This gym has such a friendly, welcoming vibe. It's funky, down-to-earth, and full of character in a way that feels genuinely comfortable instead of polished and intimidating. The front desk staff is always really nice, and the trainers seem awesome overall. I can definitely recommend mine, Will. He's knowledgeable, astute, goal-focused, and encouraging. It also feels like a genuinely respectful space. I haven't seen anyone leering or acting like a jerk - quite the opposite. And people are good about reracking weights and wiping down equipment. Parking can be a little bit of a situation at times, and people sometimes seem to wait around for spots for some reason, but there's actually plenty of parking diagonally across the street in the garage. Street parking is also often free or just a couple of bucks, so it's very manageable once you know the options. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this spot. Great vibe, great trainers, and solid equipment. There's even a hot tub in the locker room. It's not a polished, spa-looking place, but honestly that's part of the charm. I've been a member for a while now, and the level of care from the staff really stands out. They're always friendly, helpful, and genuinely welcoming, which makes a big difference in how it feels to walk through the door. One thing I really value is how well this gym supports my fitness goals--no matter how they've shifted over time. Whether I'm coming in early before work or later in the evening, training with a personal trainer or doing my own thing, the space, staff, and setup all make it easy to stay consistent and feel supported. Been working out at LAC for over a year now. I mainly go to lift. I'm actually leaving a review now because I came across a transphobic post on FB where the poster was linking to her (I'm guessing now removed) yelp review. This gym is unassuming, has the important necessities, continues to reinvest back into the facility, and all the staff have been nothing but kind. My one drawback is that the classes and their timing aren't great for me; id love to see more yoga in the evenings. Otherwise, I'm happy to went with this gym read more

I've been going here for about 3 years now and I've really enjoyed my time here. I work out in the mornings around 6am and I like that it's never super busy at that time. They have a wide selection of cardio equipment, free weights, squat racks, and have several separate work out rooms downstairs too. They recently underwent a small renovation installing new carpet and redid the layout - I don't think it's as good as before as all the machines and free weight areas now feel much more cramped and pushed together which is frustrating. Other than that though, the service has always been super friendly and helpful. I think it's well priced and affordable for what you're getting. The clientele is older and you don't get a lot of people that take up sections of the gym for hours at a time looking at themselves in the mirror (or posting on social media). They have a parking lot with designated overflow parking for the busier times. Like I said, this is a solid place and I've really enjoyed my time here. read more

The best gym I've ever been at, over 20 years now, in Sacramento, SD, SF, now Portland. Staff are so kind - consistently excellent customer service skills. No blaring music, which often forces people to increase the volume on their headphones and risk ear injury. It is amazing how few gyms respect the importance of keeping the music volume low/off. Ample space and squat racks for people to get in and complete a workout, even during peak gym hours. There is also more privacy with having multiple rooms for lifting weights. Been going here for a long time, at least 15 years. I keep coming back for two reasons - the steam room and Bill at the front desk. The dedicated men's steam room is a real treat after a run or working out (after a quick shower first, of course). And with Bill, he's been there forever and seems to know everyone that walks in. Became a member here in September of 2024 and so glad I did. It's a friendly, low key environment with great classes. I've been going to the Saturday morning Yin Yoga class since the beginning. It's taught by Jennifer who makes everyone feel welcome, offers alternative poses if you need it, and has essential oil for those wanting it during the last Shavasana pose of the class (no teacher has ever offered that in the many yoga classes I've done over the years). Making this class a regular weekend routine is like a gift to myself after a long, stressful work week. read more

If you hate going to the gym because of the stereotypical gym people that make you feel uncomfortable; you'll love it here. If you're a "gym bro" looking for a place to judge people and get attention... this isn't your gym. Everyone that works here is so nice and welcoming. I don't remember the name of the guy that I see at the desk every morning but he is so great and welcoming, they don't make you feel any pressure and they truly want to help you find what works best for you. Also Clay is an amazing personal trainer that will make you feel at home and comfortable no matter what level you are at. I have taken a lot of time away from my health journey and have struggled to find the motivation to get back at it. Starting this year they changed that you only can come in once a day and only stay 3 hours max. That's not what I signed up at the beginning. And the gym is getting crowned with a few machines. I am really enjoying my time here at LAC! Highlights include: Lift Class with Megan, super friendly staff, clean free towels that never seem to run out, cleaning spray for equipment everywhere, plenty of cardio steps, treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals. If you are a racquet, squash or handball fan this is a great place to go - they have several courts and active groups/teams. A couple courts have transformed to a half basketball court, and 2 workout studios. There are some newer weight machines that are super easy to use and adjust, room for stretching, all the free weights you could want, and a heavy bag also! The small whirlpool and sauna in the women's locker room is perfect during cold weather. The locker room is spotless, and people are constantly cleaning all around the club. And yes they serve beer! read more

I just recently joined this "club." When I think club, I think amenities. This place advertises towel service, steam room, hot tub, and all the things that go with just a gym. A few days ago when I came, the heater for the hot tub was broken. Today, no towels (because their dryer belt broke). One of their assault bikes has a seat that you can't sit on because you fall off. I get things not working sometimes, but this seems to be a consistent theme with Lloyd. I'm going to ride out my membership here, because I paid for a year up front. I don't mind equipment being a little older. But I paid more than a "commercial" gym for an upgrade, which to me includes regular, functioning things. After my year, I'm going elsewhere. Not sure how this place is staying in business except the loyalty of some old-timers, but don't expect it to last. Fix your stuff. Still giving two stars because it's more chill than the gym across the street. read more

I was referred by a friend. I like this place so far! It's not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but it's got heart, soul, and everything I need to show up consistently. If you're tired of judgmental vibes or upselling nightmare gyms, this locally-owned spot might be your next workout sanctuary. The crowd is refreshingly diverse, with lots of LGBTQ2SIA+, ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American), and (especially) Boomers/elderly folks. The gym is low-key and down-to-earth; no one's flexing. I feel comfortable being myself. Rooms are busy but packed with a huge selection of gear, from updated cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, rowers) and free weights to cable machines, racquetball, etc. The lighting is the biggest buzzkill. Harsh fluorescents with inconsistent tones and a lack of natural light makes some areas feel dungeon-y. The cardio zone, in particular, could pop with warmer bulbs (maybe even white-painted ceilings), a circadian lighting system, or faux skylights. While much of the equipment feels updated, some pieces show their age in spots. TVs are on and plentiful, which isn't good for me. I'd happily trade TVs for visually quiet blank wall. Fewer signs on the walls would make for a cleaner appearance. Parking's a mixed bag despite the free lot: if it's full, street spots in the Lloyd District are scarce during rush times, and the nearby Lloyd Center spots are risky. I've heard too many car break-in stories to chance it. read more

I've enjoyed this place for years. Good unpretentious place to work out with decent machines. And a great space to relax after with a sauna and hot tub but I was there recently and they got rid of all the benches outside of the sauna so now you have to just stand around for five minutes to cool off before you shower again and with a bad knee that's no good. So it went from very relaxing to not relaxing at all which defeats the purpose of winding down for mental health. Talked to some others and they were very disappointed too. After several years of too much computer jockeying, I so appreciated trainer Justin for setting me up with a series of machines and weights that have helped with strength and energy. It's not an easy thing to make yourself vulnerable to a stranger so when I met Chase at LAC, I knew pretty quickly that she and I would make a solid team. When I decided to look for a personal trainer, I set up a handful of interviews with trainers in the area. Chase was the only one to ask me how I was feeling about my pending journey, beyond my fitness goals. I really appreciated that. She acknowledged that beginning a fitness journey can be incredibly daunting and overwhelming and by doing that, she created a space for me to be vulnerable and really communicate what, exactly, I was hoping to achieve and what I thought was holding me back (e.g., eating habits, sleep, etc). Because, if you really want results, you have to address fitness from multiple angles. It's not just about calories in/calories out. Especially for women. In the past 4 months, I'm down 42 pounds. A feat that I NEVER thought was possible. During my first interview, I told Chase my goal was 50 pounds. Well, I'm nearly there but more importantly, my life has changed for the better in so many other ways. My sleep is so much better. My mood is far more stable--not prone to the ups/downs of a wildly out of control metabolism. I feel balanced. And that feels pretty damn good. Like me, Chase is a woman of color and I am proud to endorse her to other women in our community looking for a safe space to be supported and encouraged on your fitness and wellness journey. read more

No pool is the big thing missing I guess, but lots and lots of racketball courts if that's your jam. And also a little bar with beer on tap. I hope this place survives the COVID pandemic. This is based on my attempt to have a tour and personal training session, as I was looking for a new gym and new trainer. I reached out via Yelp and got a text from Nick (who I now know is the owner). We discussed setting up a tour and free session of personal training. I arrived at our arranged time, and well, I left not impressed. The first thing I noticed was the stale sweat-sock odor and dirty carpet. A sign "we're low on towels/ 1 only" was on the counter. Towels are the size of hand-towels and look to be the quality of a shop towel. They offer "executive towels" for an upcharge, but I didn't see any to comment here on what that actually looks like. Nick gave me the tour. The facility is in need of a deep cleaning and general maintenance. The walls are dinged up, needs paint, machines are older and very close together. I counted three spray bottles of disinfectant upstairs, which isn't a lot with the number of machines around. There are not a lot of mirrors to check your form in the gym (just one wall in one area). I did not see any water available upstairs. Downstairs had an old-old-old-school drinking fountain. Nick wanted me to know there was beer on tap, "unusual for a Portland gym." I dunno, but it wasn't unusual for my LA gym. The locker room wasn't super dirty, but also didn't feel super clean. The lockers themselves were pretty banged up and everything just seemed....tired and worn out. You have to provide your own lock. My personal locker looked like someone had beat the shit out of it, and the metal was all bent up where I put my (borrowed) lock. Classes don't happen very early or very late, so with a weekday 8-5 work schedule, there was really nothing. I asked about training and was told by Nick that didn't do training anymore. I wasn't sure where this was going, as I thought I had scheduled a tour and hour with a trainer. He asked how often I wanted to work with a trainer.... I said 1x/week... and Nick likes people to do personal training 2x/week, or do 1x/week with small group. But I want to meet my trainer... and that the trainers there tend to text more than anything else... and still haven't met my trainer.... and then they don't use any apps for fitness or diet tracking, I should use an old-school notebook.... and I still haven't seen my trainer. I was introduced to a trainer who was leading a small group training. I was told I could join that group if I wanted. Nick advises me to "check things out, get a feel for it, and come see me when you're done." Where is my personal training session? I asked the small-group trainer upstairs, he knew nothing about it. I said maybe I misunderstood our text, but checked my phone later, nope... we were supposed to have an hour with a trainer. The small group trainer talked with me a bit. Showed me some exercises to try with modifications for my spinal injury. He left to work with his small group. I left shortly after that. When I went downstairs, Nick was busy talking to someone else. A girl at the counter gave me a price card. Then I left. I'm used to more of a clean and upscale experience. I've been a member at Spectrum and Equinox.... I haven't found an amazing full size gym here. Still looking. In the meantime, I'm starting with a small studio. Hardly any extra amenities, but it's at least super clean, not cluttered, and has focused trainers, and that's what's most important. read more

I've pretty much switched over completely to climbing for my exercise, but I ended up missing weight lifting. Through my insurer I was able to get a cheap membership that worked at several of the gyms around town. Of the gyms I've now visited, Lloyd Athletic Club has been one of the better ones. There is nothing new or flashy about this place. It is an old school gym with the basic equipment you need to get a good, full body workout. And really that is all I need. I don't need the newest equipment which will Bluetooth connect to my phone or something. I'm not going to the gym to be seen. I just want to do my work out and get the hell out. This place is perfect for that because it is never insanely packed, even at peak times. Actually it seems like their biggest draw is the racquetball courts. I've never tried it, but now am considering it. Also the locker room is pretty damn great. Sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi. read more

I love this gym. It is a well preserved time capsule of quality gyms circa 1980, which is when I was heavy into lifting, and so it takes me back. So much going on there that you can take or leave. I go in for about 30-45 mins every few days to do my workout thing. No friction. Can converse with people or not. It's great! Staff is laid back, and good. Can have a free coffee at the counter/bar if you get there early. Highly recommend! read more

I started back to regular gym workouts post COVID. I am 74 and decided to schedule individual fitness, core and flexibility sessions with Megan, one of the club's trainers. After 10 sessions I feel great, have much improved balance, strength and flexibility. If I could post a "6" rating for Megan's guidance, effective routines and patient encouragement, I certainly would. I trained with other coaches and took classes at the club from 2007 until the pandemic - Megan's coaching and knowledge is the best. I'm not one to leave reviews, but Nick and RJ went above and beyond when it came to my first day here at LAC. I was on my way to LA fitness, when I spotted a sign advertising a free day pass here and thought I'd stop by to check it out. Upon arrival I was greeted by rj and he gave myself and my girlfriend a very thorough tour of the facility while being kind, patient, and even provided a few tips for workouts, different machines/equipment, and how to use the areas properly! Had an amazing workout -- Very clean, unlike most portland gyms, and a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. Nick concluded our visit with meeting him, the owner, first hand and went over all costs and benefits, answering any questions and concerns we had. Not to mention a banging deal, especially considering this beautiful facility. Do not let anyone fool you otherwise, 5 years of best gym in portland is well deserved. Could not have asked for a better experience, truly! One more thing - no slick salesmen, hidden fees, bs policies. Price advertised is technically true but horribly misleading. The front desk employees were rude and clearly didn't want to be there. In my opinion, the place has this dark, musty vibe that is just really creepy. Beware leaving negative reviews - the owners will want to tell how they feel about it.
