Let me take my shoes off before i start (arabic habits) : Apparently this place is TikTok famous. I wouldn't know, I remain a proud TikTok virgin. But I have dated enough white school teachers who "love ethnic food" to hear about this place roughly 86 times, so eventually I had to pull up and investigate. And of course i had to trust the gals the eat taco bell at 2 am post 12 shots. Let's start with the "chicken shawarma," which is ,with respect: about five miles away from an actual shawarma. This is not a shawarma. This is a chicken sandwich that identifies as shawarma. The chicken is okay but a little dry, the flavor is playing hide and seek, and by the time you get home the sandwich has the structural stability of wet cardboard. Also, the vegetables are cut like someone lost a bet and had to chop them blindfolded. Overall? Fine. Would I order it again? Probably not. But given Nashville's current shawarma economy, I understand why some folks are acting like they discovered Atlantis. Personally, I daydream about real shawarma the way people daydream about winning the lottery, or the way poets dream about lost love (in my case that one girl in 8th grade) I also tried the mixed plate (rice, lentil soup, and three meats: kabab, chicken, and beef tikka): Rice: solid. Honest work. Lentil soup: extremely shy. Needs seasoning, confidence, and maybe therapy. Also a bit oily. Chicken: dry enough to file paper work with. Beef tikka: actually pretty good, respect where respect is due. Kabab: could use more garlic, onion, and emotional support. Didn't see a health inspection score posted, and the place could definitely level up on the cleanliness side, nothing terrifying, just not sparkling either. The bald uncle behind the counter is a little dismissive and chaotic, but the man looks like he has personally witnessed several historical events, so I'm choosing compassion. They do carry a wide variety of Arabic groceries and halal raw meats (which I personally can't buy because I'm allergic, tragic and traumatic storyline), and honestly they should give discounts to school teachers because those are the main people marketing this place harder than the actual owners. Not terrible, not life changing. If this is your first shawarma, you'll be impressed. If you grew up eating shawarma, you'll drive home in silence thinking, "we as a society can do better." And also need to be more politically correct naming foods but alas. read more

This was our first time at Newroz Market! We walked in and found the restaurant at the back! We had a hard time figuring out who to talk to when it came to ordering, but everyone was pretty nice to us and tried to help. We had a hard time communicating, so we weren't too sure what we were ordering! You can sit in an eating area next to the restaurant in the grocery store and you clean up after yourself. It seemed to have a steady flow of customers too that seemed to be regulars. It also seemed like a lot of other people were getting a wrap instead of the plates like we got. The sandwich was really good! When you are finished eating, you go up to the front of the grocery store and pay there! We just told them what we ordered and they had a record of it. We were pretty confused at first and not entirely sure how we were supposed to pay! It was about $20 for all of our food, which in Nashville feels unheard of unless you are eating fast food... Overall, I would come here again! I liked it but think I would also try other places nearby. We also got some pita bread and baklava to try. I honestly feel like buying their fresh bread and dessert is the way to go! They were priced very well and very fresh! read more

like all the other Middle East food services in the area, this place is too small and crowded with merchandise. The personals are nice specially the man who working in the restaurant in the back. The restroom is probably the reason for my two stars, it looked like a restroom in some left out village in middle east in 1920. very dirty and dark. Oh, also I noticed few expired foods including a molded diary. Not a lot of fresh fruit options compared to others. read more

I'm so glad that I stopped by this place for lunch today. I had the chicken and meat sandwich along with a meat sambosa. They were both excellent as was the service. To top it off, I saw a woman walk by with freshly baked baklava as I was munching away. I couldn't resist and picked a selection of still warm treats as I paid for my meal. There is a small dine in area inside the market and fresh bread made all day long. The halal meat is cut fresh as you want it as well and we always come to this market for fresh halal meat. I absolutely love these kinds of places: authentic, wonderful food, and inexpensive. I came to this Middle Eastern market (near the zoo) mainly for the chicken shawarma, in the back of the store.  You can either get the $5 version in a pita-type bread, or the larger $6 version in a giant naan-like flatbread, rolled up like a burrito.  You can also get gyro meat instead of chicken.   It was as expected: fragrant, flavorful, chewy, and satisfying.   They have all types of breads here at the back of the store: Giant flatbreads, naan-type breads, pita, and a few others that I'm not even familiar with.  I saw a lady load up her cart with about 20 of the 2-foot long flatbreads.   They must be good!  I'll try it next time.    Bottom line: delicious breads, shawarma/gyros/plates, all inexpensive and fresh. read more

House of Shawarma: Hands down one of the best chicken shawarma I have had. The bread is the best thing you will have ever had! Baked in-house and if you appreciate good bread, this is going to be the palate ruler. The chicken is flavorful and I have not had jalapeño in shawarma before but it does adds spice and pickle-tang. We got the garlic sauce; but add the tahini if you want it to be close to authentic. Now Newroz has baklava by the pound. They have those with nuts and, and... WAIT FOR IT! with SWEET CHEESE. If you thought baklava was with nuts of all kinds only, do your soul a favor and ask, seek the sweet cheese baklava. It is a flavor close to home and oh! so Soul satisfying. You don't know what you have been missing out on till you have tried that! So I think we will be visiting Newroz very often. I stopped into Newroz Market today for lunch. I ordered the #8 chicken sandwich. It came with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles in it but can be customized as everything is made to order. I am not usually a big fan of pickles but they definitely added a complexity to the sandwich and I would add the pickles again next time too. The chicken was perfectly spiced, hot, and moist. I added garlic sauce and hot sauce. The garlic sauce was garlicky but not overpowering. The bread was what made the sandwich stand out. The bread is made in house and was clearly fresh. It was light and chewy but crunchy on the outside after being grilled. The sandwich is quite large and could easily be shared. At $6 you can't beat the price. Customer service was fast and attentive and associates offered recommendations without me even having to ask. I will definitely be back for another sandwich and bread soon. read more

The smaller sandwiches are 4.99 and are in a pita like bread and the larger sandwiches are rolled in flat bread. Their dates are from different countries and priced accordingly. They have a variety of nuts, flours and spices. Wonderful pistachio and filo desserts. Friendly owners and workers. The Sambusas are not always available. Great food, great price, nice people. Breads are amazing, and shwarma is the best in Nashville. Large wraps are a great value, loaded with meat. They also have spicy peppers that add a nice flavor. Variety of sauces to choose from. The new thing is kuba, almost like a papa rellena but made with bulgar. Meat stuffed and delicious. Baklava is also great, though not made in house. Nashville's "Little Kurdistan" section has led me to explore Newroz Market just next door to Azadi International Food Market. Newroz is similar to Azadi in that they sell grocery staples and have a bakery but Newroz also sells shawarma sandwiches & plates, shish kabobs, roast chickens and hummus. First trip - I had a large beef shawarma sandwich which is served on naan bread and a small chicken shawarma which is served on sammon, a different shaped bread with a nice crust. The naan is softer and more more chewy than the sammon. They are traditional shawarma roasted and sliced right off a vertical rotisserie. Shawarma is an Arabic word from the Turkish çevirme meaning "turning." I ordered mine with everything and that included lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, tzatziki and hot sauce. They had a lot of other sauces in bottles but I didn't ask about them all yet, but I will. I overheard someone ordering theirs with mayonnaise so there's that. Priced at 4.99 & 5.99, these are a good deal. They are good sandwiches but fall somewhat short of A & H Mart's shawarma. Ibrahim is still the best I've had. (Next shawarma to try is Sulav then Mazi.) It's fun to eat in this bustling little store, there are four or five tables which fill up quickly at peak hours. Next I'll try the kabobs. read more

Inside the typical middle eastern market, which also offers a great bakery, is a House of Shawarma stand where you can order a wrap. It is only $4.99 and ends up being the size of Chipotle burrito which is a great deal. They carve the delicious chicken or lamb as you order. You can eat at a few booths or take it to go. We try to avoid going to stores to be on the safe side. We ordered quarbani from here. Again trying to be safe, we called to make sure the goat we ordered was ready to be picked up. They took our name and said yes come as it's ready. After going to the store and waiting over 30 minutes we found out the order was still not ready! I understand during covid it may take longer and that is acceptable. What was not acceptable was lying to us saying it was ready then having us wait in the store for so long as it's dangerous and exposed us to others and increases the changes of catching cvod19. There was no paper menu and no menu board, and several people were in line behind me who looked like they may have been on a timed lunch break. So after talking to the guy in front of me and the guy working the kitchen, I essentially just said "make me two delicious sandwiches, the only thing I hate is a black olive." And he did. The sammon is basically a pita baked in house but so much better than that. The sandwich was packed with meat and veggies. The garlic white sauce was awesome. This is a clean, neat, well stocked Middle Eastern (Kurdish tradition) market. There is a flat bread bakery in the back making bread in traditional brick ovens, there is a halal meat counter for your halal meat needs, and there is as gyro bar with a meat carver ready for you to order. How the gyro bar works is that open a freshly made pita (from the wonderful brick oven), open it, and then carve off beef or chicken (2 different spindles), then they put tomato and cucumber and which sauce you would like. It is delicious. As part of the bakery, they sell flat breads with toppings. The flat bread I got was one with a spiced lamb mixture on top, and one with cheese. Wonderful! At the front, they have spiced chicken sambusas (small hand pies perfect for snack as you walk out of the store). Some of the hard to find stock they have are date vinegar, rose water, and honey preserved sweet chestnuts. There is plenty of parking. read more
