I stopped in on a whim during lunch on Monday. Before I go any further, I want to be clear- just know that I love a good dive bar... when it's actually presented as one. That wasn't really the case here. I saw they served food and planned to grab lunch. I was the only customer, which might deter some people, but that doesn't usually bother me. I grabbed a seat, ordered a beer, and started with an appetizer. The bartender, Amy, was fantastic- kind, friendly, and on top of everything. Truly no complaints there. You can tell she's doing the best with what she has. The beer tasted a bit off. It was not the end of the world, but it did make me wonder if the lines are cleaned regularly or if that particular beer just doesn't get ordered often. The main issue for me was the food. I ordered the $9 mozzarella sticks, and they were clearly microwaved. Literally the kind you'd get from a grocery store freezer aisle. Somehow they were both mushy and overcooked at the same time. The marinara wasn't great either, so I switched to ranch just to get through them. I'm glad I stopped at an appetizer and didn't commit to a full meal. Honestly, the vibe could work if the place leaned into what it actually is. If the food isn't going to be a focus, it might be better not to offer it at all. I'd consider coming back for a drink, especially if Amy is working, but I wouldn't return for the food. read more

Not entirely sure what expectations people have but for me, it was a perfect place to catch up with a former work colleague who I haven't see in years. We ordered our first round of drinks at the bar and then moved to a high top in the back. Immediately felt like a local, just chilling in the neighborhood bar. The bartender came by later to see if we wanted another round. She was very friendly and helpful. Prices are very reasonable. North City Tavern is of course in the northern area of Columbus. It's good for a strip mall bar. They have a good patio. It's also pretty clean inside. The service is friendly usually. If you think that because it's in a strip mall it's lame, it isn't so bad. It had a pretty relaxing atmosphere thanks to the cool rock music on the radio. The service is pretty friendly most of the time. At one time they used to have food. Right now it seems they aren't using the kitchen. In spite of this, it's still a good place to drink. The cocktails are pretty cheap at about $3 for a vodka. It's kind of in a lame location, but this is a nice bar. There's a lot of traffic in this area, but it can also be reached by taking Lazelle from Sancus. You should still be able to have a good time. read more

I've been to North City Tavern several times throughout the years of roaming in the area, and it's always because someone else pitches the idea. Every time I'm here it's always a weird vibe (drama is pretty common here) but hey I'm just here to drink some beer and play some pool. But last night was so bizarre I just have to share the story. I come out to NCT to meet up with several of my friends, and they're already out on the patio drinking and apparently ordered and paid for a pizza about half an hour ago which was a whole ordeal, which I wasn't there for so I'm not sure what exactly happened. We come in to get more drinks, and there's a pizza on the bar. My friend ordered an entirely different pizza, and there were several other people waiting on theirs as well. So there was a lot of confusion about whose pizza was just sitting there so we asked the bartender Ally G. She said it was ours, even though the pizza was missing toppings that were supposed to be included. We explained to the bartender that the pizza we ordered should've came with these toppings, to which Ally took the pizza back to the kitchen. Not sure if she was making a whole new one or just putting them on, we got our drinks and went back out to the patio. We hang out for about 45 minutes, then just I go inside to order a drink and to check on my friend's pizza. The bartender told me she had no idea what I was talking about and thought I was making up the whole thing. I had to break down the scene from 45 minutes before to her, and she said "oh they already left with it". Uhh no, we're still here. She went out back and was gone for about 15 minutes and found the missing pizza, put toppings on it and boxed it up for us. The whole time other patrons had either left because their drinks or food never came, and were waiting for over an hour on their food. The owner of the bar was asked to come in by one of the regulars and was trying to hold the bar together and pretty sure was confused as we were as to what was going on and tried to help. I get it bartenders take shots on the job but the behavior and mannerisms we saw were definitely not drunk. We were not confrontational at all, more puzzled by the confusion and the things Ally was saying. As we were leaving, one of the regulars came out to us to apologize for all that. He also was waiting for his pizza just as long as we were, but never even received it. He asked us not to associate this experience with how NCT is regularly and that the bartenders behavior was abnormal and he has never seen her like that. We really appreciated the guy coming out to us to talk about that experience. The dude was really nice, and the pizza ended up coming in handy later after we took ourselves over to Slick Whiskers. read more

This oasis is up white stairs on the southern banks of the great parking-lot bay off 23 and Lazelle. A roomy neighborhood pub it has a long rectangle bar, comfy booths, pinball and billiard table with space to contort yourself for the dream shot without whacking a 6'6 muscle freak in the face on the kickback. The space is clean and shiny under the blue and red illuminations of the beer signs. What stands out is the staff, it seems this place takes 'welcoming' as a serious concept. The staff seems trained to make you feel like a known face on entrance. They balance the customer check in just right; always on the spot, never too much. They mix drinks just right. A mainstream bar they have a nice selection of crafts on tap, as well in bottles. The staff could be more knowledgeable though, I asked about one and they didn't know about it. Not the worse thing, they do give you a taste, I am sure it will be worked out with experience. Acoustics here are awesome. When playing jukebox or on karaoke night the sounds ring loud and clear. Many live band venues in town could use their walls. It is a fun place, a hangout, that distinguishes itself from the like by its wonderful staff and comfy environment. read more

The service here in my one experience was poor. The pizza was really good and we tried a weird Sweet Baby Jesus chocolate peanut butter porter, which was very interesting. More peanut butter than chocolate, but drinkable. The bartender seemed to have the place to herself on the late Friday afternoon three friends and I stopped in for an early dinner. There were about 10 people in the place, half at the bar, including us, and the other half at a table. We ordered two Tavern Classic Works pizzas to share, some soft drinks (and the one beer) and chips and salsa as an appetizer. After waiting until our first round of beverages were gone we had to ask here where the appetizer was. She then brought it out immediately. They were good but not excellent. The pizzas, however, were really really good! Flat and thin, the crust was outstanding and the ingredients all seemed fresh (no canned mushrooms but fresh!) -- and the cheese was of very good quality. It appeared when the first pizza came out that we wouldn't suffice because not only did we not have silverware (had to get her attention and ask for it--she might be hard of hearing?) but the toppings were a bit on the light side. But wow was it good (and satisfying). After a slice it became clear that the amount of toppings was perfect when blended with the good sauce, excellent crust and cheese. Again though on the service! Of our two pizzas ordered, one was without mushrooms. The one WITH mushrooms (which is the way they come normally) came out first. Okay, the guy who can't eat mushrooms will have to wait... TEN minutes later the second one finally came out. At no time did the bartender/waitress communicate what the delay was or let us know in advance there would be such a long wait in between the pies. We were just happy to have it at this point. Again, try the Tavern Classic Works pizza, it was excellent for us. Just don't expect excellent service. read more

Yelped a nearby place for drinks with a friend and North City Tavern popped up with rave reviews. Why couldn't I have an amazing experience like so many other have had? I don't know why but what a bummer. Here is how it went down for me: My friend and I walk in and stand awkwardly at the door for a minute. Why? Because there were no employees in site to direct us - other than the bartender who didnt even look up. All the patrons were at the bar - no one at the tables so we mosied over to the bar. After waiting to the point we were talking about leaving, here comes the bartender. We asked for a cocktail menu - it's a sports bar so no hard feelings they didn't have one. The first three drinks I asked for she didn't know how to make. I proceed to tell her the ingrediants to the drinks and she actually tells me that abscinthe is illegal in Ohio. Um, that's funny...they sale it everywhere (watch out Kroger - you are breaking the law!) My friend and I got a bourbon/ginger beer and moved from the bar to a table. So.....apart from the fail with the bartender. I asked about the deal advertised on their Yelp page - $20 for $10. I was told that I could use it if I printed the voucher.....that they could not scan the barode from my phone. (It says on the deal description, "redeem on your phone with the Yelp app"...what the hell?) Very dive bar feel with horrible music playing. My boyfriend and I were driving by and were attracted to the Tavern from the street by its umbrellas and lights on the patio. We were traveling and like to try local restaurants over chains. My sister and I had a great time at NCT. She just moved a mile away from here, so we went to check it out. It's great to see another locally-owned spot in this part of town. It's unique and has a little class, but seems to blend smoothly into the surroundings. The patio is great on a nice evening. I had a beer and shared the cheese plate with my sister. okay so let me start off by saying the bar itself is not too bad, but the employee (bartender) I had an experience with us why im giving this bar a 1 star. I have worked in the customer service industry my whole life and I have seen good and bad, but there was a bartender there by the name of zoey (zoe) I'm not sure if the spelling. I only got her name because I asked a regular there what her name was because she did not introduce herself nor acknowledge me at all. I walked in the bar because I love to karaoke and they have karaoke on Fridays, yay! As what it seems to be a yay turned into the worst situation. I walked in, sat down for about 15 minutes the bartender did not even look my way. I then walked to the other side of the bar and flagged my hands like I wanted to order, she gave me a dirty look and walked the other way. Finally she came around and got my order, no hi how are you or anything just what do you want? I am a very polite person so I said hi how are you? She said here and gave me the beer. So I let that go and i usually have more than a couple but I could not get her attention once again so I just asked for my bill. She did not say a word took her time to get the bill and just put it in front of me no have a good night, or goodnight or anything Worst customer service i have ever experienced in my life!! There was an incident at the bar tonight which was very avoidable. The bartender should have stepped in when it was first brought to her attention, but she avoided interfering. This was likely because some of the people involved were her friends, and possibly influenced by the fact that she had been drinking quite a few shots throughout the night, mostly with this same group. At the end, we were paying our tab and leaving, when the other group came all the way around the bar and hit my friend in the face before we got out. Even when this was pointed out to the bartender, she was very reticent to intervene. She just kept appologizing for the other people, saying they didn't mean it (even though they ran around a bar, probably 75', to punch someone). These people were very obviously drunk by this point, slurring and barely able to talk coherently (short of throwing insults and namecalling). I do not know if the other party was made to leave, because we left before they did. When my friend mentioned calling the police for assault on the others, the bartender kept telling her she really wouldn't want to do that, and the others were sorry (even though they were still trying to instigate from a distance as we were leaving). That is no sign of remorse. Other patrons played mediator, when it should have never gotten to that point in the first place. read more

We took a seat after no one greeted us. After sitting there for 10 minutes with no acknowledgement, we noticed the bartender was texting and wiping down bottles. She was obviously bored. NCT is a diamond in the rough. I eat here multiple times a week. Their food is always good and always fresh. They even have some vegan options. The cheese plate is a personal favorite. The grilled cheese and pizzas are always good choices as well. Overall NCT is a great place to eat and grab a couple of drinks. The staff is amazing and super friendly. We arrived and had a bit of a wait to order...understandable. When our bartender took our drink order, she got it wrong, bottles not draft, but we let it go. We asked to order food, she took my order, went to the register and then took out money and started making change...for almost 5 minutes. Then asked me again for my order then my boyfriends. The food came out and my order was wrong. My boyfriends order-after 20 Minutes- never came out. We asked for it to go. Unfortunately it appears she may have had been under the influence, based on her eyes being glassy, slurred speech and falling while she was behind the bar. We have been to this bar a few times when they were super busy and got great service. I love coming to this place! The atmosphere is great...Karaoke on Fridays, trivia on Tuesdays. Great selection of beers and their food is just delicious. Anything on the menu tastes great and is reasonably priced. Pizza and wings have great, unique flavor and are far from your a beverage "bar food"..definitely worth trying. It's nice that they added the new dining area Too. Makes for a more pleasurable dining experience and jazzes the place up a bit :) well done!! read more
