This place is an institution and rocks. Old school oval counter seating and girl is sort of boiling the burgers in the middle. Plenty of staff walking in circles asking if you need anything. They inform you the burgers are 2 Oz and encourage you to get a double. There are no fries, only chips, shakes and burgers here. I had a double cheeseburger and chocolate shake and it was really good. Spouse ordered 3 double burgers. They also make their buns by scratch. They are busy, and super friendly. I came in from our of town and heard the burgers were excellent so I thought I would try them. I get in there and get ready to place my order and food was all over the counter. Placed my order and ended up with a small burger the size of a smashed meatball. It really tasted nasty, nothing to brag about. An overpriced mediocre flat meatball. I was really disappointed because the place is not what they say at all. I could have gotten a better burger at McDonald's. Whenever I'm in Brookings, Nick's is a "must go to spot" The meat is fresh, not frozen, the buns are homemade and the milkshakes are fantastic. The vibe in this burger joint is friendly, local and the service whenever I've been there is spot on. It is relatively small with seating only at the counter so one needs to be strategic in when to go, but worth the wait. I'm sure the burgers taste just as good if you get them to go, but sitting at the counter with waxed paper as a plate makes these juicy burgers extra tasty. read more

Nick's is reminiscent of White Castle and Cozy Inn in Salina, Kansas (without the overpowering smell of grilled onion) but different in its own way too. We stopped in on a Friday afternoon and the horseshoe-shaped counter was nearly full and a dozen or so other patrons were standing, waiting for their food. Our order was taken promptly and graciously and then the wait began. I didn't check the time, but I'm certain it was at least 20 minutes before we received our bag of little burgers. Nick's sliders are more like a little burger you'd fry at home and the meat was much different than a steamed White Castle or an onion-smelling Cozy Inn burger, although the buns seem about the same. They were tasty. We spent 21 bucks for five cheeseburgers, two bags of chips and two soft drinks. A bit on the spendy side. Friendly service and tasty little burgers, but the long wait and price brought Nick's down to 3 stars. Still, it's a South Dakota icon, so if you're in Brookings, you should experience it at least once. read more

Ohhh, every time we drive past Brookings, South Dakota on the way to the lake, stopping in at Nick's is a MUST! Their burgers (more like sliders) are to die for. You buy 'em by the bag full! I get 3 with all of the toppings and they literally melt-in-your-mouth! We also love their shakes and this last visit, we ordered a chocolate cherry shake. YUM! The only downside is that they don't serve fries but they do have bags of potato chips! You gotta love the simplicity of their business model. It really is an incredible spot. Can't wait for our trip to the lake next summer so that we can get our Nick's fix again. *During Covid-19 they're operating out of a pick-up window so I recommend calling ahead to place your order! Each burger is made to order, I watched them with my own eyes as the grill is in the middle of the restaurant and the outer U-shaped circle is the seating area. All the patties are soft and juicy. What a classic americano hamburger shop! By far the best Brookings has to offer. Simple menu, friendly staff and amazing burgers.

The service was quick but the portion sizes were for maybe a preschool or elementary school kid. They have no fries on the menu and all the drinks are tiny. I also had a sundae and that was like maybe in an 8 Oz glass. What's up with that?! Furthermore, people were filing in like it was amazing or something. The flavor was pretty good but honestly, save your money. For a single patty, its $2 and $3.65 for a double. I'm from sioux falls. Maybe that's why I'm just not very impressed. I liked the design of the shop. It was like an old American diner but the novelty wore off when we got the check. Our server/cashier was very nice though. It's just a shame they can't up the portions for the money you pay to actually get halfway full. I would like to note I picked up a full sized salad on the way out of town.
