classic US hospital-setting type racket....where one hand washes the other, so to speak. East Coast should be ashamed of themselves, for trying to charge someone $92 for something that probably cost them $15 to purchase wholesale.

So today was the day that I finally got to meet the team at A Step Ahead! The 10 stars I wanted to…read moregive them from the last review now seems not enough. After not walking for the past six years, Erik Schaffer had me up and walking within 2 hours of entering his facility. Thats's the short version for those of you that don't like to read :-) For the folks that want to I understand why I am such a strong supporter of a Step Ahead, here is more of the story. I was to arrive this morning - August 30, 2021, at 7:30 am. When I did, Erik Schaffer, the President, was waiting to greet me with an open door. Amy Palmiero-Winters, the Director of Operations, herself an amputee, (also recently named a Guinness World Record holder for being the fastest woman to run 100 miles on a treadmill) was there to hug me. Because, even though we never met, it felt as if we were somehow connected. It was like walking in and seeing an old friend. There were so many times over the past two years that I was ready to surrender to life in a wheelchair. I was done fighting. I had given up hope. But, every time I would get to that place, it seemed Amy somehow knew, and I would get a call or an email with an update letting me know that the battle was still going on, and they were determined to get me the leg I needed. There are no words to describe what today was like for me, and none of it would have been possible without A Step Ahead. When I went through the facility this morning, every person I met, from office staff to billing folks to the prosthetists in the amazing onsite lab, knew who I was. I was pretty amazed. Apparently, they all knew it because when they have a tough case, they all rally to make sure the patient wins. They don't walk away and take the easy wins, which I what other places do. A Step Ahead makes a commitment to their patients, and they fight until they win. I can only imagine the countless hours that they spent on calls, and writing letters and gathering records, and more calls - none of which they are paid for. They don't get to charge extra because the insurance company was terrible to deal with. Who does that in today's world? The only company I can tell you for sure that does is A Step Ahead. It may sound corny or even unbelievable, but they fight for what is right regardless of the level of effort involved. Of course, I wouldn't wish my journey on anyone, but the good news is if you just go to these guys first, you likely won't have to endure it. The thing is that this submission and approval was actually the very first time that A Step Ahead got to submit a clean request that wasn't bound by other factors from previous attempts by other providers - and it came back in less than 3 weeks fully approved. These people are the real deal. Take it from someone who has really paid the price for just taking whoever walked into my room at the hospital and taking a quick look at the insurance website to make sure they were in-network. I never thought about being an amputee - I didn't know what I didn't know. After today and putting on the prosthetic they are building for me at A Step Ahead, I am realizing what I didn't know. To say the difference is night and day doesn't do the situation justice. Erik Schaffer and his team are, BAR NONE, IMO THE BEST!! I may not have been to all of the competition, but I have worn something I shouldn't have worn, and now I am being put into something I should. So, the company that made that happen, and made it happen regardless of the hurdles they had to jump through to do it, is going to get my vote every time.

For about 15 years…read moreA Step Ahead looked after me very well, supporting the active lifestyle I like to lead, with walking, running and biking legs, including out of hours support on emergency repairs. Through my insurance company I would also get two new liners a year, at no extra cost. Then, this year, A Step Ahead wanted to charge me $2300 for these 2 liners and wouldn't explain to change in policy (there was no change in my health insurance provider either). I ended up going to a different company and now have my two new liners at no extra cost. In summary, A Step Ahead make fantastic legs and provide great support but be wary of pricing and don't be afraid to shop around.
