Every two weeks-Monday evening, I visit North Gate Barbershop in Commack and leave ennobled by their service. Through the artistry of Lana and Eddie, my experience as a customer feels closer to that of a patron. Just as experimentation and reflection are bridged by discipline, their service shapes my understanding of character. In Lana's care, there is a depth to every interaction that comprises an inquiry and discovery of music, books, travel, and culture. Her cutting is always on point, matched by her warm presence. I recall the first time waiting and observing her work. The variety of styles-the low taper fade with a modern pompadour, the modern side part taper, and the executive contour style-all showed a mark of variability that suited her patrons in both professional and casual settings. When I wanted to keep the hair long in the front, she recommended a scissor-cut slick back with a low taper using a 1.5 guard. She took the time to break down the different hairstyles and tailored the cut exactly to my preference. Where Lana grounds her artistry with warm, meticulous guidance, Eddie's quality complements her with an enamor for history, current events, and art. Eddie helped me understand how different styles work when dimensions are proportioned well. He educated me on the basic anatomy of a haircut, which made me appreciate the uniqueness of a style-balancing the varying dimensions of the front, the top, the temple, and the parietal ridge. I have been getting my hair cut at this barber shop for 15 years and it's always been a pleasure walking through there doors .The owner Aurthor who is a complete gentleman has always given me a fantastic haircut,I highly recommend this shop to all my friends and they have never been disappointed. Barber Shop. I began trying this place a few months back as my usual barber is a bit of a ride for me. This place is perpetually busy which is a good sign, so I popped in and decided to give it a shot. There are normally about 8 people working there so the wait is not that bad as the line moves. I have tried two of the guys there and they both turned me out with a decent look - they listen to what I want and it worked out nicely. Prices have gone up and service got terrible. I took my 10 year old to another local barber, place was cleaner, they were nicer and more affordable for my sons cut. I don't go here anymore. Northgate barber needs a deep clean and not raise prices for the same old drab service. read more

I have been going here for my haircuts for years I use Arthur the owner and I have never had a bad cut. Usually they are excellent. The shop is clean and he has 4 to 6 Barbers on call. Place is usually crowded, which is a good sign , but waits are short due to number of barbers. In my years I have never witnessed anyone complaining . Downside is they don't take appointments so if you want a particular barber you might have to wait. Prices are reasonable. My husband has been a client here for at least 15 years and has only used Arthur. He travels to Commack from Ronkonkoma and would never switch to any other barber even out of convenience. The few times I have gone with my husband the place is clean, the people are friendly and always attentive to the needs of the client. I've seen many clients come and go and all are completely satisfied and happy. read more

Nornally, these guys do a great job of cutting my hair but today, I got a terrkble haircut. The guy didn't even know what he was doing. What a waste of 20 bucks (including tip). I could've done it myself and achieved a better result. I have been going there for a few years now but I don't think I will be returning there anymore, I don't want to risk getting that guy again. I do life skills coaching for an agency and my title is called a home programmer. I work with a 7 year old autistic boy and today me, him, and his mom went to go get his haircut. Mom told me it is VERY rough to get him there so she asked if I could come along. We pull in the parking lot and the boy immediately froze and did not want to get out of the car. After a few minutes he walked out but then dropped to the floor. A barber there names Peter, came outside to help us. He was patient and kind. Eventually, we were all able to get the boy inside. He did sit in the waiting area but was afraid to go to the barbers station. It took about 15 minutes of him crying and trying to leave before Peter was able to build a slight rapport with him and get him to the chair. I am unaware of the owners name except I do know he was EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE. I was asking Peter if he had the ability to cut the boys hair in the waiting area to reduce the scariness the boy had of being in a barbershop. The owner had THE NERVE to say "What's the big deal just bring him over to the chair" and "I'm not rearranging furniture for him." I said he has AUTISM AND THIS IS BRAND NEW TO HIM!" It's an unfamiliar setting and he is scared. The own then said well my wife is a special ed teacher I know how these things work. I responded, no you don't you are not the teacher your wife is. The owner had nothing to say. I was extremely offended by his comments and I suggest NOBODY give him the time of day. Peter however, was the nicest man and he deserves all the credit. If it wasn't for him, I would give this place ZERO stars. Five stars for Peter, none for this man's business. read more

Been coming to Northgate barbershop for years now. Arthur is extremely meticulous and takes care to give the best haircut possible. Brought my 16 year old here for a TRIM. Specifically said just a little off the back and cut the bangs. He made the first cut so short! And when my kid said 'i told you just a little bit from the back' he said 'oops.' And he kept cutting off more. My kid is furious and the barber was completely nonchalant about it. Never, ever, ever letting anyone in my family or friends go back there! I don't write bad stuff about places but I cannot be more angry than I am right now! read more

Been going here for many years. Primarily I use Arthur when I go, but when he isn't there any of the guys there do a fantastic job. The place is always clean, the staff always top notch and can always get a spot in the parking lot. I have been taking my 14 year old son there since he was 5 years old. I recently moved 25 miles further east and still travel back to get mine and my sons haircut here because it's always on point! 5 stars all around! read more
