We take a seat and check out the all day breakfast menu. Mum and I were not disappointed with our iced chocolates and vegetarian breakfasts'. From what i've been told, the whole family helps run and make all menu items as well as hand making scrumptious looking cupcakes. The vintage feel creeps through with funny 1950's posters lining the walls. "Unattended children will receive and espresso and a free kitten" had to be my favourite. The other detail that really impressed me was the "what happened on this day in 1950?".. this was a compilation of all the events that happened on 'this day' 64 years ago. How clever!! So much effort, so much heart, so much dedication. I will try my best to come here to support this business whenever I'm in Carina Heights. It's places like this that deserve recognition and a beautiful, successful business.

The servings were heapful, and I'm impressed that we even had some of the sour cream and guacamole left over! Guacamole is very lemony, which I like. Staff were friendly and when I had enquired if they could make a "Dirty Chai" for me, the cashier checked with me by explaining what it is (shot of espresso coffee into a chai latte). Great! They have the menus on random tables so just grab one if you want to sit down and read it first before you order at the counter. Some bakery options, including a couple GF items (Byron Bay cookies, chocolate sticky date pudding, caramel slice when we were there).

The staff always acknowledge you with a warm welcome on arrival too. I think I've grown so accustomed to staff not making eye contact and ignoring me that great service come as a bit of a shock. Fortunately the service is backed-up with really great coffee. Every coffee also comes with a free bite-size brownie. These are delicious and my partner will often buy a few extra. I'm yet to try any of the other food on offer in their display cabinet. There is a real feeling of community at Backstreet Espresso. Michael has set-up a noticeboard where lots of local businesses have pinned their business cards. There are also lots of posters and flyers on the walls for upcoming local events. I like having a peruse while I wait for my coffee, if Michael or one of the friendly staff are too busy for a chat. As the name suggests, Backstreet Espresso is located in a nice quiet backstreet. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating if you want to relax and enjoy your coffee. Newspapers and magazines are available if you want to have a read.

Yes I've been there twice now. Two weekends in a row around 8am. Both with friends and all trying something different from the menu. Everyone had only positive things to say, except maybe the portions were large and they shouldn't have eaten it all. If you're going for breakfast they are not going to have your typical breakfast foods. But who doesn't love a lunch style menu for breakfast. Regardless, you'll have trouble deciding what to have. It's an eclectic menu and if you prefer something on the lighter side there is a bakery onsite as well. I was told the chef likes to play around when I asked about a particular biscuit/cookie. Think red velvet biscuit with marshmallow inside. The staff are very friendly and helpful giving recommendations with regard to what might satisfy your craving when you've narrowed your decision down to two. For my part there were a lot of meals with eggs which I'm very fussy about so typically just don't choose it (makes sense ). But there were a couple I just really want to try next time and was told some accommodation could be made. Having said that the ingredients in each meal are so well thought out I would really not want to change things up. Unless it was to maybe ask for the egg on the side. Will I be back. It's the newest member of the Venzin Group family who've delivered Brisbane the likes of Green Papaya and Pawpaw Cafe. In fact, interior wise, you'll feel right at home and wonder if you're in a Pawpaw transplant. You're not although there's touches that keep it familiar. One such touch is executive chef Rory Doyle who's graces in the menu are clear. There's hearty and non-traditional breakfast menu items that all let you select breakfast and a coffee for under $20. Then there's familiar lunch items like the Picnic Burger (this had sold out by the time I headed back for lunch at 12:20pm) and gnocchi. I had the pumpkin gnocchi which was light and filling. It's good quality and again under $20 with a drink. I was pumped for time when I stopped in on my way to meetings this morning so opted for the fruit toast and a coffee. The fruit toast is the lightest I've ever tasted. It really is a fruit brioche. Paired with a light layer of Pepe Saya butter - delicious! Coffee is, as with Pawpaw, Campos but the team are consistently good baristas so the quality remains high. Like Pawpaw there was a steady flow of people and already they're experiencing weekend lines as people trek to taste the new venture. Service is fast, but done well. Granted, I visited on a Thursday but still both visits had at least several other diners in at the same time. For all the similarities, this isn't Pawpaw. It is its own cafe in its own right. Today was the first of many visits I think, and I'm looking forward to see how Picnic grows into it's name and space.

We did sneak in a coconut macaroon that was divine. Staff are relaxed and friendly. Parking is right out front, so it was a bit noisy out there. Choice seating inside for sur.

The coffee, made from di Bella beans, is excellently pulled. There is no bitterness in the espresso and the beans are well balanced. If you can get in between 7.30-8.30am, the coffee comes in at an astounding $2 for the regular (single shot) size. Cold pressed iced coffees and iced chocolates are also available in the fridge. The place has a warm suburban feel, and the staff are exceedingly friendly. Despite being staffed by a single person, the service is prompt and quick. Dog friendly, though the dogs are kept outside.
