I take NJ Transit (coach usa) everyday to NYC and the buses are dirty. Just like planes clean them before take off on yes that will be hard but back clean when you come in for the night. Check for problems. Last week the defrost wasn't working when it was snowing me and another passenger was wiping the windows so the driver could see and on top of that the bus was leaking water on me as I sat for my trip home. Some of the drivers drive like they in a sports car or regardless of their passengers hits every pot hole. Why count their tickets and whole punch while driving? read more

Just had my day totally ruined by the biggest asshole ever =( Was taking a train outta Penn Station & the train conductor got into an argument w the french couple sitting across from me. Then, came to me & wouldn't accept my disabled person's I.d card. He said, "What is this? This means nothing to me." I said, "It's my disabled I.d card and I'm supposed to present it on the train to get my disabled discount." He said anyone can get a fake one of those. You need to talk to NJ Transit and get a card from them that says you're disabled. I'm like, "WTF? I've never had to do that. I've taken the train hundreds of times and no conductor has ever told me that and it says specifically on my I.d card that this is all I need (and if need be to present my regular license with foto I.d)." He said, "But you could easily have a fake disabled I.d card so I'm not accepting it, what don't u understand?" Btw the car was packed and everyone was watching me. So then he's like, "So what do you want?" And I said, "Ok a regular ticket?" He charged me 15 bucks (as opposed to the 3.50 I should be charged) bc he's "chargin me extra for buying my ticket on the train, the way reg ticket buyers get charged" (disabled passengers can buy tickets on the train with no super surcharge). Everyone was like that's really fucked up! And then I paid and could feel the tears starting to come & no way to stop them. Luckily I had my hat down, so at least I kept a tiny sliver of pride. The conductor didn't give me his name and when I asked for a receipt to get a refund (when I report him to NJ Transit) he said, "Your ticket's ur receipt", tossed my ticket on my lap and walked away. This Dbag was a conductor on the 6:08 Dover Direct NJ Transit Train out of Penn Station. I hope he gets fired for just making me feel like a POS, with 98565 braces on, two effing crutches that keep falling over & a crowed rush hour train-load of people listening to me beg someone for basic treatment. Last week one nurse made my day in the ER by being compassionate. This week someone ruined it by being an asshole. read more

If I could rate it no stars, I would. Probably the worst investment of your money. Constant delays, cancellations, and disappointment. Customer service is basically the same email response. Most (not all) conductors have a nasty attitude to customers on the train. Especially first time riders who may not know how the system works. Aboard the train, everyone is in a horrible mood, because there aren't enough seats and its over crowded. The negative atmosphere is very contagious and can turn your good days into bad. Imagine an awful experience, and NJT can even surpass that. read more

When it works, NJT is fine. But there are times when it doesn't - either due to a holiday, change in schedule or just simply being late - when it is not fine. I consistently take the 1:38a.m. train into the city (due to my schedule at work) and then out the blue it didn't show up. They claim it was there at 1:28a.m., after months of it being there at 1:38a.m., but it wasn't because I was near the train station in the parking lot and saw no train going to NY Penn Station. I don't understand why y'all can't use the app to learn customers to a change in regular schedule times? Also, it makes no sense why I leave my house the same time every day, but this train's arrival time varies so much that it often makes me late. And that causes me to miss the connecting trains I need in the city and increases my commute time from 35 minutes to an hour - regularly. Finally, why can't y'all have a mask only car or section? Sometimes there's simply no way to safely social distance and I frequently stand up entire ride in order to social distance read more

Trains are quiet and clean. They are usually on time for the most part the conductors are polite and helpful with directions. Signage is very good as well. Great way to get into NYC for a good fare! read more

Smells, broke down twice, all types of people on board. You get what u pay for. It's simply not worth it. I would rent car, catch taxi, book private car instead unless u dont mind the homeless and unsafe atmosphere. I will never use another train in my life. It was my 1st and last time trying. Communication is awful. You cant understand announcements of your stop. They said due to technical difficulties the train had an hour delay. My mom got off train for questions. They used to be better a couple of years ago, but it seems that ever since May's 25% Increase, they can't get their act straight. It's ALWAYS SOMETHING! Two words.. "Horrible service".. I commute regularly to NY penn using NJ transit. It surprises me when the train arrives or departs on time coz it happens once in blue moon!! And the sad part is that it is aggressively priced. Service is no where justifying the price in any context. Management is pathetic. Every now and then something goes wrong with the infrastructure and trains are either delayed or cancelled. They should offer free service every alternate days to compensate for such poor service. I'm just fed up and I'm planning to change my job soon to avoid using NJ transit; better than getting fired because of late attendance every alternate day. Delayed, late, slow, switches to local halfway through an express train, air conditioning in the winter, feces smeared in the bathrooms. I mean, what else can be said. Not worth my $400 monthly ticket. One time I fell asleep on the train and wound up in the Sunnyside train yard, only to be screamed at and mocked by a conductor because none of their employees bother to check the train before deboarding... seems real safe - what if someone passes out from a medical emergency? Was once stranded with no AC for 55 minutes in the scorching sun without any updates or offers ot open windows. The list goes on... Most useless, rude employees. Literal joke of a business. Dear NJ Transit: While contemplating the new fare hike, which I believe is proposed to be 7%, please take the following into consideration: * The Montclair/Boonton line experiences major delays far too often. Come on, do you really expect us to believe that each and every week, there's an electrical problem...or a stalled train ahead of us...or a fire...or a tree that fell...or another electrical problem? * The trains that go to Hoboken are embarrassingly old and dirty. They smell like urine and/or old cigarettes. CIGARETTES! How many decades has it been since smoking was banned on public transportation? The ones that go into Penn Station are better--how 'bout a few more of the newer ones? * The train that runs into Penn Station around 9:50 p.m. from the Upper Montclair station always has between 8-9 completely empty cars. With gas prices being what they are, don'tcha think it makes more sense to run shorter, full trains back and forth rather than longer, empty ones? (This is coming from someone who HATES to sit next to strangers, but hates the idea of spending more for crappy transportation even more.) * What the hell is up with NO train service after 10 p.m. on weeknights or AT ALL on weekends? Montclair alone has SIX train stations, which are always packed, so obviously there's a demand. Think about it. Instead of increasing our fares, how 'bout running a few more trains to collect some more fares? * And I know this is more a town thing than a NJ Transit thing, but since I'm on the soapbox I'll vent about this, too--what's up with having to pay for parking?? The surrounding areas have free parking lots for NJ Transit users...why does Montclair charge around $4 a day? We already pay approx. $120 per month to commute to Manhattan using NJ transit, not to mention PATH or MetroCard fares and, oh yeah, since we live in NJ, we also have to shell out for car payments, insurance, and gas to get us to the train stations in the first place. I took NJ Transit on Thanksgiving. I had to take the Dover line and change at Newark for the Bay Street station. Unbeknowst to me, on the Dover line they had added extra cars which extended beyond the platform - as a result, the doors never opened on my car. There was no announcement of any kind. Several other people besides my family missed their stop due to the incompentence of NJ Transit. We found some conductors in the next car - they were sitting around chatting with each other - none had bothered to walk to the affected cars to warn people about what was going to happen. We had to wait a half hour to go in the other direction, so we missed our connection and then the next connecting train was an hour later. Total delay one and a half hours due to NJ transit's incompetence. read more

After living in Hudson County for nine months now, I have gotten a pretty good idea how the NJ Transit system does or doesn't work. Those of us who live in this part of Jersey exist in a strange netherworld somewhere halfway between an urban and a suburban existence. Owning a car is too much of a hassle (my opinion,) yet there are times when you really wish you had one. If you don't own a car, you end up learning all the quirks of public transportation here. I divided up this lengthy review of NJ Transit into sections, because the NJT system consists of different parts. Actually, I included two methods that might not be technically part of the NJ Transit system, the ferry and the PATH, but they're related. NJ Transit Trains: They are on time, as far as I can tell. They are comfortable. They are rather expensive. They are also unbelievably baffling, puzzle-like, nonsensical, and confusing. I am not sure how they designed the ticketing/naming/notation system, but it's about as illogical as one could possibly imagine. For example, if you buy a ticket from, say Hoboken to Morristown at a kiosk, sometimes it goes straight through. Other times it stops at Seacaucus. Okay fine. What they don't tell you is that if you stop at Seacaucus, you need another $3 ticket just to get on the second train, if the kiosk didn't tell you that, which it doesn't always. Tickets are still checked the old-fashioned way, by a human conductor punching holes in it. While this is nostalgic and romantic and all (brings to mind Hitchcock films or something,) isn't there a more efficient way to do this? Also, the naming conventions of the various lines assume you know the geography of Jersey inside and out, and hey, not everyone does. Sometimes the aforementioned Morristown line goes to Dover instead of Morristown. They change the line name to "Dover," assuming that everyone knows they're the same line. Well, everyone doesn't. NJ Transit Buses: These are actually relatively punctual and comfortable. Once in a while, the bus drivers are actually cheery or enthusiastic. I overheard one of them talking about the pay scale as a bus driver, and I think that would explain the occasional spurt of cheer or enthusiasm. It is quite perplexing, however to figure out where exactly you are and where to get off. And transferring? I have no idea. Also, there is an incredibly antiquated system where the drivers must take cash and make change, which slows your entire trip down. It's 2007. You mean to tell me they can't figure out a more efficient method? Light Rail System: If you just need to go up and down the river on this side of the Hudson, this is pretty good. The trains are always on time and fairly pleasant to ride. The ticket system is silly, though. You buy a ticket, then get it validated, then if an inspector asks, you have to show your ticket. Isn't there a better way to do this? Also, if you are traveling very early or very late, there is no service. Port Authority Ferry: This is the fastest way across the Hudson. From Port Imperial to 39th street is 6 minutes (yes, I did time it,) not to mention getting the best view. It is, however, $6 each way, three times the cost of the PATH or a bus. However, if you're willing to pay that and want a great view for 6 minutes, this is the way to go. PATH: Overall, I love this thing. The PATH has, in some ways, made Jersey an extension of NYC, at least as far as accessibility and convenience go. It runs 24 hours a day, stops at a bunch of convenient places, and it's cheap. My only complaint is that they physically separate PATH stations from Metro stations, which I think is stupid as hell. If I take the PATH to Penn Station, why do I have to get OUT of the tunnel, walk on the street, and then go back IN to get to the subway? This would never, ever happen in Hong Kong or Tokyo--they'd have a tunnel built with moving sidewalks, several hundred signs in five languages telling you how to navigate the tunnel, and four Starbucks along the way in case you wanted a cup of coffee. Overall, I'd have to say that despite the steep learning curve, I like the NJ Transit system. Hey, I moved here from L.A., which has no (working) public transportation at all, despite a population of 7 million or so. No, NJT is not perfect and has its quirks. Most of all, I don't understand why they don't unify ticketing/payment methods. I mean, in Hong Kong, your Octopus card works on everything, trains, ferries, buses, even 7-11, Starbucks, and McDonalds. Why they can't do that here is beyond me. Still, coming from car-centric L.A., the NJT keeps me from having to pay for, insure, and park a car, and that's really refreshing. read more

It got me to where I needed to be. I took it from Trenton to NY and vice versa. The Trenton station was nice, and we spotted a Dunkin Doughnuts just as we walked over to get our tickets. Friendly people too; my sister was looking for the button to press, and some nice guy showed us which one to press (and the ticket machines are a piece of cake; well, they are for the most part). The train was on time (both times), and since we took the express (both times), the ride literally felt like it was only 10 minutes. It was really quiet, and the only noise I heard was when we got to NY and people began talking on their phones (since they were soon getting off). The seats were nice both times, and I was actually surprised from what I've read in the past, and for the price, it was really more than I expected to get. I also found it EXTREMELY easy to figure out where to go, and it was my first time taking it. When I was going to NY, we just looked at the board to find the time and track (then there was either 1 or 2) and what entry way to go into. If you get confused, just ask; the people are willing to help, and won't bite (well, lets hope not). (And there was also a guy yelling how to get to NY: "up the stairs and make a right." About the price (when it comes to going to NY); NJ transit is cheap compared to Amtrak and parking in NY (you'll end up paying probably $30.00 or more in just a parking lot, and then add on gas and waiting in traffic). It's only $21.50 during off peak hours ( + an extra $3.50 during rush hour). Oh, and I also think I seen the guy from the travel channel here, Anthony Bourdain. Well... it looked like him =). I watch his show all the time, so that was pretty interesting. Or... maybe because I watch the show all the time, I just had 'Bourdain on the brain.' But the question = would Bourdain take NJ Transit too? read more

Used the train as a mode of transportation to a concert. While using the bathroom, me and 6 other women got stuck in their small dirty restrooms for about 20 minutes. We were banging on the door and calling for help and finally a conductor came and unlocked us out... after 20 minutes. absolutely terrifying few minutes. Never riding again. read more

Just downright horrible. Buses and trains are constantly late and there is never an apology or attempt to refund customers, offer free rides, or address their constant failings as a transportation authority. I don't understand why so few trains and buses run, on weekends, from the biggest city in the world to the US' most densely populated state. Rates are not that cheap either, and transportation, on weekends, stops at around midnight. Perfect, because you want a bunch of drunk partygoers that each drop tons of cash at bars and restaurants going back home to Jersey, drunk, in their cars. Makes perfect sense. Just waited over an hour for a bus after not being able to board one that became full, because the previous bus didn't show. Walked from Port to Penn because I don't know when and/or if the bus will show, to take a train and have a friend pick me up from Secaucus junction. I'm lucky enough to have someone who will pick me up. Most people don't. Learn some accountability, NJ Transit. Or send one of your corporate employees on a trip to Europe and Japan and figure out how the hell they don't have this problem ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Papa Stafa out. read more

Using Transit to get to NY from Metuchen train station Saturday 4pm... for someone that has only used any train like 4 times in my life I must say this trip was pleasant. The train conductor was a nice guy. He made us laugh when we gave him two tickets. He said u don't want to give me two tickets or you will be sh*t out of luck lol. But he didn't cursed. He used the acronym. Made it feel comfortable knowing some type of authority is around in case of emergency/fight or other disturbance. The train is open to all walks of life. Anything can happen. I do see from a security aspect it would be nice if there were security presence whether or not it's police or Security officers(on the trains and at the stations). Overall the process was easy and comfortable. read more

Please do better. Every time I take the train I never make it back from my destination because everything is so unclear and there are no announcements. Very poor communication. I've had a very long day and i'm tired and sweaty and i'm just about to get on my connecting train home and it just says cancelled. No workers to be found anywhere for information and no refunds given. $15 will get you from New York Penn Station to Newark International Airport and vice versa. The train is often packed though, so the experience is never quite comfortable. The low price is the clear selling point considering the equivalent cost of a taxi, but be aware. If your delayed flight arrives in the middle of the night you will find yourself waiting to exactly 4:48 am for the first train out of the airport. Yes, that's right. You will be stranded with no way out until that very arbitrary time. Yikes! read more

I was shocked when I actually saw that I could write a review about this company. I have been soo displeased with riding the bus lines and having to commute daily by bus is soo stressful when you are dealing with people who can't do their jobs. I usually ride the 94, 24, 21, 73, 25 and I have been upset more than happy. I am not trying to talk down on all bus drivers, because I love some of the bus drivers, there are those who greet you and have a smile on their faces, and those people deserve a bonus for their kind services!! There are some rude bus drivers who just make me want throw a temper tantrum and they just need to be fired. Is it right for a driver to argue with a customer? Some drivers need to know when to not reply and just continue serving the customers, rather than picking fights with passengers. I don't mean to sound sexist but most of the time, I find that female drivers tend to be more rude compared to male drivers "overall". There are polite women, but I have observed that women, on average, tend have a lot of attitude. The 24 is, by FAR, the WORST bus to ride, it is either late, extremely late, and I have had moments when the bus did not show up until the following bus was scheduled (which is about 45 minutes waiting) to run. Some buses do not run late enough, others run too often, or some barely run, it is such a mess. A word of advice; do not waste your time calling customer service!!! I would recommend writing reviews about the service because customer service is limited up to 6 or 7 and when you actually want to complain it may be way too late. I wish there was some competition. The train service is decent, I have nothing really to complain about. You ride a train to get from point A to point B and the rail service does just that. I have never traveled by light rail so am unable to comment on that service. If you have the option not to ride transit....Please do NOT ride transit!!! read more

One of the main reasons I'm moving out of my current apartment is so I don't have to suffer and have unreliable, overpriced, subpar NJTransit as part of my daily commute. You have an important meeting you need to get to so you plan your arrival 30 minutes ahead? Well, nice try but more often than not, that's not good enough for NJTransit.
