(1) Look, if you read the glowing 5-star reviews of this place, notice how they're mostly 3 years ago and older. This is because the staff here *USED TO BE* amazing. Justin, one of the best barbers they had, doesn't work here anymore. (2) Also, their hours are falsely advertised. They're closed on Mondays, and I just swung by at 4:00pm and the place is completely empty an hour before their alleged closing time. (3) Lastly, I find this place to be elitist- like you can only get your haircut here if you're some kind of stud who can afford getting a fade 2x a month. Last time I went here, the barbers saw my long hair and teasingly asked me: "so, what salon do you go to?" I'm a college student, and I'm often too broke to get a haircut for up to a few months at a time. So just because I'm a white guy who let his hair grow out, (because I was too broke to cut it) I go to a salon, apparently? They treated me like a joke and that I didn't belong in a barber shop because I wasn't "macho enough" with my long hair. I hate this macho-only culture. My son didn't have an appointment but walked into this place Wednesday for a haircut. This is what paying $25 plus tip for a botched haircut gets you. Disgraceful!!! The pictures are one side of his head and the other. He's so humiliated that he doesn't even want to go back because he feels like it was done on purpose because he was a walk in. After leaving this barber shop and I'm extremely disappointed and wish I could express my dissatisfaction face to face to the owner of this establishment. My brother laughed at me when I walked into the house! I'm unsure if this was a student that cut my hair or this place simply doesn't cut African American type hair. I felt I was very clear as to what I wanted and being that I just paid $25.00 plus tip I should be a happy customer given the high ratings and looks of this place. Yes the establishment is beautiful but if you happen to have hair like mine and want to get a quality haircut in a great atmosphere that clearly has some black folks working there, one would think that they knew what they were doing right? I was sadly mistaken and the owner should have at least a few folks there that can cut my type of hair instead of trial and error, risking a scathing review such as this one. My fiancé came in for a haircut and a shave, we were recommended by a friend that has been going there for years and has been very affordable for him. My fiancé was told he needed the full works to cut his hair and he was NOT told the price beforehand. This was his first time there and figured the price was reasonable due to other reviews that were left and didn't think it would be that much. I am extremely disappointed in how his hair cut turned out and he was charged $160 for a haircut and shave. If I knew how this haircut would turn out I would've rather him not cut his hair at all. The manager or owner called me on the phone while I was at work before I saw it and he was very nice and respectful. I have no complaints on the workers but the quality isn't up to the cost of the service. This was a trial run before our wedding because of the style of the barber shop we were going to send our groomsmen and my fiancé to be pampered and stylish. Haircuts are decent, but have gotten insanely expensive, and the website doesn't market that. Haircuts around here are generally 20-30 dollars. Used to pay 25 at the parlor just a couple months ago. My barber left and started cutting on his own, so I went with him. He was out of town and I was desperate for a cut so I went back to the parlor. Decent haircut, not nearly as clean as my barber, but was charged 45 dollars. My jaw dropped. I know the kid working the chair isn't getting that money so I had to leave a tip. Ended up paying 51 dollars for an okay haircut. Would I recommend their barbers, sure, would I recommend anyone lying 45 dollars for a haircut in Lynchburg when you can get really good ones for 20-25, f*ck no. read more

I went here for over a year and it was my go to barber. Charles was the first person I got and I went to him most of the time but many of the barbers are great, the atmosphere is cool and the occasional complimentary beer is also cool. However, the main reason I started going there was so that I could request who I went to see. It just helps me know I'm getting the same cut that I like and paying the same price. Let's be honest, I'm a guy, I don't spend a ton of time thinking about hair I don't want to explain myself every time to a new person. One time I called in and asked to make an appointment with Charles and the person who picked up the phone just said "I don't make appointments for other barbers." And hung up the phone. Second time, fairly certain it was the same person picked up, I asked to make an appointment with Charles and he said okay took down the time and when I showed up he said Charles is off today but everyone else here is a master barber and knows how to cut your hair. I asked if he had made me an appointment with someone else than and he said no. I waited for someone to be available and got Jeff. Jeff was really nice and adjusted his price to be the same as Charles and did a great job. No doubt about it Jeff was awesome. However, this is the last time I went here. When I call in to make an appointment I don't want to deal with someone giving me crap about choosing someone else or just straight up saying they made an appointment and then not. If I'm paying this much money for a cut I'm not going to feel bad about choosing who I want. read more

The staff are all genuinely friendly attentive. The Parlor offers shoe shines, haircuts, shaves, facials, and shampoos. You are treated like royalty every step of the way. The chairs are comfortable and the entire experience is very relaxing. Best of all the great haircut was only $20! This is the best barber shop experience I have had! Definitely best in class. I have been going here consistently for a few months now and always have a good experience. The staff are first class, the atmosphere is very comfortable, the price is reasonable and the haircut has always been great. On a visit to Lynchburg 1 and a half years ago, my husband got a straight razor shave here. It was all he could talk about since. He had never had one so this was a great experience him. The whole experience was a treat and what a great shave! We travel a lot so he had others in different cities but nothing compared to the shave at 9th Street Parlor. I needed to come to Lynchburg for family business this month. The ONLY reason my husband decided to join me on my long journey from California was to get another great shave. Sadly, it was not so great. His appointment was at 1:00 pm but did not get in for his shave until almost 2:00. The guy shaving him was fairly new, it was not quite the "spa" experience he had before and worse, he was left with stubble patches on his face. He had to shave again as soon as he returned home. My husband is kind and would never complain to the barber but to his friends is another matter. I am not sure he will return unless he is guaranteed a more seasoned barber. Hands down this was the BEST experience I had. 7 of us went in for a last minute groomsman session. I personally had Chopper. I said, please just make me look good. He explained what he was going to do and made me check the mirror every time he did something. Chopper made sure my hair looked amazing, told me how to maintain, and explained how to get it done when I return home (Connecticut). I walked in today just to get a quick cut while visiting from Minneapolis and was met with hospitality that you would only expect from high-end metropolitan salons. Charles was my barber and his precision was on point. Never did I once feel like his customer, but instead Charles made every attempt to make me feel welcomed as his guest. A good haircut is one thing, but to be met with such personal and empathetic hospitality is what creates businesses and clients that last. From my ears to eyebrows to neck, not a hair was left astray. From a complimentary Yuengling to an unexpected hot shave and shampoo, Charles' service never faltered. When he asked how everything was, I didn't know what to say that could describe my appreciation. My long time Barber of 20 years moved on and it was time to get a haircut. After reading the reviews I decided to splurge and head to 9th Street. Previously I'd have tried to hit a shop when it was busy and watch a couple of barbers work before making a selection but that wasn't an option here. I called and told the gentleman who answered the phone what I wanted and let him select my Barber. Jeff West is a Master Barber and after a second haircut I realize what that means. The first time in his chair I told him the end result that I was looking for and frankly I left with a 90% solution. That's not bad considering that most of the 10% was probably on me. Three weeks later I decided it was time to schedule another appointment which is definitely one of the benefits of 9th Street. Looking for a time later this week I was told that Jeff was going on vacation starting the next day. Getting a good haircut takes finding the right Barber and then dialing it in to get it just right so I asked if he could squeeze me in later that day. Right in time I was shaking hands with Jeff. I told him how I wanted to tweak what we had done (this is a team effort) Jeff got to work and I relaxed. We got it right. After only two visits we've reached the point where all I have to do is sit down in his chair and he knows what I want and delivers it. In my experience, almost 30 years in uniform, that is pretty rare. A haircut and beard trim costs a little more in downtown Lynchburg than it does in Forest and it is a bit of a drive but it is worth it on both counts. See you in a couple of weeks Jeff. The barber Jeff did not pay attention to my instructions for the cut. I said 3/4" off the top and clean up the sides. He then proceeded to cut off hair that was almost 3 inches long. He also cut hair off near my forehead for no discernible reason. Very disappointing. It'll take months to get my hair back to what its supposed to be. read more

Maybe I should have described my visit more thoroughly than the initial post that I had submitted. And just as others have said, everyone is entitled to their opinion. This was my experience. Upon coming to the parlor, I was sat in a booth to get my haircut. At the time, the barbers must have recently moved booths. During my haircut, the barber was a nice kid who had, at that time, been newer to cutting hair. Self-proclaimed. No problem from my perspective. The booth that I was sitting in was in disarray. The drawers continued to open and would hit my legs when swiveling the chair. After my haircut, the gentleman informed me that the chair could transfer into a massage chair and that I could have a hot towel placed on my face. Sounded great. During the time that my chair had been leaned back, the head rest fell off which left me sitting and holding my head up. Once this process had come to a close and it was time for me to pay, the gentleman ran both my debit card and then my credit card. Both were declined. We were then informed that the card machine was not working and the gentleman stated that I would need to go up the street to the Bank of the James to get cash out. I am not a client through this bank which resulted in me being required to pay a surcharge in order to get the sufficient funds to pay for my haircut. Upon getting 40 dollars out to pay for my haircut, I was then informed that the gentleman did not have change for a 25 dollar haircut and would need to find someone to get change since the register did not have funds for which to equal out the transaction. As the gentleman left, his colleague stood by the door to, from what I perceived, make sure I did not leave. Which at this point, I could have already done. Again, to each his own perspective. However if the information that had been provided to me prior to coming to the parlor had been true, one would think I would have had a different experience. No complimentary beer, no "life long" like service, no shave, no headrest that remains on the chair, no working card reader, no cash in the register, no trust that the client will not run away throughout the transaction was provided. Again, Diamond Cutz may not provide the Yuengling or the pretty fountain in the middle, but if you are wanting a simple and classic barber experience where you talk sports while getting your haircut just to get back to your day job, then diamond cutz is where to go. I can find beer and a massage at home. Ninth Street Parlor is perfect for college kids that want to go for the sake of saying they go and post it on social media. read more

First time here. Nice peaceful, classy atmosphere. Got my hair cut at 3 o clock on a Tuesday with no wait time. My barber was Brenden. He was a quiet and very professional guy. Cost of haircut was $25. I didn't get the haircut I wanted, but he still did a very good job on the haircut I received. Haircut took about 30-40 minutes. I know everyone is raving about having a beer at the shop, but there was no beer. All things taken into consideration, this is still probably the best barbershop I've been to in Lynchburg. If you're 21 or older, they'll offer you a beer in a chilled glass. The staff is friendly and skilled in their craft. Worst. Haircut. Ever. The 9th Street Parlor has the best atmosphere and customer service that I have ever seen in a barber shop. Upon entering for the first time, I was treated as if I had been a lifelong customer. I was offered a complimentary beer, and was given a stellar complimentary shoe-shine. These things are icing on the cake. But alas, my experience was all icing and no cake. When I go to any barber shop, my baseline expectation is that I will receive a decent haircut. When I go to a place like The Parlor and pay $25, my baseline expectation is that I will receive an excellent haircut--nay, a haircut fit for royalty. The haircut I received was shoddy, plain and simple. I would have expected better from Great Clips; I most certainly expected better from The Parlor. To give you an idea of the kind of cut I received: I am a young attorney; I need to look professional and I like to be in style. I instructed the barber (Padrino) that I needed to leave some length on top because of my hair's tendency to stand on end, especially around the crown. I left with a crown looking and feeling like a porcupine--sticking straight up. More egregiously, Padrino missed several large patches of hair on the side of my head, leaving me with 2-3 inch hairs amidst 1/2 inch hairs; needless to say, that stood out and required significant touching up after I got home. I almost need not even mention his failure to gradually layer the hairs from the top to the sides, or the pain I experienced as he rather unskillfully hacked at my proud mane. It felt and looked as if he actually used a lawn mower to "cut" my head lawn. And at the end, he didn't even bother brushing off the hewn hairs and so I left with the clippings all over my face. In all seriousness, I cannot say enough bad things about the haircut that I received. I do not doubt that other customers have had positive experiences at this establishment, and it is quite possible that I simply drew the short straw and got served by the only inexperienced barber there. Or perhaps my barber simply had an off day. Whatever the reason for the extremely poor haircut, I won't be spending another $25 (plus tip) to find it out. If you're looking for a quality cut for less than half the cost ($12), I HIGHLY recommend Ms. Sim Scott of Hats Off Barber Shop on Timberlake Road. I have NEVER had a bad cut from Sim (the wonderful Asian lady who owns the establishment) and I am a very picky person when it comes to my hair. The only reason I didn't go to Sim this time is because she was out of town. Now I wish I had just waited. read more

I feel like I've been wasting my life up until now! The entire experience was fantastic and I was left with the closest shave I've ever had! My go to barter ( Brent )is a young man with the sensitivity of an artist and the skill of a professional of many years experience. This is not a quick haircut and out the door type of shop. These people are very professional and serious about their work and it is due entirely to the pride and commitment that Ralph believes in and to the excellence he demands from his barbers. Yesterday was my anniversary. My husband and I were walking to the cupcake bakery and spotted this place right next door. I talked him into getting a haircut. For $20 he got a GREAT haircut, a shave, hot towel treatment, eyebrow and nose hair trimming. They even offer you your choice of complementary beer, bottled water, or wine. The parlor is beautifully decorated in Eastlake Victorian style. Dark woods, private stalls, a relaxing fountain, and even a shoe shine. The guy who cut his hair (Jason) was VERY friendly and did a wonderful job. My husband really enjoyed the experience and I was not bored while I was waiting for him. After we paid, the owner of the Parlor even gave him a full bottle of their private label men's hair gel ($15) for free. He is excited for his next haircut! read more
