Working with Northern Lights was the epitome of "does the END justify the MEANS". In the case of my project, the answer is a resounding, undeniable NO! I absolutely regret having used Northern Lights. A quick summary for those that peruse reviews: 1.) Final product looks great 2.) Getting the estimate and contract signed was seamless 3.) Remainder of the process was a disaster - poor project management, dismissive customer service, unresponsive owner, multiple errors as compared to contractual expectations, recommendations to accept shoddy work, pestering for payment when work hadn't been completed For more details, continue reading... No one can take away from the beauty of the final result. They use quality products, have extremely skilled operators, workers, and/or contractors doing the work. The people doing the work are knowledgeable and (for the vast majority) take pride in the work they are doing. As for the process, the early steps of getting a contract went smoothly with great responsiveness from the owner who organized the details. I signed the contract and waited for the work to start. The date moved multiple times then with absolutely no notice (less than 24 hours), the crew was onsite. The "project manager" arrived and said (direct transcription here) "So, what are we doing in this project?". The owner apparently had not communicated with ANYONE else in his company on the work to complete. Work started and it progressed quickly and as progress payments were due, the office manager was undeniably on top of it. However, when I needed to get clarification on any other details for the project, she magically disappeared and only after multiple voicemails and e-mails expressing my frustration, I'd finally receive a call from the owner. Most of these calls were handled in such a way to state that I was in the wrong or misinterpreting something (like scheduled gas company hook-up appointments being cancelled by Northern Lights) with an insincere apology for the frustration and confusion caused. Ultimately, a project that was promised to be 10-14 days took 7 weeks to complete and only through personal persistence chasing individuals from Northern Lights and taking lead on communication between the gas company, irrigation company, and Northern Lights. The "project manager" was mostly absent and communication of project details happened directly between myself and the worker on-site doing the work. Often messages to the "project manager" turned defensive as he didn't understand the current state of the project and could sense my frustration but maintained a stance of being "on my side". Again, no apology, simply a defensive tactic to make ME feel like I was in the wrong. If you do choose Northern Lights, my advice is to very closely and clearly document ALL expectations and communications, perform a pre-work alignment of work to be completed, expect to be the project manager, don't expect support from management or customer service, and be ready to be persistent to get what you were promised. But in the end, it'll look amazing, just as their website shows! read more

I have used Northern LIghts Landscape twice myself and referred them to my son for a third patio. They do an outstanding job in their patio design, execution of the plan and overall efficiency. Northern Lights has been mowing my lawn on and off for the last few years now. Every experience I've had with them so far has been top notch. whether I'm on the phone with the nice lady in the office or with the owner Erich, I always get my questions answered and my odd jobs scheduled. it's quite surprising that they can get out to my house so quick because I'm usually the guy who calls panicking that i don't have time to mow and the lawn looks like a hay field! this year I have them mowing once a week at a reasonable price, and I had them do some spring cleaning, mulch, etc... We hired Northern Lights to build a walkway, large granite wall and new front garden. I hadn't looked them up on Yelp previously b/c they were recommended by neighbors who had used them and were very happy with the process and results. The earlier comments surprise me - not our experience at all. Erich worked with us on the original plans (from an independent landscape architect) to fit our budget, save some money and select material we liked (we also checked out the changes with the original architect). Phil, the site manager, did a terrific job. He consulted with us whenever questions came up on either end, and provided information on maintaining the plants and irrigation. It was clear he took personal pride in making sure the finished project would be something we would all be proud of. We made some changes on-the-fly that resulted in extra charges, as we expected. Jodye was available by phone and email to answer any questions, and the finished job looks great. We would use them again without hesitation. read more

Wonderful experience...start to finish with Northern Lights. Erich came on site to meet with us just a few days after our initial call. He was great to work with and provided good ideas and input for our garden project. He gave a projected start day, and they were able to come sooner to begin. The crew we had for 3 days were respectful of us and our home, efficient, and very, very neat. Which was important to us. During the project they checked in on details and the new gardens and paths are absolutely beautiful. We couldn't be happier. Bought a cord of seasoned hardwood from them. Price was reasonable (esp given that this is February) and it was delivered less than an hour after I called. Despite a snowbank in the way, the delivery guy was able to back the truck into my yard and dump the wood right in front of the wood shed... so terrific that we don't have to haul the entire pile 10' before stacking it like we have every time wood has been delivered here by other people. (I have never understood why they can't dump the wood where we ask them to but apparently this was no problem for the Northern Lights guy). Much appreciated!! read more

Horrible!!! Zero stars. He used crap soil and not much of it after I paid for high quality soil. New lawn is full of weeds and rocks, no wonder since the "loam" was so sandy and rocky. Hopefully one of his other customers got the good soil that I paid for. And even though I watered it faithfully, Eric wouldn't stand behind his "warranty" because I let the grass die. read more

Northern Lights is good in my book. I ordered two yards of stone for a nice fire pit. They brought it next day, gave me some money off, andddd was very kind over the phone. When they delivered the stone, it did look a little short of two yards, and after completing the pit you could tell it wasn't two yards, but I decided to call and see what they say, sure enough the Eric with no hesitation apologized and said they would bring another yard to make up for it the next day. The next day I received another call from Eric apologizing again and explained that the rock was on its way. It turns out he actually sent TWO yards instead of one. I know the previous reviews were iffy, but its clear Northern Lights cares about customer satisfaction and I plan on oredering from them in the future! BRAVO NLL read more

Second time customer first transaction we bought a yard of mulch to do our yard. A yard always took care of it but this time we needed more I feel we were cheated, well we ordered wood and was not at all enough ordered 2 cord we stacked it and barely got a 1 1/2 cord. My interactions with Northern Lights and Erich Mueller go back a few years. I have finally reached a resolution and I feel compelled to share with you my opinions on this business. In short, this is an awful business, doesn't care about its customers and is only looking for ways to bill you more. There is a very long back story here and I only reached a settlement with Northern Lights through legal action. During that legal action, in the discovery phase, Erich admitted to using photos on his website from homes where he didn't perform the work. That's called deceptive advertising. He also couldn't provide paid invoices for damages he claimed in legal filings. That could be called fraud. Regardless, Northern Lights and I have now reached a settlement whereby Northern Lights will pay me $25,000 by Christmas or be in default and face significantly larger penalties. So, Northern Lights engages in deceptive marketing, fraud and 2 legal actions from customers (mine and another case in New Hampshire). If you do business with this firm, your initial payment may very well become my settlement payment as the financial statements Erich provided during discovery leads me to believe that Northern Lights has very little cash. Do business with this firm and this person at your own risk. You have been warned. read more
