I first learned about Grand Prairie Karate Academy from a flyer advertising an introductory class…read morethere. My son had lost interest in baseball and we were looking for something to keep him exercising. I was a little concerned when I drove to the gym. It is not in the best of neighborhoods, and the strip mall it was in was more than a little run-down. Meeting one of the black-belt instructors - Bryan Higgins - put my mind at ease, however. GPKA has been operating for more than thirty years in Grand Prairie at this same location. Attend a belt test there and you will see a full panel of black belts that reads like a who's who of Texas Karate. Two years later, and I can't think of life without GPKA. I joined shortly after my son did and am now a brown belt there. The instructors are top notch, and the gym is owned by a legend of Texas Karate - Dr. Brax Boyd - a man who counts Chuck Norris as a long-time friend and professional associate. Classes are for everyone - boys, girls, young, old, disabled - you'll see them all. Its great exercise, great for coordination and flexibility, great to lose weight, and great fun. And you learn the art of self defense. There is no down side! So if you drive by and think the place looks run down, come in an experience the heart these folks possess. As the author Larry Niven once said, mutts may not win any dog shows, but they usually beat the winners in a fair fight. If you want the prettiest gym, go somewhere else. If you want to learn karate, and to fight with the best of them, this is your place.

Open Tue, Wed & Thur nights. Closed Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon. Sometimes the instructor does not show up…read moreor is in his office during class trying to sell classes to new customers. The building leaks water & the A/C frequently does not work. Charges for belt tests & promotions. Good traditional Karate, but only open 3 nights a week is what makes this 2/5 stars. Tue & Thur is beginning, intermediate, then "advanced" (involves mostly socializing during the advanced class). Wed is very light sparring or weapons. Again, only open 3 days a week, Tue - Thur, closed Fri - Mon, no weekends available. It is quite dangerous working out in an aluminum building during summer when the A/C is out, people have passed out before. The water leaks are continuous & have caused moldy spots on the wood floor. The instructor is excellent, however he is getting older and his students (both regular & private who pay extra) have left, leaving it hard to keep the doors open (They do yearly festivals and car washes to raise money). This is why it is only open 3 nights a week (it used to be 5 days). If you have children, this might be a great place to start because of the lack of time required, then if he/she is serious move on to another school (that is what most of his students do). My daughter attended classes briefly when she was younger and loved it, but she wanted to put more time into martial arts and we moved on. The instrutor is a great guy, however, I have to be honest, 2/5 is appropriate. Have a great day.

My son started classes at Dr. Flury's school about a year and a half ago. He was about 3 1/2 years…read moreold when he began his training. His classes were on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The classes were adequate, but many times, the instructors were late arriving to the Saturday morning classes and we (and the other students and parents) were left waiting in the parking lot until the instructor(s) arrived, set up, and began class sometimes as much as 10 minutes late. Yet there was no make-up time and we were still charged full price for the 30-minute class. The Wednesday classes were respectable until Dr. Flury began her "After School All-Stars" program. When this began, as many school-age children were crowded in behind a curtain for their class while my son's class was held on the other side of the curtain. (Dr. Flury's last boast to my knowledge was that the program had 71 kids enrolled.) It is hard enough to keep children of 4-5 years old focused, much less in an environment as chaotic as this became. My son's class would sometimes respond to the commands given to the after-school program instead of the ones given by their instructors because they could not hear - I couldn't either! I pulled my son out of the Wednesday class because we both were not happy - it was HIS choice. He is finishing up his 6-month contract for the remaining Saturday classes. We have joined a different Taekwondo academy and my son is very happy there. Also, don't be fooled by the "Parents' Night Out" events - I trusted this academy with my son for a "Superhero Showdown" evening. He came home almost in tears. Almost all of the kids there were older and piled onto him - he is very articulate and would not make this up. It might be okay for kids at the older end of the spectrum, but it certainly wasn't appropriate for a 5-year-old. I contacted Dr. Flury about my concerns, and she did correct the problem with the instructors' Saturday tardiness, but other than that, this place continues to pack as many children as possible into a space that cannot accommodate them. It's as though Dr. Flury doesn't care about anything but the almighty dollar - we only saw her on graduation days (it is my understanding that she only works with the older, higher-ranking students) when the younger students were given their new belt rankings, which were not necessarily earned by skill, only by number of classes attended. The Grand Master at my son's new academy is always present, usually teaching the classes, and has plenty of well-qualified assistants. Any "pro's" I had regarding Dr. Flury's school are gone. The "con's" are many. Your child will be taught for the most part by students, the mats are FILTHY (one of my son's former instructors even admitted that they didn't know how long it had been since the mats had been cleaned), the student-to-teacher ratio has been as high as 14:1 (again, we are talking about 3-4 year-olds), there are no options for make-up classes, the academy is governed by the school district (you will pay full price for NO class if it's a school holiday) and there are many more issues I had that Dr. Flury was not willing to bend upon. We are finished here, and I know we are not the only ones that have left due to unacceptable circumstances.
