The Italian palazzo influence is clear in the marble columns and the central 'courtyard' (roofed, in deference to London's climate). The club sprawls off into various rooms, all fitted out as you'd expect with leather armchairs and floor to ceiling bookcases wherever there isn't a portrait of an illustrious club member hanging on the walls. As my host said, he likes to drop in here from time to time to escape from the 21st century (there's a strict ban on mobile phones), and it really does feel like stepping back in time. If you get an invite to visit or dine here, drop everything else, get your suit dry cleaned, and say yes!

There are also several bedrooms that can be taken by the night - of course it is in an excellent location for the West End, Covent Garden and more. There is convenient garage parking just around the corner in case you are foolhardy enough to drive a car into London (only at the weekends!!!!) There is a twin club that has recently opened in Los Angeles (which we have yet to visit). In order to enter the club you need to be a member or be invited. It is difficult for us to justify the (pricey) monthly membership fee since we live some 2 hours outside of London and so would likely only 1 or 2 times a month - we would LOVE to....but ... $$$ We have been twice - once to have a meeting and lunch with an agent and once for a small party. Turns out he was there with a bevy of stars putting on a Telethon to raise money for Haiti Earthquake relief. Cool enough, right? Well I thought so. It ticked my "celeb-spotting" box as well as my "good-story" box for at least the next month or so. After a full afternoon of work, my excitement turned from celeb-obsessed to food-and-wine-obsessed. (Hey, a girl's gotta have priorities, right?) And by 6:45pm, I was finally ready to call it quits. As per usual, I popped in my iPod, hopped on the elevator on the 4th floor and waited for the painfully long ride back down. Wouldn't you know it, the dang elevator stopped on the 3rd Floor. I mean, as if that ride isn't long enough already... add the fact that it's nearing 7pm on a Friday night and I'm about an hour late on my wine alarm. Blast. It was a large group of people, and as the first girl walked in, she casually said "Hey, how ya doin'?" in a beautifully familiar accent. I looked up, pleased to be in the company of one of my fellow compatriots, and was in the midst of returning the "hi" favor -- as any good, optimistic, and painfully eager American will always do, when I realized just who I was hello-ing... Wish they put in a bit more effort. Had 2 drinks, both were enjoyable and reasonably well-made cocktails it just feels like they kind of created the drinks they wanted to and named them after rather than done the drink and name as a cohesive effort. Had a fairly standard selection of beers at normal ish prices (didn't spot any craft beers) Others: They have 2 computers fully decked out with pro gaming chairs, mouse, keyboard etc... They're free to use when it's empty (as it was when we were there) so that's kind of cool I guess. They also have 2 xboxes. Not a lot of games as they're focused on a very limited number of eSports so the xboxes are mostly for fighting games. Overall: Place feels like it has a lot of potential. It's hard to get a feel for it without coming down for an event. Based on the London Barcraft facebook page, it seems they have now shifted from The Assembly House to Meltdown for many of the big tournaments, so I imagine coming here for one of those will be a lot of fun. I liked the fact that it was quiet - not as quiet as in a daytime library, mind - and the crowd a more sophisticated blend of arty. It may have become a lot more busy since as I keep hearing it mentioned more now. The layout struck me as a bit odd as it was very long and narrow with not enough seating for larger groups. There was also a dance floor downstairs, but noone was dancing on that occasion. We were all disappointed that the Library didn't stay open much beyond midnight - actually, a drawback of many a members club.

Members of the Club included writers such as Dickens, Trollope, Captain Marryat, Meredith, JM Barrie, Pinero and WS Gilbert, actors such as Macready, Charles Kemble, Charles Mathews, Irving, Tree and Forbes-Robertson, composers such as Elgar and Sullivan and artists such as Millais, Leighton and Rossetti. Today the Club has around 1,300 members including many of the most distinguished actors and men of letters in England. The original assurance of the committee, that it would be better that ten unobjectionable men should be excluded than one terrible bore should be admitted, ensures that the lively atmosphere for which the Club was so well-known in the nineteenth century continues to invigorate members of the Club in the twenty-first century.
