This was a mission request by my US friend to get him some Cuban cigars. A brief point to note. The US still has product embargos from the 1960s on the communist government of Cuba. How foolish is that policy after 60+ years. Neat location on the second floor of shops in the Grafton Street shopping district. As we entered the fragrant shop we were greeted by a young man who looked as if he stepped out of some H.G. Wells' Steampunk world. But he was very knowledgeable and helpful by asking questions to determine our choices. Sorry that I lost the card with your name. So mission expertly accomplished. It's a battle to make it to the till with all the colourdy paraphernalia in the way, but its a useful place to pick up a few things to fancy-up a gift.

Desmonds is the strangest hodge podge of a store that I've ever been in, but at the same time it…read morekind of works. At the front of the shop they've got a little counter where they serve fancy free-trade coffees and tea. They're quite nice actually and totally unexpected! The middle part of the shop is your basic newsagents with drinks and mags and everything. But then you continued to the back of the store where they've got like costume jewellery, random gadgets, and a whole case display of different pipes. I'm talking wooden Sherlock Holmes style pipes. I left the shop feeling a bit confused, but with the knowledge that if I ever need a really strange assortment of things and I don't feel like going into more than one shop, this might just be the place to return to!

The last time I visited the shop I tried to get the attention of the sales clerk because I wanted to buy one of those expensive Hoodlamb winter coats. These things cost about 300 euros. However the sales clerk guy was too busy having a political debate with some customer at the counter. He never even looked my way or said 'high man'. If you're actually helping someone I can understand, and I can be patient. However it would be courteous for a sales clerk to look my way and say, "be with you in a minute." Since I got no attention, they lost a 300 euro sale. That's a simple rule of business. One they should probably learn if they want to pay the rent. Anyway, I was in Amsterdam a month later and found myself at Hemp Works (address: Nieuwendijk 13). I bought the same Hoodlamb coat there for 200 euro, and the sales girl was nice as pie. She even gave me free hemp lollipops. How cool is that? Sorry "Hemp Company" but you kinda lost my support. I'm a Hemp Works customer now.

They give off the faint odor of hemp balms and lotions. They tell you all the benefits of hemp between bites of their hemp muesli doused in hemp milk. These people might be totally off their rockers, but I am buying what they're selling. I think that hemp is really cool, and the fact that so many products have been created from the stuff is pretty impressive. The Hemp Company (note the initials -THC - not an accident) sells just about everything you can imagine, but with hemp. I found the apparel to be boring, like most hemp stuff, but everything else was great. The bags and backpacks were really cute and sturdy, and the lotions smelled great. I ended up buying some hemp salve that contains calendula which is excellent for healing cuts, rashes and irritations.

Although this establishment is small, their selection of whiskey is quite large and varied. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about what they are selling and, honestly, they couldn't be friendlier. For instance, I was emotionally distraught and conflicted on which whiskey to take home. They offered my wife and I taste test and spoke to us about each bottle and its associated flavor profile. The best was that they didn't try to sell me on anything, it was a genuine conversation. Excellent customer service! Overall, I walked out of there, mission accomplished, with a great experience, two bottles of whiskey, and about five small sample bottles for a little under €200. The exact numbers escape me but my account slowly earns a few € and every now & then at the till I'm reminded that I have credit and I then use the € credit to pay for my ejuices. Just inside the front door, to the right; there's a "clearance section" where products nearing their sell by date are sold super cheap (which is great for trying new flavours without committing so much €, if I don't like a flavour at least it only cost me pennies to find out!). There's lots of kit for DIY / self build hardcore vapers but I've not tried it myself. .... Last point but might be important for some; They allow dogs inside the shop! That alone has to be worth 5 !

What they may not be aware of is that P&P Barry, as well as being one of the smallest newagents in Dublin, sells all manner of pipe paraphernalia. This tiny, wedge shaped shop with standing room for three at the limit sells all the confectionaries, papers and soft drinks you'd expect. On top of this, they have a window display chock-a-block with every conceivable cigar or pipe accessory I could think of. Though I have yet to ask, I would imagine this probably means they also stock a wider range of tobacco than elsewhere. Turns out that the lad behind the counter didn't know but the little shop itself is kind of cute- it's a bit of a mom-and-pop-place or in other words your traditional corner shop. You can get all your basics- papers, bread, drinks- here and yes, they do have sweets at the counter. They just don't seem to get too many people walking in here by accident.
