Within just minutes of speaking with Dr. Sumner, that fear completely melted away. Her presence was calm, grounded, and deeply compassionate, and I immediately felt safe. She took the time to truly listen, not just to my symptoms, but to my story. She gently and clearly explained that the anxiety I was experiencing was a very normal response to the amount of stress I had been under. That alone brought such relief. What truly stood out to me was when she explained how anxiety often feeds on itself, how we become anxious about having anxiety, which only intensifies it. That insight hit home so deeply. I have received accommodations before in college and provided my previous documentation. The response I received from Farah Assefnia, who works there as administrative office, was very brief, rude, and dismissive -- saying that they don't participate in that kind of service. When I followed up to ask if they have an age limit or don't serve adults, she simply said there is no age limit, however, they won't be able to provide documentation for college accommodations. Farah treated me poorly. Their website mentions "Support Services & Accommodations," so this was very unclear and disappointing. It was never specified if they specialize in accommodations for workplace, college students, high school students, middle school students, or elementary school students. I felt discriminated, disrespected, and dismissed. If they don't offer this service, a polite explanation and a referral to another clinic who has experience providing documentation and accommodations would have been the professional thing to do. I would not recommend this center to anyone who is a person of color, college students, young adults, or disabled individuals looking for support seeking support or accommodations. Farah Assefnia's response showed a complete lack of customer service skills. McLean Counseling Center needs to train their staff better or hire people who know how to treat clients with basic respect. They also need to update their website to specify what "Support Services & Accommodations" actually means.

My son does not have a substance abuse problem, but he was in dire need of intensive outpatient mental health assistance. It took a lot to convince him to try the program, and the intake person on the phone (Jason) told him everything would be confidential. When we entered the facility, the woman who met with us (Teale) came out to the lobby and informed us my 16-year-old son would be required to enter the substance abuse track. She then proceeded to read everything from my son's file aloud--yes, in the LOBBY--explaining that because he had revealed to the phone intake person that he had consumed alcohol in the past, he would be required to enroll in the substance abuse program. Teale initially tried to tell me that our health insurance required him to be enrolled in the substance abuse program. When I pressed for details, she admitted it was an in-house decision. I called my insurance company, and they confirmed that Sandstone receives more money for the adolescent substance abuse program because it is considered a dual diagnosis program. We were there for an hour and everything took place in the lobby. I never set foot in their offices, and all of this information that my son was told was confidential was completely blabbed by Teale for anyone within earshot to hear. They actually refused to admit my son to the adolescent mental health intensive outpatient program unless we also consented to admit him to the substance abuse program. They turned away a suicidal teenager because they wanted to save that spot for a more profitable patient. Never mind that the little trust my son had in this program was completely obliterated by these people. The director of the program never came to speak with us or followed up with a phone call. This was an absolutely horrendous experience with a completely incompetent, greedy and very shady company.

For a vulnerable individual, seeking therapy, her therapeutic techniques are very inappropriate and can cause more damage to your well-being. I still mention the horrible treatment that this therapist gave me to my friends and current therapist. Many of her techniques violate the NASW Code of Ethics, and put her at risk of losing her LCSW license.
