I only came here once, but my short experience warrants a review. While waiting around in the neighborhood to meet someone for lunch, we needed a little something to tide us over 'til then. As tourists, we were obviously already well-versed in the likes of Pie Face, but Janet's Pies caught our eye because it looked a bit more local and independent. We tried the curry lentil pie, which hit the spot as a quick, quasi-healthy, tasty snack for two (which surprised me because it was vegan). As we sat eating and chilling on the comfy couch overlooking King Street, one of the workers came up to us and informed me that she believed something had gone wrong with my credit card transaction (I think it was because I had told my credit card company that I'd be returning to the U.S. that day, and they had already begun to block my international usage of it). She handled it perfectly nicely, explaining she is the one to go over all the receipts at the end of the day and just so happened to pass by the register when she spotted the second printout stating that the card had been declined. As we paid for the pie with another card, I asked the woman if she was Janet herself. She was! Just a little story to show her great customer service in addition to serving yummy pies. Absolutely loved the mince beef pie. SOOOO good. Probably the best meat pie I've had in Australia yet. That said four stars because I also had the Tandoori Chicken pie and it was dry and I didn't love it. Nice overall spot though with quick service, tons of creative pie flavors, and great pie dough. I'm not normally much of a pie eater, but I was told that I simply had to taste a pie from Janet's Pies in Newtown; a local tradition, delicacy and treat. The exterior of the shop is characteristically colourful for Newtown, and inside there were an impressive number of pie munchers. The atmosphere is very relaxed: sofas, low coffee tables, bar stools and plenty of newspapers. Of course, there were an enormous variety of pies to choose from - Janet definitely has something for everyone. I was impressed/intrigued to see a vegan menu too (what on earth would a vegan pie consist of?!) The answer is Thai brocolli and potato pie, a Middle Eastern roll or a Vegetable Curry pie, all of which can be washed down with a soy milk latte. Every month there's a new special pie flavour, which, if it proves very popular, can become a permanent fixture on the pie menu. Choose from fillings that range from the traditional beef or lamb to the more adventurous pasta bolognaise or beef, bacon and cheese. The pies are warm, filling and very delicious. However, it's not just the delicious pies and casual atmosphere that have made Janet's Pies the popular restaurant it is. Oh, Janet. Magic must flow freely from your fingertips. Despite my general distaste for pies, I think yours are the only one's I'd ever eat. You've perfected the flakey crust/steamy filling ratio in a way that other pie makers wish they could. Janet's is a really small pie shop in Newtown that is renown for, obviously, it pies. The façade of the shop is covered in bright purple colors, embellished with purple hearts. The couches inside are even purple! As the 'made for Newtown' sign suggests, you can only get Janet's pies here on King Street, though you are able to get pies frozen, allowing you to take these home these parcels of heaven. All the pies I've had here have been great. The thing that makes Janet's stand out is that none of the pies are overly salty, as they have been at many other stores. read more

One of the amazing food I try in the bakery is Pie. It taste so good, especially the one with mushrooms and gravy.

It's a pie shop. If you want fine dining or haute cuisine, and you're turning up here, then the issue is with you, not the shop. The ladies here are a joy in their customer service, always with a smile and a (appropriately timed) chat. The food is spot on for what it is. The pies tasty and the sausage rolls flavor some and with just the right spice. Eat them with a knife and fork or with your hands, eat in or take away, who cares. Hot, hearty, reliable. Closes too early on a Friday/ Saturday night and you end up going to Oporto. Not the best value cheap eats in town, but unless you want to defrost the freezer pack you bought from Woolies at 1am in the morning this is the best place to grab a pie. Top it off with great service from Janet and her wonderful crew, and a relaxed comfortable ambience that is one of the best places to watch the crowds drift through Newtown. I almost forgot. Oh what better way to meet Janet than on a boozey stumble down King Street on none other than Australia Day! After dancing my pants off - wait, did I have pants on at that point? - to the likes of Disclosure and The Presets and then shimmying silly to thrift shop in my Vinnies sunnies, I was starving.... As a Newtown local, never before had I bat an eyelash at Janet's Pies, as the purple people eater ambiance of her sign always turned me off, but on this day of all days, the $5 vegan lentil and curry pie seemed like it could do no harm. And my, did I latch onto it! (Disclosure reference, anyone?) In the late evening, this VEGAN pie UNDER $5 managed to be flaky, hot, fresh and surprisingly flavour infused! No, this is definitely not the palace I'd go for lunch, but absolutely would I allow my tendency to ignore time and force me to grab something on-the-go, and ever bigger tendency to have a late night, lead me here again. The staff are friendly. The food is high quality. And I'm yet to find a pie shop with as many veg and vegan options as Janet! I actually got to meet Janet, from Janet's Pies. What a dynamic young entrepreneur as well I must say. She was this totally groovy chick and now I can understand how an idea as simple as a pie shop could be so effective. The shop has a stand out purple sign with a cool bright purple couch that you can sit on to enjoy a pie on your way past. The pies have been created for even vegans and vegetarians to enjoy with flavours such as Thai brocoli and potatoe. The pastry is puff on top and short crust on the bottom and that would be why these pies are scrumptious. They are made fresh on the premises and this shop is open till 3am on weekends. So whilst you are staggering out of a King Street pub you can stumble on over to Janet's for a pie. read more

They make a really good pie, and they bake in-store by the look of it. This café is a bit of a glorified bakery with less to choose from, but they are pie experts, rather than anything else. And the pies they do prepare are really good, and the staff are very friendly. It's really relaxed space on a busy street, with tables and chairs but also a couch and coffee table should you prefer. A pretty cool place to have a pie or sausage roll, but as I said, the menu is fairly basic beyond that. As for price, Janets pies isn't exactly the cheapest, with pie prices ranging from $4 to $6, but you pay the bit extra for a pie with more love, and lets face it, a pie with love can be hard to find. Seems like one of those cafés where'd you get to know your baristas name as you become a regular there. There's a vegan menu too, if that's what you're after! And Janet's pies are open late for that kind of crowd. read more

Janet's pie range is generally what you would expect from a gourmet pie shop, the pies are fresh, hot and delicious. She also has really yummy donuts with an overload of icing and milks shakes. Having always walked past this pie shop in Newtown and having tried the Pie Tin and the pies at Newtown Bakery, I was interested to see what this shop was like. I ordered the potato pie and decided to eat in. Like most places Janet's pies also charge 20 cents for those little sauce packets and ordered two, that's the minimum amount I need to adequately drown my pie. The pie had a firm crust that held in the beef mince, although the potato was a little crusty at the top and cheesy too. Overall I'd say the pies here were good, try and be quick to grab a seat on the couch. read more

Who is Janet and what does she do to make her bakery goods just so darn delicious? I'd like to meet her and shake her hand. Though I should probably wipe these crumbs off first... I love this woman for keeping her shop open so late that you can pop in after a night out on King Street and grab a pie, a sausage roll, a slice of banana bread - or the bottle of water you actually went in there for in the first place. The pies are amazing (event when sober) - I've actually witnessed friends buying three at once. They also just added an amazing new gem to the menu - the roast vegie pie. It's overloaded with fresh vegies (literally overloaded, it's the tallest pie I've ever seen!) and topped with Bechamel sauce capsicum. YUM. The staff they have on late at night are pretty accommodating and patient too; those poor fellas have to put up a lot with stumbling, stuttering drunkards.
