Washington University in St Louis - WashU Swim Class of 2025

I visited this campus in June 2023 as part of an exploration of Forest Park (which is right across…read morethe street). The architecture is pretty and the campus includes a nice art museum that's worth a short visit. During the summer, it was relatively quiet on campus, but it was easy to visualize a busy place in the fall semester. Did not see many places to eat or shop - but maybe that was on the opposite side of campus (away from Forest Park).

Writing my 1,000 Yelp review for my alma mater - Washington University in St. Louis! What a crazy…read moremoment having only graduated a few years ago. When I asked my friends how many stars they would give WashU, it ranged everything from 1 star to 5 stars, but many of them noted to me that whatever I gave our school, I needed it be just based off of the experience at the school not what I can personally bring into the experience. Having gone to college here both pre- and post-Covid, I would say that WashU has really changed but I regardless would still give it 5 stars because I couldn't be where I am without this amazing schools. Here's some of the reasons why WashU deserves 5 stars, not necessarily in the order of importance. Also, definitely not an exhaustive list of things that i love about WashU, but just to name a few... - The range of clubs, organization, classes, etc. to take on this campus is honestly wild. You could explore your interest in a very in-depth way and also develop interests that you had no idea about. I've taken some incredibly interesting classes and have joined clubs that I didn't know I had an interest about. - The campus is beautiful! So many amazing places to study and hang out whether that's hammocking in the trees or being tucked in a secret study corner in the DUC. There's always a new place to explore on campus! - I appreciate how there's always something going on, on campus. Every week there's so many talks whether that's from the professors themselves or people that the campus hired from outside and so many activities and festival and performances to enjoy. You really couldn't get bored on campus. - I appreciate the caliber of people I have met at WashU. Not only is everyone extremely smart, but everyone always has some side interest or hobbies that make them incredibly talented people who I would love to be friends with. And everyone is excited and open to share with you what they are passionate about as well! - POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY - This class is actually incredible. The course is about how to become happier, not happy... happier, and it provides a lot of scientific-backed ideas and ways of thinking to go about it. This class, especially if you take it your senior year, is so relevant to the ways we build healthier and happier habits in our lives. I simply couldn't recommend it more. However, there are also many reasons how WashU could improve: - The tuition increases are not ideal. I understand why schools do this to account for inflation, etc., but especially during Covid when everything was online, it felt weird to have a tuition increase for a subpar experience. - The dining food before and after Covid was massively different. For example, Ibbis used to have all you can eat lunch every day of the week but after Covid they decided to have a set menu that barely changes. Also, the quality of the food also dropped while the prices rose dramatically. - I do not appreciate that you don't have the option to be a part-time student if you take less than 8 semesters. Sometimes, especially in your senior year, you just don't have that many classes to take and would like to still be at WashU but not pay $70k to be there. I think there needs to be more flexibility on the definition of being a student. - Like every campus, WashU can be gate-keeping on the types of people who are selected for certain activities. Especially in your freshman year, its hard getting rejected to every club you ever applied to. WashU needs to have a more open door policy especially on the student-run organization level as many of these clubs are run by students who not necessarily have leadership experience or rather had examples of what good leadership could look like. - There could be more robust entrepreneurship culture at WashU. Especially a school with this caliber, entrepreneurship is not as integrated into student life as I would have liked. I think having ideas that corporate isn't the only path to take would be nice to have known earlier on and then it would simultaneously be incorporated through the startup alumni network. I am so grateful to have gone to WashU and I would make the same decision over and over again.

Inside, the collection is genuinely impressive. There's a huge range from ancient artifacts to modern and contemporary art so it never feels repetitive. You can go from Egyptian pieces to seeing European pieces from Monet and Picasso in the same visit. One of the best parts is that general admission is free which makes it super accessible and easy to spend as much (or as little) time as you want without feeling pressured. The layout is spacious and easy to explore, although some sections feel stronger than others depending on your taste. It's also the kind of place where you can wander and really take your time. Great for both a quick visit or a longer afternoon. It's one of the best attractions in St Louis with a surprisingly deep collection. Definitely worth visiting especially if you're already in Forest Park.

Do you have the flagship blues? Well, dont. The flagship blues might be a good descriptor of when…read moreyou want to go to the mother campus of the university in your home state but it's not located in one of the state's major cities, such as one you might be the living in. When you've got the University of Missouri at St. Louis as an option, there are various other things in its favor making this urban branch campus in St. Louis proper, but at its outskirts, a plausible alternative. UMSL is referred to by almost everyone as "Uhm-zuhl." It has both undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a school of optometry, and comes in at about 17,000 students. In my mind, between 15,000 and 20,000 students is the optimal size for a university. That means it's not small enough that everyone will know when you sneeze yet not so large that you'll feel like a number, which rocker Bob Seger once committed to song. UMSL has schools in the bread and butter liberal arts and sciences, business, nursing, and education, among others. It trains a lot of bean counters, nurses, and teachers. Engineering is available in conjunction with Washington University ("Wash U," more or less in the Clayton area), though I don't know how they work out the fee structure, since Wash U is a private university. Not only is the size of the school a big plus, so is the tuition. A 2-semester academic year at a full load comes in at a hair under $10,000. This offer is also extended to communities across the Mississippi River in the metro St. Louis area's Illinois counties. A plan costing about $15,000 is extended to some areas of the Midwest as part of an "exchange program." Clearly, out of state students will pay considerably more than $10,000 a year in tuition to attend. Thus, one can expect mostly local folks to enroll at UMSL but, since it's essentially an urban campus in a bucolic setting at the city's outskirts, there will be a lot of diversity in terms of backgrounds, ages, and the like, hopefully curtailing conformity and groupthink. Because my fans (who really aren't my fans but read my reviews for some stupid reason) claim that I have a "template," I must make good on that. That said, I must tell you about transit options! The St. Louis area has had Metro Link light rail for about two decades and it has two lines. While the lines overlap on the Illinois side of the big river and operate along the same right of way, the route splits in the city somewhere around Forest Park, with one going northwesterly and terminating at STL-Lambert Airport and the other heading toward the southwestern suburbs. There is only one station - North Hanley, and with a huge parking lot - between the airport's closer-in Metro Link stop and the campus. However, UMSL has two Metro Link stops, as does the airport itself! One is at the North Campus and the other is at the South Campus. So, in no time flat, one can be at the airport or can take the train to all of the downtown area's major venues. And rail makes the campus much more convenient for commuters. The South Campus has a few older collegiate buildings with character, while the North Campus has many modernist collegiate brick buildings of the '60s and '70s. I'd say UMSL handily earns 3 stars. However, for its size, cost, value, options, being laid out on pastoral, hilly terrain, and having two Metro Link stops on its campus, I'd have to say it comes in at 4 stars.

There's no real campus, just two small rooms and no student facilities at all. The curriculum is not systems-based, making it disjointed and chaotic. You'll end up memorizing random details with no clear direction and have to teach yourself the material. Professors are unprepared, and lectures feel more like a waste of time than a learning experience--yet attendance is mandatory for everything. When it comes to Step 1 prep, this school does not prepare you AT ALL. Many students don't pass the CBSE to qualify to sit for the exam and get pushed back by a year. It's common for students to repeat classes or even entire years. And if you're trying to find the match rate you won't since no one has from this school yet. The school in PR has a match rate very similar to the Caribbean. If you're looking into the MSMS program specifically--be very careful. It's marketed as a stepping stone to their med school, but there's absolutely no guarantee of admission, no matter how well you perform. It is a scam and not a bridge into medical school like they advertise. Staff are always being fired or leaving suddenly, making things even more unstable. This is a for profit school and does not care about you. The worst part is how they go out of their way to recruit students from low-income or minority backgrounds, acting like they're all about diversity then give them zero support. They take your money, make false promises, and leave you to teach yourself. Do yourself a favor and look into more established MD or DO programs. You will regret coming to this school.
