Honestly the food here is super authentic and is very tasty and portion size matches the prices. You are definitely paying a little more than you usually are but the size of each dish and dim sum are quite larger than usual. I've been going to sun fortune for awhile because north garden no longer putting out good food . But yesterday I decided maybe I should give my favorite spot another chance but again no I'm disappointed rice burnt I wish I wasn't so mad at the time to take a picture or go back to restaurant but instead I just threw my food out . I just received an order from North Garden and have never been so disappointed with Chinese food. They did send two fortune cookies to soya sauce packets and to plum sauce packets. They were completely covered in the juices spewing out of the main order. They neglected to send chopsticks or cutlery both of which were requested on the order. They also did not send any napkins to clean up the mess inside the bag. I ordered deluxe vegetable stir-fry which included pork chicken and shrimp. The chicken was obviously precooked and thrown in at the last minute. The shrimp was a good size and not overcooked but surrounded by a gooey ectoplasm kind of sauce. The flavour of the vegetables and the meat we're absolutely disgusting. Like it was cooked last week in frozen until the day some poor schmuck ordered it. I also ordered a side dish of barbecue pork. Aside from having no noticeable seasoning, it was edible albeit unpleasant to eat. I can salvage the barbecue pork by cutting it up and making it into a soup. There is positively nothing about the food that I received that evoked the term fresh. If you enjoy Chinese food once in a while as I do please do not order from this restaurant. Sending out food of this calibre will only help to destroy this restaurant's reputation. read more

Another good find on low budget Chinese breakfast. Noodle soup and a dim sum dish for less then $7. Milk tea is $2 for hot and $3 for cold. I recommend not to order the drink. Just drink water. Spend the extra $2 or $3 on coffee would be a better choice as the milk tea taste like water + milk. Noodle soup don't expect much for that price. Broth and the toppings are great but the rice noodle was way too mushy. Chicken feet is good. Will come back for the price if I am on a tight budget. The lady, I think she's the manager, is soooooo nice and professional. She came to me and check up on the food which I never see this type of service in any Chinese restaurant in Winnipeg. Another favorite place for dim sum. This place is always busy so you know it has good food. You do have to order the dim sum dishes on an order sheet but they do give you a menu complete with pictures, if you need help. It's located by the University of Manitoba and the city's football stadium so this place gets packed easily. Parking is a pain. There are limited spots in front due to the restaurant located in a strip mall. There is additional parking behind the auto shop behind the strip mall, but then it's a long trek back to the restaurant. North Garden is not my fave for Chinese dinners but for dim sum, it's nice that you can make reservations on the weekend and get a table without too long of a wait. The price and quality of the dim sum is really good compared to the larger Chinatown competitor. For three people, our bill came out to a total of $35 after tax and tips and we still had some stuff to take home. I like their dim sum combos ($10.45) - there are three combos to choose from. I like combo c, which includes 2 of each item: shrimp dumplings (har gaw), shiu mai dumplings (pork), pan fried pork dumplings, BBQ pork buns and deep fried shimp dumplings. To me, that's more than enough for one person and if you have two people, just add on a couple of smaller dim sum dishes or get some noodles or rice dishes to add on. Their steamed scallop dumplings ($3.95) is a little misleading in the name as it's really just a shrimp dumpling with a thin slice of scallop on top but it's still good. Their dumplings, no matter which one you get is stuffed generously. The dumpling skin is pretty much similar to most other dim sum places. I do enjoy their BBQ pork buns - soft and fluffy buns with a not too sweet interior. The pan fried taro root cake ($2.95) had a good flavour and wasn't too greasy. Service is pretty decent. Parking is a little tough near the restaurant but there's more parking against the fence just past the Pita Pit. read more

Hmm...not sure why the bad reviews, cause I think North Garden is one of the better dim sum restaurants in Winnipeg. I came here on Labour Day, expecting a lineup and I got...a lineup. Wasn't too long though, as I arrived at the tail end of lunch. It's definitely a popular place though likely because it's close to the university; there was a consistent lineup in the hour or so I dined here. If you're dining by yourself and are unfamiliar with dim sum, I suggest the dim sum combo. It gives you the staple dim sum items all for under $11. Since I'm familiar with the dim sum process, I ordered different dim sum items from the dim sum list. I ordered the shui mai, steamed sticky rice, steamed beef ball, steamed beef omasa, steamed squids in curry sauce, and steamed rice roll with beef and cilantro. I actually found everything to taste very good for Winnipeg standards, especially the beef omasa and steamed squids. I sorta wish they didn't use the same beef for the beef balls and steamed beef rice roll, but I guess it was to be expected. Service wasn't the best, but that might've been because of the increased demand as it was the only place in the area open on Labour Day. I would've given this place 3.5 stars if the current rating was 2.5; I think North Garden should be rated a little higher than that. read more

I was really happy to find a place for good Chinese food in Winnipeg!! I would have given this place 4 stars, but I wasn't too pleased with the fried rice with Chinese sausage. The sausage was not crispy enough, and the rice was too sticky...yes...rice can be too sticky...LOL! Other than that, I enjoyed the dim sum a lot. This used to be my favourite Chinese restaurant when I lived in Winnipeg, but I've really noticed that service has gone down hill here. I went for lunch with my grandmother and wife, and we waited a very long time before any one even acknowledged us once we were seated. Once we began to look through the lunch menu I noticed that it was primarily dim sum as well as combo plates with dishes that we normally ordered. So when someone finally came by I asked if we could have the dinner menu because we wanted to order multiple dishes. So the server brought us the menu and we picked our favourites. Once again we waited a while and another server came to help us. She than informed us that we couldn't order from that menu because the night cook wasn't here. This really made no sense as these dishes that could apparently only be cooked at night were available for lunch in the combo platters. So we just ordered the combo plates that they obviously only wanted us to order. The food arrived and it tasted fine, except all the cauliflower was clearly past its best before date as it had these black specks on all of them. I before would recommend this place to anyone before but I can't recommend this place with all there issues with poor service and some food issues. I really hope they bring back the old north garden I loved. read more

Came here for dim sum, and I would say it is probably middle of the range compared to other dim sum places in winnipeg. It is cheaper than Kum Koon Garden. Once upon a time this may have been a good restaurant but tonight was the last time I'll go back. The past two times I've been disappointed in both the food quality and the poor service. The last straw tonight was when I ordered a dish described as braised eggplant stuffed with shrimp mousse and got eggplant with ground pork in some kind of ketchup sauce. The worst part was that they did not tell me they were substituting a dish , like they thought i wouldn't notice? When I mentioned it I was given several lame excuses, no apology and no offer to fix the situation. We were charged for steamed rice and tea where as most places don't charge. It's very unfortunate that I'm giving this restaurant 1 star (no star, if I could), since it used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant for their awesome food and great service. NOT ANYMORE! Food quality went downhill. Not only that, I FOUND 2 STRANDS OF HAIR IN THE JASMINE RICE. I made the server aware, but came billing time, they have the nerve to charge me $1.00 for the rice I didn't touch! I got so much attitude from the woman server that night and she tried to ignore my complaint. Wow. I've been here a few times before and I have to say their service is horrible and I've always shrugged it off because the food is not bad there. But on one particular occasion I did a pickup for some dumplings. It took a long time for it to come which I didn't mind waiting. But when the food was ready I asked for some hot sauce for my dumplings and she told me there was a charge of .50 cent for a tiny 1 oz of hot sauce. Now to me this is so ridiculous. I mean you go anywhere for dimsum and they have hot sauce for you at no charge right? What difference does it make if I do a takeout. Shouldn't I be getting hot sauce for free? Why is there a stupid charge for a tiny 1 oz container of sauce. I'm all about principal and always tip when I do a takeout because I work in the restaurant industry. Loved coming to this place up until my most recent visit which will be my last. We were seated and it took 45 minutes for someone to notice that our order hadn't been taken. But as soon as our server arrived and took our order we got over that wait time. We ordered the chow mein as we always do and the crispy ginger beef along with a few other things. The chow mein came out with uncooked noodles, they were literally crispy. When we called our server to say that they could not do anything about it. So we asked to speak to the manager who refused to take the dish back and claimed it was our fault, failing to admit that the kitchen had made a mistake and forgot to cook the noodles. Not to mention she said that it was too expensive to take the dish back as it would result in a loss of money . She was a complete utter Bitch about it. The crispy ginger beef was like eating beef jerky smothered in teriyaki sauce, excessively chewy and barely any beef.
