Please disregard negative reviews from five or more years ago. They don't deserve them. The girls who work here are knowledgeable, friendly, and hard-working. They gave us free run of the greenhouses, and you will find a wonderful and amazing assortment of succulents and cacti here. Far more than at a competitor in Fallbrook . . . but at $30 for a full flat of 64 pots, we saved $34 compared to the other place where we bought ten pots for $10. The entrance road to the nursery is a one-lane dirt road adjacent to a concrete driveway, and it's easy to miss, but you don't want to overlook this place if you're checking out the other succulent nurseries in the area. I really love this place. I didn't expect that we would have the attentive, service and the expansive selection. There were so much types of succulents, cactus and ground cover plants to choose from! This family owned business was so knowledgeable about the types of plants and the prices are the best I've paid for, for these plants yet. Mind blowing...You'll have to go see for your self. I recently purchased some planters that are perfect homes for succulents. I visited 2 popular "home" places. I spent way too much money on mediocre plants. North County Roots Nursery is the place I will go to from now on for my needs. Yes, it's in Valley Center however, it is on the outskirts that I find easily accessible from my location in Rancho Bernardo. It is easy to find if you are looking for it. It is a little off the main street down a long driveway. I didn't see any signage to point me in the right direction however, I could see greenhouses from the street. I decided to pull in and was delighted to find ample parking on the dirt to the left and a very short walk to a vision of the largest volume of plants that I have ever seen in one location. I went into one greenhouse and found a wonderful woman that told me what to do and to let her know when I was ready to check out. I walked to another greenhouse and made my selections filling my flat. ( I bought a flat of some of the most beautiful succulents. ) The assistance I received and the wonderful energy there made it worth the drive and the gas. Oh yes and the very healthy and luxurious plants. You can smell the moisture in the air and the scent of the soil in the air in each greenhouse. I am aware alone is not an indication of healthy plants however, these were so beautiful. Each of the plants I saw, you can tell they have been loved. I will be back. I would suggest going in the morning when they open as it gets very warm there. I took one star down just because there was no signage. A nice sign would be great. Had I not made a nice drive, I may have turned around thinking it was just a home. Well, I suppose it is a home....a home for great plants! :) read more

I have mixed feelings about this nursery, so I'll lay out the pros and cons: First, the PROS: - Their prices are good, probably better than most places. $0.75 for a two-inch pot, $5 for a six-inch pot, I think. - They have an amazing end-of-the-year sale where you can get a full flat of succulents for $5. Yes, $5! That's how I discovered this place, actually. I saw a post on Instagram about their $5 clearance sale. A year ago, when my yard was empty and I needed a lot of plants, this sale was perfect for me. I literally did not finish planting all the succulents I purchased during the sale until almost a year later. - The people here are also very friendly and helpful. Now, the CONS: So, that was a year ago ^^^. I recently visited this place again, and I have to say I wasn't that impressed with their plants. I think you can get bigger and healthier plants for comparable prices at a Home Depot if you just watch for the sales and clearances. If you want more unique plants, you can get those at the smaller more boutique-y nurseries around town. So, bottom line: Watch for their $5 clearance sale. I think they are also good any time if you're starting out and want to add plants to your collection for cheap. For the more experienced gardener, I would say, it might not be worth the drive to Vista if you live 30 minutes or more away. read more

I used to love this place when it was in Vista, but ever since it moved in late 2018 to Valley Center, I've been really disappointed. Not only is the new location in an incredibly remote location, but they've also bumped up their prices with no real difference in quality or variety than before. $1 for 2" pots, $2.25 for 4" pots, $5.25 for 6" pots. As usual, nothing labeled, and the stock changes from time to time. Not much at all larger than 6", just one row of 1gal pots lined up outside. If your experience with succulent buying is limited to Home Depot or boutique nurseries, then you will probably be thrilled by the rows upon rows of plants lined up like little soldiers. If you need a large quantity of small plants for favors/gifts, this is not a bad place to go. But there are lots of other places like this in SD County, and many are either cheaper or carry labeled plants of specific varieties. And if you're landscaping, you will probably want to go somewhere that carriers larger sizes. You should also know before visiting that the nursery is not even remotely ADA-compliant. If you manage to get out of the dirt parking lot (which was muddy when we went, a total nightmare), the aisles are far too narrow to navigate with a wheelchair, with hoses strewn everywhere. They are probably too narrow even for many large people to walk through... yikes! read more

I needed over 40 tiny succulents to give away as party favors for a Bridal Shower. I heard about Roots on Yelp. After visiting 2 Walmarts, 2 Home Depots and Evergreen Nursery, I went to Roots. They have an AMAZING and DIVERSE selection of HEALTHY succulents and the prices are extremely affordable! The 2 inch succulents are 75 cents each, the next size plants are $3 (I think) and the large ones are $5. The owner's daughter, Lady, and her staff were very helpful. I actually found this nursery on Instagram and decided to check them out while I was in the area! A few other reviewers mentioned it was confusing trying to figure out where to go, they must have resolved that issue since then because I had zero problems :) the entrance road to the nursery is dirt and clearly marked with a sign that says "North Country Roots Nursery" and an arrow pointing up the road. It might look like you're going the wrong way but you're not!! You'll be driving on the right side of a chain link fence and see the greenhouses on the other side, when you get to the top of the road you'll be on the property. There was ample parking at the top of the hill right next to a greenhouse with the same sign as mentioned before at an open greenhouse flap. The greenhouse was HUGE!! Lady was there to greet us and gave us a quick breakdown of the prices. Everything they had was so so beautiful and well cared for! My boyfriend was watching me shop and commented on the fact that I looked like I was in heaven. They have such a large assortment! A very good variety in succulent types and sizes. Their prices were phenomenal as well; 75 cents for a 2 inch that's usually $2.78 at Lowe's. In the attached picture, the 2 Lolas, the small red-tipped white succulent, the small blue and green succulent, the red California Sunset that was cut out of the top of the pic, and the black and pink chroma all came from this nursery. My total added up to $8! Lady was so kind and helpful, I can't wait to go back and shop with them! I love giving my money to nurseries that have more than earned the good business! read more

What a great find!!! I was looking for a source of small pots for $2 or less. This nursery was AMAZING! I also wanted variety with types not seen in Home Depot. I was not disappointed. So many types and they were in perfect condition. I bought 1/2 2" and 1/2 4" pots. I wish I had bought all 4" because the 2" were so tiny a delicate. They were very nice and I was like a kid in a candy store. I will be back and it was so nice to be able to get so many without spending a whole paycheck like I would have elsewhere. I used GPS to get there. Their driveway is an unpathed road. Had to call someone to get to the public nursery. Parking is confusing. I have to admit. The first time I went I never could find the public enterance so I gave up and left. I'm glad I went a second time. They had a huge selection of very small starter pots to not bigger than a quarter gallon. Pricing was very reasonable. $0.75 for the small starter pots. Big selection but nothing out of the ordinary. I was happy to purchase from local company. The young lady working was very sweet and helpful. The public retail area is in a large greenhouse. It's kept very clean and organized. I love this place! I wish they were open on the weekends!! I got all this stuff for $40. The most expensive plants were the rainbow succulent and what I call a "pea plant" were 10-15 each and all the other were under 1.50! I will definitely be back. Just went for the first time yesterday and I probably won't be back. They have cheap prices compared to Home Depot and high end nurseries with $100 pots but it's on par with other nurseries in the area. First, they overcharged me on my order. I was willing to chalk it up to human error because I didn't even noticed I picked pots of different sizes (they charge by pot sizes) until I got home. However, I also discovered that 1 of the 9 succulents I got was just a cutting with a rotted stem. I didn't think to check whether the plants had developed into real plants with roots (definitely didn't think that would be an issue for 4" pots) but this one was not even salvageable because the stem was cut and then left in wet soil. I can maybe propagate the leaves but I could have also done that for free without going to the nursery. I'll take responsibility for not checking better at the nursery but they shouldn't even be selling dead plants to people in the first place. So out of 9 plants, they overcharged me for 3 and sold me a dud. read more

I could not be more pleased with my experience at North County Roots. I found them on Yelp in my area and started my journey. Slightly off the beaten path, since you do drive on an unpaved road, but I was in a truck so didn't mind. The address is accurate and there is a small sign at the entrance. Once I pulled up there were two buildings with large green houses behind them. I did have to call the location to see where I went next. Leidy answered the phone and met me in the parking lot. She walked me into the large green house where I was told they just recently opened. She also told me it would be a little toasty, and it was, but nothing too uncomfortable. She asked if I wanted a basket and gave me a little run down on prices since they didn't have them up yet. From there I was a free bird walking around and look at the wide variety of succulents and cactus they offer. Leidy was very friendly and happy to answer any questions I had. I will be recommending them to everyone and will definitely be returning. read more
