The Museum is well situated in Old Town and an easy bop over from the shops. In fact, if you visit on a Sunday morning, the museum is free of charge and shares a parking lot with Old Town. You can have your parking validated by the museum and spend some time at both. The permanent exhibits at the museum are expertly organized and there's almost certainly something for everyone. You could easily spend the day learning about local New Mexico artists in many different formats, or enjoy the rotating exhibits. Even if a rotating exhibit doesn't sound particularly interesting, I highly encourage you to check it out. The curator at this museum does an absolutely fantastic job of keeping things engaging. There's a particularly profound permanent piece that I highly encourage one to find, which is a video accompanied by a teeter-totter. And don't miss the sculpture garden outside! The gift shop is worth a stop, too. Many of the museum gift shops that I've stopped in over the years are filled with, well, junk--items largely irrelevant to the visit. The Albuquerque Museum, though, showcases local artisans, local food, and so much more. I almost always leave with something from their Los Poblanos case and a new coffee table book about the southwest. Can't recommend this gem enough!

A nuclear cannon, which could lob a nuclear shell some 20 miles. There are just lots of interesting exhibits like this. The main reason we were here, was because my brother wanted to see what was basically the top half of his former submarine, the USS James K Polk. This was the last submarine he served on before he retired. He was telling me all kinds of neat stories about the sub, and other others heard him talking to me, and he ended up telling quite a few other people about the sub also. There is just so much to see and do in this museum, you could easily spend two or three hours here. The prices are reasonable and they do offer a military/veterans discount. This was cool. Thanks.

One of my favorite places in the world is The House on the Rock in Spring Green, WI. When I was at Tinkertown I felt like I was at a mini version of it. How cool to find out that Tinkertown was inspired by The House on the Rock! Tinkertown was created by artist Ross Ward. His wife keeps it running to honor his memory and to share his creations. Ross started creating figures out of wood in junior high school! I love the glass bottle walls. Bring some quarters or get them from the cashier for the many moving contraptions throughout the museum. There are hand painted inspirational signs throughout Tinkertown. There's a Western town. There are miniatures. There's an art car. It's filled with so much! I felt giddy at this place just like I did at House on the Rock. It's a place for all ages. Free parking out front.

Whether you're interested in the mining aspect, different countries that used turquoise over the generations, spotting imitations, what mines produce different variations, or learning about the family who started the museum, there is something for all. There are sample stones and areas set up to test your own knowledge at different turquoise and spotting fakes. And a mine you can go inside. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to going back next time in town. Dont forget to stop and browse the collection for sale in the gift shop. There was a good exhibit on how anthropologists and archaeologists work together to learn about the past, an extensive look at Pueblo history, a really nice exhibit on Native American basketry, and a special exhibit on the museum's cuneiform tablets. I especially appreciated the emphasis on respecting Native American cultures and learning that they are working with tribes on returning some of their collection, as well as removing items from exhibit that are used in religious ceremonies. The museum is located on UNM's campus, so we took advantage of the free weekend parking.

Heritage Farms since its upgrade has also been a huge favorite as well, especially with the animals to see. The castle and slide are also top on the list as well. There are many miniature train sets that you can watch with steps or stools for kids to be able to see. They have toys in another corner for children to play with too. But the best part if you have children is the mini train ride you can take! We road 2x in a row, my son love this place and it is usually really hard to get him yo leave. Rinconada Canyon: Small parking lot, but free. We got there pretty early on a weekday so there was no issue, not sure what it would be like on a weekend. Be prepared for a sandy hike, and keep an eye out for snakes! We were a little worried when the first two signs indicated petroglyphs that we could barely see, if at all, but as you get deeper into the canyon they become much more numerous and clearer to see. Round trip hike is flat and easy, aside from the sandiness, but there is zero shade so be prepared.
