It's been a while since exercise was a part of my daily routine, so I had some trepidation as a newbie. Most of all, I didn't want another injury. The attention I get from the coaches is not only a confidence booster, but gives me peace of mind that I'm doing it correctly to minimize chance of hurting myself. My wife and I are still kind of new to Carson City, and this has been a great way to meet new friends and become part of the community. It's a really diverse set of people, all ages and backgrounds. There's a running group, biking group, and open gym on Saturdays at 9am is a great combination of morning workout and "donut social," (everyone needs a cheat day!) It's not your typical, "gym-in-a-box." Unlike a lot of others, Axle is not a couple of racks in a shell of an uninsulated building. Everything is new, and the turf center floor is awesome. Floor-to-ceiling windows with beautiful views of the mountains make sunrise yoga sublime. In addition to CrossFit, they also have the aforementioned yoga; women's only Victory classes; "Oly" (Olympic Style Lifting) with Amber (who is a riot!), and the ultimate in functional strength, "Strongman," which is for anyone who wants to move heavy things quickly and safely. It's a lot more than just a gym, you should try it out.

Elite's coaches always create a great workout, and it's been amazing to see how much my fitness has improved over the course of this year. The other gym members are willing to share their knowledge and go slow with you when you're just getting the hang of things, which makes learning feel less intimidating. If you develop a consistent routine at Elite, you're likely to see a lot of the same faces in your classes, which makes it much more approachable and is also a testament to how strong the community is! There are some very dedicated people who work out at Elite, and it's inspiring to see people showing up every day to take care of themselves. Joining Elite is genuinely one of the best things I've done for my physical and mental health. As a facility, it's centrally located in town, which is super convenient. It's always very clean, and there's a huge variety of workout equipment and tools and a boxing ring. Special shoutout to coaches Jarred and Ricky, ass-kicker extrordinaires, and to JB and Oscar, who always make the gym feel like a fun and friendly place to spend some time. Looking forward to another amazing year with Elite in 2026!

I was visiting South Tahoe for vacation and finally decided to train at Escobar Training Grounds (I…read morehad looked them up during previous trips but didn't have the time to train). I called the night before and the receptionist was very friendly and answered all of my questions regarding classes and pricing. I took 3 days of the morning 9:30 am kickboxing class and loved each day! I arrived early the first day to fill out a waiver form and to pay the drop-in fee (plus to get an idea of the gym protocols and layout). Coach Cory met me and gave me a tour of the gym which is very spacious with a full ring, multiple heavy bags, a speed bag, BJJ mat, and the open mat area (where kickboxing classes are held). Lots of area to store your gear - cubicles vs lockers - and clean bathrooms and changing areas. As for the class, it is beginner-friendly (there was a guy there who has only trained for a week) but also great for intermediate and seasoned martial artists. I have trained in Muay Thai for 18 months at a Bay Area gym (American kickboxing is different yet I felt completely safe and welcome at ETG). I was the solo female each day and each of my training partners (from the new student to the competitive fighters) were respectful (ie no huge egos or machismo which I have experienced at other gyms; worked at my level but still challenged me; did not go full power but increased it if I encouraged them to; no crazy bruises or injuries that I have gotten from other "overzealous" training partners at other gyms) and very patient (I had to learn each person's rhythm and flow with their combos and also new kickboxing techniques but I never felt rushed/judged). The best part: they were genuinely friendly - said hi to me and welcomed me to the gym; chatted with me and gave me some great recommendations for food and sight seeing; and even remembered my name each day. Ladies, do not be intimidated to try this gym out - it is a safe and welcoming environment and each of the guys especially Coach Cory will watch out for you! The only heads up: you will get the most out of your training here if you know how to hold Thai pads. if you've never used them, don't worry - Coach and the guys can teach you as you train. The class is NOT a fitness/dance cardio kickboxing type class (ie high energy music with everyone throwing the same combos and/or kicks that are choreographed) - it's legit martial arts training. You will learn attacking combos, defensive moves, and will train punches, kicks, teeps, and knees. The catch: you call out combos as a pad holder for your partner for an entire round and you rotate partners; then you switch to being the "attacker". I had a blast learning new punch combos and fakes that I haven't learned in Muay Thai. Very fun because you work mentally and physically! And, ladies, this type of training is self-defense - yes, you'll get in crazy good shape BUT more importantly, you'll learn how to punch and kick properly and effectively to protect yourself if need be! Thank you again to Coach Cory and the 9:30 am kickboxing crew! I can't wait to train with you guys again the next time I'm in Tahoe!

Longer review for those with time to read :) I have been dying to find a place like this near me and stumbled upon it while on vacation. I was visiting North Star with friends and as a group fitness junkie, I signed up for the week-long pass at TMF. I was welcomed warmly by Holly, the co-owner. She gave me the perfect little orientation with zero sales pitch, made me feel right at home, and then she jumped right into teach our class. I took Lower Body Strength, Body Pump, HITT and Core Strength over a few days and wished I could stay longer to try more, including the immersive spin class (think spin bikes in front of a movie screen - how cool). I also did a body composition analysis with Holly and wish I had time to use the infrared sauna. Virginia and Holly taught the classes I took. I really appreciate how much time Virginia spent with me to ensure I was lifting properly during HIIT (which was awesome and challenging!). Everyone was super friendly, including the class regulars. It can be intimidating to walk into a new gym and try to merge into group fitness, but everyone made me feel right at home. I will go back every time I'm in North Lake Tahoe.
