At my latest count there are 68 Southern Baptist Churches in our small county. That's a lot! This church is more like the center piece of this group and all interact with each other and all share a like mind concerning their interpretation of the Bible. I've been there many times over the years for a variety of reasons. I've always felt welcome and have found assistance from the leaders. It's been my experience that this church welcomes people regardless of their social status or any other status!

The visitation and funeral service were conducted by two pastors. They did a really remarkable job of bringing comfort to the grieving family. Blakely Funeral Home made the arrangements and orchestrated everything from start to finish! This is a rural Southern Baptist Church that mostly caters to the local community. Just good country folks for the most part. A lots of history at this place of worship.

I was driving nearby when I spotted the sign for "Historic Church and Slave Cemetery" so I…read moredetoured. The church itself was originally organized in 1780. The original building was constructed in 1876. In 1993, the sanctuary was damaged in an arsonist-set fire that destroyed part of the structure but much has been rebuilt and expanded. The building is listed on the Gaston County historic properties registry. Across from the church, the two hundred year old cemetery is enclosed by a rock wall. The oldest grave is of Joseph Blackwood, dated 1780. A number of Revolutionary war soldiers are also buried here. Several of the markers have Confederate flags because of course they do. In 2012, a large second cemetery directly below the rock walled cemetery was discovered containing the remains of at least 90 former slaves. It is adjacent to the rock wall in the wooded area but I opted to skip it as some of the undergrowth looked like poison ivy.
