There was one time we came, and that was for some farewell drinks for a friend of mine, however, until recently, that was the only time I ever went there (though I may have popped in a couple of other times). I came back here again when I was back in Adelaide, simply to check it out again. I have to say that it's not bad, though it is pretty flashy. There is a really nice beer garden out the back, which is non-smoking to boot. However they only have the standard beers on tap, so it's not a place I would go back to all that often.

Got the steak - I asked for medium rare and the steak actually came out well done... Had the steak been cooked medium rare then I would have scored a 5 as the average score for my visits here as pretty much everything else I've eaten here has been lovely and even though the steak Wasn't cooked the way I like it, it was tasty and not tough or chewy at all... The pork, pizzas and pan fried chicken are yummy too... The wood oven pizzas are actually to die for. Nice pub with a nice outdoor area and the staff are friendly and welcoming which is great. During the week or during the day is probably the best time to go as on the weekend at night it can be really busy. We will be back again soon I would say!

Both me and the wife have been going to the Birkenhead tavern for years and have always enjoyed the…read moremeals. I normally get scotch fillet and used to get the sticky date pudding. When the lady who made the pudding retired and some tried to make it the same it was not even close so o stopped ordering it. Last night I went out with my wife and daughter and my scotch fillet tasted like it had been cooked then reheated. Very disappointed and I will be looking for another venue.

When I first discovered it while perfusing the internet I though that it's location on the inside bend of the Port River was actually a really good location - it seems that the owners thought that as well because it is actually a fairly classy pub. Mind you, you are looking across the river to the industrial part of Port Adelaide so the view actually isn't all that fantastic. Also, it is a bit further back from the river than I expected it to be, which means you have a pretty good view of some undeveloped land and a bunch of fishermen. Oh, a couple of the staff were pretty rude as well, and getting to this place, especially when you don't have a car, it a bit of nightmare. Still I do give it points for its location.

I think that this outdoor area will get very busy in the warmer months. Be sure to check out their pizza menu! They are having a lot of fun with it. I tried a Open Burrito pizza which had chilli con carne on it with rice, cheese and sour cream. Sounds unusual, but was really yummy! This is comfort food and goes way too well with a beer. The Alma is a lot bigger than what you think it is when you drive past. It is separated into a back formal dining area, main bar & restaurant in the middle and front, outside beer garden and upstairs function area. The atmosphere has changed dramatically and it is much more of a trendy inner city pub that your local suburban watering hole. Okay, it is not the cheapest place to go for a meal, but it has this really great atmosphere and it is certainly quite a relaxing place to enjoy a beer. In fact when I was doing some night course as the Bible college around the corner I would regularly stop here for a drink, and sometimes even drag my friends here afterwards for a bit of a night cap. We went here on a recommendation from a friend who lives out this way, desperate for Yiros but not wanting the hassle of going into town for it - and we found an absolutely gorgeous meal in the end. There are four tables inside - I'm guessing it's not a real big 'eat in' venue, but they were perfect for the four of us - the meat is so tender, and so full of flavour - we ended up with a couple of platters of chips smothered in meat and gravy, while the kids went with more traditional yiros wrapped in pita bread - the chips are crisp and golden, and fluffy inside, just the way hot chips should be. We were impressed enough we were back the next night - the owners recognised us and said we must have enjoyed the food, and we explained we were about 20 minutes drive away - guess we're now regulars there because they always have plates and cutlery for us when we come in :) So, yes - worth a trip even if you're a little further away. I'm sure all the other food is great, there's a range of burgers and hot dogs and fish, etc - it all looks wonderful when they're preparing it - but the yiros meat is sensational so we haven't tried anything else.

A look through the menu, and ah... steamboat... hmmm... okie, going for Seafood steamboat today then! hmm... small serves 1-2, but large one serves 2-4? I think large one makes better sense here. 15 mins later, by the time the food came, the place was already pretty crowded with people. The steamboat - Prawns , scallops, squids, fish cakes, vegetables, onions. Not too bad. Completely filled to the brim. Soup is pretty amazing, sweet and clear, I like it. We do feel that the food is just enough enough for 2... hmmm. just remember to order at least 2 large serve should you dine out with more than 2 pax. :)
