Um, lots of the them. - His curriculum is as flexible as you need it to be. Not just from a course load, but maybe you got your ass kicked at work that day, and don't want to work super hard on verb tenses: He will adjust to your goals and your emotional needs that week, that day, that moment. - Homework is dependent on you, he can assign or not assign: it depends on what you want. - The schedule can be flexible. Travel a lot? Got personal stuff? He can work around it. - His teaching style is thorough, thoughtful, and useful. There isn't a single session that feels like fluff or wasted time. And even after an hour or so, your brain is still ready for more. I started at once a week. Then went to twice a week. And if I could've found the time, I would've done three times as week. The Bad: - Dino is a giant presence. Literally. People want to stare at him. It'll put you in the spotlight. You will meet people and interact. You may have to put your new skills to the test. Buen suerte, mijo. - Your friends will be jealous that you are kicking their ass with your new language. It's ok, you deserve the kudos. - You will go to every taqueria in SF and order in Spanish. Locals might hate you for that. Or love you. Kinda depends. I little knowledge is dangerous. - You may fall in love. Go find out why. Seriously, Dino is an animal with languages. A strong, understanding beast who will help you with a thoughtful program, designed for your needs. Get to it.

Which means your lesson isn't going to be some dry textbook-style drone. It's going to be as colorful as Dino himself. To top this off, Dino is kind of a language genius so his immense intelligence and understanding of the ins and outs will be gifted to you in the hour sessions. Bonus! He meets most students at Cafe Flore so you can have a glass of wine which loosens the tongue for those who find it tied. Dino has also started teaching Spanish classes for our restaurant employees which has been such a boon for an industry where language is what creates the gulf between front and back of the house. So whether you want individual lessons or a group class, Dino is the man.

She…read moreis kind, patient, and incredibly supportive, which makes learning Mandarin feel encouraging instead of intimidating. She is incredibly resourceful --whether it's tailoring lessons to my goals (conversational, ordering food, asking for directions), finding creative ways to explain tricky grammar, or sharing practical tips for real-world conversation, she always make sure students walk away with a deeper understanding, lots of practice time with each other, and had fun while doing it by focusing on topics that interests them or gamifying the lessons. She even wrote her own book series based on her experiences of what works best with young children and teens. Kyle balances professionalism with genuine warmth, so every session feels both productive and enjoyable. Despite my daughter's crazy schedule with sports, music, school activities, teacher Kyle always finds a way to be flexible and accommodate our needs. My daughter is now in high school and of course chose mandarin as her language of study because of the fun and support she received from teacher Kyle. If you're looking for a mandarin teacher who is not only skilled but also truly invested in your success, look for teacher Kyle!

She's been a wonderful teacher and makes learning Chinese a fun and enjoyable experience. She's friendly, engaging, and always has such positive energy. I'm so glad we found her! Kyle Laoshi uses a variety of games and activities to keep the class interesting, and she's so good at motivating my kids with fun digital prizes that they talk about with each other like they're real. ;] They like working from the printouts she provides, and they love how she shares funny personal stories related to the content they're learning. The class is a quick 30 minutes which works great for our busy schedule. Kyle makes efficient use of time in each session. The pace is just right and my kids are focused and engaged the whole time. Kyle is able to get them to chat conversationally in Chinese and participate often in each class. Our classes are usually a mix of native and non-native speakers, as well as kids of different ages. Kyle takes a lot of time before each new semester to make sure each student is placed in the best class for them. I highly recommend Kyle Laoshi as a Chinese teacher. She's a great fit for kids of all ages and skill levels, and she's always willing to work with you to find the best class for your child's needs. I'd recommend doing more than one class per week if your schedule allows, as we've found that both a conversational and a read/write class can provide a well-rounded learning experience. If you're looking for a dedicated, talented, and fun-loving teacher, Kyle is the one!

Firstly, Hola Kids provided a welcoming and nurturing environment for my son to grow in. I was even able to create a small but mighty "village" with the parents of my son's peers. Secondly, after my son suffered a stroke at the end of 2023, the Hola Kids team went above & beyond in helping my son with his recovery. The staff made several accommodations for my son and helped him recover physically and helped me recover emotionally. After all the time, resources, and love that Hola Kids poured into my son and myself - I can truly say that this organization feels like family to me. I am forever grateful and will always hold the entire staff in my heart. I would absolutely recommend Hola Kids to any family that is looking for nurturing, safe, welcoming, supportive, and knowledgeable childcare. Hola Kids helped me to build a solid foundation for my son's development and growth. GRACIAS, Hola Kids, por TODO!!!

The teachers are super friendly and empathetic towards our daughter, and she seems to love all the activities, such as painting, playing outside, singing and dancing, and there's lots of toys. She's never gotten injured and she's made about 4-5 good friends and is starting to get invited to birthday parties and play dates. It's a very positive experience for her and now she gets so excited when it's a "school night" and she gets to see her friends the next day. I also love that she's exposed to Spanish, as it's technically a Spanish immersion pre-school. Given she's just now learning language in general, I believe it will be very useful for her brain to start comprehending multiple languages, so that later in life it's far easier for her to be multilingual. Though one thing I find interesting is that the kids still speak English to each other, and our daughter will come home from school with lots of English phrases she picked up... from all her friends! But she does sing some songs in Spanish, and she's better at counting in Spanish than English, she does the alphabet in Spanish, and she likes to boss us around using Spanish words now. So that's pretty cute and interesting. But so far I haven't seen her have a conversation with someone in Spanish, though she's pretty conversational with us with English at home. Overall I think Hola Kids is a great experience for kids and I'd recommend it for other families looking for a fun pre-school with a language immersion component.

They come home excited to teach me the new words and phrases they've learned, and I'm constantly amazed by their progress. As a family with no Chinese language background, we were amazed when my 5-year-old scored 100% on his Chinese proficiency test after only 7 months of learning. His second choice public school was for a Chinese immersion program, but the assessor was so impressed that she's moving him to the native speaker program instead. This is a testament to the incredible teaching and dedication of the staff. Fun with Mandarin beautifully balances language learning with cultural activities. My kids especially love the artwork component and are always eager to show me what they've created each day. The teachers foster not just language skills but a genuine love of Chinese culture. I only wish Fun with Mandarin extended all the way to high school because we'd stay enrolled in a heartbeat! If you're looking for a Mandarin program where your children will thrive and actually enjoy learning, this is it. Highly recommend!

Led by Bin Bin & Ben, the team of teachers have helped our kids grow up -- from potty training to playing to navigating interpersonal conflicts. But what's been most gratifying has been their growth and immersion in Mandarin and Chinese culture. Our daughter comes home singing songs, showing off new vocabulary, and telling us about things she learned about Chinese holidays. They've helped our kids learn how to speak with fluency based in everyday life, not something academic and rote. Heritage feels like it can be harder to maintain and preserve than ever, so we feel like we've given our kids an irreplaceable foundation where Chinese culture is fun, interesting, exciting. Bin Bin & Ben are incredibly communicative, providing all parents daily updates about curriculum, delightful photos of what the kids are up to, and direct messages about individual needs. We always feel like we know what's happening. As parents themselves, they're also incredibly supportive and helpful in navigating the complexities of SFUSD and getting into kindergarten. The parent community has also been wonderful, giving us a close-knit group of friends and playmatesz. Highly recommended for any families looking for a Mandarin immersion program for their young ones.

My daughter is in the sixth grade and pretty much a straight A student, except for math. She began slipping behind this past semester and was getting a C in math. This stressed her out far more than me however I convinced her and myself that we could tackle this together. That was until I learned the hard way that this common core BS it literally the most confusing math I have ever encountered. We gave it a week of me trying to teach myself and then her. And then another week of me getting absolutely frustrated. And then by the end of the second week I threw in the towel and started searching for tutors. Initially I was set on getting her a private tutor like I had done for my son 8 years prior. To my surprise and horror? Private tutors were running upward of $140 for an hour of in home tutoring. Ok. They make more than I do. I then decided that was insane and I switched gears settling on Sylvan at West Portal. The start up was pain free, she had her assessment and then headed full steam ahead with the small group math tutoring 2 days per week. There was only 2 months of school left, she had a C- in math going into it and finished the semester with a solid B. The best part of all was the confidence boost she got along with that B. The staff at Sylvan were friendly, easy to communicate with and never tried to push packages on us that we didn't need. Her assessment was so helpful in that it picked up area's where she needed help that she didn't know she even needed help in. The prices were very competitive and although I was hoping to get her the 1:1 tutoring I was limited by the cost and reassured that she would likely do just as well with the small groups. They were correct. There was not a single tutor that Lily did not click with. They were all patient and kind providing updates along the way with her progress. It was all around a great experience and she will definitely return for the math homework group in the Fall. I would recommend Sylvan to anyone who's child is falling behind in a subject and needs a boost. The money spent was well worth it and my girl went into the summer feeling great about herself and her grades.
