No longer tourists but ever grateful for however AB has informed, influenced or subliminally cajoled our collective psyches. We have not been to this specific restaurant yet so in the spirit of equal opportunity for all of them we decided to give it a try. Specifically this one has a large outdoor terrace that is very long and accommodating for outdoor dining. Started its large prawns the octopus and finally he grilled red snapper. What a great meal to celebrate our one year anniversary of permanently moving to Portugal. Estava com vontade de comer peixe grelhado! Ordered 1/2 dose of sardines (6-7 pieces) and the monkfish and rice. I was blown away at how good the sardines were with the crispy salty skin. I honestly thought I'd have one piece and then be done but I couldn't stop eating it. The monkfish was a huge bowl filled with shrimp also and was made for sharing between 2-4 people. We had lunch on the sidewalk, inside a really cool enclosure (to keep the smoke from the grill from overtaking us). We all shared plates that included octopus, grilled sardines, grilled salmon and grilled salted cod. For our sides we had butter boiled potatoes, a large salad, and sauteed cabbage. For dessert, we had the Creme Brulee that was finished on the grill!! The food was terrific with the cod and sardines being the absolute best. The salmon steak was good, but slightly overcooked. The octopus salad was a delicious pairing. It is the first time I have ever seen Creme Brulee finished on a charcoal grill; it was a great show to watch and the taste and texture was fantastic. I must mention our server Daniel who was attentive and incredibly funny. He kept us laughing during a long lunch that we are certain cut into his personal time (between lunch and dinnertime). When the mains came, I tried the squid ink pasta first - it was beautiful and buttery. I wouldn't normally order octopus, but that's what the dish came with and it was the top recommend from our friend's friend. The octopus was cooked decently, but I've definitely had it more tender. And then I tried the bacalhau pasta.... The pasta was made in house, the broth that it came with along with the richness of the tomatoes and the saltiness of the bacalhau was just heavenly. I'm going to be thinking about that dish for a long time - it was unique and just absolutely unforgettable and delicious. Its patio has a direct view towards Porto's scenic Douro River. We came for lunch and were immediately seated on the 2nd floor of the restaurant beside a lobster & crab tank, overlooking the kitchen. The menu featured local seafood dishes including the Salt Crusted Seabass often set ablaze with fire. Our Garlic Shrimp (€10.50) came out hot and fragrant, conveniently de-shelled but with shrimp heads kept for the rich tomalley. We were quite familiar with this shrimp sauce profile, which made for a tasty dip with the sliced toasts. We followed this with piping hot Shellfish Rice (€25), a rich, hearty classic main course in a tomato base with loads of clams, mussels and shrimp. The portion in the stone pot was huge and filled a good 4-5 bowls. Initially we planned for dessert. But upon seeing a nearby family enjoy barnacles, we felt more adventurous and opted for this local delicacy too. At 200g for €12, we were served a large plate of boiled barnacles which were still briny and ocean-fresh from the Portuguese coast. Twisting off the leathery skin of gooseneck barnacle actually reveals meat similar to clam. It was fun and messy with seawater squirting in the process. The bustling restaurant felt relaxed, and by the time our first dish arrived there was a steady stream of local diners and expats beside us. The service was quite friendly although slightly overwhelmed by serving all of the nearby tables. Skip it or hit it?
