This is a very difficult review to write, as I have been a patient of Eric and Nob Hill Community Acupuncture since at least 2015. I have been receiving acupuncture since I was 13. I graduated from massage therapy school in 1998, and practiced massage until eventually going back to school for a bachelors, and then a Master's in Social Work. I share this, since I want it to be known that I do not take these words I'm about to share lightly whatsoever. During most of 2020 (The Height of the Pandemic), I did not attempt to visit "NHCA". After encountering Bell's palsy in March of 2021, I decided to reconsider NHCA for follow-up care. There was a time when I would visit NHCA at least twice a week. It was evident that things at NHCA had changed in terms of how business was being handled during the pandemic. This included temperature checks, etc. It was my impression that if a person was ill, they could not be seen. I was impressed to see the care Eric was taking. Recently, I made an appointment on a Thursday or Friday for the following Monday in the afternoon. I became ill over the weekend and when Monday came around, I rescheduled the appointment made for Monday at 1:30 to Thursday at 11:30 AM around 8:30 in the morning on that Monday. Unfortunately, I was still unable to attend this appointment on Thursday morning due to being ill, and made every effort to cancel the appointment as early as possible, which was when I woke up at around 7:19 AM. Around 11:30AM, I received TWO invoices from NHCA for $43.00 totaling nearly $86.00 in cancellation fees. I attempted to reach out to Eric via email after receiving these invoices, where he was less than compassionate, furthermore, he provided inaccurate information stating the second appointment was canceled "less than 2 hours" before the appointment at 11:30. I followed up with an email screen-shooting the actual cancellation time and did not receive any additional follow-up. I guess this is how patients of 6 years are treated? It would be different if this was a habit of mine as a patient for the past 6 years of patronage. However, it was not. Granted, I was unaware of his cancellation policies, in addition to this not being a habitual practice of mine (certainly he would have addressed such behavior within 6 years), this certainly broke any kind of trust between a patient and their helper or "healer". The nature in which he reacted instead of responding to the situation was completely excessive, even if he was attempting to "make a point". What started out as a "community acupuncture" space encouraging greater access to healing and welcoming to the LGBTQI community, has now turned into something else. Something else that Eric should be able to be more honest about and change the overall business approach and mission. The "sliding scale" has increased significantly over the years and the constant threats to eliminate them all together is not "community acupuncture," rather, it's a private practice model where a practitioner sets their own rigid rules and policies. This is completely fine, as every business owner has a right to run their business how they see fit, and so lets call it what is then. In his email to me, he stated that it "wasn't about the money." And, well, clearly it has and always will be "about the money." I've observed Eric being more than accommodating and friendly to those white-cis patients who perhaps pay higher on the sliding scale, even forgetting to take needles out of me so that he could engage in long conversations with these clients, leaving me there just waiting to be tended too. Clearly I let these experiences slide, since the therapeutic relationship was more important to me at the time. As a transgender woman of color and small business owner, I understand the frustrations of clients canceling appointments. And, as a trans woman of color, I'm also keen enough to know when someone is being "extra" excessive with their punishments, it's borderline oppressive and not at all "healing". When in his zone and truth, Eric is an exceptional practitioner that is capable of providing exceptional care and attention when he wants to. I'm very saddened that the business model and practices have become so oppressive and punishing in nature, and that truly damages any therapeutic relationship. I don't believe I could ever return here or in good faith, encourage others to come here as well. read more

I write this review with a bit of hesitancy. I am a practitioner of traditional medicine and I'm well versed in ethics. Reading the large amount of positive reviews and only finding one negative review is being taken into consideration. That being said, I feel it's my responsibility to express my feelings about what occurred during my first visit at NHCA. When I arrived at his office, we met in his front receiving room. He was a bit hyperactive and seemed friendly. He referred to himself as a healer multiple times. This is a personal opinion of mine. As a practitioner, I strongly disagree with anyone calling themselves a healer. Being educated on the ethics surrounding naming oneself. It's only for other people to call you by that title, you do not get to name yourself a healer. I also believe in the power of self healing, the practitioner is merely a conduit. The person receiving therapeutic treatments is the only healer in the situation. I kept my opinion on the subject to myself. ******* Trigger warning......*********** After a lengthy conversation and completing the initial evaluation, we went to the back treatment room. One other client was present. Before my treatment began, Eric attended to the client and brought her treatment to a close. He walked back to the area where I was waiting. He checked my pulses before placing the needles. He used both auricular acupuncture and points throughout my body. This combination was excessive being that both were being done at the same time, I had shared with Eric that I had not received an acupuncture treatment in over a year due to the Covid pandemic. Here's the experience I am very disappointed in, I was alone with Eric in his building. I had never met him before this moment. I was laying down, fully reclining with needles already placed in my body. Eric was taking about issues he has seen with other female clients and he mentioned women who have been rapped. I understand bringing this up if it's pertaining to something at hand or adding to our conversation. That was not the case in this situation. He was the only one initiating talks about rape. He kept repeating himself to me. I was made to be incredibly uncomfortable after the fourth or fifth time he mentioned this. I thought to myself we are all alone in this building, nobody knows I am here and I am very unfamiliar with this person. I was made increasingly uncomfortable as he kept mentioning that we were alone and that it was odd to not be fully booked. Then my ethics training came in to view. I observed the situation, I was laying down and he was standing up above me. He was already in a position of authority and an imbalance of power was already occurring. I know with out a doubt that mentioning rape in this situation was unexpected and unethical of him. I was so incredibly uncomfortable in his presence. I just wanted to leave and or hope another client would arrive so that we weren't alone together. No one showed up! I decided it was best that I leave and pay for my appointment. As I was getting ready to leave a client walked in, I felt a bit better. I paid for my treatment and reevaluated the experience I had just endured. Eric did not physically violate me, he just freaked me out. My adrenaline was running and I was thankful it was over. I hope I'm truly wrong about who he is. I hope this was a mistake on his end and that it wasn't intentional. I will NEVER GO BACK either way. My hesitation comes from not being acquainted with Eric and not being familiar with his personality traits. My certainty about his unethical behavior is not in question. Where the two intersect is the issue I'm having. read more

I just turned 50 and have had acupuncture since I was in my twenties. Chicago, New York, Seattle, Northern California, I have had great experiences at all of these places. However, Eric is really special. His treatments take effect much more quickly, and he always revives me (usually from being tired and stressed out). I'm noticing more long term improvements as I've been going to him. I've been battling sleep problems, a cough that won't quit and bad fatigue since I moved to Albuquerque, and everything has greatly improved. Eric is also a total sweetie. I have been going to Eric for 8 years and have always found him to be courteous and helpful. I went to him for my monthly treatment and at the end of the treatment while I was paying him he proceeded to verbally assault me. I really don't know why since we had never discussed politics or religion. He starts telling me things about President Trump that were horrible. I couldn't figure out why all of sudden he was telling me all this. I will always support our President whether he likes it or not. It was obvious that he was wanting to trash Trump no matter what. I considered this as a verbal assault and very unprofessional. I will not be going back to see him and will not recommend him anymore to anyone. So sad. read more

He also cares about you as an individual and always asks very genuinly about your life. Clearly he has helped many people. I begin going to Nob Hill Community Acupuncture after severe migraines and nausea had me very ill and incapicitated. I seen my primary care doctor, had been to the emergency room and even seen a neurologist with no relief for the migraines. After only 3 sessions with Eric I never experienced a migraine again. Recently I was involved in a car accident and have returned to Eric. Already I am feeling relief and am so greatful I don't have to worry about the red tape of insurance at his practice and can pay what I can afford as I have needed lots of medical care following the accident. Eric has said, "Sometimes we are up and other times we are not." This made me feel comfortable and accepted when I had to give a smaller payment and was embarassed because of it. I went to Eric at Nob Hill Community Acupuncture after a recommendation from another acupuncturist who sees him. I had been badly mishandled by a different therapist who thought she knew what I needed better than I did, even as I communicated pain and discomfort. Eric was the repair of trust for me of that kind of inappropriate behavior. Eric took time during the initial consultation to explore any issues and explain how he would perform the procedure. The room was comfortable and soothing adding to the relaxation and healing process. Before the needles went in Eric told me he would check on me every 15 minutes, but he didn't check on me once. I felt fine until the last 15 or 20 minutes when I became VERY agitated and uncomfortable. My bladder felt instantly full and very painful as if I had been on a long road trip and holding It for hours. It was mostly dark in the room and as it is a community acupuncture center there was another person being treated in the same room. I didn't want to disturb them, I looked around and tried to make contact by waving my arms around in case he was in the next room and could see me but he didn't appear...I did some deep breathing and waited trying to hold it together, hoping he would come along and maybe he was just busy with another patient or at the front desk but still he did not appear. By now the pressure on my bladder was excruciating. I began to have severe anxiety (which was one of the reasons I was there in the first place and which he was aware of) but still he didn't come. As a last resort I verbally called out for him, not loudly or obnoxiously. Just quietly said " hello" a couple of times. He still didn't appear. I finally gave up. I could not take the discomfort any longer. I slowly and carefylly sat up and began taking the tiny needles out myself. In my panicked state I stuck 4 of them into the massage table I was being treated on without thinking. At that moment he hurriedly came into the room very annoyed that I was putting needles into his table. Not concerned or apologetic, just rude. I was in tears at this point. He asked me what the problem was and I simply said " you left me too long". He patted me on the back briskly and said "it wasn't that long." As soon as the needles were out of me I rushed to the bathroom to relieve my bladder and to dress. I went into the waiting room where he was sitting at his desk. He didn't want my money he said. He said I didn't seem happy. I asked him why he didn't check on me, he said he did. I said I called out for him and he said "I was watching you" and all he kept saying over and over about me calling out for him was that he had other patients and that it was rude of me to make any noise, but not once did he say he didn't hear me. He then proceeded chew me out about the four tiny holes I had put in his table, so much so that I left apologizing to him! He was unapoligetic, unprofessional, and had zero compassion. read more
