Thanks...I sat and waited and wasted my day for this crew. So one guy showed up next day and got it done by himself. When I was looking for a mover to get me from my super overstuffed one-bedroom walk up in Bethesda to my new place in Rockville, I wasn't sure where to start. Yelp offered to send my request to several local companies, and NewRay was the first company to respond. I made my request late in the work day, and NewRay was incredibly responsive to my messages throughout the evening. They had solid questions to ask about my property to help them formulate a knowledgeable and real quote for me. Most other competitor quotes were loosy-goosy approximations that made me nervous - and had LOTS of footnotes about all sorts of added fees. NewRay was direct, super professional, and very accurate. (I loved that their inventory form kept a running total of approximate cubic feet my stuff would take up in the truck!) On the day of the move, the three-man moving team led by Anthony arrived right on time (after calling with an ETA, too) and wasted no time getting everything down two stories with TLC. We selected this moving company because of the great Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, the experience was less than stellar. When the movers showed up they were laughing and joking, telling us their names were Tom Cruise and some other movie star. I was afraid they had been drinking even though it was 8:30 on a Friday morning. We had everything boxed up and ready to go and thought this would be a quick move. They asked us if we wanted to wrap the chairs, the table and the sofa. I thought that was odd. Wrapped as opposed to what...leaving the furniture unprotected? So, I said yes and then they asked me if I wanted them to wrap the coffee table, which I replied yes to. They bubble wrapped the coffee table and charged us extra, also they make you pay for tape and the tape alone was $40 because they used an insane amount of tape to wrap everything up because it takes time (you pay by the hour) and you have to pay for the tape. So, it makes sense, right? It seemed like a minor move for 3 men (1bedroom and an office) but it took 5 hours just for them to move the boxes downstairs, disassemble the bed and wrap the sofa, dressers, coffee table and chairs. We told them they needed to wrap our dining room table as well given they were taking it out of the apartment with no protection, they said they would once they took it down to the truck. Once we got to the other location (2 miles away), they told us that our sofa and bed wouldn't fit in the elevator. We knew that wasn't true because the guy who owned the condo before us had a bigger bed and sofa. So, we had to instruct them on how to position the sofa to fit into the elevator and that they needed to unscrew the bed. It seems like they should have known how to do that since they were supposed to be professional movers. They then broke 2 dressers during the move, scratched up out dining room table (the one they promised to wrap once it was taken down to the truck) damaged our hardwood floors, scratched the newly painted walls and then proceeded to tell us that something always breaks when you move. That's just the way it is. Excuse me?!?! Basically, they could have cared less. So, then we spoke to the manager and she came out to inspect the damage. She agreed that the hardwood floor damage was new and saw the broken furniture and scratched up table. We didn't want to go through insurance because we know what kind of runaround we would get with the insurance company. So, we agreed that they would repair the furniture, hardwood floor and take an hour off from the move (very generous of us, I thought especially given they quoted us half of what they ended up charging us given how long it took for them to move our furniture). The manager told us she would call us to schedule someone to come out and repair our dressers and the hardwood floors. It's been 2 weeks now and we have not heard back from her. I don't like leaving negative reviews but I tend to rely on Yelp reviews and don't want anyone to go through a similar experience with this company because they relied on all of the positive reviews. I hope it was just a fluke, but given we haven't heard back from management regarding this issue, that's doubtful. The fish rots from the head. read more

She made it very easy and there were no hidden charges - the price I was quoted is what I paid. The guys arrived on time, and were very professional and experienced. I live in a large, elevator building and there were a lot of locked doors they had to go through, the freight elevator was down so we had to use the regular elevator, and my apartment is a hike from there. None of these were issues for them - they had the right equipment and knew what they were doing. They were very careful with my things, yet efficient, and I couldn't be happier. DON'T BE SWINDLED or HAVE TO PAY RANSOM TO BIASED NEWRAY LIARS, & NOW DEFAMERS!!!. So, they arrive, Dylan & Walter, one small & skinny guy (who looks like he could have been a meth user) & a guy with an accent who looks like he was possibly from Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan). They started off well & efficiently. Mr. Kazakhstan was very rude off the bat, very dismissive., was extremely careless with my things & slammed boxes that were clearly marked fragile & glass included. The skinny guy was nice at first & seemed to be working diligently. I remarked that it was going well & fast. Unbeknownst to me, those were the secret hypnosis words, that turned them into sloths who began taking 20-25-minute breaks. When it came time to move my furniture, Mr. Kazakhstan told me the blankets were free, but they'd have to charge me to tape the blankets. At all times, I offered my own supplies for use. Each time, Mr. Kazakhstan either refused to use my supplies or if he did, he told me he was going to charge me anyway (but ultimately took them to use for future moves). They didn't have tools with them. Nearly 3.5 hours in, still at my old place & after the 6th 25 min break. I asked Mr., Kazakhstan if we could try & make my other loading dock reservation at my new place. He gets irate, raises his voice & starts yelling that I know nothing about moving. I asked but what about all the breaks, while the skinny guy was currently on his usual 25-minute smoke & girlfriend chat break. Mr. Kazakhstan said he thought that I should be more understanding & that he couldn't help that he had the sh!?$ all day, that they could charge whatever & based on the contract, I'd have, so it didn't matter. He then threatened to stop and take my property currently on his truck, because I looked like someone who wouldn't pay. I stepped out to call no-last name Sasha, the so-called rep. who set everything up. She talked to me in this phony baby-coo voice & explained that the contract demanded I pay whatever price the workers said. 45 minutes later, we're at my new apartment. I take 5 minutes to pay the cleaning crew & have front office activate the freight elevator. They're still refusing to get out. Mr. Kazakhstan directs the skinny guy to ask are you paying now. I said the contract explained payment was due for finished work. I wasn't about to pay them twice. Another break for skinny. I go prop the door open for the movers. Back at the truck again, the skinny guy hops out again & says 'Jay' the owner & Mr. Kazakhstan don't think someone like you would pay, demanded immediate payment & threatened to not unload & Just leave with my stuff & keep it in storage, to get more money. Seeing I was extremely pissed, the skinny guy said I could pay for the hours thus far w/no further charges, because again 'Jay' the owner says not to unload your things. Angry as I was, I said fine, but asked where the 'I look like someone who wouldn't pay' thing came from. I asked if I could speak to 'Jay' the owner. The skinny guy looked at me & said he was calling the police & that he knew somebody like me wouldn't like that. As an African American, I realized what he meant, & I now understood 'Jay's & Mr. Kazakhstan's unmerited claim that I looked like someone who wouldn't pay. As we waited, I was getting the license plate number of the truck, when Mr. Kazakhstan turned the truck on & attempted to run me over. When residents started coming out the back door, he stopped moving & turned the truck off. When the police arrived, & talked with me, they told me there was nothing they could do & said that I'd probably have to pay to get my stuff back and sue later. When the officer asked the skinny guy how much, the guy came back with a price of close to $1000. I was enraged & asked how 4 hours (technically 2.5 due to their seven 20-25-minute breaks) at the contract rate of $90 came out close to $1000. I stated they were ripping me off, the officers said there was nothing they could do. I angrily went over to hand my card up to the skinny dude, & they just drove off with my stuff. When I pleaded with the officers & asked how they were just letting them steal my stuff, the white officer replied, I told them to go because you weren't going to pay. I exclaimed yes I was & showed him my card in my hand. He realized what he'd done & said I should call them to come back. I called 3 times, when Skinny answered he yelled not to call him again. I called Sasha and she said everything would be okay, if I just have her my credit card number. I paid and an hour later, the movers came back beaming that they'd just ripped me off. The skinny guy kept apologizing when Kazakhstan wasn't around. I said nothing. Being almost ran over, Karen'd, racially profiled as someone who wouldn't pay, cheated and charged quadruple for only 2.5 hours of work, & forced to pay ransom for my own property. This company & employees are crooks, and in the least, racist scammers. Don't risk it, it's not worth it. read more

From the men yelling at my mother, MIL and myself to barking at my dogs after specifically saying they were there, to telling us if they moved our furniture they were going to break it and not be blamed. I found NewRay through yelp and thought it was too good to be true. Their reviews are mostly amazing, to the point where I thought this may have been a scam lol. I freaked out last minute and Sasha and the Manager reassured me that their team would be there on the moving date and would call me 30 min prior to their arrival. That's exactly what happened. We've hired NewRay twice. The first time was a good experience. They were prompt, efficient, and reasonably priced. The second time, however, was just the opposite. They brought the wrong-sized truck, which meant that the move took hours longer that it should have -- and therefore cost hundreds of dollars more than it should have. They also lost an expensive new floor lamp (which they subsequently refused to acknowledge or compensate us for -- or even allow us to file a claim on!) and damaged another one (the lampshade was bent and stained a mysterious shade of red). What's more, the "manager" who was supposed to coordinate the move was totally MIA -- she didn't reply to our texts or return our phone calls. In short, they were slow, inefficient, and unreasonably priced. Hire them at your peril. read more

These guys were the light of my day in a very stressful time. From the beginning I had a good feeling about this company and the whole process was easy. They provided me with a link to a site where I could choose all of the items I suspected needed moving, making it easier for me to even remember what I needed to be moved. They quoted me the price and I provided them with a down payment. The movers showed up right on time and they were so quick! I had a few items that were very difficult to maneuver throughout my apartment and they got it all out like it was nothing. Once they finished, the price quoted to me was a substantially less than what I was originally quoted since the time was pro-rated due to the movers quick services. I hired NewRay moving based on Yelp reviews, so I think it's only fair that I will leave my honest review on here also. First let me just start and say that I am a type-A perfectionist with a bit of OCD when it comes to moving and logistics. I like things to happen efficiently and on timely manner. Speaking with Sasha at the office was so easy; she sent me an estimate within hours of submitting my request, and was very responsive to my emails. On the day of my move, the movers came right on time, and even called me prior to let me know they are on their way (which I appreciated). Walter and Nick were my movers that day, and I have nothing but nice and positive things to say about both of them. Walter was the lead mover that day, and he constantly made sure things were moving fast, correct, and efficient. When I raised a concern about this or the other, he was always polite, attentive, and made sure I knew exactly what was going on and what his order with the move was (like I said, a bit of OCD on my part). Walter and Nick moved so fast and professionally. They cared for my things like they were their own. Walter even was nice enough to fix a loose screw on one of my chest's legs (which is something that happened before the move)- how nice is that?! I really appreciated their attention to details, respect to my possessions, fast, friendly, kind and polite. 2/5 stars for quality. Positives: The movers were on time and moved quickly. Negatives: The movers were pretty rough and caused about $150 of damage. My double bookcase was not properly re-assembled. 5/5 stars for value. The final bill went way over the estimate due to re-assembly issues, but still came in about $300-800 below what various competitors would have charged. So, even with the damage, it ended up being the best value by a wide margin. 5/5 stars for follow-up. The double bookcase not being properly re-assembled was a huge headache. Local handyman quotes to fix it averaged around $400 for 2-3 hours + travel, and I couldn't unpack a third of my apartment without it fixed. Jay took the time to made it right in the end, though, and I appreciate that - and it gives me confidence that the company will ultimately stand behind their service, even if it can be a bit patchy. If I had to do it again, I would have transported more of the fragile items on my own and added more padding. With everything said and done, I came out several hundred dollars ahead at the cost of having to deal with some more issues than I'd have liked. Not everyone will agree, but that's still a five-star move in my book. read more

Several items were damaged as a result of my move. The moving company charged double what was quoted. I provided a full inventory and they charged me triple when the move was done. The movers were slow and wasted 2 hours organizing their truck before loading any furniture. They took a lunch break for an hour and didn't work. They took several breaks and brought out one small item at a time to expand the amount of time to move. They are a rip off and on top of it all they damaged y furniture! I also had a home gym to move that they said they could disassemble, move and reassemble. After taking it partially apart, they said it was too complicated and left it like that. I then had to pay another company to move it and reassemble what they did. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

I received a prompt, personalized call after my quote request to review my items for a customized quote. I made a request for the job to be completed in about five hours with the expectation that we usually go over that time. However, the movers were incredibly hard working and completed the move in 5.15 hours. I was impressed. We stayed within a few dollars of the quote, which is rare and truly appreciated. I cannot believe I didn't write a review at the time for this company and I am very, very sorry about that. They were extremely patient with the situation we faced, as my apartment complex was going against its own policies and being less than helpful when we needed to move out. The movers waited patiently and did everything so, SO quickly and smoothly. Not only that, they were the only movers I have ever seen actually figure out how to dismantle my sleeper sofa! Every other moving company I have dealt with (and I have dealt with at least 3 or so in the past several years) just moved the whole thing together, which led to a lot of awkward maneuvering, lengthy discussions about how to get the thing out/in the door, and several paint transfers onto the sofa. One of NewRay's movers knew there was a way to pop the arms and the back off the piece, which changed *everything*. Not only that, they didn't charge us for the time spent dealing with my apartment complex and negotiating with them to let us use the loading space we had *reserved* (they claimed the truck was too big but it was a standard moving truck and the typical moving dock was out of commision due to construction. It was honestly ridiculous). This company really worked with us and did everything they could to give us the benefit of the doubt and get us moved as quickly as possible without sacrificing any of the quality of service. And the the price was honestly extremely reasonable for the DC area. They were well-organized and extremely efficient. They will be my first choice for the next time I move, for sure. Discovered this company on yelp based on the reviews I decided to reach out. They were very responsive to my inquiry. Sasha and I handled everything via e-mail, she was very professional and rapid with all her responses. Was able to send pictures of my previous apartment to give them an idea of what they were working with. Great portal system online to pay holding fee which wasn't large at all. Two days prior Sasha followed up, as stated in initial contract agreement. Day of move, one of the movers called and gave an ETA and he was very punctual with. Very professional movers, one name was Anthony, can't remember the other guy's name (sorry). But they were both so professional and welcoming felt like I was working with family. They handled all items with care and we had one minor issue with getting my couch out my door (heads-up was given) but they made it work well! They took time to break down and put furniture pieces back together and ensured all bolts/nails were tight so furniture would be sturdy.
