The futon was a very comfortable as a couch. There was a microwave, mini fridge and toaster with a small table. The office has a bag of ice available per room. Grand Marais has had a great deal of snow and the owners set out bales of hay for the deer. The deer come in frequently through out the day. There were also a few turkeys. But if a quiet, clean, no-frills cottage retreat sounds like a good vacation base camp, you can do a lot worse than Woods. Michigan has a lot of small, older rental cabin resorts and these vary widely in the level of maintainence they receive. Woods stands up very well among these. The interior is spartan but clean and doesn't show a lot of obvious wear and tear. The bathroom was clean, though quite small. The hot water supply was a bit limited--after one of us showered, it took quite a while before there was enough for the other. There wasn't much counter space in the kitchen area, and the gas stove had basically two settings--full blast and slightly less than full blast. Not a great problem if all you need to do is heat something up, but if you need to simmer something for a while or pan fry anything, there's a high risk you'll scorch it. All that said, the inconveniences we encountered in the cabin certainly didn't put a damper on the trip. It was a satisfactory place to sleep, eat, and wash. And the view of Lake Superior out the window and direct access to the beach compensated for any shortcomings at Woods. There was a stairway directly behind our cabin leading down to a boardwalk over a marshy area between the cabins and the beach. It took about five minute to walk to the water, but the walk itself was pleasant. The beach is open to the public, but was far less crowded than the beaches right in Grand Marais. So, I'll give three stars for the cabin itself, five for the view and general setting, for a four-star overall rating.

The beds were comfortable, one of them was brand new! The bathroom was small but there was excellent water pressure and good, hot water. Our cabin had all the basics including all kitchen ware, a coffee maker, hair dryer, TV/VCR/DVD player and alarm clocks. Outdoors, our yard included a screened in attached porch, fire pit (wood included), picnic table, chairs and a cafe table and a clothesline. The property sits on the edge of Lake Superior and has private beach access. The beach has beautiful Great Lakes sand and cool, clear water. The beach is lined with adirondack chairs and they have inner tubes for the kids. The owners work hard to maintain their property and therefore can be a bit persnitickity about their cabins and property. Don't be put off; this place is terrific and they are the reason why. Do bring your own marshmallow forks; it's the one thing we didn't find. And, do your grocery shopping before you get to Paradise; the grocery store is a whole different ball game!

Went there again last week, and I'm wondering if any work has been done on it since. The Dunes makes a poor first impression: peeling paint and loose shingles made me uneasy about what I would find behind the door. And I found exactly what the exterior portended. Badly scuffed and scratched walls and floor, grimy throw rugs, dingy furniture. Beds are very small, and certainly on the soft side--whenever I slept on my back I woke up with a sore tailbone. But the worst thing about the room was the bathroom. It had a strong smell that my wife described as "armpitty." The shower floor was scummy when we got there, and I made a point of wearing sandals every time I used it. Water temperature was very hard to adjust in the shower, and it took a long time for water to get hot (although the hot water never gave out once it actually was flowing). We're definitely returning to Grand Marais, but are already looking into other lodging options. This is one you shouldn't consider.

That's the only semi-negative thing I will say about this place, The hotel is nice, the workers were nicer, the rooms were clean and the halls were quiet. Bananas (finally! after 9 days in Michigan hotels, I was beginning to think there was a law against them) mini omelets, bagels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, turkey sausage and a pancake machine. The real star of this hotel is the back patio view. Sitting on their deck enjoying the views of Lake Superior while having a cold beverage is pretty amazing. The rooms with lake views have their own balconies or you can be a cheap ass like me and share the patio with the others.

It was a nice money saver to not need to go out for breakfast in the morning. We opted for the cheaper room facing the parking lot.
