On the surface of Alvarez BJJ, there are many team trophies, and even more medals from both him and his daughter on the walls. The facility is nice, you will feel like signing the contract immediately. However, It is overpriced and the school is overrated. After experiencing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in several different places over the world, the coaching isn't worth the price. The social environment is better for kids and teens looking for a supervised activity but does not possess the candor for adults. I've known this school for several years, when the location was in the warehouse across the lot from the facility where it is currently. The quality of attention has declined. Coach Alvarez's daughter, Danielle Alvarez worked with these kids for several years, however some of the parents I speak with express how their child's skill in jiu jitsu isn't growing. I've learned that she is very manipulative with the teenagers, showing favoritism with certain teamates and outcasting other individuals. She deceptively encourages the favorited young and impressionable teammates to be overly aggressive when rolling and sparring with the outcasts. I have noticed that she, along with Coach Danny, is a crucial factor to why the school is cliqueish and has a pack mentality. This is something I noticed more of as she is given more responsibility and freedom as a coach from her father and also as the children she's coached for years are growing up being groomed under her control. They look up to her because she is a world champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and they do not yet have the critical ability of discernment to recognize that this is manipulation and bullying. Instead being investigated and corrected by the head coach, this behavior is downplayed and defended by Coach Danny Alvarez. Coach Danielle Alvarez communicates great in the kids class but is very socially awkward with adults, and is arrogant towards other female teamates that she alienates. The frequent absence of coaching and aloofness from Coach Danny Alvarez has adverse affects on the classroom dynamics. His handling of conflicts are vaguely directed at the class in a shrewd lecture which demonizes any specific unnamed individual without speaking with them directly. This gives the effect of indirect shaming because of the presence the audience, the team. They offer different packages labeled under Bronze, Silver, and Gold. The Bronze package is still very expensive and has numerous limitations. For example, you can only train a number of times a week and you are not welcome to the open mat on Sundays with the Gold members, and you don't have access to certain areas of the facility that are offered to Gold members. Many of his students are loyal due to the fear of judgment and do not realize that they can have more genuine Jiu Jitsu experiences for far less money in the same city with great attentive coaches that are able to connect with their students. Although many students train hard to earn their belts and stripes, Coach Danny Alvarez will purposely choose a time when he is at odds with a student to spontaneously award belt promotions, choosing to skip the students he disagrees with to show his disapproval. He pressures his students to compete in tournaments for the team trophy but is not invested in the individual as a competitor. He is sure to record the promoted student's testimony to keep up appearances of the school. This school has had great talent, but many of the most competitive students are leaving because of the pressure and social environment. There is a distinct lack of connection from both Coach Danny Alvarez and Coach Danielle Alvarez and this has gotten worse with time. This is my personal experience with this school but I'm very sure so many other's share it. It's a nice clean simple family place on the surface with a seemingly caring staff, but is a corrupt cult once you've signed the contract. read more

Look, I have nothing but great things to say about the class itself. Top-tier instruction and a very welcoming group of people based on our first day. This is why I give the gym 4 stars. However, I was very disappointed in the amount of money that this gym asks for membership. I really wanted this to be my gym, but the price was sky high compared to the rest of the market. I get it, I'm paying for some high level training from a great instructor with tons of accolades, but I make over $80k per year, and even I feel like the price is too high compared to some competitors. It's practically a second car payment!! Yes, they do have other "cost effective plans," but they're not for me. The lower you go in price, the less access to the gym you have. Seems to me like a bit of price gouging, but if you can afford it, I'm sure it's a great gym to be apart of! Also, they give you a 30 day free trial, but you have to attend at least 3 classes per week. Not a dealbreaker for us by any means.. but, we did not complete our trial because we already knew the price was out of the question. First off - VERY CLEAN, Great Bjj Mats, good family environment. I will say that Coach Alvarez runs a tight ship and everything is always super clean. I've visited many gyms and I know this is something of a rarity to find such huge CLEAN mat space. My daughter currently trains here. There are a lot of kids so plenty of partners. Separate parent/waiting area equipped with TV and movies for younger kids. Plenty of tables to do homework or parents can work on laptops etc. I do wish that they provided WiFi for parents who do have to work. Other than that the waiting area is very nice. I do like that the space is separate so parents cannot coach from sidelines and kids can stay focused being separated from the parents. Don't really recommend this place for younger kids. We signed up for the "30" day free trial. Which really means 2 free classes and get a free gee for signing up. Or actually do the 30 days then pay $150 (maybe more I can't remember exact amount) for a gee and $200 plus a month for 4 classes a month. Which is cool but they have you sign either a 6 month contract or a year with them. My son was 7 when he started and after each class I'd ask if he learned anything new and same response was no we just practice the same move. Ok cool I get that practice makes perfect but we were already 4 months in and he's still only doing the same stuff. They let the parents sit in this room with the tiniest camera view to "watch" your child. You literally cannot find them on these views. I don't feel like any of the people who work here are friendly. Most do not say hello when you walk in. Except the older man with the glasses he was always friendly and remembered kids names. So, I am completely new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I don't have a wrestling background, I haven't worked out much since leaving the armed forces 15 years ago. I decided recently to start focusing on health and fitness so I got myself a yearly membership to 24 Hour Fitness and felt like it wasn't enough to just work out but I also needed some motivation and a skill set that could potentially save my life (not to sound so gloom lol). I searched around my local area as well as further out. My cousin recommended Alvarez BJJ. I looked them up and decided to give it a shot. I originally scheduled for a Monday but had to reschedule for Tuesday... Funny story. I text the gym asking should I still come since I wasn't 20 minutes early like recommended. I get a stern text back saying "Get to Class!"... That sold me before stepping in. I knew what I needed and what I was looking for. I just read some of the more negative reviews but have yet to find that to be the case. Coach Danny takes his time with students, he doesn't baby you but he seems to understand where people are in the art. As a prior service member, I appreciate the attention to detail and the maturity of the team and coaches. All of the people I've met do seem more like family. I guess you have to be if you swapping sweat with people and rolling all over the place. Nothing feels rushed and people that are far more skilled than a newcomer take the time and are patient with you. I remember everyone's name that I have come across, and they all seem to remember mines. The staff is small but seriously effective. I have issues with flexibility and stamina at the moment but they make you not want to just give up... That's what I needed and they delivered. As for prices, I found it to be fair. I did sign up for Gold but it's worth the money if you put in the effort. If you are only thinking of going 1-3 times a week (which is kinda where I am currently because I get tired LOL) then you can go with a smaller package. I plan to be in the gym 7 days a week and class 5-7 days a week by December, so for me signing up for the Gold was what I wanted to do. I signed up on day one because I don't plan on quitting and I won't quit. I guess it's based on your level of commitment to learning. From the outside looking in, there's one drawback for me... I live in Lancaster the gym is in Arlington. The quality of coaches, staff, gym, etc. makes the drive enjoyable. Plus, I like the drive it gives me time to enjoy the road. No excuses for why I shouldn't get up and go do what I feel like I'm beginning to love. The second day in class I got my a$$ handed to me over and over and over, I ran out of breath... Then other teammates would tell me "Slow down, take your time, control your breathing" as if they were coaches as well. That was cool! When the class was over Coach Danny and Coach KJ broke it down and I didn't feel singled out. It was like everyone is teaching you not just the coaches. I feel like I made a great decision and one I will not regret... But if I knew beforehand there is an on-site workout gym for Gold Members I would have saved my money from 24-Hour Fitness. This is worth every dime and to be honest, I thought I would be paying much more. P.S. Don't pay attention to my grammar. I'm a one stripe blue belt that transferred from aloisio Silva academy in pantego(nothing bad to say about Silva academy just no morning classes and I was working swing shift). Immediately walking into this place it was intense, it's not a casual place to take rounds off if tired, you're pushed. That was exactly what I needed at the time was a place that called out lack of discipline. Coach Alvarez is not afraid to call you out and he holds his students accountable no matter your age, race etc. he brings out the best in everyone. Disregard all the nonsense reviews you see on here, coach Alvarez is a good mix of having fun, making jokes and disciplined, he's an awesome guy. When you put your 100% forward there is a sense of camaraderie that is awesome. We're all asked to compete and for the most part do but it's not mandated or frowned on if you do, coach has made it clear that if you put in your time you're gonna get promoted and it's fair. 3 months into the school consistently after I dropped weight and I'm not getting gassed out anymore, I'm going for 4-5 7 min rounds no breaks, I'm getting more technical and coach even pushed me to show up and drill through my muscle rob strain and I was fine and back to normal shortly. Great gym to go when on work travel. You can't help but feel like you're going to be "fresh meat" when doing a drop in, but everyone here is humble. I was lucky enough to attend a Monday 6am class and Danny Alvarez was running the class. I never expect to see owners teaching when I drop in. Everyone came and welcomed me and people should know, this place is huge. 15,000 sqft! They have a room for weights, machines, and everything you need outside of actual mat time. And then, there's the mat. It's huge, and was designed creatively. 8 gray colored squares on a black mat to resemble tournament style (check the pics). Alvarez BJJ by far is the best Academy I have ever been part of. I see bad reviews left on here from some of the parents but me as a parent, you have to invest time and be part of your child's activities. Alvarez and the rest of the coaches are not babysitters. They are there to coach your kids but at the end of the day, you, as a parent must be involved. You have high expectations from the coaches and there's nothing wrong with that but keep in mind that you also must hold high standards for yourself. I don't just drop off my kids and wait in my car until they're finished. I sit in the waiting room and watch them. I even go closer to the mats so I can see/hear them better. I record them so I can watch the videos after with them. I hear my kid's name being called by one of the coaches, I talk to the coaches and asks questions. I know if my child is not listening or if he/she is being disrespectful or not following instructions. The more that I'm involved, the more I can discipline and make corrections at home. I know that Discipline and Attitude starts from home so I can't blame others for anything that my kids are lack of. Alvarez BJJ has nothing but all positive impacts on myself and my kids. All the staffs are very professional and very family oriented. I don't mind paying for the quality and that is what you get here with Alvarez BJJ. If you are competitive, higher goals and standards then this is the perfect academy for you and your kids. read more

I enrolled my child there approximately four months ago, intending for him to learn valuable skills. I spoke to several parents and they said he was the best in town. However after three months I was able to make an informed decision for myself. During the usual conversation that parents have while the kids are training I shared my views and found that many parents shared the same views. Here are my feelings on the program. - The classes are extremely overpriced. You can find programs in the area for less than half the cost without sacrificing program quality. - The main instructor is extremely talented however his presence in the class is somewhat limited. To this day I yet to speak with him. - The facility layout is a huge disappointment. During class the parents only opportunity to observe is on a small TV located in a closed off area. I know some parents can become a distraction however parents should be able to watch their child progress. I had to get right up on the TV and was barley able to make out my little one. - The training curriculum is more geared toward competition, not so much self defense. - The school in my opinion is a cash generator. The classes are large and the student/instructor numbers are not ideal for normal advancement. I feel like a dollar bill walking through their front door. read more

I'll be honest I randomly picked Mr. Alvarez's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school. I was planning a long term training trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and had been living in the Mansfield area with my parents. I love Jiu Jitsu and I hadn't been training for about a month or two and it was driving me nuts, I figure I'd go check out his gym and just try and "knock the rust off" but what I found was a gym that would change my whole BJJ game for the better. I would be hard pressed to say I know any other coach who cares more about his students than Coach Alvarez. He demands a lot from his students, weather they are the seasoned competitor, busy parents, his little Jiu Jitsu monsters (kids), or just the average jiu jitsu player. He builds his student up in everyway he knows how, and helps them to keep the good mindset on and off the mat. I came in on one occasion when no one else was there and it was myself and Coach Alvarez. I figured ok i'm the only here at the time, he's going to tell me to go home and come another day. I was wrong, he told me to warm up, and he worked one on one with me and explained some issues I was having. I was a new member of his school for maybe 2 weeks at the time, (I was a brand new purple coming from another school), and I can honestly say I have never seen another instructor do this unless they charge you for a private or tell you to go home. The people you will meet at this school are all top notch competitors weather they compete or not. I have not meet a single member from this school who has not taught me something new or reinforced a detail to my game. This is the best academy we found for my teen. He's made so much progress in the year and a half he's been going. The coaches are amazing and they actually care about the kids here! They want them to achieve not only on the mat but off. I'm so proud to say my son attends Alvarez BJJ. However, the only complaint I've ever had and still have is I wish there was a coach at every competition coaching the kids on the mat like I see with others. My son does pretty well without a coach at competitions but it's always nice to have someone coaching during tournaments. The coaches do compete themselves so I understand they can't be with everyone. Seriously though, this is THE best academy my son has attended that he loves. As a person who has trained or dropped in to at least 7 Bjj gyms in the metroplex this is my honest opinion. Read or Skim through the points. Alvarez Bjj is an ideal academy for Women, Children and Men. On the competition side the instruction and techniques are progressive and a step ahead of the game. The programs(Adult and Kids) are structured and have been working and have been successful for years with major evidence in the trophy room and various walls full of medals and belts in the academy. Also student testimonials found on YouTube are solid. Instruction/Class Structure: The evening classes are BIG but the program is so well structured and to the point it works. The instruction is clean and easy to understand. **Personal experience: With a year+ experience (a white belt at the time) prior to joining, I requested to study a few extra weeks in the beginner class because of the clean detail I had missed in my previous experience. The Kids: There is major practice in not only shaping young martial artists, great attention and energy is put in to building character on and off the mat. The coaches put close attention into Behavior, Grades and Healthy eating and habits. ***To Address a persons previous review I read about never talking to the head instructor*** MY OPINION. The instructor is very busy and this is because of the academy size and being active competitor on an International stage. BUT he is PRESENT 99.99999% of the time and to the best of his abilities even skipping birthdays and special occasions to coach students. I feel the people who have a problem with this are attention seekers. Be consistent and your hard work will NOT go unnoticed. What needs to be understood is you may fall under the wing of a more experienced teammate or asst. instructor and that's perfect for tweaking your understanding at the beginner to intermediate level. Heck even high level. The instructor has high level World Champions open to help with questions you may have if the instructor is occupied with higher rank or advance technique questions. Partner up with someone more experienced that you. Be patient and move up the ranks. It's hard to tell who is here for a day or here to stay. Put in the time. As for the kids. The asst. instructors are more than qualified. Enjoy the parents lounge. Relax. Your kids progression that day will make great conversation with them and hopefully keep them off the iPad on the way home. Instructor: The main instructor is Heavily experienced and the word extremely is an understatement when describing his understanding of BJJ. From experience of being coached by professor Alvarez it's almost as if he has cheat codes for every movement and situation between myself and opponent he's shouting to me during a match and all I have to do is listen and perform and the result is the Win. Fitness: The facility is easily the biggest around with the most extra curricular equipment outside of the Bjj training for exercise. Whether strength, conditioning, or cardio you can get it in here. (Refer to photos found on the Yelp page) Schedule: I don't know the exact schedule, I am not actively enrolled at this time but I believe the gym is open everyday and days vary but there are 6am classes available, late morning and evening classes available. Open mat on Sunday's. To start. Don't be intimidated on the competition accomplishments not everyone is a competitor there. It's a judgement free atmosphere where current students realize everyone has been the "new guy or gal"! You will find it friendly and welcoming. Straight forward 30 day free trail. He was very upset with his losses today and when I asked him what he was going to do next he said " persevere, that means refusing to give up when life gets hard" . My family have been attending Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 5 years. We started when my children were the ages of 6,7,9, and 11. The only words that I can use to describe this gym is Amazing. My 6 year old daughter loves coming to her jiu-jitsu classes. The coaches here are amazing always helping and keeping the kids motivated. It's a great building very large, they give you the opportunity to watch your child's progress on a tv and I don't believe it's a small tv. The price of the program is great I did look around before this one and other facilities where very small and pricey. The coach talked to the students about good nutrition and to be healthy make sure they are eating. It's a family own business and they are all very nice and welcoming. I have had a couple of personal issues but they are very kind in going above and beyond to help. We drive 30 minutes to get here because it's a great place. I don't know where to start. I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm so glad to have found a great Jiu Jitsu school in Arlington. I have been a stay at home mother for a long time and haven't had the opportunity yet to develop any of my own interests outside of hitting the gym for an hour a couple times per week. It was really frustrating because I wasn't seeing the results that I wanted in my body. I've only been doing Jiu Jitsu for about three months and I can see my body getting stronger and leaner. I feel more confident in my own skin and plan on keeping it up for years to come. I was a little intimidated at first, but everyone has been very supportive and patient with me. I love that when I enter the gym I leave all of stress behind, because there is no room for them when your focussing on the mat. Started training here about 3 months ago with my son. We were looking for something to keep busy. My goal was to keep him active and me get back in a workout routine. I've had great results in the gym, but it's kind of hard without a support system at this point in my life. We tried it out and both fell in love instantly. If you are looking for a jiu-jitsu establishment that doesn't play games when you pay money for them to do jiu-jitsu, then you have found the right gym! Too many times when I signed my children up for class in other locations, I walked in on them playing tag, dodge ball and no one oversee that their training was being done correctly due to only one coach with 15+ kids. I'm not one to write a review, but if you are looking for a real gym to train in the art of jiu-jitsu, then ALVAREZ BJJ is the place you want to be. It's not a place where your child is a black belt in 4 years. You earn your way by thorough training with the correct IBJJF ranking system. I drive 25 miles to the gym and another 25 miles back home. That just goes to say I will make the sacrifice because I know that my children are being taught what ABJJ say they do. If you want your child to have motivation about their self worth, overall health and fitness; along with a real outlook of a true team atmosphere, then ABJJ is it. Alvarez BJJ is hands down one of the best places to train in the DFW area. I have gone and trained at a few different schools over the 3 years I have been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and none of them compare to Alvarez BJJ. The student leave their ego at the door, the staff is friendly and Mr. Alvarez is a world champion black belt and amazing instructor. He personally makes sure that each and every one of his students gets the moves of the week no matter if there are 10 student or 60 students in class that day.
