When I wanted to enquire about what bus to take, their office was on a bus, this was due to the fact that their office was getting a makeover. National express coaches and normal bus service's stop here. In the bus station you have the gate numbers, which are separated by colourful handlebars where the passengers wait for their bus. You have the computerised timetable which shows the bus number and what time the bus is coming. That was properly the most modern thing about the bus station. You also had permanently closed shops in the station as well. The city centre is right next to the station. Well if and when I come back I hope that the station has a cosmetic makeover.

The place was filthy, but then again Newport usually is. Thankfully, it's in a great location right close to the city centre. ~ Ease of Use: This bus station is really simple to navigate, with multiple gates and clear electronic signs showing the timetables of upcoming buses. It would be difficult to be confused here. Additionally, from my experience people line up in the great British queue pretty well so there's never a mob of people crowding around a certain gate! There's not much to fault about this bus station. It does it's job in an efficient manner and has easy to read signs to help you find your way!

For a long time you had to kind of fend for yourself here, but now at rush hour they actually have people helping out and employees and what not. It's literally right in the middle of a development of housing, and surrounded by businesses and whatnot which is pretty cool. In fact when you pull up here you will notice that a little shopping center is right next to it - although you have to kind of cross a bridge and walk back down to it. But it's good for your cheap shopping if you need it. They've also made some colourful admissions to some of the buildings here. I meant additions, but maybe they've admitted stuff to the buildings too?

It only gets busy on the platforms during peak travel times when people are using this line to get to and from the Valleys in one direction, and to and from the city centre in the other direction. It's very convenient for anyone working or studying at the University, which surrounds the station, or for those living in Cathays, as it offers a good alternative to a taxi if you want to get into town quickly without the walk - particularly if you have heavy bags to carry.

Without their services travel to and from the valleys would rely on some smaller operators which could mean the services were over-stretched. Being one of the larger public transport operators in the area you would expect a second from none service but in my experience this is not the case. The prices seem to be rising steadily as the years pass by, steeper and steeper. I find it makes more sense to buy a day ticket now than a return as there is not usually a lot of difference in the price, depending of course on how much distance is travelled. I've met more grumpy drivers on Stagecoach buses than on any other service operator which suggests to me that they are not entirely happy with their job. The buses are almost always late and only on time when you are running behind. Also, they seem to run some very interesting service alterations at certain times of the evening. I have known them to stop services prematurely at central town areas rather than allow them to run all the way to the end of a line. The times that they usually do this just happen to be between 5 and 7 pm which is when most of us are going to be using their service to get home. This means you are left waiting for the next bus to travel the last third of your journey and baffles me completely. Apart from that, most of the buses are fairly clean and tidy, fairly modern and although on occasions they have breakdowns (the buses, not the drivers) the buses are normally in good shape.

I have been a frequent user of Dragon Taxis for many years and have always regarded their service…read moreas excellent. That was until Saturday 10th November. On Saturday 10th November, I prepaid for a return taxi from Cardiff to Newport following the Wales v Australia match. I was keen to ensure a taxi as I had my ten year old grandson with me and paid £28 in advance with the understanding that I had to be outside the Hilton at 8.00 pm. We were outside the Hilton at 7.45 and then carefully checked every taxi as it arrived. By 8.15 no taxi had arrived and I enlisted the help of another Newport Dragon taxi driver who was outside the Hilton with a mini bus awaiting for his passengers. He checked all the taxis waiting and phoned the office and was told that my taxi was in Greyfriars Road which was a few minutes drive away. After 15 minutes, no taxi had arrived and I phoned the office again. Following this call the taxi arrived about 8.40. The driver then said he has previously been at the Hilton but could not find me. Frankly I do not believe that the taxi driver was at the Hilton earlier and I say this for the following reasons:- - I was at the Hilton at 7.45 and was carefully checking every taxi as it arrived - The taxi driver said that he could not wait long as he was being told to move on. This wasn't the case - there were a number of taxis parked awaiting customers to arrive - The other Newport Dragon driver of the minibus was parked up for about 15 minutes and did not experience any problem. His very helpful attempts to locate my taxi also failed. - I was getting mixed messages from Newport particularly about where my taxi was located - this included in Greyfriars Road and outside the New Theatre. - I fully accept that I was having problems with my phone on the night however I have replayed the messages. There were a number of messages from the office saying that the taxi was parked up waiting for me and another from the driver timed at about 8.35 stating that he had arrived. There was certainly no call or text around 8.00 pm stating that he had arrived I fully accept that after internationals, Cardiff is busy and also would understand if the taxi had been delayed. What I don't accept is the taxi not arriving and then the attempts to cover up whatever had gone wrong. I would like the matter fully investigated so that other passengers do not experience a similar problem

Not as elderly as the Oldport…read more This is a large and fancy station in Newport with a beautiful space-age bridge and corridors connecting to the older buildings. It's very strange but also very nice. It looks like a pair of headphones or something - it's quite odd. But somehow beautiful. It's the third busiest station in Wales because it's in the Cardiff area, and it's been operating since 1850. You can actually go directly from here to Manchester, or all the way up to Holyhead, and Nottingham, and Birmingham, and various other major cities - and Portsmouth and Brighton and so on. The new Concourse was opened in 2010 and is space-age and beautiful. Some people have criticized it as being one of the ugliest buildings ever, but hey, it really adds something unmistakable in Newport.

Opened in 1850, Newport is (in 2019-20) the second busiest station in Wales after Cardiff Central…read more The station is situated close to the remains of Newport Castle near the River Usk. The station has gone through several rebuildings in its history, and until 2009 the main terminal building was the large brick office block with classical detailing, built in 1923 by the then Great Western Railway, on the south side of the station, close to the castle. In 2007 a new platform 4 was added on the north side of the station, and in 2009 a new entrance and concourse and a second bridge was built in preparation for the 2010 Ryder Cup, being held nearby. This provided new car parking facilities, a new concourse and taxi/drop off point on the south side, and a new passenger entrance on the north side. The old concourse and entrance in the 1923 building was then closed. The design of the new concourse and bridge has attracted some criticism, on grounds of aesthetics (it was nominated for the 2011 "Carbuncle Cup" for the ugliest building of the year), because it is further from the town centre than the old building, and because it has suffered from intermittent problems with rainwater leaking onto the concourse and stairs. It is also much smaller than the original building and can get congested. On the plus side, the developments have made all platforms accessible by lifts. Current regular services (pre-Covid) are based on 2 trains per hour to/from London, and hourly services to each of Portsmouth via Bristol, Taunton via Bristol, Nottingham via Birmingham, Manchester Piccadilly via Bristol Parkway, Manchester via Hereford and Crewe, and Cheltenham via Gloucester. All trains going west head stop at Cardiff, with hourly onward services to Swansea, Carmarthen and Maesteg. Some of the Carmarthen services are extended to Milford Haven. Occasional direct services also run to Brighton and Tenby. The station has a small cafe, newsagent/bookshop, toilets (accessible and with baby changing facilities) and a booking office. There is no cash machine. There are covered bicycle spaces, a taxi rank, and two nearby car parks. A handful of Newport Bus services also stop at the station.
