I turned the corner and there he was--cast in bronze, robes folded neatly, eyes closed like he was mid-prayer. The backdrop was simple, with carved words that gently reminded me of peace, gratitude, and faith. It wasn't grand or flashy. No plaques begging for attention. Just a quiet, grounded presence in the middle of a city that rarely slows down. It felt less like visiting a monument and more like stepping into a pause. A small sacred space honoring a man whose legacy clearly mattered to someone deeply. You don't need more than five minutes here, but those five minutes feel different--calmer, somehow. And that's worth something.

"Tamai Tower" has three granite parts and stands behind him with the quotes on the wings, "The highest life is when everything results in a feeling of gratitude" and "Discard our egotistical heart and replace it with the mind of faith" The plaque at his feet provides the context. It reads, "Born October 10, 1900. Died September 25, 1983. A native of Toyama-ken, Japan, the Dev. Tamai came to Denver in June of 1930. He devoted the rest of his life - 53 years - to the spiritual, cultural and social needs of Buddhists in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. He taught by example those admirable qualities embodied in the Buddhist faith. His kindness and compassion touched thousands, creating a rich and lasting heritage. Tamai Tower was erected in 1972 as a living memorial to this gentle priest recognized as one of Jodo Shinshu's most eminent ministers. This statue is dedicated to his memory by a community which loved and respected the priest often called the "Living Buddha." Dedicated October 5, 1996." You will find this interesting sculpture outside of the Church of the Holy Ghost. It is the…read morework of sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg (creator of the world-famous Rocky statue) who dedicated the piece in 1986. Schomberg created the piece in commemoration of the veterans, their comrades, their personal and emotional sacrifices and to acknowledge those Americans who have lost loved ones in the service of their country. The memorial consists of a bronze life-sized figure that is lying prone on top of an eleven-foot-tall rectangular granite platform. The figure is supposed to be a soldier covered with a tarp. So, you really cannot see them. But they is by design though. The unknown soldier is meant to represent any man or woman, any rank or division and stands as a silent memorial of every American who has given their lives in combat. You will find a helmet with a camouflage-cover next to them. His right arm and right booted- foot extend from out under the tarp and over the side of the platform. The sculpture is in great shape, especially considering its age. This piece grabs your attention, but honestly, I think there is something missing to keep it. I still do like this piece though and I am all for anything that supports/acknowledges veterans. This is one of three of these sculptures with the other two being located at the National Museum of the Marine Corp in Quantico, VA and the Riverside National Military Cemetery in Riverside, CA. This is not a destination piece and most of its visitors would probably be coming from or going to another destination and just so happen to stumble across this sculpture. Anyway, as with most public art works that I visit, I highly recommend making a visit to see this sculpture part of a larger itinerary.

Happy 4th of July (2022)!! There's plenty of parking out front at Springhill Park. One spot is reserved for the Combat Wounded visitor. There's also a restroom at the far end of the parking lot where the entrance is. Not too far, but far enough away from there is a picnic area. As I got out of the car, I first noticed the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. It consists of four pieces and between two pieces is a soldier saluting in the negative space. It is so cool! Civilians tend to forget that there are families surrounding the fallen soldiers who have to carry on without their loved ones. It's so fitting that this memorial also includes them. Then I surveyed the rest of the memorial and was awestruck. The glass wall with so many names etched on it. There are about 6,000 who've been killed in action since Colorado became a state! The last panel is facing a different direction and on that panel are the names of those Missing In Action. The slanted glass panels are quite striking. There's a narrow channel of water in front. From what I read online, the glass is to represent the Rocky Mountains. This memorial is specifically to honor those Coloradans who gave their lives. On site, there is a box with a binder with all the names (in alphabetical order) and the location where you can find them on the glass wall. There are flags from each branch of the US Military are flying on the flag poles! Since July 4th is almost here, there are American flags lining the walkway. To the left, in reddish stone, maybe marble or granite, are 8 columns. Each one has the name of a country where soldiers were lost and laid to rest... Belgium, England, France, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, The Philippines, and Tunisia. Some soil was taken from various soldiers' gravesites there and brought here. Thus the words "From Hallowed Ground To Home's Embrace". I appreciate the attention to detail and planning that went into creating this special place. Come take a moment to visit with gratitude for their sacrifice for our freedom because they were so brave.

"The Double Gateway to the Rockies"…read more I stayed here in Lyons on my trip to Rocky Mountain National Park because it was only 20 miles away. They also had more affordable options than Estes Park. It is a small town with a population of around 2,000. I enjoyed taking some time to explore Lyons during my brief visit here. The town of Lyons has a lot of cool-looking historic buildings. Many of the restaurants and stores are all within walking distance in the downtown area. I was able to do some shopping at the local grocery store because my hotel had a kitchen. For coffee, I spent time at Barking Dog Cafe. The coffee is smooth and the customer service was great. For food and drinks, I recommend MainStage Brewing. They specialize in pizza and good beer and have a vibrant outdoor patio area. All of these places are located on the main road through town. The Lyons Redstone Museum is free and open to the public on a donation basis if you want to learn more about the history of this town. It is housed in the town's school house. The Rockygrass Bluegrass festival and the Folks Festival folk music festival are two annual music festivals held at their outdoor venue called Planet Bluegrass. Lyons is a great place to stay if you love outdoor recreation activities like camping, hiking, fishing and whitewater kayaking.

Although, I've been in and out of Estes Park for the last 15 years, I haven't actually explored the Town of Lyons much. We came here during our peak to peak scenic byway drive, and figured that this town was only 30 minutes away. It was absolutely the emporium of small town! Beekeepers were spotted with local "bee-farming," and local honey for sale. Most shops were simple, supported by the community and seem to be all the rage in honey!! This community is friendly to senior citizens, because we saw lots of senior citizen friendly neighborhoods. One of them, were actually located across the street from Sandstone Park, and Lyons Depot Library. Those are two spots that make wonderful activities for anyone. We saw also lots of friendly looking people, who waved back and smiled often. It seems everyone built a foundation of friendship and familiarity here.

The Millers moved to the area to become farmers but platted most of their land in the formation of the then town after coal was discovered. After the coal mines shut down in the mid 1950s, Lafayette reverted back to agriculture. Today the city is a popular recreation destination with Waneka Lake being the focal point. Many city residents enjoy the many forms of recreation offered, such as hiking, biking and other forms of outdoor activities. The city has many festivals year round, with the peach festival being at the forefront.
