There's a few other things in the area nearby including some gas stations and restaurants, and the Prarie Museum that's pretty much within walking distance of this monument. So if you're driving along and planning stops to fill up or grab a bite, this little town is a great place to do that and pick up a few photos while you're at it.

They have these creepy watchtowers there reminiscent of post-WWII Eastern Germany, and the coyotes at the border will give you the creeps more than any people on the planet. I've never seen so many graveyards in such a desolate region in my entire life. I accidentally left some clothes at a hotel a little east of Rugby. My one-of-a-kind green promotional Jameson shirt was one of them. If there weren't so many creepy coyotes about, I might not have done that.

The walking area in the center has the flowers. There are thousands, and that's before the succulent and cactus building. It's $10 per person, and you can pay in USD or CAD. Pro tip, if you have a card without a foreign transaction fee then pay with that. It'll make your purchases cheaper.

I've been to another peace garden before, and this is by far the better of the two. This place is huge and has a lot of great things going for it. You can camp, picnic, "hike" and take in the extreme beauty of the area. They even have a cactus garden. There was a lot of renovating and planting going on when we were here, which took away from the experience, but it was still amazing to see the care that goes into everything. Camped here back in August and loved it. The campsites were super clean and well maintained. We got…read morea site right next to the lake. I was a little worried because our campsite was in an open area near a lot of other campsites, but everyone around was super friendly. We spent most of our time fishing off the dock. Caught tons of catfish, and some bluegill. I'd recommend renting a canoe or kayak and going to the center of the lake to explore the Masonic Island. Bring bug spray though! Our puppy loved running free in their dog park and swimming at the dog beach. Overall a great place to camp, beautiful lake, and lots to do.

Get out and learn your history…read more Not all history is good, and I think it's important to recognize our past and bring the terrible to light. Fort Totten was a military post for the U.S. military, which turned into Indian schooling for Sioux children and later Chippewa and others. A lot of terrible things happened here, which involved what was referred to as Indian boarding school. Most of the children were very young and taken from their reservations to learn the American way of life. This included a harsh schedule and often times beatings/punishments for "misbehaving." Yes, they learned many skills but weren't able to see their families and lived in the worst living conditions. They have renovated one of the buildings into a hotel where you can stay and really immerse yourself into the history here. The staff will not sugarcoat things and have great information. You get to see how differently the military versus how the Indians were treated. The staff are amazing here and have a plethora of knowledge to share. I also like that they didn't sugarcoat anything and told everything how it was. They are even still learning, renovating, and excavating the site. I don't want to call this a great place to come see because it's actually very sad, but it's a site that needs to be acknowledged and seen for what it was.

We have been waiting to go to this center ever since we heard about it coming. Growing up in the…read morearea and now having grandkids it is such a gem. We had a group of adults and kiddos from 6 months to 6 years old. We all had fun including the adults. It is obviously new but was clean and the character of it all was just fun. Be prepared for kiddos to get wet at the water feature esp if they are young. We had water up to the elbows. Tshirts on sale upstairs for the save. Finding out you could play then go have some lunch and return is also something good to be aware of. We had great help and greetings from the lovely gals at the front upon entering.
