Our family tried Norsemen for the first time on a trip into Topeka for a concert! Unfortunately, based on the overall positive reviews I see on the platform, I think we might have caught the establishment on a bit of an off night. It was a Friday around 6:00 pm, and despite being worried about our ability to get a seat at a popular restaurant during that time of week, we walked right in and were seated immediately. Good start. That ended up being about the only "good" mark of the evening. The service was extremely slow all evening, and without verbal explanation. However, it was pretty plain to see that they were desperately understaffed. It just would have been nice to have been provided a good expectation up front, as we ended up very squeezed for time at the end of the dining experience, causing concern for making our concert date after. That said, the couple of folks working the entire half of the restaurant I had eyes on were working their tails off, so credit to them for the effort. Not their fault. After waiting for an extended time for our food, only some of it arrived, with a promise that the other meals were right behind. That ended up not being the case; the last person at the table to be served received their meal long after the others had completely finished. I'm assuming the kitchen was just as short staffed as the front of house. The food was...fine, at best, on this occasion. Considering the wait and price, it actually lands at pretty suboptimal. There was definitely potential; maybe on another night where it was cooked with better attention and served fresh, it might have been above average. Of good note, the lingonberry options on the menu were fun, and the appetizer we ordered with it was definitely the food highlight of our experience. The place had a nice vibe to it! Update on 9/13/24: Devastating visit after a long time waiting to return. We haven't been driving to and from Olathe as much and I was so excited to return for my favorite beer, beet chips, and some sort of exciting entree. Walking in on a Friday evening to an empty restaurant should have told us right then and there things have tanked! Weird long wait from sitting to receiving waters to the server returning to take our order but then..... maybe 30 minutes goes by and our server returns to awkwardly tell me that the kitchen can't seem to find any soup. Wtheck? The hand-written board upon entering the establishment clearly states lobster bisque still available and why does it take so long to realize there isn't any? Continued to wait for one order of wings and cold beet chips! I guess the beet chips are no longer made to order and served warm? Server stood at the bar talking to people. From Boston visiting family in Topeka (4 adults and a baby). I'm not a beer drinker, so I tried the elderberry blackberry mead. It is sweet and refreshing. Family had a cream ale, pale ale and New England IPA. We decided on apps even though I was hankering for the egg salad sandwich! We had the fried goat cheese bites, wings, Swedish meatballs, hummus platter & chicken fingers. We were starved, so no pics taken--next time. Everything was delicious. My only criticism is the hummus needed more moisture to make it scoopable and perhaps a tad more tahini. The goat cheese bites were the star of the show! Great service too. What a fun spot! We arrived on a Sunday during brunch hours, expecting to be navigating a crowd, but there were just a few tables occupied in this huge establishment. Food was interesting, with plenty of recognizable favorites as well as more adventurous/unfamiliar dishes. And the beer - the beer is excellent! We came into the Norsemen after dinner for a few drinks. It was steady with lots of people as they were having trivia night. My date ordered a beer and I wasn't sure what I wanted, the Bartender was friendly and said he could pretty much make me any cocktail, I asked for a mojito-but he could not make that! I then decided on a regular Moscow Mule. He was also very helpful in helping my date choose a beer. We sat up at the bar top, it was kind of loud since they were playing trivia but over all a fun place. I had checked in on my Yelp app and received 50% off a beer. I showed the Bartender who wasn't sure about the discount so went and got a Manager. She came by and looked at the code and said she was unfamiliar with it, that they do not pay Yelp or use Yelp and they got nothing from Yelp-which I stated "You get my review" which is a good word of mouth for businesses since people do look at reviews(in general) anyhow I believe we did end up getting the discount, I forgot to ask my date when he paid. We arrived at 10:55 did not get food til 1pm. Went to a birthday brunch here for a party of 15 which was made well in advance. We arrived and there are three other big parties according to the staff did not make a reservation but were friends of the owner so they got priority. Our table was put on the back burner and we waited 45 minutes to even get our drinks ordered and an hour to get our food. The food arrived and it was cold and many others were missing half if not all of their food. I was told they only had sausage patties, but they were large links, and when the food came out it was poorly cooked links. I am sure I will be sick later. There was only one wait staff attending to the group and as you imagine did not go over well. The poor manager did her best once she realized what was happening and attempted to remove items and offered discounts, but the damage was done. It was an awful experience and for a lot of us was the first time here and will not be returning back. It was truly a horrid experience. The ambiance was more like a dark cellar. I would not recommend having a large group function here, but maybe individually I'm sure it's fine. read more

We enjoyed it. We popped in for a light bite and some beers on a Wednesday afternoon. My wife and I chose 5 beers for a shared flight. They were all decent but one (a blonde ale) was super, super light - like water). We left that one alone. We most enjoyed the HELLES and we each ordered a pint. We also each ordered a salad. The place wasn't busy (about 5pm). The staff were all friendly. So the beers were decent and our favorites were the HELLAS and the Irish Stout. I had the Norsemen Salad with crispy chicken and ranch dressing. I really liked it. My wife ordered the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken. Sadly it came with crispy chicken. Turns out they were out of grilled chicken and we got surprised with crispy instead. A few issues with the way they do their Caesar. 1. It had tomatoes on it 2. It had fine grated cheese on it 3. The dressing wasn't a creamy Caesar dressing like my wife expected It may sound sort of picky but if they would step up their game on the Caesar, everyone would benefit. Also, let the customer know before you make an main ingredient substitution (crispy vs grilled chicken) so the customer has a choice. Such a cool place! Old town Topeka at its best. Came in on a hot day and was served delicious cold beer. If you like fruit forward beer, try the Peach Crush. It's amazing!! Also had the Scottish Ale and it was fantastic and I drink Scotch Ale everywhere we travel. We chose to sit at the bar while eating lunch and the service was quick and friendly. Food came out super quick!! Egg salad sandwich is the best ever and delicious wings. Stopping here was an excellent idea and we hope to return!! read more

Service was very nice, the decor inside was really neat, and everything from the food to the drinks were very enjoyable. This place was a surprise. Normally, when you go to a bar you get the staples of bar food; nachos, potato skins, fries, fried mushrooms... etc. This place is definitely above the norm. I mean, you can order Dragon Eggs and Swedish Meatballs... hell yeah. So, we sampled the Savory and Sweid which was really good. WOW. I ordered the Norsemen Classic which was a really lovely salad and I added a Red Apple Temptation. Talk about a game changer. I grew up in Los Angeles and our variety for restaurants is top notch and have traveled all over the country. I can honestly say, this place didn't really feel like I was in Topeka. And I am certainly not insulting Topeka; I love this town. But, lets keep it real here, Topeka is primarily a BBQ, mashed potatoes and steak type of place. So when you come here and see what they have in their somewhat limited menu, it felt fancy. The service was great. Would return and recommend. read more

Norsemen Brewing Company is a true brewpub with beer made onsite. The Nordic brewing concept is genius. The beers however, have nothing to do with Nordic or German beer styles. It's the same beer styles you will find in any brewpub in the U.S. The exception is the Kentucky Common Ale (a rare historic style), not Nordic but uncommon and tasty. The food is influenced by Nordic culture and was delicious. All portions are small. I recommend giving Norsemen Brewing Company a try. read more

That Vienna Lager!!! And the Scottish and their take on a unique saison ... we tried all 12 beers they had on tap! 5 pours on their build your own flight was an easy way to get them all in. Plus we left with a Crowler of Vienna and were tempted to take home the even bigger Growler. I love brewery swag but their TShirt designs just didn't do it for me. I'll keep an eye out for new stuff next time we visit. This tap house is HUGE and we've heard rumors you can rent the upstairs space for all sorts of events. Wedding, birthday, options are limitless. Unfortunately I started with a coconut rum and coke. It almost tasted like bleach in the lines or residual chemicals in the drink. 2 of us ordered the Reubens. Very little meat, and kraut. Only 1 tinybslice of bread and you had to use a knife and fork to eat it. If this is open faced at least give us something substantial. I stopped by here yesterday with my wife for some afternoon drinks. We were conveniently already located in NOTO and so finding Norseman Brewing on N Kansas Ave was a breeze. While it looks big from the outside, the inside looks even bigger due to its open concept setup. As soon as you walk in there are areas to chill on both the right and the left with a foosball table to the right. Behind all of that there is a giant bar on the right and seating on the left with large TVs everywhere. They keep the Norse theme going with the decorations as some of the lights are candelabras and they have some shields up as well. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery I went with a flight. Each one was $2 and you could go with as many or as little as desired. Whenever our bartender told me that the server held 5, I went with that many. My choices were the schwarzbier, cherry milkshake IPA, Odins One EyePA, Belgian Black Rye PA and finally the coffee Porter. Out of all of them, I was most looking forward to the cherry milkshake IPA as I had no clue what it was going to taste like. It ended up tasting pretty good with a lot of sweetness at the front with a little bit of hops at the finish. Still out of the bunch it was the Odins EyePa that was favorite (I would order 2 more pints) and the schwarzbier that was my least favorite even if it was good. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed my beer and thought that Norseman Brewing was a pretty cool place. read more

Great Local Brewery! The service is sometimes a bit slow, but always been pleased with the beers, and food. Their Chicken Caesar salad is perfect. Nice comfortable atmosphere. Large room too! Although they have limited selection of beers, there are enough to satisfy the taste of most people. Sadly, they sold out of their new Odin's One EyePA but out server recommended two alternatives which we bought one of each. The New Tattoo-Zappa was a bit on the citrus side. I can't remember the IPA I ordered, but it was much more traditional. We will return to explore other beers they have. read more

What a great find. In the middle of what is clearly a part of NoTo that is under renewal, this place is a solid anchor to the area. I'll admit I found the menu a little intimidating as it's an eclectic mix, but I'm so glad we went. Hubs had wings and steak fries as he's not very adventurous anyway, but I had what is an open-faced apple sandwich with the fried beets. Damn good and so unexpected. The service was great too. Bartender and servers were friendly and helpful and fun to talk with as well. We will make this a Must Stop in the future. Great merch too. read more

This has to be the best brunch in Topeka! I have been a couple of times and the food plus service never fails. The breakfast reuben and beet chips are both amazing, the reuben is one of the best I have ever tried. It had smelled pretty terrible indoors so we opted for the outdoor "Biergarten" that was just a couple tables that were falling apart. The beers were decent but nothing was too exciting or spectacular. I didn't take to long to try out beers before buying one because of the smell. We excitedly and for the first time ordered takeout on Friday 6/7/2024. I ordered their cheese balls with lingonberry sauce, lobster bisque, apple open sandwich, kids cheeseburger and a salmon ceasar salad. On top of all that we generously tipped 5% and paid their $.50 per item charge for takeout. Upon waiting well past the time it was said to be done (no issues it was busy) we received the bags tied up and ready to go (unable to check and was starving at the time). The salmon salad had no salmon and my daughters cheeseburger with no cheese. All normal mistakes with a restaurant but, now I've tried calling and selecting multiple options to get through and there's no way to contact them without me driving 20 minutes across town to go into the store and have them correct their wrong. read more

Went to lunch today in NOTO so that we could shop/browse afterwards. I'd recently heard about the menu at Norsemen's, so we gave it a try. Seriously, I was expecting "bar food", but this was not! The menu was intriguing and fun and thematic! I had the Smoked Salmon sandwich which was delish with the beet chips, also tasty. My friend had the meatballs and she really liked that. Well my oh my. I don't know what I did to deserve such a beautiful trip to Kansas, but I'm more than happy that I took the time to stop in Topeka to grab some local craft beer. I wound up at Norsemen Brewing and I'm very excited to say that it was a wonderful experience! :) The second I opened the main entrance, I realized that I was now in beer heaven, and I could indulge in any option imagineable. Norsemen Brewing Company serves a wide variety of beers that will give you a little strife because you can't quite decide which option to choose! I'm very glad that I was able to try a flight and choose my own options. I will definitely have to recommend their house IPA and Lager as a selection for your soul. If you like these kind of brews of course. The viking style beer hall makes for an entertaining and stunning environment. I will certainly be returning to Norsemen Brewing for more beer! read more

My husband had wanted to stop here at the beginning of our vacation but we were through on a Sunday, when they are closed. Made it work for our trip back through the area and it was well worth it. Interesting menu- where have beetles chips been all my life?! I liked that they had local wine and my husband liked the beers. Very friendly staff. Food is good albeit child portion size. Their appetizers are even smaller. I wish they would actually serve adult size portions. Food is good but tiny. Plan on ordering about 5 entrees to get filled up. Appetizers are like toothpicks. Now their brews are another story. They have some exceptional tasting craft brews. So don't plan on actually eating your fill unless you order like 50 entrees. However, the brews are great. Side note: the beat chips are pretty cool. You do get a lions share of beat chips in a feeble attempt at making up for the absolute minimalist entree portion size. Our waitress sucked when we ate there. Like terrible sucked. Like completely useless would ask for another waitress or would ask if we can serve ourselves if I ever see that useless person again ever. Food was passable only terribly small portion size. Interesting takes on what isn't actually Norse style food. Craft selections were fantastic. Just don't ever plan on getting full, so if you're actually hungry make the pass. read more
