It's been awhile since I've been to Nick's. I always remember driving past it as a kid. Inside of the restaurant things are pretty standard. Greenish blue booths filled the landscape. Luckily on Fridays they are open until 9pm so I could sit & enjoy things. The giant slices are around $6. I settled for a slice of sausage & an italian beef (dipped of course.) The order came out to be around $19. The signs said free soda with any pizza slice, but they didn't give me one (it might be situation where if you don't ask then more money for them.) They got my order out in under five minutes. The pizza wasn't fresh which is what I expected since it was the end of the day, but it was warm. The pizza is solid, but doesn't really stand out. It's your typical pizza you'll find almost anywhere in Chicago. It was almost perfectly cooked & sliced which a uniformity that's rare. You can tell they've been doing this for a LONG time. The italian beef was disappointing. Everything was bland & there was barely any cheese. When you have he beef dipped, it's because you want that savory beef juice to light your tastebuds up. Instead the juice tasted like water that they used to thaw the beef out in (akin to hotdog water) which is sacrilegious. Where's the seasoning? There was plenty of sweet peppers though, but I suggest getting giardinera in-order to at least get some flavor going. Overall, Nick's pizza & beef is a middle of the road restaurant. It isn't bad, but it definitely isn't good either. Even the restaurant's decor doesn't do much to inspire you. It won't break the bank, but you do expect at least fries with a sandwich which they don't seem to do here. The food could also use some spice, but at least the staff is nice. read more

Well, they re-did the restaurant decor a month ago, made a few changes to the menu, but the food is still excellent. Service is fairly quick at the drive-up window, and actually pretty good if you call ahead. Try the pizza, and also the rib tips (good sauce!). Call ahead for the pizza, panzarotti, or rib tips unless you want to sit in the parking lot while they cook them! read more

An unexpected surprise.... I was in town for business, and placed an order for delivery to my hotel. It was a busy time of the day, and projected delivery time was about an hour. I ordered fried mushrooms and the rib tips dinner. It arrived earlier than forecasted. I began to open up my delivery bag, and found the food portions to be, should I say, very generous. The food was still hot, not lukewarm or cold. The rib tips were tender, and so delicious. The mushroom breading was still crispy, not soggy at all. While looking over the menu, I saw that they char- broil their Italian sausage. It made me nostalgic for Jimbo's in Des Plaines, it's been gone a long time, but was great. Back to the review, ordered a combo with giardiniera for later. Very disappointing, not only was there no giardiniera, but the sausage wasn't char-broiled. Very small homey feel to the place, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but considering how long they have been open I expected the food (& service) to be better. Walked in and wasn't even greeted, I got a calzone and my friend got wings & fries. The calzone wasn't cooked all the way through with the cheese in the center not melted and the wings weren't even tossed in sauce, it was just put on top like ketchup would be on fries. Everything looked and tasted like it came straight out of the freezer aisle of the grocery store except instead of paying freezer aisle grocery store prices you're paying restaurant prices. I use to love this place when they were on Bellwood Ave. The pizza is "good" (while it's hot) the price kept going up and the cuts kept getting smaller. You use to have the option if you wanted a pop but now their isn't an option which lets them nickel and dime you some more. Last time I was there while placing an order I got the impression I was wasting their time because I decided to ask about some products on their menu and what came on it. Want have to worry about that anymore. I live 4min away from here and typically drive 15min away from this location for a pizza. read more

I was championing this weak ass pizza the entire time I was eating it. I probably said something like "Damn. This pizza is the TRUTH, son". But you see, I wasn't in my right frame or mind. I seem to be drawn into these places that have "Pizza by the Slice" signs on the front window. I can't say that I'm too impressed with their pizza. You really have to screw up pizza for me not to like it. The crust and the cheese is ok. I don't recommend the meat lovers pizza. I don't know if it was the grease or need for a few extra minutes in the oven, but the crust was rather mushy. The slices are big and it does come with a soda, which is the best thing I can say about it. There is nothing original or standing out about their pizza and it's somewhat resembles the taste of frozen pizza. If you think Tombstone pizza is great, this might be the place for you? They do have a rather large menu and they do cater. read more

Bad Customer Service Experience My mom had just picked me up from the airport from a trip that I was very excited to tell her about, we got carried away in conversation and must have not heard our order called out. All I heard was a very loud "Hello!!!". We quickly got up to grab our order and this would've been the moment for the man to redeem himself, maybe kindly make a comment about how he couldn't get our attention, we're pretty down-to-earth & would've very well been okay with laughing it off, but instead he looks at the customer next to us, shaking his head as if we were THAT much of an inconvenience. So I asked if it was necessary for him to yell that way, TWICE I'd like to add, and he replied stating he had called us 5 times, when I reiterated that his attitude was no way to treat a paying customer, of which he replied "I'm not arguing with you" and just walked away. Most of the employees appeared to be Latinos, this man appeared to be African-American, it was very clear that he was miserable at his job, and he made sure that we too would have a miserable experience. The lasagna was delicious and yet I won't be back. I work in Customer Service and the treatment we offer to customers is very much a big part of the dining experience. Nice eating area and clear easy to read menu's. Sometimes places like this can overwhelm you with tons of handwritten menus and poor seating or an run down appearance. Nick's was a 4/5 in this area. I was in the mood for pizza and the slice + free drink was a draw. Nice selection of styles, deep dish, pan, thin. And if you were not in the mood for a slice, they also had calzones ready to go. They had a $3 off $15 so I decided to try some different items. Sausage Calzone - Not as warm as I would liked. Still it tasted good. 3/5 Deep dish peperoni (sauce on top). 3/5. Crust and amount of cheese was great but I didn't like the sauce as much. 1/2 cheeseburger. Good bun and assembly but the patties are pre-formed and look from frozen (you get 2 - 1/4lb patties). 4/5 hotdog and fries- Crinkle cut fries 5/5. The hot dog on the bun was a little dried out though. Definantly not the perfect steamed bun I look forward to in a Chicago style dog. 2/5 Overall, with coupon it was a really good value but the food averages a 3/5. Nick's is like another typical Chicago-style Italian Beef/Gyros/Fries type of quick eats restaurant like Portillo's has modeled themselves after and franchised. Another solid recommendation of the big fat guy I used to work with, Nick's is a great place to get an Italian Beef sammich or a Gyro. With a wide selection of things that are bad for you on the menu (like pizza puffs, broasted chicken, cheeseburgers), there's something for everyone here. The reason I remember Nick's so well is that it is where I one time went to pick up an extra-large and a very deep color of red fruit punch off of the table and the top wasn't on securely. I ended up squeezing too hard and spilling red fruit punch all over my white dress shirt and showing off to my coworkers my vast vocabulary of expletives! read more
