The first time I did it, it felt like the hardest thing over ever done. I recently went back and did it again (after years of mountaineering in Colorado) and it felt very easy. To put it in perspective, it's a long hike (13-14miles) with over 5K elevation. However it's a gradual gain and only a class one! No equipment needed. So as long as you hike a lot and have good endurance it's completely doable and very low risk. Just bring lots of water and food! The view at the top is soo breathtaking and makes it worth all of the hard work. It feels like you can see every mountain in Oregon and you're just right next to middle and north sister. It's incredible! There's a gorgeous lake on the way up called teardrop lake. It's a nice place to rest before the last final push which is the hardest part. Once you get to the top, it's an easy 1/4 mile walk to the true summit. Don't miss it!

We were spending the day in Sisters and wanted to do a hike with our 4 and 8 year old kids. We…read moredrove up early and got there a little after 7 am. There is a small parking lot out front with 2 handicap stalls. We were able to do the hike pretty quick with them, about 15 min. There is gravel/sand with a wide path. It's curves through the woods with vegetation around. Three points to stop and look. The last view was nice of the sisters and broken top. No water access from this hike but the other, longer, trail has it. The kids liked the hike and enjoyed running through and finding walking sticks. Two restrooms at the beginning - gender neutral. Shady for the most part with a few sun rays coming through. We used some bug spray so no issues for us. On the way out we saw a coyote running across the road. Stay safe!!

Nice, easy hike with fabulous views!…read more The trailhead is an easy and pretty drive from Sisters. We'd seen some reviews for this trail and decided to try it out while in town. The trail head has a decent sized lot and toilets, and the trail itself is well marked. It's a loop, and according to the sign taking the trail to the right was supposedly a bit rougher...we didn't find it so. We did the full loop, along which you're provided multiple overlooks. The main overlook towards the mountains is large, with views down to the river below as well. The whole path is easy and not much of a slope. We decided to take an offshoot trail down to the river after we left the overlook. It was a nice, narrow trail that zig zagged down. There were other trails that crossed it at the bottom that weren't marked, so we just used the sounds of the water to get there. A very peaceful, easy trail with beautiful views of the Sisters.

This is a great paved path that takes you out of town. This path travels along the Deschutes River…read moreand parallels Colorado Drive for the first part of the trail. As you start to leave the urban areas out of town, this trail will take you out to Forest Service land where you can link up to the Phil's trail Complex via the COD trail. The path itself starts on the top of an old canyon allowing for some great views of the Deschutes River and the Old Mill District. I always take this path when I am heading to school from the Old Mill. There are a couple side trails along this path once you get to the bend in the Deschutes River that are definitely worth stopping and checking out. The view at these trails is unique and perfect for a panorama shot. The view is on top of some interesting rock faces and can be a great way to scout how busy the river is in the summer. If you happen to be staying in the Old Mill District, this path is a great way to kill some time with some great views of Bend.

Upon arriving at the parking for the park…read morehowever we got disoriented a great deal and went to the opposite side of the parking for the falls trying to find them. In other words the signage to reach these falls aren't the best. You have to walk out the way you drove in. There is a sign along that road which directs you off onto a path but it doesn't really tell you how far to go. Luckily when we were on the other side of the park someone asked if we were looking for them and we were told that you had to go under the bridge where the highway is in order to get to them. You go a little ways still and then the falls are located at last along the river...just listen for the sound of them and you will find them. Was it worth after getting lost and slightly frustrated until we reaches them? Absolutely it was worth it. At the time we were here parking was still free to utilize but there were signs saying that parking rates were on the way so that is definitely something to be aware of.

Depending on your experience level and head-space, this is either an extremely heady "hike" or an…read moreeasy climb. This is 99% a hike, but once you near the summit, you will definitely have to do some rock climbing moves. They are easy moves, easier than anything you'd find in a rock gym, but the rock is a little loose. This is the Oregon Cascades after all, where the mountains feel like they are made out of epoxy and kitty litter! The summit views are tremendous though. Almost all the Oregon Cascades are visible (from N-to-S): Hood, Jefferson, The Three Sisters (this is an excellent place to photograph South Sister), Bachelor, etc. The best views though, are peering right down into the massive summit crater of Broken Top. Bring a wide-angle lens! Expect this to take a full day. I recommend starting EARLY. (before sunrise)

This is one of my favorite mountains to climb, but also one of the more dangerous hikes I have been…read moreon. This mountain looks as if it has blown its top, but according to a couple of geology classes I have taken, the cone at the top has been eroded by glaciers. Which is almost as cool. Another noticeable feature to this mountain is its location compared to the other mountains in the Cascade Range in this area. The Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, Mount Jefferson, and Mount Thielson are all in the same linear path. But Broken Top is west of this path. What is important about that is that when you get to the top of Broken Top you are actually given a different perspective of the other mountains. You are looking at the Cascade Moutain Range as if you are flying above them. Now if you combine this with the fact that you can drive pretty close to the base of this mountain. You have a pretty awesome combination. There are a couple ridges that you can take to get to the top of Broken Top. I have only been on the southern ridges. From what I am told, this is not the safest path to take. I don't recommend it unless you are an experienced climber. My friends and I took this path because it is the shortest. The downside is that it is fairly steep and does not lead you to officially summit the top. We both had some close calls on this ridge. The terrain is so steep that once you misstep and start sliding you have a really hard time stopping. I had started to slide on this ridge a couple of times and was very lucky to have caught my arm on some rocks before sliding off of a cliff. Next time we will be sure to take the ridge to the north. From what I am told, it is longer but much safer and takes you to the official summit. The hike itself is very beautiful. You start above the treeline somewhat and follow the trailhead. You will find an old canal and some melting glaciers in the summertime. Once you enter the valley you will see that you are inside the bowl of Broken Top. Everyone I have talked to seems to all agree that this reminds you of the video game Halo. As the bowl looks like the giant halo around the planet that you see. From here you will want to pick the ridge you plan on climbing up. I recommend passing on the south ridge and walk around to the north ridge. This trail is located in the three sisters wilderness and it important to remember that help is not close. So you will want to be extra careful. As you may not even have cell coverage. The terrain and the ecology around here are fragile, so you will want to be respectful and travel along durable paths and not leave any trash on the ground. Obey the rules and make safe decisions and you will have a five-star experience. Shevlin park is somewhere we would visit every summer growing up when visiting family in the area…read more They have great trails, fishing, picnicking, and even slow spots where you can get in the water. Shevlin park has a teepee that you can check out and go inside of, they have more than one trail, good for bike riding, dog walking, fishing. I remember having picnics here as a kid and I still come back as an adult when in the area. They trails are low impact and fairly flat.

We absolutely love nature, and knew we had to try it. At first upon arriving, I feared there would be no parking at 11:00 a.m. However, the lot was only halfway full which was nice. The trails were laid out on the trail map a little ways past the shelter on the left, but there was a discrepancy between what the trail map said and the websites listed in terms of trail names and trail lengths. So, we decided to forge our own path. We took the main loop around. The conifer trees and contrast with the desert landscape were beautiful, and the creek shots were stunning.

I stopped by this park with my partner and his family while we were visiting Bend. It's a nice…read morelittle area with a few spots to sit. The big attraction is obviously the whitewater rapids, which had some river surfers and kayaks going through. There is plenty of street parking by the park. It's all free. There is also a public bathroom in the park, but I didn't use it so I can't say how clean it is. This is a pretty peaceful and surprisingly clean park. It's definitely worth a trip if you're looking for a chill and peaceful way to spend some time.

Pretty cool and secluded spot for an easy hike along the scenic McKenzie Pass…read more We decided to pull off and check out the short hike to Hand Lake last weekend. There's a wide shoulder on which to park, big enough for 5 or so cars, right across from the trailhead. The trailhead sign provides info, as well as the free self-issue Wilderness permits for access. (Short and easy form) The trail is short and well-maintained, easy for most anyone. After trekking a bit through the gorgeous trees it opens up to the lake at the small cabin shelter. Right now it's more of a palm only, as the water pool is small this time of year, but you can still see the dry fingers. Nice views of the Three Sisters from the middle. It's a short trail, definitely more of just a leg-stretcher only as you travel along the McKenzie, but a cool setting and I'm sure much more of a scene when the waters up.
