Physical punishment!!! My son (3 year old) constantly saying that One of the toddler teachers pinched his hand because he was not sleeping after lunch (BTW, the policy is that the nap is not mandatory for kids). It was strong enough to leave redness and bruise even after 24 hours, and we informed DCYF. Any policy, any condition; is really physical punishment allowed??? When we shared our concern with the director and expected to fire that so-called teacher or move her to another class by EOD, she refused and just asked if we want to withdraw and get refund. Pros: - we got lots of picture updates - they do tons of activities with the kids - my kid liked all the teachers - covered playground for the rain/sun (though it gets pretty cold without the sun) - decent food Cons: - not the cheapest (not the most expensive either) - my kid seems to get sick more here (they have floaters in the morning & late afternoon, and a lot of teachers send their own kids in other classes, so it seems like viruses will not be contained to a single classroom) - parking lot is a pain during pickup/dropoff Overall I think this is a well-run school that cares about kids & its staff. read more

My wife and her sister went here in the 90's for Daycare then preschool, and they loved it! Now my son goes here now too! We aboslutely love it here. It can feel pricey, but let's be honest, all child care is expensive. We are so pleased with the staff & the teachers. We've even had fantastic conflict resolution when your child might have an incident with another. They took care of the situation in the aboslute best way possible. They also use an awesome app to keep track of your kids during the day with updates and pics/videos! You can also easily communicate with the teachers whenever you want. TD;LR: My daughter's teacher tested positive for COVID-19 only nine days into a two-month summer program here. We didn't feel safe sending her there anymore, so we withdrew from the summer camp. We were still forced to pay almost $3000. The CEO is also extremely unprofessional and completely ignores emails. Did I mention we only withdrew from there because we no longer felt safe because her teacher tested positive for COVID-19? And now, here's my novel of a review: After months of quarantine and gauging the situation, we enrolled our daughter in their summer program. We knew the risks of having her attend during a global pandemic but we were assured that they never had a case nor even potential exposure from any of the staff or families, and that they were stickler about safety and cleanliness. Plus, they had been open the entire time, so I assumed everyone was doing their part both in and out of the daycare to stay safe. NINE DAYS into the program, we got the gut-wrenching email that was sent center-wide, informing us that "one of the teachers from the downstairs summer camp class tested positive for COVID-19." Well, &#*%. I tried to get more information - the only thing I wanted to know was if my daughter directly exposed. They refused to disclose any information to families about who may have been exposed to the infected person (Note: I wasn't seeking the teacher's identity - I know that's protected by HIPAA). I knew my daughter's teacher had been gone all week and since she was in one of the summer camp classes, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that, yes, it was my daughter's teacher (also, they pretty much ended up telling me that it was her teacher, claiming that they DID let us know exactly which class was affected (no, they didn't) in their communications when I kept on pressing about their frustrating way of communicating this). We were luckily able to get tested immediately and all tested negative. Thank any and all higher beings and spirits! After this scare, we decided to withdraw both our daughters from their respective daycares - the added risk of exposure just wasn't worth it in the end. My younger daughter's daycare was amazing and immediately let us know that they completely understood where we were coming from and that moving forward, we won't be receiving any bills from them. Kind of what you would expect, given the global pandemic going on, when your child was directly exposed to someone who was tested positive, no? Newport Children's School's response... not so much. They demanded that we still pay them the full tuition for August, even though we withdrew because we no longer felt safe sending our daughter there. Now, hear me out. We had paid the tuition for July and I wasn't asking for a refund on the two weeks of July we missed (one week from the center closure that they're paying back to the families anyway and the other week from us withdrawing after the COVID exposure). Nor was I expecting the $500 deposit that goes towards August's tuition back. So, by the time this mess happened, we had already paid them just under TWO THOUSAND dollars. I don't think it's completely unreasonable for us to be able to withdraw and not expect to be billed for the rest of August's tuition, when, again, and I can't emphasize this enough, the ONLY reason why we left was because her teacher tested positive for COVID-19. We paid the remainder of the tuition because legally speaking, I signed a payment agreement. I know I don't have any legal standing (maybe I do but it's not worth hiring a lawyer to go after them) but I would have thought they would have more compassion given the fact that my daughter was directly exposed to their staff member who tested positive for COVID-19. But nope, the CEO just straight up refused to answer my emails after saying that we owe them money and ghosted me. The level of unprofessionalism - just wow. Don't make the same (expensive) mistake I made with this daycare. read more

Our experience with NCS has been extraordinary.The teachers are very caring and accommodating.The pre school academic curriculum is excellent. There are lots of STEM based activities throughout the day. Our son has made great progress in verbal communication,handwriting, art work and confidence building. The school has a great indoor play area which is quite effective for rainy and extreme summer days. My son is 4 and he has been going to NCS for a month now. He has never been away from us for more than 3 hours before this, so staying at a school for a span of 8 hours did not go down well for him for the first two weeks. However I am immensely thankful to the staff members, especially the teachers for constantly trying to accommodate a child's demand and incessant need of being comforted and assured that he is in a safe environment. They have always taken our suggestions into consideration with immediate effect. They keep me updated with his day to day activities by sending pictures of him or a little piece of information bout him that calms our anxious mind. My son is doing much better in terms of wanting to go to school. I hope it only gets better. I totally recommend this school for both mental and social enrichment. read more

My son started attending Newport Children's School in September of last year. I remember being worried about his transition because it would be his first time in a structured, social setting and I was also expecting baby #2 during the same week of his enrollment. The first few weeks were rough. He had trouble adjusting to the school's nap schedule and also had difficulty using the restroom. I remember his teacher cradling him for an hour just so he could sleep comfortably. However, as time passed, I noticed a stark difference from when he was first enrolled. He became much more independent and confident. He was absolutely flourishing. His vocabulary exploded and he talked about his "best friend" all of the time. He became quite curious and would ask me all sorts of questions. He also insists on helping with household chores now! He's come a long way since (and it's only been 3 months!) and I know it's because of the teachers and staff at NCS. I'm looking forward to enrolling my daughter there once she's old enough! read more

My daughter has been attending this school since the summer of 2002. She will start first grade there this fall, and I wish they had classes for the rest of elementary school, but first graders are the oldest kids they teach. Many of the teachers, the director, and the office manager have all been at this school for more than twenty years. Their dedication and happiness to their work really shows, and the kids love them as much as they love the kids. There's nothing like the experience of a teacher like Miss Linda, who has been potty-training three year olds for 18+ years! My daughter is ahead of her peers academically and is already a good reader, speller, and artist. She is ahead of kids two years older than her in math and science. She's never once complained about being pushed, or rushed, or made to do things she doesn't understand. The teachers show them all kinds of things and encourage the kids to explore everything; along the way, they get science, math, history, and new vocabulary, all naturally part of learning about the things that interest them. My daughter's kindergarten class of 21 kids has two teachers, one with over twenty years' experience and the other is from Thailand, where she taught school for five years. The kids have music and Spanish classes twice a week and get physical exercise at least twice a day, every day, rain or shine, thanks to the excellent huge covered play decks (and the generous outdoor area). Tuition is about mid-range; there are definitely pricier places and cheaper places too, but I think it's worth it. The school is open from 6:15 am until 6:30 pm every weekday except for six holidays (New Years' Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas). They are open during the public school breaks, teacher workdays, and all of that, making it very easy for parents to work full-time, demanding jobs. Tuition also includes three snacks every day and a cooked lunch. The food is excellent and nutrition is emphasized. This is not your public-school tots-and-a-burger junk food... the kids eat salads, fish, soup, and all kinds of good-for-them-things that parents sometimes have trouble getting them to eat! The staff is great about accommodating food allergies and most of the classrooms are completely peanut-free, making it easier for allergic kids like my daughter. The kids go to the public library twice a month and on another field trip at least once a month. I love that the tuition fee includes ALL supplies (we don't provide anything except our kid, sunscreen, and a change of clothes!) and ALL field trip expenses. I'm a father of 4 with kids spread out from ages 17 to 7 weeks at the time this was written. My two older kids have gone to a variety of high end schools in the Issaquah / Sammamish area, so I've had the misfortune of paying up to $2400/mo for child care expenses at what was supposed to be a high end facility. I sent my third child, Kai, to Newport's Children School from ages 3 to 5 and have had no regrets. The staff has always treated us like family, and my son loves Ms Yasmin and Ms Yvette like family members. My son is bi-lingual (Korean and English) and has a very inquisitive mind that was nurtured and blossomed at NCS. He also is an Alpha male personality with a strong will, but they knew how to handle him in a way that didn't kill his spirit (as other schools had done with my older son). While I do think that Spectrum Learning Center did a better job pushing my older kids (both of whom ended up in the gifted program in the Issaquah School District), I think Kai exited NCS with a better appreciation for learning new things. The office management is disorganized! For the second time this year I'm fuming mad (and it is not like me) as a result of their disorganization. They do NOT mark their calendars for things like US holidays or any other religious minority MAJOR holidays. For parents who care so deeply about their kid's education and being involved, it is DEEPLY upsetting to be told last minute that, "OH, by the way you kids performance .. the one they've been working on all year. We just moved it to Memorial Day Weekend!" Similar situation for back to school night which was schedule on the holiest day of my religion. Not ok. I reached out on both occasions and they made changes or accommodations, which I do appreciate. But guys, you are an educational institution. Your job is to be educated and know what's going on in the world. It should not take an irate parent to clue you in. An effective administrator must know how to use a calendar. There are amazing calendar apps that do ALL the work for you (apple allows you to import various types of calendars). Had this been a one time incident, okay pass. I'm giving the school 3.5 stars because I DO like the teacher my daughter has very much and everyone is friendly. read more

I wish I had read all the reviews of the school before putting my son in the school. looking through some of the reviews of how their kids was disciplined and sent to director office it rings the bell.Same story with us My son has been going to daycare and pre-school for the past 2 years. We started at NCS in August and after 2 weeks the thing started. He was sent to directors office for small misbehavior's and urgent and emergency calls were made to come and pick him up within 1 hour. Every 3 year old throws tantrums and are stubborn, and most daycare and schools know how to deal with them. My son is a calm and shy kid, who like any other toddler has his moments, but I would expect that teachers are trained to handle them. If the kids needs to be disciplined and shown how to behave in group setting, I am all for it, but putting them in directors office and making emergency calls is crazy. After the 2nd emergency call in 1 week, we just took him out and put him in another pre-school and he is doing great. We explained the new teacher what happened and she gave us her 1 month assessment, and said he is perfect for almost 4 year old boy. Maybe as they the director mentioned that this is a BIG school with lots of students., My kids class had 30 students with 3 teacher. I would suggest put your kid here only if you meet the following criteria 1) you kid is the most well behaved and nice'est person in the world 2) you dont mind emergency pickup's multiple times a week 3) all the blame is on the kid IF something goes wrong. 4) You want your kid to be labelled as having some ADD symptoms(My wife shut the director from even going there, as my wife is a physician and she knows something about it) 5) no feedback or daily notes on how or what the kid did at school They are cheaper than the other top tier pre-school, but that was not an issue for us. Anyway NCS is lucky my wife is not writing this review or she would be blasting the attitude of the director by now. read more

Great staff at the office. Even though it's a big school, they know you by name and remembers your requests. Everything is highly organized. My child is thriving here after being in two other preschool/Montessori's in the area that was not a good fit. My child is learning about new topics every week and I know she is learning because she incorporates it in her everyday life. One week she is looking for all living things, the next she is explaining gas vs liquid to me. Been here for 2 years and will consider Kindergarden here as well. Surprised at the other reviews. My daughter began attending Newport Children's School when she was twelve months old and just graduated from kindergarten in June. We have had a great experience at Newport and are sad to be moving on to public school next month. The teachers and other staff at Newport create a warm, safe environment where I always felt comfortable leaving my child. When my daughter was younger, she was very shy and slow to warm up to new people and situations. I believe that the consistent nurturing care she has received at Newport over the years has helped her to grow into the confident and adventurous child she is today. The kindergarten program at Newport is exceptional. My daughter was reading by December and finished the school year with a strong grasp of both language arts and math skills. I appreciate not having to think about lunches and snacks each morning before school as they are included in the tuition. The only thing that has bothered me during our time at Newport is the parking lot. It is too small for a school this size and it can get backed up during drop off and pick up. Besides that, Newport is a wonderful school; I would highly recommend it to anyone. read more

Our daughter started there in July '06 when we moved to the Seattle area from Texas. She had just turned 3, and within two weeks we could see a positive difference in her! She suddenly knew her alphabet, could count, was singing songs we'd never heard, using good manners... we are total rookies at parenting so we thought she just wasn't "ready" for all that. Turns out, she was just in a lazy daycare before! Also I can't say enough about the patience, practice and persistence they used when came to potty training. Their focus and support during the process was amazing especially with the difficulty of our recent move making it a harder adjustment period for her. I found their rates competitive. They include meals (and now she eats salad and other 'green' things at home since she gets them at school and sees the other kids eating it. LOVE peer pressure!) and they have parent's night out about once a month for a reasonable fee. Our daughter loves her teachers and rarely if ever has 'clingy' drop offs... whereas in Texas it was a daily heartbreak first thing in the morning leaving a crying child behind. I only have good words about this institution. Not only they took good care of my toddler, she received lots of love and attention from her teachers (Miss Kaylin and Miss Joyce) she had learned many words ever since started. It was a hard transition at first because she has never been separated from me, but within two weeks she was already very well adapted. I love how attentive the teachers are and how they will give me any detailed updates about how My child was doing during the day. The management won't return supply fees made prior to the Covid outbreak, even though our child won't be attending because of Covid and too much inside time. People can't pay their rent and they feel they have a right to keep this money. Bad news for the community. Talked to a staff that works there. This person has to work even though she is sick. She also tells me that there is no hot water cooker or a teacher's lounge of any kind, and that all the rooms in building has been converted to classrooms. That doesn't seem very nuturing to me. Teachers deserves basic amenities just as much as students do. Their care is important. The working conditions there doesn't seem satisfactory at all. Also there seems to be a lot hidden drama behind the scenes with staff. Their organization structure seems sadly lacking. I hope the standards that applys to the K-12 system will be applied to preschool as well someday. read more

I had my daughter at Newport in Pre-K with Ms Alina for a year. I love this school and I loved her class! I would recommend to anyone that can afford it (it's pricey but most good schools are). I would re-enroll her in a second if I needed to and I have her baby sister on the wait list. She was learning something new every day, and really interesting stuff that i wouldn't think you'd teach to 4 year olds! They had a new lesson every few weeks and my daughter loved all of it. When I'd pick her up each day the kids were happy and quietly playing, coloring, etc. It wasn't a crazy madhouse and it was clear the teachers had full control over the class. This put me at ease and made me feel really comfortable with her being there. There's nothing worse that picking up your child from school and seeing crying screaming kids running rampid which I experienced at another school Ms Alina is wonderful, sweet, nurturing and gives 100% attention to each of her "friends". She doesn't let the kids misbehave and makes sure they treat each other kindly. She's great and I'd trust her with my Olivia anytime. The teachers we have had have all been very loving, caring and empathetic. I enjoy working with the teachers. The people at the front, especially the director are not so friendly. She was friendly when giving us a tour and getting us in but she doesn't even acknowledge or say hi to parents and kids. The only good think is the ours and at least my daughter's teachers are very nice. The biggest disappointment is that they create impression that they almost have no spots left and if you want - you have to hurry up . This happend to me with signing for the summer program. I went there multiple times and talked to lady who was responsible for signing. I told her that we may have grandma coming and I most likely may not need summer camp, but since the spaces are filling so quick (per staff) I felt the urge to sign. I asked many times if I will be able to Cancell and was told that "yes". The only thing, that I would not get my deposit back! I did sign the papers! To my biggest surprise and disappointment - when I called 2 month before the camp and said that I want to Cancell - I was told that I signed the paper and I am responsible to pay for the camp !!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I talked to the director, who was very rude like it was stated in other reviews:((( and was told that this is it!!! Even that they claimed that there is usually waiting list , they can't do anything and that we are responsible to pay or they would send us to collection ! So either there is a policy to trap people into signing or the ally who is responsible for work, has no sense what she is doing. And the comment by the lady on other reviews is lie also:((( "We are usually able to resolve parental concerns to their satisfaction as they occur. Now that i need to go back to work and need daycare for my children, I am so sad that i don't have much choices for me to choose from. My two childrens were in this school two years ago and I am hoping I am alone who experienced the worst out of this school. I waited a while to get into this school. My kids were originally in Bellevue school district early learning program which was much afforable but I wanted to look for something more private. But it was my mistake. My first one got into the Pre-K program. She seemed to have a good time. Time to time she would complain that there was a male teacher who will hug her on his lap although she did not need any care. Her complaints grew bigger and bigger as time passes. During recess, she wanted to hide somewhere because she did not wanted to be hugged. I brought up the issue to the school and they notified the male teacher. They did not say sorry and they blamed my child. It wasn't okay but i let it go. Additionally, her main teacher was constantly sick. She would be absent one or two days every two weeks. And the sub teacher was not following the curriculm. That was for my older daughter. My younger one joined later on. She was three. When she was put in to the school, she would cry so long. The main teacher was on leave so the sub was there who was much younger and I saw her on her cell phone time to time. My daughter had a hard time fitting into this school. She was crying too much. One day, i went to school sooner than pick up time, my daughter was laying and crying all alone on the office bench. Teacher said my daughter was interrupting the class too much so they had to separate her. I took her home and she fell in sleep until 3am in the morning. The next day, I dropped her and went to pick her up early again. Again, she was crying all alone in the bathroom while everybody else was having lunch on the other side. I was really mad, and I took her out and put her into my car to take her home. But I thought no one saw me and my daughter leaving ( there was no one in the office either) and later they would look for my daughter. I kindly went back and looked for the teacher way in the back of lunch room to tell i was taking my daughter home. I withdrew her out on that day and paid over $700 for withdral penalty which was their policy. After I quit my job, I wanted to move my older one to three days instead of 5 days. They did not let me. They said I had to wait until the spot gets available. I understood that they had to make money so I withdrew her out again. These were the facts. I am again looking for day care for my children but this is one of the three places who can do after school care for my older one. And i am considering this place again. I must be crazy. read more

My daughter started in Newport in 2010 and will be attending kindergarten there in sept 2014 so our family has a long and current history with Newport. First of all I am surprised by some of the reviews regarding the office team as being unfriendly. My experiences have been the exact opposite and the staff and teachers are friendly, professional and engaging. As tor the director and asst director they have our family's respect and gratitude for their dedication to the children. They have been at this a long time and it shows. They run a great school. We cannot say enough about the teachers our daughter has had over the years. They have been loving and supportive and she continues to grow and develop. If you are looking for a pre-school or kindergarten and want a great environment for your child check out Newport. We can afford to send our daughter anywhere and if we had to do it over again, we would choose Newport. read more

We had our son enrolled here for three years, through kindergarten. Looking back, it was a wonderful experience for our family and our son really enjoyed attending the school. The kindergarten curriculum is challenging, but not overwhelming. The teachers are great and they do a nice job of keeping parents informed. We were on the wait list about eight months and did have to turn down the first spot we were offered, but we were put right back on the list and called again three months later. Our son was sent to the director's office once, and we have no complaints about how it was handled. Overall, it is a great school and we will miss it! read more

They make you think there is a long waitlist and you'd be lucky to get in, but then you miraculously get in but only if you pay for the summer months. The teachers were good and friendly, but the front office staff is just ok. They have a great facility and playground. Yes, they called us once and we declined a spot at the time due to personal reasons but we went back 2 times after that to ensure we were still on the list - They confirmed we were. When I called again after not having heard from them for about 6 months, I was told we were NO LONGER on the waitlist. They had allegedly called and left a voicemail offering us a spot and we never called back. I offered to show phone records that clearly indicated no incoming calls from them on the day they saif they had called and several days before or after incase they had their dates mixed up - but they were unwilling to listen.Oh but wait - they offered to put us back on the list and what wait another 6 months!?!? What was even more appalling was the complete ineptitude of the center Director to even try and resolve the issue. She basically responded to an email saying I was being disrespectful because I recommended that they start using written commonucation to let parents know when they were being dropped off a wait list. My daughter is now in her third year at Newport and we plan to enroll her through Kindergarten. The school's amenities are great....music room, covered outdoor play areas, spacious and engaging classrooms. The staff and teachers are committed, professional, loving and always encouraging our daufhter. She has had her fair share of trips to the office, but I appreciate the efforts made by the office staff to help our daughter get through a.tough day without embarrassing her or making her feel like an outcast. Our daughter can't wait to go to school evety day since she began here, and she loves the monthly TGIF's too. The meals and snacks are healthy, balanced and I appreciate that I don't have to struggle to pack fresh lunches that will keep well without refrigeration. The staff in the office are dedicated, friendly, and reliable. There is very very little turnover and I can tell the director really values the teachers and parents. My family and I are so grateful for Cynthia, Leslie, the teachers and for this school. read more

My children have been attending Newport Children's School for the past several years. My son was there for 3 years (now moved on to elementary school) and my daughter is now starting her second year there. The teachers and staff are wonderful - I cannot say enough about how much effort they put into the program, and they really care about the children. Both of my kids have enjoyed the science-based curriculum and loved the integration of reading/writing, art, music, problem solving as well as the social interaction, exploration time and outdoor play. We have had great teachers, and the student to teacher ratio is very good (for pre-school and pre-K there were 8-10 kids per teacher). The facilities are great - covered play areas are awesome for rainy days, and the large playground and sandbox always popular. I also like the snacks and lunch provided. Always healthy choices, and the weekly food is pretty varied. Also, a perk for parents is that once a month the school does "TGIF" where you can enjoy a date night while the kids spend a few hours at the school, and the kids love it! All in all, we have been very happy with Newport Children's School and feel that our kids have gained valuable experience and are well-prepared for elementary school. I was very surprised to read the review from the parent with a poor experience as we have had nothing but positive experiences. I highly recommend this school. read more
