I've been using this pet clinic for around 11 years. Dr. Amos is the best! He's well versed in not only the medical care, but also in animal behavior. He's helped me with mistakes I was making with my dogs that I didn't even know about. His advice is spot on. I love that he's a plain talker, cut to the chase, no frills. I have read every Yelp review to date. All of the positives are most definitely true and accurate, so I'm not going to reiterate them again except to underscore the fact that Dr. Amos has--on many occasions over the years--responded to my panicked emails WELL outside of work hours!!! A good portion of the negative reviews seem to be attributable to personality/personal chemistry, which is always going to be a factor in any human interactions and, as such, needs to be taken with a 'grain of salt'. (Additionally, Dr. Parks--who BTW was also wonderful with my dogs--left NPC years ago.) Dr. Amos comes to the rescue again for Mila and the best part is I left the house and walked over at 8:15 for our 8:30am appt. No jumping in the car and loading up the pooch. A short walk and we're there. If you live in and around Lake Nokomis & Hiawatha, this is, as advertised "The Neighborhood Pet Clinic". Dr. Amos is very thorough but gets to the point quickly. You can tell he loves animals but doesn't coddle them. He's like a battlefield surgeon, he gets them patched up and back on the frontlines to sniff things, chase balls or meow and lay in the sun. He's direct in a professional way and knows his stuff. If you want someone in a sing-song voice to ask: "How's Mr. Fuzzy Wuzzy Wuzzles, doing today?...can Mr. Wuzzles open his mouth?" Then Dr. Amos is not your vet, but if you want a vet you can trust who will clearly diagnose and treat your animal in a respectful way then you have come to the right place. He will not run unnecessary tests just to pad his bottom line. And from my previous vet experiences, it seems this is standard procedure at some large chain vets. He also won't charge you an arm and a leg either for the visit, treatment, or prescriptions. I was encouraged to switch vets and give Nokomis Pet Clinic a try and both Mila (2 yr old Wire Fox Terrier) and my wife and I have been extremely happy that we did. I call BS on this place- or at least for Dr. Parks, anyway. If you have a cat steer clear of her. It looks like you should request Dr. Amos, in that case. I went in with my kitty who had had some trouble with his teeth in the past. I had had another vet mention that there was a problem (Odontoclastic Resorption-pretty common I guess). I wanted a diagnosis that could confirm the initial observation and a place that could treat the problem. Dr. Parks came in and took about 10 minutes to look at the cat. She was pretty indifferent about the whole thing, not really responding to anything I was saying. Afterwards, she told me that they didn't offer treatment services at this clinic and that I could go get treatment at a couple of different places--she recited them--and said that that was about all she could do. So, I paid 50 dollars for Dr. Parks to tell me she couldn't help me. And nary a smile or even much of a look at my feline companion. In other words: I paid 50 bucks for her to look at my cat for 10 minutes and send me on my way. To tell the truth, she seemed a bit distant and not really into cats. I've brought my guy into several other vets who just immediately pick him up and give him love. But who knows? Maybe she was having a bad day. I've been here three times now and seen both vets. Both were great with me and my pet. Dr. Amos listened attentively and the treatment plan for some tricky diagnosis is spot on. I'm happy to make another appointment. I'd give more stars but I'm having troubles getting past the front desk reception. The older woman has been really unfriendly every time. She doesn't look up to great me or my pet. If she's doing something she'll just continue while we wait for her. I don't mind the wait but acknowledge (eye contact, smile, wink) the two living breathing creatures that just entered your space and let me know you'll be with me in a minute. The entire VCA operation had given me such a headache that I actually started driving to a vet north of St. Cloud for my dogs. I don't know, their constant need to upsell left me feeling like I was purchasing a microwave and not caring for my pets. But that drive required planning and dogs don't exactly let you know when they expect to get sick, know what I mean? I am completely and totally happy with my choice to go to Nokomis. There is no bullshit, I'm actually listened to and my dogs love it there. Vets are always going to be expensive so I think it's kind of pointless to critique one on cost, but, I don't need to eat ramen for a month after a visit here and I appreciate that. Last week I woke up to my cat howling, with a bloody face. We have no clue what happened to him, but it was clear that he needed to go to the vet. Since the reviews of Nokomis Pet Clinic were so great, we decided to take him there. My dad had a really great experience with the staff here. I just moved back to the midwest after spending 5 years out in Lake Tahoe, CA - my dog Dexter had an ear sore that just wasn't healing, so I started researching vets in the general area, and chose Nokomis Pet Clinic because of the great reviews - and I couldn't be happier with my choice!! Dr. Amos is my vet for both of my beloved kitties and I wouldn't have it either way. It is a small vet but they do big things. He's great and his prices are awesome. I've also had a few emergencies (kitty broke a vase and had a horrible cut on her arm) and he handled them really well. I really like how he takes the time to explain the problem. The best thing is that he doesn't run a million tests unless he has to. That is huge because this is how you go bankrupt if you bring your pets to the vet. Dr. Amos is probably the most caring vet in the cities. So much so that he totally will not eat your dog. That said, when I first brought my dog to him he picked him up and was doing an examination. He looked at me and said "I'm going to have to put your dog down!" I was furious. I asked him why and he said "because he's really heavy." After that he suggested that my dog needed exercise. I asked him if he had any good suggestions. He told me that I should play "fetch" with him. The only problem is, my dog doesn't know how to throw a ball. Dr. Amos was actually recommended to me from a neighbor when we moved to South Minneapolis. I'm very, very happy she told us so. We've been there only a handful of times but when there was an emergency on a weekend, we actually emailed him and commented on the facebook page for help. He responded with advice on what to do immediately. That type of service cannot be bought. We've never been "recommended" to do tests unless it's absolutely necessary. We asked him if we should put our dog on the raw food diet. Dr. Amos said, well, if your dog is a healthy weight and doesn't overeat, don't change. My best friend in college is a vet student and he brought his dogs to Dr. Amos saying, well, "there isn't a wait and I'm in and out quickly." I plan on telling everyone I know to go there. read more

I opened a Yelp account just so I could review Nokomis Pet Clinic! Dr. Amos is so great with my cat, Gus! This is the only vet I have every brought Gus to, because I love it and would never want to switch vets. Dr. Amos takes a GENUINE interest in Gus every time we come in. He treats him as unique and special and not just another animal. I never feel that we are just one out of 25 patients he will see in a day. And as I said, his interest is GENUINE. It's not put on or faked because he knows he's "supposed to" take a special interest in my cat...it's very real and sincere. Dr. Amos pays attention to my cat as an individual. For example, instead of just saying he should be beneath 13lbs because that's a good guideline, he feels Gus's belly and bone structure, looks at him thoroughly, and THEN determines what a healthy weight for HIM would be. He also answers any questions I have very thoroughly and with care...taking time to TEACH me instead of just TELL me. I know Dr. Amos sees many, many, many different animals in a day, week, month, and year, but Gus is my baby and Dr. Amos treats him as just as important as I think he is. read more

He does not believe in over-medicating or over-vaccinating animals, and he'll be really up front with you about that if you're just going to him. I wasn't sure I liked this vet. I thought he was abrupt and maybe accusatory in the care of our pet. I work in healthcare where there is lots of warm and fuzziness all around. I guess I thought a vet would be like that too. As a side note, my husband always was fine with the vet, so certainly my own hang-up. We've taken the cat there a few times. The last visit was literally the last. After 20 years, it was time for him to be euthanized. Dr. Amos knew the time was near, so when my husband walked in without an appointment, he helped him immediately. He was professional and explained the entire process to my husband. A few days later, we received a sympathy card in the mail from him and his staff. How awesome is that!? I'm sure we'll get another pet in a few months, and will definitely be taking the pet to Dr. Amos. And, by the way, I've never thought his prices were out of line. He's very reasonable. read more

This truly is a neighbohood clinic for me. After a terrible experience at a VCA "chain" hospital, I was very pleased to find an independent, local vet who knows his business. The service aspect is phenomenal. I have never had to wait more than a few minutes. I have received very clear answers to questions over e-mail, something I would not expect but very much appreciate. The rates are definitely affordable. As other reviewers have mentioned, unnecessary tests are not run, your treatment options are laid out for you and you are not pressured into unnecessary procedures. This does not mean he is lax, when I described a complaint that he thought was serious, he had me bring my dog in right then. I was there in twenty minutes! The only real issue I have is that we do not see eye to eye on my dog's diet. I feed them raw, they have been thriving on it. He is not really in favor of a raw diet. Thus, if I do have issues related to diet, I cannot count on the fact that he is educated enough in this aspect of their care to give me clear and unbiased advice. Other than that, he is my "go to" vet for all of my dog's routine veterinary care. read more

We started bringing our two dogs to Nokomis because it was local and at first we found it refreshing that Dr. Amos took a less is more approach. The vet techs there are also very nice and friendly with our dogs. However, anything more than routine checkups is not worth it. In one case we brought our dog to the emergency clinic because Nokomis Pet Clinic wasn't open. The next day Dr. Amos looked at the results and we described our dogs symptoms. He gave us some antibiotics and told us to wait and see what happened. Luckily we decided to get a second opinion and we are glad be did because our dog was diagnosed with a serious disease. Our other dog was having an issue and Dr. Amos misdiagnosed it. We again took our dog to another clinic and they immediately did the correct test and put her on an antibiotic and it cleared up in a couple of weeks. I would try to find a vet that has a team of Doctors to keep each other check, has more services readily available and open on weekends. read more

I've taken my cat to this clinic for years and have found Dr. Amos to be very caring and very knowledgeable. I'm especially grateful that the clinic is open until 7 one evening a week and also Saturday mornings, and that Dr. Amos responds to questions that I've emailed via the form on their website. Love Dr Amos and staff. He has been our vet for 5 years and we commute over to his office from South St Paul after moving in 2013. He is realistic, not excessive with treatments and has reasonable prices. I have tried other vets and gone back to him, he is really the best. He makes the time to squeeze in last minute appointments and also emergencies. He saved my cats life and my wallet in 2014 after being quoted $4000 for emergency surgery at the ER vet, he scheduled my cat the next day at his office for much much less and my cat did great. So due to the "raving" reviews on here, I took my cat to the Nokomis Pet Clinic since he has been having some stomach issues...I wasn't impressed. Dr Amos was rough with my cat, was uncertain of the problem and blamed it on behavior. He did not consult any kind of previous medical history outside of asking if he had been dewormed, didn't ask about shots... between the receptionist and the vet I felt like they were treating me like a bad owner since I am giving my cat Purina (which I thought was a trusted and healthy brand). Either way, my cat received no affection,no comfort, no diagnosis, I think I am still going to take him to a different vet and $45 for a 15 minute exam... I would think they would at least trim his nails, but I don't know if I would have wanted them to anyway considering how he was wrenching his neck around to look at the teeth and yelled at my cat to settle down... instead of trying to soothe him. Maybe I am spoiled by my previous vet (which is now an hour away), who always went above and beyond (Minnesota Pet Valley Hospital in Mankato). These guys really need to take a note from their book! My opinion: Over Priced, Over rated, and lacking any semblence of caring for my animal! read more

Dr. Amos and Nokomis Pet Clinic is the type of clinic you want to go to if you want to do business with someone who is honest, professional and straight forward. I appreciate the way Dr. Amos cuts to the chase when he communicates with me and when he takes care of my pets. I have brought both my dog and 2 cats to Dr. Amos for illnesses and a dental. Dr. Amos doesn't try to over sell your visit by performing unnecessary lab work or x-rays before he gets to a diagnosis. He actually listens to what you have to say, asks questions that are pertinent and gives you a straight forward answer of what could be going on or is in fact is going on. This isn't a clinic, it's a doctor, Dr. Amos Deinard. He is the best vet I have ever known, and I've known a bunch, I am thankful that we have some one of his quality in our little neck of the woods. Family brings him back, and we are lucky to have him. Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, a PhD from Yale University and his DVM from the University of California, Davis. Honestly, if they ever do a vet reality TV show, it will probably feature Dr. Deinard, he even looks like he came out of central casting, but there is no acting in his vet skills, he is the real deal. I thought that I would give this vet another chance, since it was an emergency situation and I couldn't get into my regular vet. Discovered the evening before that my VERY recluse cat had some sort of urinary issue. On the way to the vet the cat peed in his crate (sorry if that's TMI). I was made to wait 15 minutes past my appointment and then Dr. Amos charged in and proceeded to berate me, not a hello, nothing. He asked me how long the cat had been sick (Um, I don't know, I brought him in as soon as I discovered a problem), do I give the cat water (Um, YES), do I clean his litter box(YES)? THEN he told me that he took the cat's urine sample from what the cat had passed in the crate. Huh? He gave me two medications that he had already filled, demanded that I give the cat water and that I take special, very expensive food. If the cat was dehydrated, why didn't they give him some fluids AT the vet? I am no cat whisperer, I can't make him drink water. I ended up leaving the appointment, $200 the poorer (so, unlike other reviewers stated, more than most vets in the area) and feeling like a naughty child who cannot take care of their pets. Bad bedside manner and a rude disposition lost this neighbor's support of Nokomis Pet Clinic. read more

We recently moved to the Longfellow neighborhood and when our cat became ill, I read the reviews of some local pet clinics and decided to try this one first. I'm SO glad we chose the Nokomis Pet Clinic! We have been more than happy with every experience at this clinic as well as with Dr. Amos and the wonderful receptionist. I seriously considered making the drive from our new house back to Nokomis just to see him -- and I would do it if I didn't have a toddler who's not fond of car rides. I've been to some vets who I feel like recommend medications based on habit instead of based on need. But Dr. Amos is very thoughtful and gives excellent, personalized treatment and advice. We've been taking our GSD mix here since 2010, and aside from some chastisement about her weight (reasonable), we've always had good experiences here with Dr Amos. We've been to a few other clinics over the years, mostly due to difficulty getting seen at Nokomis. I can tell you that you will never be met with excessive treatments or hysterics at this clinic. Dr Amos is relaxed, reasonable, and honest about caring for your pet. My only, very minor, complaint is that the clinic hours can sometimes make it difficult to get an appointment in a rush.
