I cannot begin to tell you how much I hate a satay sauce, but THIS place is making a believer out of me. I'm in London for work and am staying around the corner at a local hotel. New Fortune is a block away and I've walked past it every day for the past 6, never bothering to step in. BIG mistake. I just ordered the "prawn skewers" from the starters list just to have a bit of a protein snack, and HOT DAMN! This might be the second best thing I've put in my mouth the whole trip. The shrimp is succulent, there are three skewers of grilled shrimp, and the sauce upon which they rest is delectable. The best part? The skewers are only €7.50! London only costs an arm and a leg if you're willing to give those away. If, however, you're looking for tasty treats that are budget-friendly, consider spending your money locally and investing in people rather than corporate spots. I will absolutely be coming back tomorrow for another serving of these prawn skewers (not to be confused with the shrimp skewers!). My only regret is that I ate them so quickly I didn't take photos. Being figurative here lol) Scallop is always hard to master, and it's so easy to get it wrong rather than right. Those popped in my mouth like nothing When the tofu seafood dish came out, it was bite after bite. The tofu is silken and you can tasty the braised sauce paired well with it. The shrimps in it was okay. As for the rice platter, each type of meat was on point. The roast pork and duck were better though, than the crispy skin pork. My friends who live in London took us here for dinner and I didn't have the heart to tell them the quality was below average. Service was fast and servers were friendly . Maybe cause I've had fantastic Chinese food in San Francisco and Toronto.... This place really disappointing and cost was high despite quality . So much so.. I forgot to take photos !! I am starting to see that a lot of ratings are quite inflated - but to me good food is good food. This restaurant is definitely not a 4 or a 5 star restaurant. Small Chinese restaurant in the Queensway area of London. I used to come here as a college student when I studied abroad and always ordered the roasted meats. What kept me going back there was as a student was that I could order 3 meats over rice (BBQ Pork, BBQ Duck, and the Soy Sauce Chicken) for roughly £7.00. We tried New Fortune Cookie as a takeout to our hotel. We had seen the restaurant while walking, and noticed the ducks and pork in the window. Our kind of place! Delivery was fairly fast. The food arrived hot and fresh. No drinks arrived, but this has been our luck ordering abroad. Doh. The fried rice was good, with a good meat to rice ratio. Mr. P of course had the BBQ pork, and noted that it was the better of those he had tried while in London. Shrimp were above average sized, and were cooked perfectly in an oyster sauce with veggies. I was wondering around this street looking for a Chinese restaurant I had been to 2x before on prior trips to London but could not find it. From what I could recall, this restaurant may have replaced it. After checking out a few of the Chinese restaurants on this street I decided to give this one a try. Lucky me! I ordered the seafood chow mein and Hot and Sour soup, two things I eat often enough that I use it to gauge the skill of the restaurant. They serve the real thing. No MSG, no shortcuts and no skimping on the seafood or meat with cheap fillers. The food was hot, freshly prepared and very flavorful. The portions were pretty generous. The restaurant was almost full when I had entered but they were still able to fill my order in a reasonable amount of time. I found the waitstaff to be friendly and courteous. This is a regular haunt of mine when in the area - I was introduced to it by friends who live nearby. A good sign is the large number of Chinese people who eat here, and the fact it is always busy. There is a larger upstairs eating area. The interior is functional, but they have proper tablecloths and napkins, and sevice is both efficient and friendly. I am vegetarian, so my exploration of the menu is a little restricted, but their salt-fried aubergine and stir-fried green beans in yellow bean sauce are always very tasty. After being burned a few times by craptacular Chinese in London, it was honestly a pleasant surprise to find a joint that dishes out solid Cantonese eats right next to Queenbury station. Not as fancy in appearance as Royal China down the street, but the stir-fried beef noodles and ma po tofu dishes we got were rather tasty. Service was very confused, but luckily for New Fortune Cookie, I'm used to my people's ways and wiles. Looking very average from the outside and feeling very traditional Chinese on the inside (i.e. expect rough service and cramped seating). I was really not expecting much from New Fortune Cookie Restaurant, however I was pleasantly surprised by how flavoursome, well presented, colourful and generous the dishes were. All plates were full to the brim including the roast duck (which was meaty) and the eel which had so many pieces that they overlap each other into a mini mound. There was even a dish served on a sizzling hot plate which is quite uncharacteristic of a Chinese restaurant but nice to see. A multitude of complementary orange slices and fortune cookies at the end of the meal also helps earn some 'brownie points' in the eye of the beholder. read more

One of my new favourite places! A friend recommended that we visit New Fortune Cookie for lunch, I was a little reluctant as I'm not fond of Chinese usually and also cringed at the cliché name. However as my friend has good taste, I bowed to his better judgement - and I'm so happy I did. There isn't anything exceptional about the décor, it's very much in keeping of what you might expect from a Chinese restaurant, you might have mistaken you've stepped into one in china town. You're greeted with paper table clothes, those chairs that I call 'carpet padded' cushion seats, and you're see terracotta coloured ducks hanging in the window. The food however is exceptional... We ordered the pork dumplings, pork with cabbage leaf, half duck, plain rice, fried rice and Chinese tea. At around £20 a head this was a bargain. The dumplings came crispy, perfectly golden and bubbled on one side and are by far the best I have ever tasted. If we hadn't already ordered a large meal I think we'd both have re-ordered a set for ourselves. The pork was pull apart, melt in the mouth and delicious. The duck was also exceptionally good, not dry and very tasty. I usually always order new dishes when I revisit a restaurant, in order to try a better selection of the menu and appease my curiosity, but it's a testament to NFC that I'd struggle to not order the same dishes again on my return. ...and return I will as soon as I next have the opportunity. read more

Actually I never ate at New Fortune Cookie... It's my usual Chinese take away because I am dead lazy and it is the closest to the tube and bus stop, so convenient for the journey home! I will admit now that they are not as good as Royal China (do they even do takeouts?) or Four Seasons but those are just like 50m too far away for my laziness. Usually I get some roast meats which are perfectly yummy [Cantonese Roast duck, Char Sui and Roast pork (with the crackling)]. They give you peanuts with them and sauce separate. Good. I like that sort of proper chinesey ness about it. And boy, are they skilled at removing the bones from your roast duck while respecting the integrity of giving you 1/2 a duck. You can request duck bones if you need it for soup. If I had stopped there, it would be nearly a 4 star and I would prob give them 4 stars. however, late on Sunday, after stuffing myself with ice cream, I decided what is really needed is fried noodles. Unfortunately I am VERY PICKY with fried noodles. I like them Super Super Crisp. I saw disappointment a mile away when the waitress looked a bit confused when I asked for extra crisped noodles, sauce separate- really for me, the only way to do a noodle takeout. They gave it to me all glooped together in 1 box. You see, by the time I took the bus home it was about 10 minutes and my noodles were overcooked and soggy. And there is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING good about soggy fried noodles. The sauce was tasty enough, bit too salty, but the noodles just completely let the dish down. The roast duck felt like it was a bit old as well, and skin was starting to be chewy. I will continue to come to New Fortune Cookie as my Siu Mai (roast meat) place during the day, but I dare say, next time; I will probably make the effort and go to Four Seasons or Royal China and try my luck there for proper cooked take out. read more

The best roast duck I have had outside of Hawaii. Hands down the roast duck here is incredibly good. It's fresh, delicious, juicy and fatty. Just the way we like it. The beef broccoli, fried rice and soup were wonderful as well. We liked this place so much we had takeout three times. I call it takeout not takeaway since I'm American. I know Chinese food well. My family used to live in Hong Kong. I know good roast duck when it hits my taste buds. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let appearances fool you. I don't need fancy interior decoration if the food is delicious and reasonably priced. We didn't need to spend a small fortune here to have a full stomach. The portions aren't stingy either. I really cannot get enough of the New Fortune Cookie restaurant. Yes, yes, I know that the service can be abrupt and I know that you may have to stand the queue at peak times, but I do feel that the food is worth it here! I was first introduced to this place by my Chinese Jamaican friend Phil, who now resides in Los Angeles. Every single trip that he makes the London must always come with a visit to the NFC. His favourite dish is the roasted duck - and with good reason! I really do believe that the duck is the marquee dish here. If the duck is a solid 9/10 potentially the other dishes that are on offer here are more of a 7/10 experience. I quite often see people eating lobster here and although I have yet to try it, it seems hugely popular. It may seem like a small point but absolutely vital. Nonetheless - the Egg Fried Rice that they served here is absolutely amazing. Perhaps a little greasy at times, but hey, what good food doesn't come without a good amount of grease??? As I've mentioned before, do not under any circumstances expect English level of customer service and interaction from the waiting staff. God forbid you are from America and expect that level of friendliness and attentiveness! The decor and ambience here is absolutely bland and non-prescription to the highest degree, so do not expect anything special in that area either. However, that is not why I go! Warning! Keep your receipt! I am currently in DISPUTE with the "New Fortune Cookie" Chinese restaurant in Queensway over a £9.00 meal which they charged £90.00 on my credit card. I very foolishly threw away my receipt, and now they're refusing to acknowledge the mistake. The manager says their policy is not to accept credit cards for amounts below £10.00 - but that is NOT what the waiter told me, nor was it written anywhere on the door or on the menu when I dined there. I had a very large Shrimp Dumpling soup for £7.00 and gave the waiter a £2.00 tip for a total of £9.00. How can they charge me £90.00?! My HSBC bank says they can't do anything without a receipt, because it was a "chip and pin" transaction. I will pursue this - its the principle! I may end up being conned out of £81.00. read more

I have totally no complaints about New Fortune Cookie. Its not a glam restaurant by any stretch of the imagination but what it offers it delivers in fantastic fashion. Food is always of the highest quality and, unlike Four Seasons down the road (which admittedly is worth braving for their spectacular roast duck), service is always friendly, efficient and warm and welcoming plus you can generally find it easy to get a table at any time. I've come here on numerous occasions both for a sit down meal and for my takeaways and I've never had any issues with the food at all. Its always tasty and very reasonably priced to boot. This is one of the favourite Chinese restaurants whenever I visit this area of London. The food is always consistently great quality and the prices are always reasonable. Within the last year, they also renovated the front part of their restaurant to share the appearance of other Chinese restaurants on this road with the various roast and BBQ meats hanging in the window. The best part of the meal is at the end when you get the fortune cookie to break open (one of the only places in London that does so) and get to share it with your fellow diners. There's no good reason for this, the location is great, just next to Queensway station and the service is fast, friendly and courteous; whether you're after a multiple course meal or a quick take-away.
