I was initially quite happy to see a new studio in O2's old space and I had taken classes with Lauren when she subbed there a few times (she was trained at O2 and I believe taught there for a bit, before I became a member) and maybe I just didn't pick the right classes, but I would opt for flow classes at Down Under instead. That said, the prices here are much more reasonable! The cost of drop-ins and class cards at most studios are a huge barrier to making yoga accessible. 866855

If it weren't for the traffic coming off Lake Street to get over to this part of Arlington, I'd definitely be a regular. First things first, no typical yoga studio stink that hits you in the face as soon as you walk in. I don't know if they crank the windows open all the time or if the hard wood floors are a boon but great job on the ventilation. I have a pretty sensitive nose, with overly strong perfume/cologne/BO really getting to me, and Lotus stands out as one of the few yoga studios I've visited where the smell was not an issue at all. I took an evening slow flow class with a focus on the hips and pelvis, which was perfect for my tight hamstrings. Lots of props available. If you get a spot in the back of the room, though, it's tricky to see the instructor demo-ing near the front, so I relied a lot on what my neighbors were doing. They have a cozy seating area and bathroom downstairs that you should check out if able. Check out the website - they have a packed class schedule and an unlimited 2-week special for newcomers.

They don't take credit cards and I didn't have cash, but the teacher let me take the class anyway and send a check later ($17 for a drop-in rate, though it's cheaper if you sign up for the class series). The class was well-taught -- the teacher knew her stuff and placed the correct amount of emphasize on anatomical correctness and breath. But it just wasn't for me. It's an older, less physical crowd than I'm used to, and the class really didn't feel like much of a workout. I know, yoga isn't all about asana, but I work in an office and sit nearly motionless all day. Yoga class is my time to move and sweat, and I barely did either. Afterwards I just wanted to go home and sleep. But if you want low-intensity yoga for relaxation and restoration, this is a good place. The space was clean and nice (though the ceiling felt low and gloomy and the room was cooold), and they have a wonderful assortment of props (mats, blocks, blankets, eye pillows).

Also, they charge $17 to drop-in for a class, which is a bit high for me. They do offer muti-class passes that you can buy, which brings the price per class down to $15 or so. I am interested in checking out some of their other classes to see if they have a different vibe. The Center's location is a good one for me, especially for weekend classes. Overall, people (instructors & patrons) were very nice & friendly.

They offer gentle assists, anatomically safe instruction (Jenna is meticulous about this), and the right balance of challenge and variation for all levels. I come from a different tradition than Jenna's training but have always left learning something new, and appreciating her style, humility and compassion. The space is warm, beautifully done with a combination of greenery, that reclaimed wood post and beam architecture, and clean lines. There's not a lot of Hindu influence here - their music selections are mostly ambient, modern relaxation or upbeat tracks that don't compete with instruction. Don't get confused -- enter through the Main St. door, as if you were going to the bank, but keep going into the building, and up the first half flight of stairs, you're there! This is a wonderful business in Medford, I want to help hang permanent decal signs on the windows, as it's really hard to know that studio is even there. I discovered it by accident when visiting a friend. Gem in Medford. Support a small business owner offering really good yoga with a sincerely open heart.

The bathrooms are super clean (feels like a hotel bathroom, to be honest), tons of stalls and shower stalls and the drinking water fountain is fast/cool. Wow-wee. I've been taking most of my yoga classes at Yoga Six in Wellesley but was looking for…read moresomething a tad hotter. The C2 class made me look like I had climbed out of a swimming pool afterwards. Not for the faint of heart (literally) but that was my fault - I should've started with the C1 class, which is less heated and slower-paced. PRE-CLASS: It was my first time doing CorePower and, I don't know, I was expecting a little more of an introduction/explanation when I checked in. Maybe I'm spoiled by the OrangeTheory introduction when the instructor walked me through everything and took the time to go over where everything was. Here, all I was told was that we'd be in studio __. I wandered around aimlessly and found the lockers, with signs saying locks were available at the front desk. It would've been nice to know that upfront but c'est la vie. Trying to be more zen in the new year. CLASS: Hot, hot, hot. Inga cranked the heat/humidity all the way up. I was a literal puddle about five minutes in. As a newcomer to CPY (but not to yoga), I got a lot of the cues mixed up; this is a studio-by-studio and teacher-by-teacher distinction but hearing the poses called by their names (instead of "crescent lunge with right foot back") took a while getting used to. Also, the playlist wasn't ... great. Some love ballads mixed with hard rock. Just give me the elevator violin music or nothing at all. The flow for the class was quick and fast-moving, with lots of one-legged variations, and you are encouraged to take breaks but the break itself was so short before the teacher would move on. It got so hot at one point that I seriously contemplated leaving the room. Bring plenty of water and one extra towel. POST-CLASS THOUGHTS: The studio itself felt cramped; the class was only about half-full but I'm not sure a packed sardine-type class would be enjoyable with so much sweat pouring out of every orifice. I did wish that, for savasana (aka, my favorite pose), the temperature could be turned down several notches. Or CPY could offer cold hand towels after (sorry, spoiled by Yoga Six). Also - there is definitely a sweaty funky smell. Like 8/10 on a scale of funkiness. Unescapable and inevitable, for sure. Sorry to keep drawing comparisons but one of the features that I like a lot about Yoga Six is that there, the ventilation seems much better. Parking: Abundant, free parking. This is probably what's going to make me come to the Fresh Pond CPY location over the other ones in Boston or Cambridge.

I took a 90 minute heated flow with Brittney which was probably the hardest yoga class I've ever taken. I literally don't think I've sweat more in my life, but it was amazing. Something that is different than this Yoga Studio than others is the lack of mirrors. I always find myself staring at myself and getting distracted, and during these flows I was more present in the moment. I also really enjoyed Gregor and Claire's heated flows. I haven't done a regular flow because I prefer the heat. I am currently enjoying a newcomer special that is $30 for 30 days, and think I will purchase a membership after. The only problem is I drive here, and parking can sometimes be challenging on Massachusetts Ave.

THE GOOD: The…read moreteachers are mostly excellent (detailed, patient, and mindful of student's varying levels). The front desk staff is mostly helpful, cheerful, and welcoming. The studio is conveniently located near the Porter Square T stop and has plenty of nearby parking, making transportation easy. And, importantly, it's a judgement-free zone. If you need to modify your practice or take unscheduled breaks in class, no one will bat an eye. In fact, teachers encourage it. All great things. THE NOT SO GOOD: My first time at the studio, no one helped orient me to the space. I found myself asking dozens of questions, gradually annoying the front desk staff. I wish someone recognized I was new to Down Under and provided a brief tour. Down Under also seems to disregard the comfort of its students. Recently, the water fountain and upstairs bathroom in the studio were out of service. Only the basement bathroom had running water. For a hot yoga studio, providing access to water seems essential. But, during the water shutdown, the only option was to go to the basement and fill up your water bottle from the bathroom tap (which only dribbled lukewarm water). Worst of all, the water issue lasted for several days. The whole experience wasn't just inconvenient, it also felt callous of Down Under to not provide a basic thing like hydration. They could have offered bottled water (even for a fee) or put up a temporary water station with one of those large Gatorade jugs. But, no: the only option was lukewarm tap water from the dank basement bathroom. Every day I went to class, there were at least 2-3 students waiting impatiently (often dripping in sweat since the studio is regularly heated to 105 degrees) before and after practice. The Porter Square location is also just janky. I've heard staff describe it as "old school" or "vintage." These are euphemisms for what it really is: an aging space lacking amenities. I've been to the more modern and amenity-filled Down Under studios in Harvard Square and Central Square. Changing rooms, tiled private showers, pilates rooms, etc. exist at these other locations. In Porter Square? You'll have to change clothes in a curtained off area that barely provides privacy. I've had someone walk in on me while changing twice. More annoying is the fact that the changing rooms in the studio are often pitch dark. Since they are in the corner, little daylight reaches them and staff do not turn on the corner lights before or after class. So, you're stuck changing in the dark. With all the investments made in other studios, you'd think Down Under could upgrade basic things in Porter Square like changing spaces with latched doors. Nope. Yet another example of the studio's disregard of students' comfort. Still, I retain my monthly membership. Why? Well, I was initially drawn in when I read Down Under's website which proudly proclaims it is "America's Best Yoga, Pilates, and Fitness." I disagree. It's not America's best. It's just the least worst option in Cambridge.
