Your kid will want the instruction, which is how Carson ATA gets you in the door. But how they get you to stay, is that they offer more than just a class containing instruction and your typical respect-based techniques of martial arts on tap for the taking. They offer to the parents a system of keeping the kids interested in being better kids. For a short part of the 50 minute class, parents get to stand up and explain how the kids did on meeting a certain goal (perhabs to be more respectful or in whatever way to be better kids). In front of the entire group, the kids are cheered on by the dojo about whatever little thing was hard for the kid to do at home over the course of the week. These skills in motivating kids to respect their parents is incredible. Why? Because these skills are taught by the same dojos who teach your kid how to fight and how to protect the child against attackers, which is what the kid really wants. So for every future black belt in the making, you get a child that is primarily concerned with doing the best he can at home, for you, so he gets to come back and learn to spar and grapple and use the equipment. A smarter business model there has never been. My kids are already wanting to go back. And I have a super hard kid that hates everything, plus is incredibly shy. In fact, I was very defeated at first that my child didn't want to participate over the first 30 minutes. But by the end of class, with some very clever motivation from the dojo, all the kids welcomed my child (who was probably feeling very uncomfortable being un-wallflowered) and got her on the floor and eventually she was doing some moves with the others and having a good time. They really want to come back. I actually hope my children become black belts. I can see this really working out.

He has always been a shy boy and was extremely nervous to start jiu jitsu. Jack was patient with him and let him come in to watch to get used to seeing the kids practice, he even offered to have my son come in for a one on one training session to build his confidence before starting to train with the other kids. The prices are affordable and my son looks forward to coming here. All the coaches know what they are doing, and while sometimes stern to enforce respect and discipline, they are very friendly and comforting to the kids. I was visiting North Star with friends and as a group fitness junkie, I signed up for the week-long pass at TMF. I was welcomed warmly by Holly, the co-owner. She gave me the perfect little orientation with zero sales pitch, made me feel right at home, and then she jumped right into teach our class. I took Lower Body Strength, Body Pump, HITT and Core Strength over a few days and wished I could stay longer to try more, including the immersive spin class (think spin bikes in front of a movie screen - how cool). I also did a body composition analysis with Holly and wish I had time to use the infrared sauna. Virginia and Holly taught the classes I took. I really appreciate how much time Virginia spent with me to ensure I was lifting properly during HIIT (which was awesome and challenging!). Everyone was super friendly, including the class regulars. It can be intimidating to walk into a new gym and try to merge into group fitness, but everyone made me feel right at home. I will go back every time I'm in North Lake Tahoe.

Theres so much care put into everything they do, it gives me pride and I have a lot of gratitude to be under their training. I leave every class with a great sense of accomplishment. Even after a couple of months, my progress has shown. During that visit, one of the coaches, Javi, made comments that were completely inappropriate for an adult in a position of trust. He told my daughter she "fights like a ghetto Black girl," which is an unacceptable and offensive remark to make to any child. He then had my 13-year-old daughter call me on the phone. During that interaction, he asked her to show him my social media pictures and told her he wanted me to have his babies. I have never met this man in my life. When I gave him no attention, he reportedly told my daughter, "Tell her never mind. She looks like she's an attention-seeking mother." I cannot understand why an adult coach would involve a minor in a personal conversation about her mother or make comments like these to a child. Coaches are supposed to mentor, encourage, and create a safe environment not put children in the middle of inappropriate personal interactions. I sincerely hope UFC Gym Reno takes this complaint seriously and investigates what happened. Parents should be able to trust that their children are in a safe, respectful, and professional environment.
