Ifeel like I can trust this source for genuine Native-made crafts. The prices range but I would say generally it's all affordable. Especially since these carvings are beautiful and you know information about the carver, material, tribe, and animal. Shipping is good, too. But I would recommend to go for the flat-rate shipping option. It's a bit more expensive but it comes quicker. I had some hiccups when I chose USPS (Ground Advantage)...eventually everything arrived but my packages got stuck for a few days in transit lol. Guess that's why it's cheaper lol! I stopped by NM Bead and Fetish because my husband likes fetish carvings and I felt obligated to bring him some home from my trip to New Mexico. The store was maybe 25% fetish, 75% bead/jewelry, and one really helpful lady behind the counter. I popped in on a Friday afternoon, and the only other customers inside was a lady obsessively pawing through various trays of beads and her young kids or grandkids trying to stay entertained. I eyed the fetishes and saw mainly pretty traditional carvings, and none with a lot of detail like some other stores had. Prices seemed fair, or at least in keeping with the other shops in Old Town, but nothing really spoke to me (or me, trying to channel my husband, as it were). The pre-made jewelry was nice, and I was tempted by a few necklaces. I'm not too into beads so I didn't spend too much time perusing this section, but it seemed like they had a wide variety of things, and although I know little about pricing comparatively, what I saw seemed inexpensive. It's a nice place to check out if you're in Old Town, especially if you're just in the mood to browse - the woman working here was really nice, and left me alone to look but was right there if I had any question. I wish there were a 4 1/2 stars. We went to this store because my mom wanted to look at Zuni Indian fetishes... but I was immediately impressed by their selection of beads - and even more by their findings. I bought a BEAUTIFUL silver and peridot clasp for a very good price - and plan to order more things online when I get home (as I live in CA). The service was excellent - very friendly and helpful, but not overbearing. If I were local I know I'd be popping in often. I'm thankful they sell online because often I find bead shops I like when I'm on vacation - but can never benefit from their selection since they aren't local to me. So much so that I send all of my friends and family to their store to shop, because there is nearly something for everyone at every budget. I am a lifelong resident. I am very particular. I worked in Old Town as a youngster. I used to shop for beads at an import store downtown in the seventies and have shopped in SF, Madrid, you name it. Now, is such a pleasure to shop at NM Bead and Fetish. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and relaxed. The fetishes are beautiful and so are the prices! So many places you have to slog through hundreds of strings of ugly to mediocre beads to find something that will bring your vision to life. Not here, here EVERYTHING is beautiful. I, not only fulfill my dream, but I am inspired by the stones to create new and different pieces. Every time I come in, everything is so well organized, I am excited by the variety and quality and it's so nice not to have to dread the prices. I just bought silver grey crystals and pearls for a gorgeous necklace for my sister ( that cost me half of what I paid for crystals and pearls for a necklace I made for my sister --ten years ago in Santa Fe) and already dreaming of what I am going to make with the stones I plan to buy tomorrow night.
