We decided to come to Salem on a whim in August so finding something available the 3rd weekend in October actually in Salem was like winning the lottery for us. The price was decent and the reviews were great. My fiance called multiple times to confirm certain details but those calls were never returned. We arrived a few hours prior to check-in (one of his calls had been about early arrival luggage storage). Flora's daughter greeted us and helped us store our luggage so we could get some food and walk around Salem. They did not have an available bathroom for use aside from the porta potty in the driveway, which we were told is the norm for Salem anyway. That was the one and only time I had to use a porta potty, thankfully, and it was clean. Once our room was ready, we were given a code to open the key lockbox and told we were on the 3rd floor. We entered the house and took the narrow high stairs all the way up to find 2 rooms... neither of which are numbered. We chose correctly the first time and started to get settled. The ceilings are super low (we are very tall humans), a queen sized bed with 1 side table, a sofa with a side table, a dresser with a TV, a dinette for 2, an ottoman, a non-working fireplace, and a very large bathroom. The bed was comfy enough and we eventually figured out how to turn the heat on. The water pressure in the shower was fantastic and the temp was perfect. The first day we arrived it rained like crazy nonstop. We were completely soaked through. They do not offer use of their clothes dryer so we were relegated to using a small house fan to dry our clothes out. The next morning we couldn't figure out exactly what we were supposed to do for breakfast because the book in the room has conflicting info - either show up during these hours for hot food or text. The first morning there was the most delicious frittata I have E V E R had. There is also a selection of all kinds of other quick breakfast items. Our last morning we went down during the set hours, but there was no breakfast so we text asking for hot breakfast. Flora ran to the kitchen to scramble eggs and cook sausage (we weren't given an option - she just cooked). The eggs were great but the sausage was still frozen so that was a bummer. She seemed put out by having to make us breakfast, which I thought was the whole premise of a bed and breakfast. And for what they charge, I definitely expected a bit more hospitality. The location of Northey Street House is wonderful. It's a quick walk to Salem Common and everything you need or want to do in town. If I had to do it again, though, I'd pick somewhere else that feels a little more homey. Otherwise we could have just stayed in a hotel with more creature comforts. read more

We stayed two days with the folks at Northey Street House. At first, we weren't sure what we had gotten ourselves into, given we were assigned a room in the attic space which required us to carry our bags up at very narrow staircase to the third floor. By the time I lugged my wife's gigantic bag to our room I thought I had just gotten off the Stairmaster! Our room was adequate-- queen sized bed, sofa, small table with two chairs, and a nice sized bathroom with a shower. The mini-split style AC keep our room nice and chilled for a solid night sleep. The following morning, we enjoyed a home cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs and three egg omelet with tons of healthy spinach! Conversation with other guests around the table, that had place settings for six, was enjoyable. Access to restaurants and tourist attractions were within 12-15-minute walk. read more

My husband and I stayed at Northey Street House 10/6/23 through 10/15/23. The location is perfect for walking to downtown and even some places outside of downtown. It's also close to the Hertz rental car location in case a rental is needed to drive further distances. Flora was a wonderful host! We stayed in the 2nd floor room...it was spacious with a large bathroom and had everything we needed. Breakfasts were delicious! We would recommend Northey Street House for anyone visiting Salem and would stay there again if we return. read more

Northey Street House had several "ups" & a couple "downs." Ups: -It's a nice location, a little off the beaten path, in a residential area, but under a 15 minute walk to almost all of Salem's attractions. -It's clean & well kept. The space really is comfortable. -The breakfast is homemade, multi-course, & really lovely. Not to mention Flora makes excellent strong coffee! -It's family friendly. Our 5.5 month old son was welcome.* Downs: -*Note the asterisk above. Yes, Northey Street House is family friendly, but comes with a child fee. Flora didn't mention this detail when I first called to inquire about rates, dates and if the property was child-friendly. Then when I phoned back to reserve, she mentioned it would be an extra $20 nightly for our baby without really justifying why. I questioned this, saying I perhaps could understand if he was older & would be having a plate at breakfast & such. But in reality he's just an infant & doesn't make a mess, etc. I asked if she'd waive the fee, but that was a no go. -The Garden Suite's bathroom shares a pocket door with the house laundry room. This was awkward to hear movement (right there) when we were in the bathroom. Also, the housekeeper knocked on the pocket door one morning when I was in the bathroom to see if we needed service as opposed to our front door. Startling and totally inappropriate in my opinion! I would have much preferred she knocked on the suite's front door. All in all, a pleasant stay...just a few hiccups here & there! read more

A relaxing weekend in Salem must have a cozy room at the Northey St House bed and breakfast. There are all types of restaurants featuring amazing sea food: fresh raw cherry red clams, oysters .50 a piece, 2 lobsters for 14 bux, calamari, italian restaurants, exclusive pubs to salem and boston with micro brewery. Surrounded by scenic walk bike paths. Historical bed and breakfast in wonderful Salem. Located near the old town, Northey Street House is my second home. It's not your typical weekend, you can walk around, learn about witches, shop, my favorite is having a nice seafood or Italian dining experience after a day of exploring. Town has a nice balance between locals and out of towners. I give it 5 stars because of its cleanness, newness, coziness, convenience, quietness, cable tv, space, and over all taste. Insider advice: book in advance for halloween and try out the Japanese Garden room (ideal for 2 people). read more

Fantastic Flora!!!! We had a group of 6 - 2 families. We were going to be squished in the vacation rental - cheaper than the individual rooms of the house, but Flora graciously upgraded us to each have our own room with our own private bathroom for each family. We got so lucky! She let us pay what we were initially going to pay with the vacation rental so we saved a lot of money for what we got! Flora keeps her home VERY clean!! I was so impressed. My mom is very clean in her own home and even SHE was impressed with this home. Our room came complete with all the works. It included a tv, microwave, mini refrigerator, ample amount of towels, toilet paper, etc. There was nothing extra we needed! We went upstairs to the kitchen for a bit and borrowed a few dvds while we were up there. Flora kindly talked to us about places to visit and such. She was so good to both our families. She wanted to make sure we had a good time during our visit. So accommodating. I can't describe how wonderful our stay was. It was literally indescribable. The Northey House was built in 1809! Ask Flora about it!! I can't wait to come back and visit Salem again because I will for sure visit Flora again and stay at her place!! If I could give this place MORE stars, I would. read more

As far as I'm concerned, this is the only place to stay in Salem. A five star experience through and through. Thank you Flora!! We stayed at Northey Street House for just one night and I really wish it could have been longer. Flora was so wonderful and accommodating. Our little apartment was just perfect! Breezy, very clean -- a very sweet little space. It overlooks the back patio; the perfect space for morning coffee or an afternoon glass of wine. Breakfast in the morning was exceptional! Fresh, homemade (warm!) blueberry rhubarb scones, eggs, sausage, coffee, fruit...all excellent, very fresh. Very good! We dined out on the deck, which was just lovely. The location is also great -- just a 5-8 minute walk to downtown Salem where all the shops and restos are. We will definitely stay again when we are in Salem. Thanks again Flora! Breakfast was on point! All seasonal and deliciously healthy. Flora was nice and the room was well cleaned prior to our stay. There were three of us there for a bachelorette weekend. Tips: plenty of towels, blankets, pillows, showers fully stock with shampoo/conditioner/soap. Wifi is free and parking. The balcony is a nice spot to relax and this spot is. 5-10 minute walk to everything downtown. There is a beverage and snack area for all visitors. Earth friendly as they have solar panels, composting in the basement, recycling, no shoes on carpets and so on. Great place for friends couples and families! I will definitely go again :) read more

Do not stay here. The owner charged my card $100 for her broken toilet when we left!!! It was plugged and there was no plunger when we left the room. She charged my card and told me my son put stuff in it and broke it. We drove back to the bed and breakfast as the plumber was there who stated nothing was in it but toilet paper. You shouldn't use your guests as an excuse to replace your old appliances!!! Do not trust her with your card information!!! read more

FANTASTIC!! My husband and I stayed here for a few days in the first week of November to celebrate our honeymoon. We had a terrific time. Flora is a fantastic and welcoming hostess. She provided us with great breakfast and great tips for tourism. We stayed in the Garden Room which was decorated with a Japanese style that made it very cozy and comfortable. This bed and breakfast is a short walk to the city and all of the attractions. We were able to see everything we wanted without being right in the middle of the city. We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit Salem and/or Boston. read more

My friend and I were excited about our night out in Salem. We had specifically booked a room with 2 beds on AirBNB as pictured, and as described. I received an email from the host, Flora, the DAY-OF our reservation telling us our room had been "upgraded" due to scheduling. Upon arrival, we noticed the "upgraded" room only had 1 bed. We spoke with Flora immediately, who told us the people she put in the room we originally booked "have a kid," which is not our concern or our problem. She was very unhelpful and asked us if we'd like to stay somewhere else, without offering so much as an apology or even a free breakfast. Having already done our due diligence, we knew our options were limited, and far more expensive, so we chose to stay. The next morning around 9am, Flora popped in (literally) and said, "Oh, I see you made it through the night." All of our interactions with her, this comment included, were bizarre and off-putting. At 10 minutes after 10 o'clock (checkout was at "10am", even though in the listing it said 11am), Flora came in again and asked "Are you almost ready? My housekeeper is here." I informed her my friend had left the room to take a call, and we would be leaving once she was off the phone. At this point I was pissed. How dare she mess up our reservation, then harass us about checking out?! Was this really the only room her housekeeper could clean?! Flora's customer "service" skills are lacking to say the least. She is socially awkward and just plain rude and has no business running a business. But wait...it gets worse. I politely request a partial refund, and write a review on AirBNB, and this is what she posts about me: "Holly stayed 1 Saturday night on a very high demand weekend. I had upgraded them to the beautiful Garden room on the 1st floor with a queen and private bath where they can park their car right next to their room and the room opens out to a beautiful garden. They were not happy I found out as they wanted 2 separate beds. They never specified they needed 2 beds. The historical room has a slim ottoman convertible with only a foam padding suitable for a petite person or child. So even if they did get that room, the twin would not be too comfortable as they were both on the plus size. I didn't want anyone staying if they are not happy, so I gave them the option to cancel without penalty. They could of gone anywhere else, but they choose to stay. I was very tempted to cancel on my end, but felt bad for them as it was a high demand weekend. They had a sour face the whole time. We clearly state our check-out time as being 10:00AM. However, when I checked at 10, she seemed astonished. They clearly did not read any of the house manual or guides before booking. My housekeeper who arrived at 10 had to wait until they finally left at about 10:30. So that's extra time I had to pay her. Parking is not included with our rooms as half of the guests take public transportation. Parking is only $5/day which is quite a deal in Salem. They left without paying their parking fee which they had agreed to." To which I replied: 1. The "upgraded" room (from 2 beds to 1 bed) included parking - in fact, that was the only upgrade! Don't you read your own documents?! I would be more than happy to send them to you. 2.The listing WE BOOKED specified 2 beds; did you expect us to tell you we needed pillows & blankets, too?! 3.We are not plus-size, but even if we were, I will let your disgusting body-shaming comment speak for itself. That should bring in plenty of business. 4.You aggressively told us we could "go somewhere else" (everywhere else was booked, as it was last-minute on a HOLIDAY WEEKEND), but you never offered the option to "cancel without penalty." 5.The "sour faces" we had were in direct response to your unique brand of "customer service." 6.The discrepancies in your checkout time of 10am vs 11am were misleading and confusing. I can send these documents to you as well. Or post them. Your call. 7.My friend saw the housekeeper cleaning another room. Just stop. 8. See #1. Parking was included with the "upgrade." We NEVER agreed to pay it. ***Not once from the time we approached you about the lack of 2 beds in the room to now have you taken ANY responsibility for your mistake or apologized. Not even ONCE. You were rude from the minute we arrived, and continue to be so - you are a terrible "host" and, apparently, an even worse human being. Shame on you.*** Run, don't walk away from this place and unstable host. RUN! read more

I'd also like to add that she made amazing breakfast so make sure you're up early to try it out.. The house was cozy and the porch was relaxing to have a nice glass of wine.. This is a very clean place, which really was my number one concern. Close enough to sites, breakfasts are a bit boring though for a B&B. Staff was friendly enough but kind of cool and mostly left you alone. All in all, it didn't feel like a "cozy" B&B-- Kind of felt like you were crashing at a friend's house ...who wasn't your friend. read more

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Northey Street House for Halloween last year (2015) and we had a wonderful experience. Flora was helpful throughout the process- from booking the room to check-out. Prior to arrival Flora provided plenty of information on things to do in the area, which was helpful in planning what to do outside of Halloween activities. During our stay at Northey Street House Flora cooked amazing and fresh breakfasts. Flora has a deep knowledge of Salem and the surrounding area. Being able to pick her brain for recommendations helped us get more out of our stay. As a direct result of some of the recommendations we were able to experience some of the best food Salem had to offer and were even kept aware of some Halloween related events that were must do. The Northey Street House is a short walk to the Salem Commons. We were able to get to and see all of the town on foot. We highly recommend the Northey Street House. You can book confidently! Having stayed at many b&bs, I was pleasantly surprised to find one that exceeded all my expectations. Flora's desire to make guests feel they are priority #1, her healthy/delicious breakfasts and the comfortable/clean room enhanced my stay. She has brochures and recommendations for all the museums, whale watches and restaurants in the area. Everything in Salem is walking distance and it's an easy commute to Boston & Cambridge. We just started a road trip with no plans, found this B&B online. Our intentions were to stay from location to location on our road trip, but we loved this house so much, we stayed the whole time. We had a 2 room suite with a full kitchen and bath, beautifully and thoughtful decorated. Better than home. For a very small fee, breakfast was included and it was home cooked and fabulous. We got to meet some other travelers, so that was fun as well. It was spotless and Thora was very helpful and considerate. We walked to a coffee shop in the morning right around the corner, great bakery items, and the town was just a 10 minute walk as well.. Definitely a must stay!! read more

I was blown away by my stay at Northey Street House Bed and Breakfast. Aside from the very convenient location which provided very easy walking access to many of the highlights in Salem, the atmosphere and charm of the room itself was absolutely stellar. It is hard to balance a historic New England feel while providing modern comfort and Northey Street delivered! Ms. Flora, the owner and-8 operator is second to none in my Bed and Breakfast experience. She is kind, knowledgeable, accessible, and all around a great person to interact with, providing a very welcoming and comfortable environment making you feel right at home. Ms. Flora provided absolutely excellent service, was always prepared, offered any dietary adjustment needs for breakfast, and was a real joy to have a conversation with! I know my experience traveling to Salem wouldn't have been half as pleasant if I had not stayed at Northey Street House Bed and Breakfast, and when my travels lead me to Salem again, I know this is the only place I will ever be staying in Salem! read more

If I could give this place ZERO stars, I would! My friend and I booked a two bed room at this residence and the day of arrival were told we were "upgraded." When we were told "upgraded" we assumed all the basics we originally booked would remain the same except in some way, this would be upgraded. Shame on us for assuming this! When we arrived there was one bed in the rental. We immediately reached out and she came down to talk to us (aggressively so, I might add.) She continued to tell us that she had no clue we needed two beds and, in my opinion, wanted us to put up and shut up by adding a little guilt that a family needed the other room - unprofessional on so many levels. We BOOKED a two bedroom rental, that's how one knows what we needed. The conversation was not only incredibly aggressive and uncomfortable but just downright unproductive - this woman's business sense is lacking to say the least. We had no where else to go and felt completely trapped. If we had known this in advance, we could have found somewhere else to stay. We went out, enjoyed our night and came back quietly. We were excellent guests regardless of this interaction and complete lack of proper business ownership: we respected the property, watched noise level and were polite. The next morning, at roughly 9am, she came barging into the room and made a crude joke about us "surviving the night." Not funny, lady. Check out is at 10am. I was outside on a phone call after having packed my bags and saw her cleaners arrive and go into another unit. I also noticed her giving me the stink eye so I ended my call to help my friend load the car. I wanted to get out and get home as soon as possible! Come to find out, a few minutes past 10 she was back in the room rushing us out. If this were any other scenario, I'd let it slide but given the whole experience I found it aggressive. Why was she rushing us so fast when her cleaners were in another unit?! It was only a couple of minutes, relax. We then wrote her a letter regarding this stay. A very nice message to a very unpleasant stay. Her response? Even worse than the stay itself. Not only did she continue to repeat herself, she then referred to both my friend and I as being PLUS SIZE. What the??? Are you SERIOUS?! Screenshot of the message is posted. By the way, Flora: I'm a size 6 pants and a small on top. I didn't realize my size had anything to do with renting a room?! You are so rude it's not even funny. Ok, I am a procrastinator. It was 48 hours before my wedding and I had nowhere to stay. I read some reviews and called Northey St BnB late at night. Due to work issues I was not able to leave the north east for a traditional honeymoon this week. Got a room, no problems. Rates were very reasonable. I had some conflicts that would result in my inability to check in during regular check in times. The owner had no problem changing her schedule for me. That is awesome customer service. I got there on Friday afternoon and was welcomed at the driveway. I got the Garden Room. got squared away quickly. Checked the room out. It was very nice. Very updated compared with other BnBs I have stayed in. had wireless internet access, hdtv etc... Room was vey clean. owner was very personable. Walking distance from downtown Salem, but just far enough out that the loud weekend crowd wont disturb your sleep. I had breakfast twice in my 4 days. ( I am not a big morning eater) food was great, the people were better. The best mornings (for me, as I stated, not a big breakfast fan) were spent drinking coffee in the garden. Check this place out if you are in Salem, and try the Garden room if available. read more

Stayed April 8 2017 with my sister and her two teenage sons. On the phone Flora tells me we are in 2 bedroom apartment; so no breakfast will be offered only granola bars and coffee/tea in the room. We get to Northey Street House at noon, Flora opens up the door sticks her head out and says your key is in the lockbox hanging on the back of the gate, She barely yells the combo to the lockbox before shutting the door. Zero hospitality....My first experience at a B & B..not what was expected. Beside the fact that it was not a two bedroom, the twin beds were in what would be an extension of the kitchen, and there were no granola bars or pods for the coffee maker. There were some old tea bags. My nephews wanted to put drinks in the fridge but it was not plugged in. She is really kooky and odd...almost scary in the dismissive way she treated guest who paid $198 for the night read more

We loved it here. Very homey atmosphere with homey breakfast...additional items made to order if asked liked eggs, toast, etc. snacks and drinks available 24/7, lots of local information. Hostess was very helpful and friendly...available but respected our privacy! Nice and clean! Great location! read more

Everything was clean and in pristine condition, we had every comfort possible and we were withing walking distance or easy driving difference of everything in Salem. My wife and I stayed at the Northey in early October (2009) and enjoyed it very much. Our rooms (we stayed in two over four nights) were spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The breakfasts were delicious and substantial. The location is very convenient. Best of all is the hostess, Flora, with her beagle, Charlie, in a supporting role. Flora is charming, very helpful, and a wonderful cook. In addition, the prices are very reasonable. I couldn't recommend the Northey more - a wonderful choice. read more

In the midst of a month road trip, we stumbled on this inn...the innkeeper was gracious, our room was private and personally decorated and the breakfast was throughly delicious...the location was perfect for our transit to Boston and walking tours of Salem...Charlie the Beagle was an unexpected bonus!
