Disclaimer: the only thing I could eat there were the hamburger patties, so my choices were severely limited. Do not come here if you're vegetarian or diabetic. Otherwise, it's nostalgia at its finest. Sliders are $2 each, a little pricey if you ask me. No tomatoes or lettuce. No fries. The meat is quite tasty, the service was friendly, and I guess spending on dishes is minimal as you are served on a sheet of tissue-y wax paper. What the hell. It's worth a visit. read more

At the risk of committing South Dakotan sacrilege, I must admit I was underwhelmed. While a local favorite, Nick's just didn't wow, or even charm me. The crowd was fun, the service was terrible, and the burgers were meh. This all being said, the U-shaped bar creates for a fun atmosphere where you're surrounded by others and all looking at the frying hamburgers. Cooked in grease, the burgers were actually pretty good, though also pretty devoid of flavor. While called burgers, sliders is a much better term for these. I ordered a total of four, which hit the spot, but cost way more than I expected. The burgers weren't bad, but definitely disappointing and way over priced. Nick's is one of those places where if it was 1955 and you had a flux capacitor, the Mr Fusion adapter, a DeLorean, and time traveled to today you could probably walk in and see very few changes. Sliders are still cooked on a flattop and loaded into small buns while customers still around a counter eating and talking. What you would notice is the cost. They serve hamburger sliders, chips, soda, shakes, and very good locally made desserts. You can ask for mustard, cheese, relish, onion, and pickles on your slider. Don't ask for mayo. You will get one of those "You are not from around here, are you?" looks. (guess how I know) The staff is friendly, prompt, courteous, and quick. People line up at Nick's like they are selling cheap tickets for a Rolling Stones concert. Seating is limited to about 20 stools around a "U" shaped diner bar. It is about $2 a slider. The sliders are ok, there are cheaper alternatives, but it is a good local place to go and try. read more

To get your fill, you'd need three or four, which puts you nearly to the price point of a far superior burger at The Pheasant. For as tiny as their little burgers are, they're kind of expensive. They are good though. Nick's doesn't have much of a selection. They have burgers and chips. They also usually have a fresh homemade pie or two, which are always delicious. Their establishment is newly remodeled and expanded. Seating is a throwback to a diner from the 60's where there are a bunch of stools surrounding the grill. So, If you don't mind sitting right next to someone you've never met and you enjoy the simplicity of menu choices being limited to hamburgers or cheeseburgers, you should stop by. Nick's is still the best, they make a better burger than anyplace in the Twin Cities and anyplace I've yet been in the whole U.S. They're so good I must admit that visiting relatives isn't the only reason I come to the Brookings area. Since my Grandma passed on a couple years ago they're one of the main reasons. On my recent visit I discovered they also expanded both they're dining area and hours. I like the later closing time, I'm a fan of anything that gives me more opportunities to come eat those delicious burgers. read more

I have heard this was the best place to get an authentic hamburger like your mom used to make. The burger was very tasty and the buns are fresh but I probably will never eat here again. Paying $2 for a 2 oz. patty which is before it is cooked is just not worth it. If it was at least 3 oz. I might consider it but basically I paid $2 for a bun with a tiny piece of meat on it. This place is so cute. The constant being checked on by 4 different employees got a little annoying, but I suppose that's better than never getting any service! Nick's is the definite local place for Brookings. Almost every hometown resident loves it to death, myself included, however, when people from out-of-town visit, they don't always seem to fall in love with it. Don't expect anything fancy. Nick's entire gimmick is actually quite the contrary. Your "plate" is just a strip of thin, paper-like, plastic. The burgers are made in grease, right in front of you. No fries, no onion rings, just potato chips. Burgers are overpriced for the size. You sit at a bar, making conversations in a group not as easy, and there's only one real meal on the menu, so why did I give this place a 5/5? Well, it's all because of the minor touches. Nick's has great people (most times), great homemade food, and a burger that just tastes great, but different. It's like a guilty-pleasure that, if you're from Brookings, don't feel guilty about at all. Nick's is a place, definitely worth visiting. Definitely a place to visit for its unique open kitchen and bar style seating. Watching the cook is always fun. The kitchen, seating and bar area was very clean. People will whine and cry about Nicks because they are so used to simulated McFakeBurgers and tripled sized mega portions of food like stuff for only $0.99 more. If that is what you're looking for then you should swing over to a drive thru window. But if you're looking for an eating experience with real food and loads of history, then this is the place for you. Heard this is THE burger place in Brookings. When we walked in I noticed burger patties sitting in oil on the grill. Unfortunately, that's what we served. How long were they on the burner that was turned on low? They see you walk in and then put the cooked burgers on the grill to warm them :( They were surprisingly good despite sitting in oil until we ordered. We didn't wait even five minutes for our burgers BUT I would much rather wait a few more minutes and have a less soggy burger. read more

Recently I had the pleasure of eating at Nick's hamburger shop. I was so happy about my experience there that I felt the need to share. Upon nearing this little shop, the smell in the air was so mouthwatering delicious, it was hard not to follow it inside. After entering, the smell was so overwhelmingly inviting, it was too late to turn around. The ordering menu keeps things simple, allowing them to take your order and deliver quicker. It's a simple burger with the option to add cheese or bacon, and a few basic toppings to include on your burger. The burgers are small so make sure you order more than one if you're hungry. Think whitecastle small. My only real complaint is that they only serve bags of chips as an added side. I wouldn't really complain about it though, I'm just horribly addicted to french fries. I was more than happy to have some chips with my burger though. I highly recommend a stop at Nick's Hamburger Shop if you're ever in the Brookings area. The service was fast and friendly. Despite how busy they started to get, everyone got their food in a timely manner, which was impressive to me since they were ordering bags of burgers. Worth visiting once if you are traveling through the area. However, their burgers are quite small and expensive. They are good, but they're far from the best I've ever had. On the plus side, the buns are fresh tasting and the burgers themselves are good, but not worth $2 each in my opinion.
