This place is an institution and rocks. Old school oval counter seating and girl is sort of boiling the burgers in the middle. Plenty of staff walking in circles asking if you need anything. They inform you the burgers are 2 Oz and encourage you to get a double. There are no fries, only chips, shakes and burgers here. I had a double cheeseburger and chocolate shake and it was really good. Spouse ordered 3 double burgers. They also make their buns by scratch. They are busy, and super friendly. A unique way to fry and boil burgers. Oh and they are fresh and not frozen. read more

Quick service though forgot one cheeseburger and employee touched the top burger with his hands to count below. Missing cheeseburger was quickly corrected. Cheeseburger with only onions was great, would like to see a sauté to onions though they were somewhat softened. Other cheeseburgers were plainer and well received by adults young kids. Pie was great, not best but worth $3. read more

I came in from our of town and heard the burgers were excellent so I thought I would try them. I get in there and get ready to place my order and food was all over the counter. Placed my order and ended up with a small burger the size of a smashed meatball. It really tasted nasty, nothing to brag about. An overpriced mediocre flat meatball. I was really disappointed because the place is not what they say at all. I could have gotten a better burger at McDonald's. Tables were dirty floors had food droppings all over and the employees were dirty. Health department needs to go in there and clean it up read more

Whenever I'm in Brookings, Nick's is a "must go to spot" The meat is fresh, not frozen, the buns are homemade and the milkshakes are fantastic. The vibe in this burger joint is friendly, local and the service whenever I've been there is spot on. It is relatively small with seating only at the counter so one needs to be strategic in when to go, but worth the wait. I'm sure the burgers taste just as good if you get them to go, but sitting at the counter with waxed paper as a plate makes these juicy burgers extra tasty. read more

Nick's is reminiscent of White Castle and Cozy Inn in Salina, Kansas (without the overpowering smell of grilled onion) but different in its own way too. We stopped in on a Friday afternoon and the horseshoe-shaped counter was nearly full and a dozen or so other patrons were standing, waiting for their food. Our order was taken promptly and graciously and then the wait began. I didn't check the time, but I'm certain it was at least 20 minutes before we received our bag of little burgers. Nick's sliders are more like a little burger you'd fry at home and the meat was much different than a steamed White Castle or an onion-smelling Cozy Inn burger, although the buns seem about the same. They were tasty. We spent 21 bucks for five cheeseburgers, two bags of chips and two soft drinks. A bit on the spendy side. Friendly service and tasty little burgers, but the long wait and price brought Nick's down to 3 stars. Still, it's a South Dakota icon, so if you're in Brookings, you should experience it at least once. read more

Ohhh, every time we drive past Brookings, South Dakota on the way to the lake, stopping in at Nick's is a MUST! Their burgers (more like sliders) are to die for. You buy 'em by the bag full! I get 3 with all of the toppings and they literally melt-in-your-mouth! We also love their shakes and this last visit, we ordered a chocolate cherry shake. YUM! The only downside is that they don't serve fries but they do have bags of potato chips! You gotta love the simplicity of their business model. It really is an incredible spot. Can't wait for our trip to the lake next summer so that we can get our Nick's fix again. *During Covid-19 they're operating out of a pick-up window so I recommend calling ahead to place your order! When I visited for lunch, Nick's was bustling with business, and despite having so many people to take care of, the staff were friendly and efficient in getting us our food. Burgers were small but good, and reasonably priced. Milkshake reminded me of Dairy Queen and was so thick I needed a spoon. The homemade pie was tasty too. You're not going to find anything like this anywhere else, so if you're visiting Brookings, put this on your list. read more

Nick's burgers are small in size, but packed with flavor. Each burger is made to order, I watched them with my own eyes as the grill is in the middle of the restaurant and the outer U-shaped circle is the seating area. All the patties are soft and juicy. The cheese melts nicely on top. Nick's must be doing something right since they've been around since 1929! Two cheeseburgers were the perfect amount for lunch. I came right when they opened during the weekdays, no wait. Friendly service with a smile, I'd eat here again in a heartbeat! read more

I have heard the praises of this iconic hamburger shop for years. I finally had the privilege to try the tasty little burgers! The menu is simple and concise, no fuss. Burger, Double Burger, or cheeseburgers. The burgers are cooked right in front of you and felt like old fashioned prices. The mustard relish is the secret recipe to make it the best burger ever. Warning, the burgers are smaller than some are used to but perfect for me as I am a light eater. Old Dutch Chips as a side and ice cream for dessert. They have great parking and even have a walk-up window with a patio. Nicks also sells merch like hats and shirts which is always a nice touch. read more

This mostly gets a four-star rating because if you are in Brookings you should be stopping by one of the places we are best known for. Pull up to the counter and order yourself a bag of burgers (they are small so you need more than 2!) and a malt and enjoy a nostalgic trip back in time. read more

Was told by several people we had to go here if in Brookings. Well, burgers are very small for the price and the patties were VERY under seasoned, like absolutely no seasoning. Toppings were barely present. The shakes tasted good and were probably the best deal of what we ordered, but they were more like a 16 oz cup of ice cream rather than a shake. No way a straw could be put to use! I would have walked away still hungry if not for the shake order, but I wasn't really looking to fill up on ice cream when I went to a burger shop. read more

The service was quick but the portion sizes were for maybe a preschool or elementary school kid. They have no fries on the menu and all the drinks are tiny. I also had a sundae and that was like maybe in an 8 Oz glass. What's up with that?! Furthermore, people were filing in like it was amazing or something. The flavor was pretty good but honestly, save your money. For a single patty, its $2 and $3.65 for a double. I'm from sioux falls. Maybe that's why I'm just not very impressed. I liked the design of the shop. It was like an old American diner but the novelty wore off when we got the check. Our server/cashier was very nice though. It's just a shame they can't up the portions for the money you pay to actually get halfway full. I would like to note I picked up a full sized salad on the way out of town. Maybe they were skimping on ingredients today because it was the sidewalk arts festival but youd think they'd want you to go back home to rave about. Move along. Nothing special. read more

Established in 1929.

Started in 1929, Nick's has expanded over the years and kept true to the original owners recipes and style of cooking. Back in 1929 you could get a slider for five cent. The price of burger has gone up over time, but Nick's remains a big hit with the Brookings community. In 2008 We expanded the interior and add a catering service to the business. Owners Todd and Troy Fergen took over in 2014.

We started off with a South Dakota specialty, Chislic. I asked our server if it was more authentic grilled or fried, and she said grilled. They were really good! My husband had the Bourbon Bacon Burger with garlic fries. He really enjoyed it. I snagged a fry and it was tasty, with bold garlic. I had the pork tacos. These were not small street tacos, but very filling full-size tacos. A bit messy, but our server left us plenty of napkins. When she came by to ask if we needed anything more, we asked for the check. She said it'd be right out, and asked if we'd like free mini cupcakes as a thank you. She commented they'd been short staffed. I must say, everyone in there was working hard (the boss came by to check with us several times) and we have no complaints, only compliments. We then shared two mini cupcakes, one vanilla and one red velvet. It was a sweet ending to a really great meal.

What I didn't appreciate was that I was asked to pay for food that anybody would have raised an eyebrow at and treated like I was the problem. The cook even came out of the kitchen and tried to nonchalantly check out who I was. When I met her I she gave me a dirty look and marched back off into the kitchen. Not recommended. I won't ever go back. If they don't know enough to know that they're serving people bad food or have the professionalism to own up to it when they have, then I have no time for them.

Poor acoustics make the place very loud even if it's only 1/3 full. Food is fine they have a few…read morespecialty burgers. Typical bar food. Outside seating is small but cozy, you can watch folks go by on the bike trail.
