My husband and I had such a wonderful experience adopting our hound, Iggy. The people working were kind and caring. They gave us the opportunity to spend time with our pup, they answered all our questions and provided us with a goodie pack full of things he needed as well as toys he loves. Our adoption came with a microchip, 3 free training classes on site and one month of pet insurance which are so very useful. I want to reiterate how kind and diligent everyone was during our visit. We were asked a number of questions to make sure we were a good fit with Iggy. We were also given time to walk with him around the grounds and see his behavior indoors. It was a great experience. I am also really grateful to any organization that is bringing dogs (especially hounds) north to find forever homes, indoors with families. It is a kind and wonderful thing to help these dogs in need. But then to extend the service to offer behavioral training is really going that extra mile to assist families and their new pets with a smooth transition and tools for lifelong success. Horrible experience I've ever had. I bought a black kitten on Easter, Leo and the Landlord sent me a long pet agreement, a woman who works for Liberty Livery came and took my kitten until I thought I worked things out with the Landlord which I did. The Landlord even called this woman while in the parking lotwith Leo. I have all of Leo's paper work, shots and payment in my name proving I'm the owner of Leo. I bought food for her cat Luna and Leo. I figured Leo could visit and play with Luna and brought a large climbing and scratching post. I asked her if she was giving me my kitten back and she said, NO! I'm the rightful owner of, Leo. He loves me and I love and miss him. I called the police but they can't get involved. A woman at MSPCA knows the woman and was mad I called the police. I didn't call about MSPCA. This woman at MSPCA came out with security screaming like a "crazy lunatic" - you're not to come here again!!!! All this because on Easter Day- I turned around and saw a black kitten everyone left behind and took him home. The last time I saw, Leo he was living in a dirty house and the kitty littler box was filled to the rim and he was walking on top of it. I cleaned the littler a couple of times a day and added fresh litter if required. I would have grabbed him but they're 3 against one. They have a cat Luna, why steal someone's pet they paid for and all his shots? Leo could have visited anytime to play with Luna. All paper belong to me. read more

Ive adopted twice from them and have been very pleased. She hade Lyme disease and flea problems and tick problems but they were up front with me and I bonded with her instantly and took her anyway. She was free from Lyme disease after some treatment and we treated her with medication for the tick and flea problems but they and she was all cleared up in 3 months time. She was so smart and loving but now she is dying. Arbor Veterinary gave her the rabies shot in the wrong place and paralyzed her and she may have 2 days left she is in really bad shape. I can't even get her to eat anymore. She locked her jaw. I'm really going to miss her when she passes and I don't know how I'm going to come up with the money for cremation because I was scammed for $5000 and we have no more money. read more

My parents adopted a puppy from them who should never have been adopted out in the first place. They told my parents he had previously had kennel cough and was fully treated for it. This puppy was emaciated, and diagnosed with very severe pneumonia not even 3 days after being adopted by my parents. He was having problems breathing so they rushed him to the vet. The poor puppy, neglected by the spca, is now dead. My mom called them as soon as they got home from the vet with the puppy, telling them they need to pay the vet bill because this puppy has severe pneumonia which does NOT happen in a matter of a few days... the receptionist, manager, AND director did not give a f**** and basically told my mother tough sh**t. A report with the NH State Veterinarian is being filed, as well as documentation and support from my parents veterinarian, and they are also in contact with the attorney general. What the NH SPCA did was ILLEGAL and cruel to the poor puppy that is now decreased, and cruel to my parents. No human or animal should have to go through this ever again. read more

What an amazing place! They even have summer camps for kids to teach them about responsible animal care. They have a small animal room, educational room, cat and dog area and an outside area for the larger animals. Want to adopt a bunny? They have those too. So many animals need to be adopted! Please adopt don't shop. IF you can't then volunteer! What a clean beautiful place. I can't believe how the cat room smelled...clean! Like wow. I was so pleased and impressed. This facility seems to be chronically understaffed. The staff who are there are rude and dismissive. The volunteers are friendly, but the staff doesn't seem to want the volunteers talking to the public - I was talking to a volunteer and a staff member interrupted and had her go to another room. I have gone in a few times to try to adopt guinea pigs, but it seems they are always too busy and I am taking up valuable time from them. I would think they would welcome qualified adopters, but that does not seem to be the case. I will look for other places to adopt. read more

We live just north of Boston in Lynn, but after a TERRIBLE experience at Northeast Animal Shelter and not wanting to deal with a shelterless rescue, we decided to drive out of our area and give NHSPCA a try. I really can't speak highly enough of the facility and the people who work there. It was a clean and airy space with lots of light. All of the animals looked clean and happy. Every staff member was friendly and helpful and looked like they just loved the animals like their own pets. There's a short application that doesn't ask a ton of invasive questions and they let you walk a dog you're interested in all around the grounds without hovering over you. It was a totally stress-free process start to finish. As a bonus, they were totally cool about me being disabled. The whole place was wheelchair accessible and they didn't presume about what I can and can't do (which Northeast Animal Shelter absolutely did, ultimately refusing to let me adopt a dog from them). They noted that the dog was cool with my chair (some dogs find it terrifying) and that was that. As it should be, really. We were so happy with the experience, we paid more than the adoption fee called for. I know the money is going to a well-run shelter. read more

Really happy to find this local SCPA that is friendly, well-maintained, and completely funded by community donations. You can tell that everyone in the building was happy to be there, including many volunteers that were walking dogs, cleaning cages, and mopping floors. The shelter is clean, there is no smell and everything is in wonderful condition. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and were willing to work with me even though I had to visit multiple times and visit with multiple cats before picking the newest member of my family. They had multiple cats here to choose from; I had a hard time picking just one! They have several different types of animals, ranging from small like guinea pigs to farm animals like horses and it's easy to come in and view the type of animals you want. The adoption process was easy and they have toys and a limited amount of supplies at good prices you can get as well when adopting. They even spay/neuter the cat for you, make sure they're up to date on vaccines, and include that in the adoption price! On top of all of this, she's the best cat I've ever owned :) read more

After recently losing my 15-year-old Maine coon cat, I was looking for a place to adopt a new cat. I did not want a kitten, and I was pretty adamant that I wanted to adopt from a shelter or rescue rather than just searching Craigslist or the classified ads. After my first two experiences at Safe Haven in Wells and Cocheco Valley Humane Society in Dover, I was pretty frustrated with the whole thing. Safe Haven had a cat posted that I was very interested in, and she was described as being loving and in need of a good home. When I sent an email about her, I received a response saying she was feral and unadoptable, which was baffling to me considering I had seen her listed on Petfinder. I decided to skip working with them, since I don't like liars. My next stop was Cocheco Valley Humane Society, which was absolutely FILTHY. While I was greeted when I walked in, no one seemed interested in helping me find a good match... which was probably because there were a total of three cats available, and all looked sickly and terrified. Finally, at the recommendation of several coworkers, I drove to the NHSPCA after work one afternoon. I didn't have high hopes, and was ready to just give up, but from the moment I walked in the door I knew this was where I would be adopting my new cat. The volunteer and paid staff were all extremely courteous and helpful. I can't imagine why any of the other reviews called the facility dirty or smelly, because my experience was exactly the opposite- for being a place full of animals, it was nearly spotless and there was no smell whatsoever. After wandering through the cat pavilion, I was interested in one cat in particular and went to start the adoption process. It was a quick, painless process and all the questions were clearly explained and discussed with me. I was allowed to spend some one on one time in a private room with the cat I was interested in. She happens to be blind in one eye, and their on-site vet was more than willing to answer any questions I had about that. Bottom line, after less than an hour I left with my new cat, Shadow, and was beyond relieved to have found a wonderful new pet and to have the whole ordeal over with. Shadow has been with us for almost two weeks now and she is settling in nicely. I will never go anywhere other than here to adopt a pet in the future. read more

Actually had a similar experience to MD's. My mother is in her late 60s. She was visiting the area and wanted my help adopting a dog (she lost her last rescue companion of 11 years last spring). We stopped at the SPCA just to look around, we were aware that it closed at 4:00pm and mom just wanted to look in windows, and look at the grounds. She stopped a gentleman who was walking his dog around the parking lot to ask if he knew anything about adopting through the place. Sure, that can be a bit odd for somebody if they don't work there, but my mom was being polite and friendly, and thought maybe he had adopted a dog here, and has been underwhelmed by some of the rescue places near where she lives, so she was trying to see what other peoples' experiences had been, thinking perhaps he had just adopted a dog here. A young woman came out and interrupted, telling him it was time to go, and started telling my mom very rudely that the hours were posted on the door. I understand people want to go home, but it was only 4:05pm, and a brief enough question. It was just an innocent question; you probably could've been a little nicer to an older woman who was just looking for information about peoples' experiences at the place you work at, and more importantly, wants to give a dog a loving home. Have some pride in yourself, and in your place of employment. read more

Adopted a puppy here and the experience was great. They have a great selection of animals at this no-kill shelter. We were able to pick from more than a dozen dogs and adopted a three month old puppy. They had several; puppys avasilable as well as some older dogs. The staff was friendly and helpful. This is also a location where you cna adopt larger farm type animals. read more

I will never have business with this shelter again. If you plan to walk in and adopt same-day, you may have ok luck, but do not count on this shelter to help you with out of state adoptions or keeping promises. They are unorganized, unprofessional, they do not communicate with each other or their clients, and they do not seem to give a hoot who adopts an animal as long as it gets gone. My first interaction with the NHSCPA was May 17. I had communication with the staff over the weekend up to Sunday (May 20), as I was interested in adopting a rabbit named Sunflower, but I was coming from out of state and wanted everything to be in order. This rabbit was supposed to be a companion to my male, and I was under a time crunch since I plan to move July 14 to another state. I packed up my NM rabbit to go for a meet and greet, and gave them a courtesy call (per their request) letting them know I was on my way to adopt her. They said, "see you soon!" and off I went, my rabbit and two family members in tow, brimming with excitement. As I get to the shelter, I see someone packing up Sunflower (the only bunny they had at the time) and being congratulated on their adoption. I quickly walked over and said that I thought there was a mistake, since I had called not 2 hours prior saying I was on my way from out of state to adopt this rabbit, and had a scheduled meet and greet. They said they weren't willing to hold her and completed her adoption in the time it took me to drive down from Maine. Frustrated, angry, sad, and disappointed, me, my rabbit (who now has gone through a car ride for no reason), and my family pack back up and drive home empty handed. While I was at the shelter they said that they had some baby bunnies in foster, and they could attach my name to their file to reserve a baby, to make up for the fact that they had adopted out the only rabbit they had. I emailed them when I got home from my disappointing trip, and was let know that I could indeed reserve one. I picked one out, excited as can be. They said that the babies were nearing weight to be spayed and neutered, and that they would let me know when the surgery was complete and she was ready to come home. We kept emailing back and forth, but it quickly became apparent to me that I was getting the same reply, but worded differently, to every email I sent. They were unable to send me updates pictures of my chosen rabbit, they would not give me an exact weight they were waiting for. We emailed back and forth like this, and the days just kept going by with no new information available, May 22, May 28, May 29, June 12, June 17, and I finally asked if her spay could be expedited, since I had been told she was well old enough, weighed about the right weight, but her spay kept getting pushed back due to the shelter having "cats and dogs out of their ears", yet they were not willing to expedite a spay for an animal who already had an adopter lined up, who also had a date by which the adoption would no longer make sense. Now it is June 25, I have not had a single update since 5 days ago when I was told the vet would try to prioritize her surgery. I am moving in 2 weeks and a few days and at this point it does not make sense for me to adopt a newly spayed rabbit who is not yet healed, especially since she would be moving from NH - ME and then ME - PA just under 2 weeks after, it is not fair. So, NHSPCA, you have ruined your relationship with me. You adopted out the first rabbit on me, you have not been good at keeping me updated, it has been over a month since we first had contact, you have not seemed to make any true effort to get this bunny through her spay so she could go home with a responsible owner. I hope that this review will send hopeful adopters elsewhere as well until your business can be run professionally. read more

went there today to see a dog listed on the website. The dog was somewhat unsocialized, and I have owned a similar one before, but was told I did not have enough "experience" with unsocialized dogs. Well I had my poor scaredy -cat dog for about 6 years, and got him through all his terror and fears until he died of old age. Not experienced enough? This dog has been at NHSPCA over a year! The adoption person talked to me, left me standing in the lobby without telling me whether we were finished, would not even let me walk the dog, even though the dog was on the floor for people to walk by and look at. They were totally friendly & helpful, & when the cat we adopted turned out to be deathly ill, they said they'd take him back & nurse him back to health - and that we could either adopt another cat free of charge or wait until he was healthy enough to be readopted. Luckily, he came around on his own, so we didn't have to take him back, but we really appreciated the NHSPCA's helpful advice & willingness to work with us to make sure he was OK. read more

Most of the staff, I agree, are vey friendly and care about animals. I was completely confused by a question on the application ( I said n/a to if I needed a cat declawed because I had had cats before and do not know anything about declawing) and the staff member was very rude insisting she explained 3 times the question about their policy on declawing cats. I am completely new to this so I asked Her Why I would declaw A cat? Am I required to declaw a cat to adopt it? She stated they didn't do it an then proceeded to ask what I would do to declaw it. I was taken aback because she was not answering my question , so I said I don't know take it to a vet? I was so confused but the the woman "Joan " clearly didn't care because it was after 4 pm and seemed like she wanted out of there. She said why would someone declaw a cat? I said I don't know- if it scratched up furniture? Key words- I don't know!!!!! She then slammed her sheet down and said there were no cats for me because I would have it declawed for scratching up my furniture. I did ask for a manager but conveniently no one was available at that time but would call me today. I have not received a call. This woman never once asked me what I was confused about or thought to bring one of 2 other staff over to clarify. I had told her I knew nothing about declawing cat and never declawed a cat. I am someone who had specifically gone here to because I thought this was a place I could contact if I rescued an animal and had questions because they were knowledgeable and would educate me before I took an animal home. Instead this woman paints me as a monster because I am completely confused by her and she wants to leave work. This woman clearly wanted to go home and was upset I could not follow her questioning. totally unfriendly staff at the main desk. They asked if I'd brought my previous cat in for yearly vet visits and I had not. I was told I was totally unfit to adopt an animal and if they even considered letting me adopt they would check with my vet yearly to make sure I followed all of their guidelines. I was treated rudely and the woman was clearly angry at my truthful answers. I was totally taken aback. I would think this would have been an excellent opportunity for them to educate me in a manner that I would understand and accept. Instead, I got so angry I just walked out. Have been in this place three or four times looking at the puppies. First that hits you compared to MSPCA Nevis Farms and NEAS in Salem, Ma is the smell. This is probably the dirtiest shelter I have ever been to. I know this is animal shelter, but smells like poop and urine is not ok. Stuff is extremely rude! I would give zero stars if I could too. Staff is rude and ignorant. Had to surrender chinchillas after having them for 7 years because my daughter couldn't have them in the apartment she moved to. One of the chinchillas died because of their lack of knowledge on how to care for them. Got hung up on and treated poorly by the phone staff. My daughter went to pick up the surviving chinchilla when we found out what happened, she had to wait over two hours for a manager and was told as she was crying that it would cost her another $75 to get her chinchilla back, and sorry, they made a mistake and he died. If they had used the cage I provided upon surrender instead of "misplacing" it, none of this would have happened and Cosmo would still be alive. These people don't know what they are doing and they cover their inexperience and ignorance with rudeness. read more

My 12 year old son and I have been visiting and donating to this shelter since he was born. We are animal lovers and compassionate people. We have been talking, anticipating and looking forward to the day we can bring home a cat. The day came only to be deemed "un-committed" by a Jen. It's clean and well organized, the staff is amazing, and the ease with which you can interact with an animal you're considering is the best. The NHSPCA is an exceptional place for the innocent ones who have no voice. The newer facility is amazing with climate control for the animals inside. I am hoping that sometime in the near future, there will be another barn for farm animals. But in the meantime, I must commend the staff, volunteers, for their devotion to all animals. Also the Disaster Response Team who respond to emergency situations... way too many, but they are always there! After reading some previous responses & complaints about the staff not being friendly... I hope that people will try to understand that the staff & volunteers endure many issues of incoming animals being seized or surrendered from abuse or neglect, through no fault of their own. It can be SO OVERWHELMING for the staff, (who try not to show their pain & frustration) but also for the animals who have suffered. This is an amazing facility that I am very proud to support. I have rescued many animals in the past, and wanted this to be a good experience. I was willing to deal with the condescending and rude staff, but was completely stunned at the whole experience after adopting a dog. While she did have medical issues that I was willing to deal with, she was grossly misrepresented as housebroken. I had three veterinarians confirm for me that at an advanced age (she was 7), there was very little hope of ever training her inside. It broke our hearts, but we were forced to return her. The return policy for undisclosed/unresolveable medical issues is within 14 days. We returned her on day 7. Were told we were due the refund, but the "manager" had to approve it, and she wasn't in. We were told there would be a phone call. We have, at this point, reached out numerous times via phone and walk-in, and still can't seem to ever catch a manager on duty. We even offered to take a partial refund and generously donate the rest to what we actually still believe is a worthy cause. All of this to say, BUYER BEWARE. The "return policy" of 14 days is simply not honored. read more

Had a terrible experience here. There was a young man I spoke to who was nice, but everyone else there was rude and disrespectful. First off I was not aware that there was a 375 dollar adoption fee, so when my boyfriend and I stopped by and fell in love with one of the dogs we were not prepared for the fee. We went home, went over our finances and determined we were willing to pay that kind of money to adopt this adorable pup. I went back later in the day to go through with the adoption process. First off, the woman at the desk had the nerve to say to me with a crappy attitude "aren't you the one who didn't have money this morning?" And then after half an hour of being what felt like interrogated by the manager I was deemed 'unfit' to adopt. This poor, filthy little dog living in there terrible loud crate conditions could have found a loveing happy home with myself, my boyfriend, and our 1st dog. Too bad this place sucks.
