Probably the worst experience in car rentals in my life. Shuttling to the location was great, it's a wait so be prepared. I have the patience of an Ox, but this was trying my patience pretty well. Arriving at the location is just off the airport access and it's a building that handles at least a dozen other rental names that I've never seen before. I was still being optimistic until I walked in. Two couples in front of me did not look happy. There is a long counter with one person working the front. Long story short it was an hour and a half to get to the front to rent this vehicle. Listening to the folks before me I had all paperwork ready, but still had a bunch of forms to sign. I will say there was three other people walking in and out of this counter area but no extra help to check people in/out. My insurance covered everything fine. I was not aware of a $250 deposit hold on the rental. The $16.99 per day ezpass use. I will say if you are staying in the Ft. Lauderdale area, you will not need it. That fee was more than my rental fee. I was just happy to be out of there and on my way. The person outside with the vehicle was polite and professional. All the employees keep repeating they don't make to rules. None appear to be happy. This company is providing bad business. Would not recommend. 1 Star, would rate a 0 if I could. Avoid This Rental Company!! We rented a vehicle from this rental company in South Florida and had a terrible experience from start to finish. First, the storefront sign showed NextCar, but there are several rental companies in the building. & we rented from Huxton rental car. The rental cost was around $250, plus additional daily charges for insurance and toll pass coverage. We were told that if we returned the vehicle early, we would only be charged for the time used and would be reimbursed accordingly -- however, none of this was clearly provided in writing. The car also came with the low tire pressure warning light already on, and we assumed it was weather-related or a sensor issue. Unfortunately, we ended up getting a flat tire after driving less than 100 miles. When we called the number listed on the contract for help, they offered zero assistance and told us the insurance "doesn't cover tires." They only offered options that involved us paying out-of-pocket, and they made it seem like our deposit would be used -- yet there was no clear written explanation of what the deposit covered. We also attempted to contact the owner/manager and were told they would not speak on the phone and would only communicate by text, which is completely unacceptable for a rental business when there's an urgent issue. To make matters worse, when we returned the vehicle, we were given no return receipt, no written confirmation, and no vehicle inspection paperwork. We simply handed the keys to someone at a shared rental building, and were provided nothing -- which is extremely concerning and not standard business practice. The worst experience I have ever encountered. I rented through a third-party (Expedia). The car and insurance was paid for, only had to pay taxes, which was around $28. First of all, it is an off site location that looks like a hole in the wall.. needless to say it's only big enough for around 5 ppl. They have a few other car rentals there as well. I opted to use the booth inside to finalize the rental.... But little did I know, I was in for a big surprise. What normally takes a few minutes at the rental location took over an hour+. They go through the whole rental process as if you were just starting to look for a car. Then they hit you with the whammy.... $5k deposit to secure the rental??? I've never heard that in my life... then once you finish cursing.. yes you'll be cursing.. then they try to break down to $2500 deposit. Absurd!!! Then finally they broke it down lessor if you agree to pay more for the rental, mind you I said mines was paid. Thinking about paying less for a car, don't bother, just go to enterprise, Alamo or some other trusted brands. These side businesses are not up to par. Btw, did I express the shuttle only holds a few people at a time (1 shuttle) and runs every 15-20 mins! Never Again! Everyone that came there was pissed, I even saw 1 lady stomped out crying. If I could this company a negative 10 stars, I would. This was the worst rental car experience I have ever had. I Booked the rental car as a package on booking.com. Prepaid! Arrived in Orlando and tried to call the phone number that was provided to contact the shuttle service because the rental place is not located at the airport. The number was not in service! None of the phone numbers for Nextcar were in service. I called Priceline and they were unable to contact them either. They reported to me, "their numbers seem to be out of service". For an HOUR we tried to call the Nextcar phone numbers and got the same message; "this number is not in service". The shuttle that was supposed to come every 15-30 minutes never showed up. Technically we were stranded at the airport. How can we rent the car if the shuttle doesn't arrive and the phone numbers for Nextcar don't work? I requested to cancel the reservation through Priceline because I was going to have to rent another car, but I couldn't get anyone from Priceline or Nextcar to really help me or refund my money. Finally after an hour and 15 minutes a shuttle for Nextcar arrived. It drove me and my family to a small car lot that looked like a junk yard. When we went inside the rental office, it was filthy! The ceiling tiles were falling and stained. The floor was disgusting and the whole place was just nasty. While we waited for our turn at the counter, we listened to the young man behind the counter force the gentleman in front of us to purchase additional insurance claiming it was mandatory in the state of Florida. Well that is untrue and that was all we needed to hear to know we did not want to do business with this company. There was only one gentleman working the counter - while four or five other people, who I assumed were also employees, just walked in and out of the establishment. So we waited 20 minutes for our turn and calmly explained our displeasure regarding the wait and out of service phone number etc. to the young man behind the counter. He then proceeded to tell me that the shuttle checked in at 4:11 and 5:22 so we could not have waited an hour and a half for a shuttle. What? Sir we waited over an hour! And the phone numbers for the company were completely out of service! He was nice/nasty when speaking to my husband and myself. When we asked if there was anything that could be done as far as cancellation or refund due to the poor service, he simply stated I just work the counter. You can cancel if you want. Call Priceline if you want your money back. I can't help you other than that. We decided to cancel the reservation which he agreed to do and my family hopped back on the shuttle and went back to the airport to rent a car from a different rental company. Priceline informed me that I would have to go through a whole different process to get a refund for the car I prepaid for, but never rented. The whole point of pre-booking a rental car is to avoid hassle and streamline travel. This was the worst customer service I have ever encountered. Do NOT RENT FROM NEXTCAR. The very first thing the agent does is ask you to select the smiley face on a review panel. If you refuse, he simply says, "OK, then I don't have a car for you." They refuse to allow more than one person in the booth, likely to avoid having witnesses to their extremely rude behavior. They will also claim that you are late for your reservation--even if you arrived early but were forced to wait nearly two hours in line to reach the booth. Everyone ahead of us experienced the same situation and came out visibly angry. I find it very hard to believe that the positive reviews are genuine. Avoid this place at all costs. Lauderdale, you stand in line for a phone booth with a monitor in it that connects to a remote agent, takes you on a scripted scam process that has you waiting forever to verify your insurance before trying to force you to pay fees to use your full coverage insurance that almost triples the total cost on your reservation. Every customer that goes in the booth ends up waiting forever then arguing over all of the fees, then leaving without a car after declining to be bullied by the scam artists. First, the address is 2660 SW 26th St, when at the airport the shuttles for this location run every 10-15 minutes which may cause you - like me - to want an UbER. Upon arrival, you realize it's one location operating under multiple car rentals with the same employees, there is no organization, and you, as the customer, are left to figure out where you should be as everyone is just standing around gathered in a crowd. The wait is extensive as customer after customer debates with the associate of misinformation they were given when reserving the rental. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was left disgruntled with price hikes/changes upon arrival. The most egregious issue by far as the seemingly discriminatory price gouging of the deposit based on what appeared to be race. While almost everyone left unsatisfied, Hispanics and especially Blacks deposits exceeded $1000. Those of European decent were given deposits of $100-$300 in our face. One was for a minivan. The service also seemed a bit more professional. On the phone we were told $300. We agreed and reserved rental only to be told at the counter the deposit is $1000. We were then told IF we paid an additional $250 then our deposit would be brought down to $300. Scamming at its finest, we refused and were told we could not get our money back from the reservation. There were long lines and you were directed to a booth to speak to someone on a screen presumably overseas. There was only someone at the desk to hand keys. I wasn't feeling well and was becoming inpatient and noticed the people in the booths started screaming at the attendants, one came out and said "this place is a total scam....they are fishing for information and trying to upsell after agreed upon price. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERE! We had the worst experience ever during our recent rental . We booked through Travelocity and assumed it would be a legitimate company... it is not! We arrived tired on a redeye at 6am and had to wait nearly 40 minutes for a shuttle van to arrive to take us to their off site location, during this time we were harassed by a local crackhead looking for money.. not off to a good start. When we finally arrived at NextCar there were no agents, only telephone like booths where we were in a virtual zoom chat with an agent outside of the US who was hard to understand and the call kept dropping. We were then informed that our rental was going to be 5 times more than what we had already prepaid through Travelocity and were forced to leave a $250 security deposit despite providing every page of our auto insurance declaration per their request. We should have walked out but we were tired and at that point just wanted to get to our destination. When a car was brought around for us it was in poor shape and had completely bald tires which is super dangerous in rainy South Florida, the representative balked but we insisted on a safer car. We were then given a 2 year old Hyundai Elantra that was in rough shape, tires also bad, locks broken and exterior full of scratches, dents and dings. We at this point just took the car because again we were exhausted at this point and it was nearly 4 hours since we landed, every one else we saw there was also in shock and couldn't believe this sort of experience could happen in a first world country, this was a third world experience at best. I can't believe they are still in business to be honest. Do yourself a favor and cancel your booking ahead of time and save yourself the grief and expense. If I could give zero stars I would. They charged my credit card and on video said it was a hold. I returned the car on November 2nd and they still have not reversed the charge, credited me. You have to wait 30 to 45 minutes for a bus to take you to a location that you get into a nonventilated booth with a virtual assistant. The virtual assistant proceeds to up charge you even though you have personal insurance and prepaid for the rental and purchased extra insurance from expedia. You can only speak to AI attendant to revolve issue. They will not give names of management nor names of owners and or LLC. The SUV was very dirty inside and out. It had many dings and dents we have photos. They upchanged several hundred of dollars. Plus on the way back to the airport they did the same to other couples. I have rented from Avis. HERTZ, Enterprise for 40 years never had this issue. You can not get a live person on a phone call. I wanted my $350.00 credited to my account immediately. It looks like there are many reviews like this. From my research next steps, BBB, and other county and state agencies. The booth you speak to a virtual assistant does not have air. To get a car you are in this booth 30 minutes to an hour. If you have Asthma you have to step out. This was inhumane. It was total senior abuse. In November of 2025, my family rented a mid-size SUV from a company called NextCar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is my understanding that NextCar is one of several brands owned or managed by an umbrella organization called Stride. While I have reason to believe that renting from other Stride brands would result in a similar experience, my specific situation involved exclusively NextCar. First, let me acknowledge that the car itself was fine. It was not the vehicle I reserved, but it was in the same class, clean, and in decent condition. The process of obtaining the car, however, was a nightmare that nearly ruined the first days of my family vacation. Worse yet, I saw multiple families around me experiencing the same frustration, visibly upset and defeated after a long day of travel. The problems were serious, and there were many of them. 1) Location of the Rental Office In Fort Lauderdale, the rental agencies under Stride operate several miles from the airport. Getting there requires two separate shuttles and some walking. The instructions are unclear, and they certainly fail to communicate how long the trip actually takes. Honestly, the better advice would have been to simply take an Uber. Even worse, Stride agencies operate at two different off-airport locations. Our shuttle made two stops--first at Mex, then at NextCar. Families dropped at the Mex office soon discovered that it was closed, forcing them to be rerouted to the next location, where we were already waiting. This is an unacceptable and irresponsible organization! 2) Rental Office System Inside the office, a crowd of frustrated travelers was already waiting. I initially thought I got lucky because one clerk at the counter was free. Not so. The clerks at the counter do nothing related to the rental process. Instead, every customer is funneled into one of two oversized phone booths to speak with a remote agent via videophone. Efficient? Absolutely not. There are only two booths, so when the line grows, nothing can be done to accelerate the process. Each booth session takes at least 30-40 minutes on average. And based on what I saw, only about half of the customers even walk away with a car. The rest storm out--rightfully furious--and head to a reputable agency instead. The system exists solely to save the agency money, with zero consideration for customer experience. 3) Conversation With the Remote Agent The videophone conversation itself is painfully slow. The agent works remotely and shows no urgency whatsoever. His software was slow (he mentioned it repeatedly), he was slow, and this experience was consistent across all booths and all customers. Why would he hurry? He cannot hear the frustrated crowd outside or see the mounting line. Whether the office is empty or overflowing, the agent has no idea--and clearly no incentive to care. The questions and steps feel endless. After years of renting from Budget, Dollar, Alamo, and others--companies that complete the entire process in minutes--it is baffling that NextCar and its affiliates choose to operate this way. And then comes the security deposit: on a $500 rental, they demanded $2,500. Utterly unacceptable. I watched at least two families react with shock and demand a manager, but of course, no manager was present. Upon declining their insurance coverage, the agent demanded a copy of the declaration page from my auto insurance. Thankfully, I happened to have it on my AAA app. Many travelers will not, and will be punished for it. Outrageous. After the exhausting ordeal, the agent flashed tiny, blurry contract text on screen and asked me to initial ten separate points rapidly. By that time, I was too tired to read anything even if I tried. Roughly 30-40 minutes after entering the booth--and more than 90 minutes after arriving at the office--I finally received my car, only because I reluctantly accepted the absurd $2,500 security deposit. Around me, people were openly expressing frustration as their vacations unraveled before my eyes. This was, without question, the worst rental experience I have ever had. I will warn others to avoid NextCar, Mex, and any company associated with Stride. Finally, now that my rental has ended, I expect the immediate return of my security deposit--without any waiting period and without further delays. That is the very least your company can do after such a shameful, disorganized, and needlessly burdensome experience. AND FOR THE LAST BIT This review was initially written as a response to the survey received from Stride. Upon submitting the survey the response was...: "An error occurred while getting survey". We were riding down to Key West for the weekend. The agent offered us a different car for $35 more a day. We ended up taking that one. When we returned the car, the agent knowing good and well who we were said "Oh, you look like some guy that was in here the other night giving me a hard time." We had to get the girl from the parking lot to tell him that there was no damage to the car. When we asked him about releasing the $2500 hold on our credit card, he said "did you write the review yet." He was basically holding us hostage until we wrote a good review. We told him that we wanted that hold off immediately (which is what he said originally) and now he says that it will take three days for it to be released. We will never used that company again. DO NOT USE THIS RENTAL CAR COMPANY FOR HIDDEN FEES & TERRIBLE SERVICE! I paid $156 to rent this car through Expedia, after I left with the car and over an hour waiting, the final cost was over $400 for three days rental, NOT including the $250 deposit they have still not paid back!!! I rented with them recently on Expedia who gave them a good rating for an unknown reason - when I arrived, you do not deal with any humans - i had to climb into a hot telephone box and do everything via a zoom call over a screen with a person somewhere else. They had me sign several different contracts, and go through many different agreements and basically refused to use my insurance I had already purchased with Expedia, then literally forced me to pay 20 dollar per day of the rental to cover the toll roads, otherwise they would charge me $25 on top of the toll fee for every one i used - DISGUSTING BUSINESS. Then when I had to pay over $250 IN EXTRA HIDDEN FEES, an HOUR after arriving, NONE of their technology worked - the payment machines didnt work and i had to swap booths and then a human finally turned up to plug them in properly. Disgusting hidden fees, scam artists, AWFUL customer service. Just the worst. And I havent had a bill yet for the deposit to be taken off my credit card so lets see if theres even more fees to come. If I could give it 0 Stars, I would. From the beginning, to pick up the car we were talking to someone virtually in a little box. Lost connection several times in the process and had to restart every single time (we were there for over an hour to trying to pick up the car). I dont know why a company thinks its okay to have their paying customers wait that long and speak to people that dont know what theyre doing. They dont take canadian car insurance and this is not stated anywhere when we were processing the payment online prior to our trip. The car has spiders and ants crawling eveywhere, very gross. Never picking this company every again for future car bookings. I recommend not booking through this company unless you want to pay 3x the price that they show online and get stuck with an insect infested car :) read more

0 Stars if possible. STAY AWAY from Next & Sonic car rentals, or what ever fake name these scammers may be using this week. We booked through priceline.com/ rentalcars.com. and partially pre-paid. Upon arrival they claimed that they could not see our prepayment in their system, and then the scams started! They requested to see my proof of insurance that I planned on using (which I had already called to confirm would be ok). After reading it carefully, they then claimed that it was not good enough & that I would have to pay an additional $1,200 for better liability. LOL Total scam, no matter how much you prepare, they will not honor your rental and try to hit you up for more money. Only thing that give me peace is knowing that KARMA exists, these people have wrecked so many people's vacations........ read more
