some of the negative reviews had me hesitant, but with my daughters family visiting (2 grandkids - 3 + 6), thought it was worth the chance -- especially as it was raining... Bought tickets - 3 adults , 2 kids @ $125 which I thought was pricey, and was told to 'use the facilities now (at the entrance) as there are none along the tour -- WHICH IS A MILE LONG..." Not sure it's a mile long but it is HUGE and VERY impressive and all of us totally enjoyed the experience with the kids wanting to do it again the next day. If you're into train models this is going to blow your mind. They have their full models set up through time and there is so much to look at. So many small details in each section you could easily spend a couple of hours just looking at the train models. If you are going with kids, make sure you try to keep up with them. There are many rooms of things to see and do. The massive train 'system' wraps around the entire building with many viewing points. My daughter loved walking around and looking at everything. Only bad thing is there are so many things to see and a child can only take in so much at one time. I didn't get to see everything I wanted to see. But, I now have a great excuse to go back myself. There are interactive buttons to push along the way, but they were not working on my visit. We visited on a Friday around 2:30pm and the place was quiet. There was plenty of parking and no lines for entry tickets. The tickets were $20.00 per adult. There were a few guests but no one was in our way. They also have an outdoor train that looks fun, bit we were unable to do for because of the weather. My biggest complaint is that there are some areas that are a bit run down. It is also a bit pricey at $20 per adult. Also be sure to have the kids use the bathroom before you enter because once you enter the exhibit there are no bathrooms till you are done. read more

Northlandz is a place that truly gives you fits when it comes time to do a review for it. On one hand you have a true marvel of imagination that has to been seen to be believed. But on the other hand you have a place that's stuck in time with an owner who is either oblivious or doesn't care about how the place is crumbling all around him. Let me explain even though a lot of what I'm going to say was covered perfectly by Jake E. last year. Even if you're not a fan of railway modeling this place will no doubt make your jaw drop when you see the sheer scope and size of what's been built especially if you've been to the Choo Choo Barn in Strasburg or Roadside America in Shartelsville for context. Northlandz is like those two places put together multiplied by (thinking of hyperbolic number to make my point.......) a hundred. If you actually try to see every part of the displays here you would be hard pressed to do it in under two to two and a half hours. But on the flip side considering how many trains you will see very few of them are actually running and in a recurring theme here, displays flaws that are present have been that way for years so you know that no one is fixing/looking at what's actually going on here in detail. Also to further expound on that note of poor upkeep: the carpets are ripping in numerous spots the displays are dusty beyond belief lights are burnt out in several areas that people have been talking about in online reviews for years the "interactive" area towards the end where you can push a few buttons to make some trains move is mostly broken coming around a corner and getting speared by a broken handrail the men's room is well......to say filthy would be insulting to filth so use your imagination What this equals out to is a place that is very unique and awesome in certain ways but in others especially considering the high admission price is sad because clearly the owner either no longer cares or he no longer has the ability fix what needs fixing. What this place looked like fifteen years ago and what it's slowly becoming is sad considering the amount of effort put into the displays. Bruce is truly a one of a kind cat but dude: Either fix the place up yourself, sell Northlandz to someone who can or just close it so that people can remember more what it looked like fully functional versus what it's becoming. read more

Whoever designed and built this exhibit is to be congratulated. The attention to detail is incredible. Unfortunately people have made their mark in a number of places. A great time for children and adults. Try to take your time while walking through the building (not an easy thing with a 4 year old!). Well worth the cost of the visit. Make sure to take the short train ride ouitside, before going into the exhibit. I had to change my rating to 4 Star for a couple of reasons. While the display is incredible and the detail work great I think that they are running on a shoestring and not able to keep up with necessary maintenance. I saw many areas where the railings were broken or loose, plexiglass panels broken, leaving a jagged edge and at least on panel that was actual glass. The stepladder left standing in the walkway is an invitation to a curious child. Both restrooms were very dirty. The overall building ( 8 miles of track ) is a marvel and the ramps kept taking you up, up and up while you can look down on the towns, villages and industrial areas from all angles. Unfortunately some areas were not functioning or hardly functioning. The building was constructed specifically for this purpose and, after 5 or 6 years of preparation, opened about 18 years ago. The display is the result of the imagination of one man and it looks like a labor of love. There was someone playing an organ when we entered (probably the owner/designer) and there is a small auditorium with numerous organs and pianos. I can only hope that some outside entity buys this exhibit and puts some money into cleaning it up and putting it back in working order. It could be a great draw. read more

Don't miss this fabulous attraction - it is really unbelievable the amount of work and also the continuous vistas that Northlandz provides. So many fine details - so many stories. I went with my family, all adults, and we were fascinated. I had been to Northlandz a decade ago and forgot how big and amazing it really is. And you thought you were a pack rat? This place shows you no matter how much stuff you collected over the years it is a spit in the bucket compared what has been collected and put on display at Nothlandz. If you saw a video or photo of this place it doesn't do it justice. The amazing journey it took from Bruce's basement, then expanding it 5x, and then to this location along with an exterior train you can actually ride if you love model railroads and miniatures this is a must visit. Northlandz, yes that is a 'z' at the end of the word, is at the northern part of Flemington, NJ on the southbound side of Rt. 202 so you're pointed in the correct direction if you want to do some shopping afterwards. Certainly a good compromise for those who drag along their partners who really are not quite that into model RR but love shopping. This building is vast. It took: 2 years in planning, 2 years to build the building (but if you note in the middle is an unused auditorium with fixed seats so it may have been a converted building), and 4.5 years to build out the inside along with tracks and dioramas. That must have been one heck of an entrepreneurial run he had because it means he had to take off at least 6 years before he was able to generate income to pay for the investment. At $13.75 adult/$9.75 child rates that means it would be a very long time before he would see everything paid back. There is also a old-fashioned looking train ride outside with caboose you can ride for $2.50 each. It's a bit noisy and you can hear the cheap metal creaking as it chugs along, but you feel sorry for the owners so the $2.50 is more as a polite donation to help him keep their dream alive. This ride is really not something any adult would rave about, although for the kids they may love it. So, anyone without kids in drag you may want to pass. Bruce operates Northlandz full time with him at the admissions counter and gift shop, and his wife Jean at the snack bar. Now before you get too revved up just be warned that the landscape dioramas show a bit of wear as well as signs of vandalism and dust. Some lights need to be replaced, some walls painted, there are even trains or areas of displays not in operation due to what I believe as either a lack of manpower, finances, or loss of interest in upkeep. Don't expect it to be perfect - it's not. But I will add if you don't expect much you will have your socks blown off. This place with 8 miles of tracks just baffles the mind as you pass from one diorama area to another. It does also have four authentic pipe organs on displace, lots of dolls (some in themed settings), and a good-sized doll house with semi miniatures. The trains include mid-sized and large model trains although the big ones are not functional. This facility is laid out like a Stew Lenard's, taking you from one theme to the next as you work your way up high and then descend. This is wheelchair and kid-friendly. But if you hate screaming running kids you'll need to work around the hour's kids may show up there with families. We went on a Saturday, in the cold of February and it was pretty good - not crowded, very light. But our experience was even one noisy kid echoes throughout half the facility, and one parent trying to control three running around, makes it a bit challenging to enjoy unless you're just letting your kids loose so you can get some sleep later in the evening. I have nothing against kids, I was one myself. But when you get to a certain age your ears just can't take too much screaming and yelling as it did when you were younger. Next time I'll bring ear plugs or my noise cancelling headphones! Actually, it's not that bad unless one screamer just happens to show up wherever you are. The entrance comes up quickly before the traffic light, so if you miss the entrance southbound on Rt 202 make a right at the traffic light and there is a hidden driveway on right that goes into same parking lot from rear. There is ample free parking. Everything is ADA compliant. There is a snack bar on premise and you're welcome to bring food and drink into most of the facility (not all, you'll have to dump your stuff after you get to other upper side of the auditorium. There is a trash pail and sign there). Once you get walking there is nowhere to sit and rest (except one folding chair we saw facing the parking lot on the upper level). The journey is self guided and most likely will take between 1-2 hours if you don't run through it. As Bruce says take your time because the trains don't always come out through tunnels quickly, you just have to stand and wait, taking in the impressive diorama and landscaping. It is amazing what he was able to build there in the 4+ years it too him, building the ramps and rooms, pouring the plaster, laying the trestle, and putting the finishing touches on the towns. When you see the scope and size of what is there you understand why it has gone into disarray and feel sorry about its potential read more

I appreciated the artistry of each room and the many tunnels, hills, canyons and scenes that were carefully built. We went the day after a snow storm, so there weren't crowds which was nice. Don't be discouraged after the first exhibition hall - continue to walk when you get to the main hall and you will get to the world of wonder! The exhibition is vast and an interesting depiction of the industrial American railroad. The design is intricate - you will get to experience the same scenery from multiple angles (often on a separated floors as well). Be ware that there are some older display that included languages that need to be updated (I,e, the usage of hobo) but overall it's interesting. The other thing is I wish there are more trains around because they are hard to catch! read more

Great displays. My son loved it. Place could use a bit of a facelift though. Overall it was a great. Updated 8/2019 - visited again with the kids and as always they loved it! It's nice to see that the place is getting some much needed renovations. They recently redid the front of the site and added a great new gift shop. Walls look recently painted and carpets are all being replaced. Better lighting is still needed to make all the areas more visible. They also added a few trains the kids could control which was a huge hit with my boys. Some of the displays were closed for renovations but they added a little play area for the kids with lots of activities. Kids enjoyed this part. Outdoor train wasn't working but it didn't take away from a great visit. read more

Took my son here today and it was a great time! It is much bigger than I expected and the details are great. Lots of fun & unique scenes to lookout for. There is a play place in the middle that distracted my 3 yr old for a bit, but we got moving again. I do wish there was another bathroom...it is only accessible from the lobby....would have been helpful especially with a potty training toddler. But we all had a great time and will look forward to coming back again when he is older to experience again. read more
