I'm giving this review 3 stars but maybe 2.5 would be more accurate. We took the Air Train from EWR to NY Penn Station. My god, these trains are ancient. They look like they were built decades ago. The outside is grungy and the interior of the train was a bit shabby. For an airport train, they really don't design the interior to accommodate checked luggage. The seating space is so narrow that we had to squeeze our luggage in, then contort ourselves for the whole trip in order to fit so that our luggage wouldn't spill over into the aisle. Luckily we are just a family of 3, with a toddler so we could all pack into the seat. They also had a ticket collector come through the train to collect our tickets. I thought that was weird as I only saw that on old westerns where the conductor would collect tickets on the old the coal fired locomotives. Then, I realized it's probably a union job so that's why there's no innovation to verify the tickets via ticketing machine. read more

Utter chaos. Nearly missed my flight because of this excuse of a train. Due to construction, the train went to terminal B and turned around without visiting P3 and terminal A. There were no clear instructions by the several workers in red jackets that you must transfer at terminal B to get to the train that would proceed to terminal A. Instead, we were told misleading and contradicting information by each different worker. This resulted in over an hour wasted. It would be far more useful if the overhead speaker in the train gave proper directions rather than the workers yelling sporadically. Although I arrived to the air train from the NJ Transit 2 hours in advance of my flight, I finally made it to security AFTER my flight takeoff time. If my flight wouldn't have been delayed, I wouldn't have made it. Do better. read more

The AirTran is a free service offered by the Newark airport. It takes passengers from terminal to terminal without having to walk. The last stop for the air train is the Amtrak and other services. If you exit the airport, you will see a sign that says shuttle to air train. Cross the street and wait for the shuttle. Agents are there to assist you. The last stop on the shuttle is for the air train. Again agents are on the curb to direct you. This is very helpful. The air train runs often so no worries if you miss one. Is about a 15 to 20 minute ride to get to the Amtrak station. read more

If you're traveling to/from terminals C and B, this isn't a bad option for most people. Just keep in mind that QR code readers are a bit finicky, so you'll have to play around with the phone to get it to scan your NJ Transit ticket. The issue is Terminal A. Because the terminal is new, AirTrain was not properly set up for the terminal. You have to either walk 15 mins or wait for a shuttle bus (which to be fair is usually there) to take you to the terminal. What this means is that by default, you have to budget an extra 20 mins if taking this option to the airport. That isn't the most convenient for travelers, especially since the distance from the terminal B stop to Terminal A is at least 5 mins or so. read more

This is a great way to connect between terminals at EWR. Newark is one of the few aiports where the three main terminals are each independent stand alone buildings, so to from from like gate A1 to C1, the best way is to take the AirTrain. It's quick and easy. It's free and all you need to do is to keep an eye for the signs....some of them are not very clear nor big, so keep your eyes open or ask someone. The train itself is not vey big, but they do run often. read more

The AirTrain is part of the airport system and it connect the NJ Transit to the Newart Airport. If you are going to the airport by NJ Transit, there is an extra cost to it so make sure you tell the ticket attendant that you are going to the airport. The ride was very short and the AirTrain stops at every terminal and at the parking garage as well for those who need to go and retrieve their car. Only one thing is that the AirTrain is very small and you might need to wait before you are able to get on. I say for each train it can fit about 10 people standing and sitting max along with luggages. read more

I try to avoid using Newark, NJ airport, but sometimes have to as most flights from San Jose to the New York city area are to Newark, NJ. Much easier getting from JFK to midtown Manhattan, as you just use the JFK airtrain and the NYC subway. Using Uber to go from NYC to Newark, NJ is extremely costly-about $90 during the middle of a Sunday afternoon. $10 surcharges for traveling in the Lincoln tunnel, and $25? surcharge for a New York ride share/taxi dropping off passengers at Newark airport. Wife and I used the air train from Newark airport to New York's Penn Central Station once in our last trip here in September. Traveling on the Newark air train is free, compared to $5 per person on the JFK airtrain. It's pretty straightforward given the map diagrams on the light rail cars. The light rail cars are clean and the plastic seats vandal proof. Limited seating, with most people standing. We just follow the signs pointing to trains to New York. We purchase two senior tickets, at $9 each, compared to $13 for people under 65 years of age, at the ticket machines. Expensive paying $13 for a 17 mile trip. An Uber trip from Newark to NYC is around $45, so if you have only 1 or 2 people in your party, it's definitely worth considering going by train, as long as you are traveling light with only carry on luggage. The train to New York at the end of the line Newark air train station is above ground. No signage as to what train goes where, so we followed the crowd. Waited half an hour until the train came on a different track, but fortunately all we had to do was cross over to the other side of the waiting platform. Double decker train, clean, modern, even windows shiny. Don't remember any major stops in between Newark airport and Penn Central. Most of the trip above ground, through the swamp lands of Northern New Jersey, past the New York Giants stadium. You know you're about to arrive at Penn Central as the train goes underground and then into a very darkened maze of tracks. Everyone gets off here, as it is the end of the line. After this, we get off the train, walk a quarter mile and catch the subway for $2.75 each to our timeshare condo at West 57 by Hilton. This was in September. The coronavirus pandemic has changed everything. Everyone who can do so is fleeing the big Apple, spreading the virus to Bergen county New Jersey, and Long Island. Nobody in their right mind is flying into New York City, except desperately needed emergency room doctors and nurses. Can't say enough about the dedication of these medical personnel risking their lives, trying to stem this pandemic. read more

The Air Train is great. This was the first time using it and it worked well. We called the hotel to send their shuttle to pick us up and bring us to our vehicle. I called them while in the terminal and by the time I made it to the Air Train and over to P4 it only took the shuttle about 5 minutes to get there. The train and station were safe. I will definitely use it the next time I travel out of Newark again. read more

I love the Newark Airport AirTrain! Well, providing the A/C is working inside the boxcars! The AirTrain ride is usually when I get amped up about air travel. Here we gooooo!! (Think Super Mario 64) TIPS: NJ TRANSIT To/From: From: * there are two sets of escalators, each with stairs. The UP escalator faces SOUTH * an elevator is between the sets of escalators if you have lots of bags, or are uncomfortable on the escalator * have your ticket qrcode in hand, whether paper or via the app. You will need it to get through the turnstiles * stay to your right, and escalator down to the AirTrain boarding area. * walk ALL the way down to the end. * pick the last boxcar -- you'll get off first and be the first into the terminal * hang on! This thing is automated now, and it jolts! To: * add 12 minutes to your estimated travel from Terminal C, if you're timing a train (landing time + 25 min for baggage + 20 for international arrival) Short Term Parking (P4) This is an awesome and convenient spot to park when you're in a pinch, and cost is no object. Park your car, and the AirTrain is immediately across the street and right above. SO convenient. Rental Cars. Watch out for this one on the return of your car. If you're flying United, you have to go ALL the way around (add 20 minutes to your check-in time) Enjoy! read more

The AirTrain at Newark Airport connects all the terminals with parking facilities and the Newark Airport train station, serviced by NJ Transit and Amtrak. AirTrain is free to ride, and I find it very convenient. One issue is that AirTrain operates outside of TSA Security. So ... to connect between terminals using AirTrain, you have to leave the secure area of one terminal and go back through TSA at the next terminal. read more

Everything in the tri-state travel infrastructure feels like it was designed by a blind Lego master at least a half century ago. Take Newark Liberty's AirTrain... basically it's a monorail that runs between terminals and then dumps you at the the NJ Transit station for a 25 minute ride into NYC's Penn Station (or to points south in New Jersey.) There's nothing wrong with this setup in theory but the Newark Liberty Station is at the northern end of New Jersey's Northeast Corridor line and by the time it gets to EWR, it's crammed with commuters who have already been shoehorned into every seat and exhausted all the overhead space - a third world carnival that makes steerage class in Gdansk look like the Orient Express. It's probably faster than a cab or Uber from the terminal but it's usually a madhouse and a train in vain. Not my favorite alternative by a long shot - unless you prefer sharp elbows and random profanity in every language under the sun. read more

This train is always f@cked up for some reason or another. I've missed more trains and other travel than I want to count due to crappy AirTran. And now there is another cluster mess at terminal C station and the heavy set kid working is giving stank face and acts like we are an inconvenience in asking questions. How are we supposed to guess when the train is, yet again, on a messed up schedule. FYI - now I've missed my connecting train and have to wait another 1.5 hours due to this incompetence. I walked over to air train, bought my $13 one way to NYC Penn station and it was a lot more smoother than waiting for the Newark Airport Echoes bus. The air train is free and first takes you from terminal A to C and then you get off at Rail Link. You can buy your ticket beforehand at the kiosks and it takes credit and cash. After you get off at Rail Link, you cross through to take the New York train and it's only two stops away! Took about an hour and it was more convenient than waiting for a bus and being in traffic. Don't forget it's the NYC Penn station not Newark. Happy public transit traveling! read more

There are a few options to get between terminals and none of them are good ones. I chose to take the AirTrain (outside of security) verse the bus (inside of security) because I hate the bus ride, but found I hate this mode of transportation even more, I only took it because I have pre-check and knew going back through security would be a breeze. This train moves at a snails pace so if you have a tight connection you may want to rethink using this. The pods are extremely small and can get crowded and unless you find a seat (3) per car or find spot against one of the walls with a hand hold don't enter the pod. if you happen to get trapped in the center of the pod you better possess exceptional balancing skills or you will find yourself on your stumbling or in the lap of a stranger there are no bars or straps to hold on to, the jolting during acceleration and deceleration is ridiculous and unsafe. read more

Ok I'm renaming Newark airtrain to Newark airturd, this is by far the worst monorail experience I have ever had and I unfortunately use it almost every day. Forget about any kind of schedule they post or the sign saying a train arrives every 4 min, this is not reality, and if you arrive late into Newark after 11 do yourself a favor and take a cab to Newark Penn station if your heading to NY, if your heading south to Trenton good luck! As far as the train itself it's super small, picture 10 people in your bathroom with luggage! ..now you get the idea, and the air conditioning does not work on all cars so it gets funky real quick in the summer with all the non deodorant wearing Euro trash. Also be prepared to travel at a snail's pace and make random stops in the middle of nowhere. It does serve it's purpose but i must say miserably, if you only use this once or twice a year chances are you might actually have a normal ride, but frequent flyers will know what i'm talking about. I don't tend to fly into Newark International Airport often, but when I do, I inevitably take NJ Transit and then connect to the AirTrain. Compared to similar forms of airport transportation that I've taken at JFK, SFO, or OAK, this train is probably my least favorite. It feels more cramped than the rest, and the small train cars have a limited amount of seating. During my recent trip to EWR, I definitely felt like I was getting "up close and personal" with some of fellow train companions given the limited space. However, it gets me to the airport reliably, and that's the most important part. Tight space and dated design is not the end of the world. If you are taking NJ Transit, remember to keep your NJ Transit ticket so you can get on the AirTrain platform. read more

The seat covers are cool...this is smaller than the JFK Airtrain but I like it. It would be better if the cars were larger though. If you want to take this to the NJ Transit trains to come to New York, look for the machines to buy your train tickets when you disembark. For getting from terminal to terminal or to rental car places, this is an effective method. It beats a shuttle bus any day! read more

Great attempt at making transport into Newark from NYC and all points south. Anything that PATH gets involved in is not a smooth process. Do not attempt to use after hours. There are only 3 trains running and to get into NYC you have to transfer to another Air Train that is not a direct transfer. You have to wait upwards of 10 minutes. Daytime hours it's a smoother process. The train only makes announcements in English. In Singapore Hong Kong and South Korea since international ports the announcements are in multiple languages. The fare is not worth the price charged for the inconvenience experienced off hours. If going to midtown try the express bus as it's a one step process. read more

AirTrain is the best thing about Newark Airport. I flew in w/o using AirTrain for the last time in May 2001. When I came back on another trip in October that year, AirTrain was just opening its connection to the NJ Transit NE Corridor line. Though post-9/11 was a very difficult and sad time for everyone, AirTrain opened up the happy new possibility of traveling through NJ, to NY, and back to Newark Airport completely by train. No more car rentals, no more bouncing down the turnpike in a shuttle bus like a stone skipping along the Delaware and Raritan Canal. Some people get confused by the ticketing process. BEFORE you exit your terminal, cool your personal travel jets long enough to get in line at one of the NJ Transit automated kiosks. Select your final destination station, and pay. The AirTrain ticket price is INCLUDED in your NJ Transit ticket. When you walk out to the overpass, keep in mind that the FIRST set of stairs takes you down to the NORTHEAST-bound tracks (New York), while the SECOND set of stairs takes you down to the SOUTHWEST bound tracks (Jersey shore too, I think). read more

Absolutely terrible- after two months of closure for "maintenance", airtrain still can't manage to do its single stated purpose: moving passengers between terminals and the EWR train station. Often the trains will stay at a station for inexplicably long time, stop in between stations, or worse- in mid-transit, stop and go the reverse direction, sending you BACK to the previous station and forcing you to wait several minutes for the NEXT train going back towards your intended destination in a sort of airport transit purgatory. In off-peak times, missing your train means waiting up to 40 minutes for the next one. Plan at LEAST double the amount of time listed on the website to get between terminals and train stations. read more

It was mobbed and we were all waiting for the same train. Employee had to use a microphone in order get his direct orders across. Not bad-it took me an hour to get from the airplane to penn station in NYC. You pay $12.50 and take the airtrain four stops to rail link, then 3 stops on the amtrak to Penn Station. It's weird how the cars are divided and small, with only 4 seats each. But I guess that works, too. I think taking the train is more reliable (and faster) than taking the bus. I've had friends get stuck on the bus for 3 hours due to heavy traffic. Plus, taking the train is a few bucks cheaper. read more

Fast, convenient, clean and modern looking... what else could you ask for!?!? I used to say to myself... "ahhh, Newark--that airport's way too far for me"... but, really it's not using NJTransit and the AirTrain Network. In fact, it's quite fast and convenient, even if I have to come into Penn Station from Brooklyn Heights to start my journey. My only pet peeve is that I think it's a waste of tax payer money for the AirTrain system to have so many customer service folks standing near the entrance kiosks to tell travelers how to insert their tickets into the turnstile machines. Could they not instead have a system that was a little more intuitive??? And, I saw a lot of NJTransit customers who didn't realize they were supposed to keep their train ticket in order to exit the NJTransit train and enter into AirTrain... there needs to be a system in place to inform customers of this requirement. My advice = bring in an assessment team to evaluate current practices and make recommendations for updating this entire process. There's bound to be a more cost-effective way... maybe they could then reduce the cost of the $12.50 fare and make it more affordable for customers who are traveling!! Just a thought. read more

These trains transport you to Terminals AB n C, and to the regular trains to Penn Station NJ and beyond. I've never understood why the carriages are so tiny - an inefficient use of space. The trains are reasonably frequent but kind of slow. Allow plenty of time especially if you're going to the a station far from where you are. read more
