Very nice and lots to see! Take your time and admire the time and effort that went into each piece of art and the life of the circus. Not to mention the adventure on a sailboat!! Don't forget to take some quarters to enjoy some of the sideshow fun!

One of the truly unique attractions on the Turquoise Trail. I have been here multiple times with my children and we always find something new. There is so much for your eyes to explore, you just can't take it all in the first time. The staff is exceedingly kind and welcoming. Tinkertown was started by Ross Ward who spent his life carving small wooden figurines and bringing worlds to life around them. A circus painter by trade, his art and creativity knew no bounds and he continued working until his passing. He left behind his wonderful imagination and art for us to enjoy. There are collections of all sorts and a sailing boat that has its final dock here in the mountains. Some lovely horses to say hello to with just the sweetest dispositions. Don't forget to take some photos in the wooden cutouts!

Sailing ship in Mountains of Albuquerque? Sure in the TinkerTown Museum anything can make sense.

Well if you have kids with you I would certainly say that this place is a must, if you don't it's a maybe depending on your mood and interest in the eclectic. Your $6/adult admission gets you a 1hr tour of the most interesting tour of items. Cute animatronic scenes, just don't think $150 Disney Animatronic, think $6 Animatronic and you too will understand the 5 star rating!

Love this little museum! I go each year with my kiddos just for fun and to support our locals. The kids love it each time we go. They find something new to love about this place each time. This year we found out the huge ship belongs to the brother of the lady who owns the museum. The ship was our favorite part of the museum. what an awesome adventure!

Ask the Community - Tinkertown Museum

Are they open again? They were closed for years and the web site hadn't been updated to show it.

They were open this fall and they do close for the winter. It sounds like they will have some assistance with future operations and I'll bet they will reopen in the spring.

We arrived a few minutes before the Fred Harvey Whistle Stop Cafe closed at the museum and Francis, the woman who runs the restaurant graciously sat us down and told us what was left for the day. Mr. B had the Homemade Chicken and Dumplings and I just wanted a slice of the incredible looking carrot cake. Francis brought the food out, and it was amazing. The decor of the cafe, and the food gave you the feeling you are sitting in grandma's kitchen having a home cooked meal. The chicken and dumplings were full of flavor, and absolutely delicious. The carrot cake was moist and honestly the best slice of carrot cake I have had. Once we finished our meal, Francis gave us a tour of the museum. It was like stepping back into history with original dishes from the Harvey House restaurant, there is local history and railroad history too. It was well worth the stop, and I highly recommend a visit. It is a bit confusing to find, but it sits right at the railroad, just follow the signs. There is a nice size parking lot, so that is easy and everyone at the cafe and the museum are extremely kind, helpful and very knowledgeable about the history.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, this was the last stop on the Santa Fe Trail right before arriving in that city. Visiting this "living museum", you get something of a feel for what it might have been like to live in a time when it took many months for caravans traveling the Santa Fe Trail to reach their destination. The living areas, workshops, farm, and animal pens give visitors a look at the hard lives of those who blazed the trail for the settlement of this part of the American Southwest. If you're traveling with children, you'll find that there are walks (both short and long) through the property with space for children to explore and run. Situated only about 20 minutes South of Santa Fe and accessible from I-25, the site is good to visit year-round, but in the Summer months it's probably best to come in the mornings while the temperature remains below 90+ degrees.

The maps make it easy as long as you understand how to orient the map to where you are. We had no problem. We spent all morning here walking the place. You will do a lot of walking, because it is a distance between exhibits. I saw someone say this place is dusty, well YES it's an historical village. Kids can really get exercise & will love the water mill. We plan to go again during the harvest festival. The historical volunteer experts were outstanding & a wealth of knowledge. There are lots of shade trees If you bring a picnic lunch. This place is very much worth the drive. Tips: good walking shoes, water, hats, suntan lotion, walking sticks (because of rough terrain if needed) Go early to beat the heat....

The only thing missing was a tour of her house up at Ghost Ranch, of which we'll resolve next year. We took the audio tour which helped explain things well, but bogged down a bit in the early middle. My interested picked up once she moved to New Mexico (from New York), and accelerated with the The "Tewa Nangeh/Tewa Country," Exhibit. This exhibition placed O'Keeffe's art in dialogue with the works of twelve contemporary Tewa artists to explore themes of sacred space, land ownership, and identity. I was particular enamored with "Tewa Tales of Suspense", an ongoing series of ceramic tiles and prints created by Santa Clara Pueblo artist Jason Garcia (Okuu Pín). He reimagines Native history and modern Pueblo life through the vibrant, action-packed visual style of classic Marvel comic book covers.

Many of O'Keefe's most well-known works were bought up by bigger museums (Met, Art Institute of Chicago, etc), and so this museum mainly has smaller pieces and studies. The curation is a bit thin, loosely chronological with some decent historical commentary, but not much placement within the broader artistic traditions within she worked. Several of her stronger pieces were stuck in weird crannies, like the side of a room showing a movie about her life, or in odd places where viewing them is blocked by installations in the center of the room. On the day we went, a show showcasing local artists' responses to her work dominated 1/3 of the exhibition space, with several of her works unceremoniously sprinkled among the local works. One of her most important late works, portraying a pelvic bone, was positioned along a passageway, while a work by a local artist riffing on the work was positioned front and center.

The Museum is well situated in Old Town and an easy bop over from the shops. In fact, if you visit on a Sunday morning, the museum is free of charge and shares a parking lot with Old Town. You can have your parking validated by the museum and spend some time at both. The permanent exhibits at the museum are expertly organized and there's almost certainly something for everyone. You could easily spend the day learning about local New Mexico artists in many different formats, or enjoy the rotating exhibits. Even if a rotating exhibit doesn't sound particularly interesting, I highly encourage you to check it out. The curator at this museum does an absolutely fantastic job of keeping things engaging. There's a particularly profound permanent piece that I highly encourage one to find, which is a video accompanied by a teeter-totter. And don't miss the sculpture garden outside! The gift shop is worth a stop, too. Many of the museum gift shops that I've stopped in over the years are filled with, well, junk--items largely irrelevant to the visit. The Albuquerque Museum, though, showcases local artisans, local food, and so much more. I almost always leave with something from their Los Poblanos case and a new coffee table book about the southwest. Can't recommend this gem enough!
