I was told I needed a Marriage Certificate (had one that was issued by Justice of the Peace). That was not sufficient for the DMV Associate. She stated it had to be from the state we were married. She asked her supervisor if what we had was sufficient. We were told it wasn't. We have been married over 40 years and had a pile of documents that showed our names etc. Have lived in two other states and never experienced being told a few times that we needed other documents. Extreme waste of time. Recommend bringing every personal document that you have to avoid being turned away. It's not like going to the DMV is a good experience- going back again seems like torture!

This is a review of the overall DMV system in NH. I am from…read moreNH, but have lived in other states, and even had a Canadian drivers license. The DMV system/phone system in this state is in need of improvement. This is not my first set of issues with this Department. When I moved home from Canada many years ago, I returned to the DMV to get my NH license again. My permanent license never showed up after the temporary was expired. I was on hold on the phone service for like an hour for 3 different attempts before my permanent license was mailed to me. They were not concerned about fraud after sending out supposedly 2 ID's that did not get to me. This was 15 years ago. I had been living out of state for the last 6 years, and need to renew my license, boy with Covid it was extra difficult. I was on hold a couple times trying to get an appointment. The first time I gave up after 30 min, the second time my call dropped about 45 min in. Then I finally got through after over an hour, just to get a question answered, and to make an appointment to get my license, Even when they had before times walk in hours, there was always long long waits, and if any documents needed fixing, you would have to come back and get in line all over again. On the phone when I finally got a woman she was kinda curt, going over what I needed to get the real ID. I am sure it is frustrating working for the DMV. On a positive note after dealing with the ordeal of getting an appointment, the experience at the Keene DMV was the least painful, and most friendly experience I have had dealing with the DMV system in NH. The problem with the phone system is chronic, and now that all these out of staters bought up property I am sure the system is super bound up. You would think with inflation and all this extra tax revenue that they would address staffing issues. It also really becomes classist when it takes an hour to get a staff on the phone to assist with legal documents(you need to work, or drive), if you are a normal office hours worker you almost have to take a day off just to be on hold to get the appointment, then another day off to go to the appointment. Why not just have a website for people that are already in the system(to simplify the amount of people needing to speak with someone), they can just make an appointment, without waiting on hold, for an unreasonable amount of time. Or the state could just hire a few more phone operators, and have a functional system. I did not experience these problems getting my license in British Columbia, or Colorado. I really with government would try to be more user friendly with the people it says it serves.

This DMV distorts biometrics on the Real ID photographs. My husband has a short beard and a very…read morelong face. He has asked 3 times to have his entire face in the photo, but they insisted each time on inventing the face they think he should have. He told them that his chin is being cut off, and they told him that he didn't know what part of his face was beard and what part was flesh and bone. He has shaved his beard so that the photographer doesn't insist that they know what he looks like underneath, but if they just took standard, regulation photographs, like those in the example page of TSA or Homeland Security or even like the example on the wall of their office, from the clavicles up, ears and all, then they wouldn't have to invent the biometrics of a person. They wouldn't have to just make it up. My husband would have been able to keep his beard, which he liked. He has to travel further to find a trustworthy person to take a standard photograph, and so do I. The people at this DMV cite a nebulous, unknowable "They" when telling you that you can't have your entire face in a photograph, saying, "This is how They want it done," but no one wants it like this. The ID was rejected by the French Consulate, and still the person working at this DMV would not correct their mistake. His chin is cut out of the photo. His ears are clipped. If you never travel, maybe this will be fine for you, but in every other State in the Union and in the countries abroad, the ID created here is completely useless garbage. Decide what you want in your life before getting an ID done here, because what they will give you will limit your freedom. *edit to add: Went to the DMV in Epping, and they all gave lip service about how the photo is incorrect, but that they had called Concord, and "they were just cranking these out so fast" that if you wanted a correct photo and a functional Real ID, you'd have to wait until you get the ID in the mail, then devote even more time plus pay $10 more for a replacement, in order to have it done correctly. Sounds scammy. Take the photo right the first time, and no one would have to pay more in time and money. In any case, you won't be going anywhere for a while. At least several months.

I filled out the paperwork, waited 50 mins, walked up to the counter, said hi and nothing else, the clerk was already mad, took my paperwork, barked at me asking if i was purchasing a MA ID (which my paperwork already confirmed). I said yes. She then barked at me to stand in front of the blue background to take the picture, as if I was supposed to have read her mind. She took the picture, confirmed I had a citation and reinstatement fee to pay if i wanted to renew my driver's license, and then called her boss to confirm everything. The clerk and her boss spoke to each other calmly while looking at the clerk's computer. Then her boss barked at me as soon as she looked at me, asking if i was paying cash or card. I said cash. I paid for the MA ID. Then I asked if i could pay the other fees online because the total balance was more than what the RMV website said the previous day, and so now I was short on cash. The clerk said no (to which I later found was not true. You can pay online), then I said I just want my paper temporary ID right now so i can leave. The clerk handed it to me, and then i left. I left feeling way worse than when i arrived. Rude clerk and boss, AND misinformation given to me by her regarding how to make payments. 0 for 2. Doesn't get worse than that. Can we get some better public service please? More competence and accountability please?!? Just seems like a free for all over there the way the staff behave. They choose to be kind if they want to, but there's no consequences if they choose not to. And it's by and large the female staff that have horrible attitudes, AND THAT IS PLAIN WRONG. There comes a time in every young man's life when he embarks upon the seemingly elongated journey…read moretoward becoming a legally licensed driver. Today would have marked the conclusion of such for my son. Alas, they don't usually schedule the road test the same day as the computer exam. Ya know, up front - that's my only main complaint about NH's DMV (so far). Apparently, they're so short staffed or whatever...that they can't do as most states have and still do - road test same day, so long as the driver passes their general knowledge test. Pedantic lamenting aside, however, this place is....efficient enough. I mean, this isn't even remotely the first time I've been here. Come to think of it, I found it peculiar I had somehow never written a review for the NH DMV till now. Huh! So anyways, I actually first visited this place 3 years ago when I applied for my own state license. First thing of note is they do not print licenses here. They send away for the actual final copy which takes anywhere between 5 to 8 weeks to receive. Pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. It's 2024, yet we still can't find a more efficient way to quickly distribute licenses. Considering how much paperwork is required to even apply for one of these things, you'd think the distribution process would be stellar. I've met pigeons who deliver mail faster. *sigh* But, I digress. How would I improve this facility? Allow applicants to schedule both their general knowledge and road test for the same day ahead of time. Making folks inexorably visit this place TWICE just to complete a licensing process for a new driver makes NO sense! They even take the kid's photo for the license immediately after passing the knowledge test. At that point, they're like....75% of the way complete towards being a fully fledged licensed driver anyway. Do these people hate the O-Zone layer or something?! On some positive notes, the facility itself is well organized, clean, accessible, and easy enough to get to. I only wish licensing didn't take the length of time it takes for Mercury to orbit the sun. It's solely for that reason....that I must give the DMV of Nashua 3 eager teens impatiently awaiting receipt of their driver's license out of 5.

This was before I could get a number and sit down, even though there were plenty of chairs. Every other DMV office I have ever visited has given you a number upon arrival; you didn't have to wait in line to get one. It takes over a month to get an appointment, and that wasn't an option for me because I had lost my license. All five stations had vision testers, but only one station did vision tests. You had to undergo a vision test before you could get a number and take a seat. I am a senior and was uncomfortable standing for such a long time. Additionally, I couldn't read my book, and I was growing increasingly angry. Everyone else in line was angry, too. And it was unnecessary because the other four people could have done the vision tests when they were taking your money and photographing you. The manager should be fired.
