I formerly saw Dr. Hicks, and have transferred to Dr. Rockwell due to Hicks' departure. The doctors are alright. I didn't love Hicks. Rockwell is decent but I feel he's more efficient at managing time than truly understanding, to be completely honest. That said, they're the only reason I give this practice ANY stars. First, they have a ridiculous late policy. $50 fee if you're more than 5 minutes late. When your office is in downtown Phoenix and you have patients coming from the East valley, how can you charge for being FIVE minutes late, especially with appointments booked during rush hour?! I haven't been to the physical Mesa location yet, but the front office is the same for all locations. Fees for literally everything. Out of medications and need a prescription? That'll be $30. Need an appointment? How about 2 months from now. Even though I was supposed to be back sometime around next week and WOULD have received a new prescription at that appointment, since they don't have any openings for literally two months I have to pay a fee. You have to CALL to do everything with this office. No online patient portal. The doctors won't make a follow-up appointment with you during your session. You can't request appointments, prescriptions, or make payments online. You have to call for everything. And good luck getting anyone on the phone. Even worse is trying to actually get a prescription sent to a pharmacy! I used to have a mail-order pharmacy that only took faxes (for real, I hate them, too) and it would take months to get prescriptions sent in. My new (equally inept) mail order pharmacy called for a new prescription, prompting Northlight to actually call ME to extort the $30 fee and I asked them to send the Rx to my local pharmacy since I'm already out of meds and need them NOW not next week maybe. They were more than happy to take my money, but actually call the pharmacy and send the Rx over? Nah. Not their job. I truly hate this place. I hate dealing with them and their reliance on phone calls and fees for every little thing. How do you not have a patient portal in 2021?! You deal with people with mental issues, phone calls only increase anxiety in a lot of us! And customer service is nonexistant! How do you let patients run out of medication because of ineptitude?! This isn't like running out of Tylenol, I literally need my medication to function in life and every day without it means 3x longer to work back up to normal. Unfortunately because of the pandemic, every other psychiatrist in town is booked up or doesn't take insurance, so I'm stuck with them until I can find an opening somewhere else. New to Medicare so I call about everything before I commit. Aetna said I'm covered. Northlight Counseling Associates said they take Aetna insurance. Went for an intake. Received a bill for $500+. Aetna said they cover Northlight but not person I saw. I said you cover Northlight Associates and I met with an associate. They said I should have asked them if they cover that associate for the intake. However you don't know who is doing your intake before the intake itself! Aetna said I should file an appeal. How much time should I expend on this? Finally Northlight said ignore the bill, after spending a whole day on it already! Also still talking about this now here. Aetna phone experts have given me too much misinformation. Can't change insurance carrier until open enrollment this fall. read more

Was not a pleasant experience, their communication is poorly done with their patients. I attempted to schedule again with Northlight after not receiving a virtual call for my session last month, which left me reconsidering to book another appointment. I wanted to see if they'd do an in person appointment but when I called to do so I was told I can't schedule with them anymore because I "missed two sessions." The first session I didn't receive contact and the second session I had to cancel. Apparently the two sessions were both considered "missed" so I couldn't schedule with them again. The receptionist then said to leave a voicemail with another department they had instead of resolving the issue herself. Wouldn't recommend if that's how they treat new patients. If that's how a new patient is treated I would expect more issues with them in the future. read more

I missed my 1st counseling appointment. Didn't know it. Wanted $60 for missed appointment. Ummm I'm on disability and don't have $60. I'm already struggling and they are making it worse. Horrible counseling. Haven't been a patient for over 4 years because the care was so abysmal and yet I continue to receive the same bill in the mail for a chunk of change that I do not believe that I owe, and yet nobody is ever available in their billing department to provide clarity or even assist with payment. I have been calling for months, always prompted to leave a message with my name and phone number and still never receive a call back. I saw Dr. Rockwell who was dismissive at best and then Dr. Hart who spent most of our sessions talking about HERSELF. I enjoyed Randy Vogelsang. HOWEVER, then we received a bill stating we owed $180 in last minute cancellation fees. This was a huge surprise to us as we have only cancelled 'one time' within their 24 grace period. When I called to cancel a distracted young male took the call. When we received the outlandish bill, I called the office to explain that I had called their office to cancel an appointment, with less than 24 hour notice, but in no way have we cancelled $180 worth of appointments. Samantha and Kristi said they'd talk with Randy and get back to me. No call ever came. I continued to follow up only to find out they were leaving these fees in place, and requested we pay it. I would never go to an office in which I felt I could not trust they had our beat interest at heart. I did cancel ONE appointment that I should pay a fee, however, the rest are bogus! I have been seeing Dr. Rockwell for 8 years - he is far and beyond the best psychiatrist I've ever seen. I have recommended him to everybody I know that needs a psychiatrist. But the office staff at Northlight are so horrible that I get panic attacks just from the idea of having to call them. The medication assistant has literally never picked up the phone in the 8 years that I have been a patient. She sends my meds to the wrong pharmacy frequently. I call to refill my stimulant medications a week in advance (because they can't refill controlled substances any sooner than that) and I often don't get it until I've been out for several days because she doesn't do her job. I'm embarrassed that I've ever recommended Northlight Counseling to anybody because of how awful the office staff is. It is clear they do not deal with any sort of mental health issues because of how callus and mean they are to the patients. They have literally mocked patients within earshot of other people. They are shameful and the entire staff needs to be overhauled. I have never had a single good experience with them. I am literally crying right now because of the idea of changing to a new psychiatrist, but I haven't had my medication in 2 weeks because of how useless the MA is. read more

Run from this place as if it were the plague! I went here for a couple of years (seeing Dr. Hicks, he was great by the way), and what I experienced on the management, administrative, and customer service end of the business was insufferable negligence and disregard for patients. Employee turnover is high, Northlight's upper management does nothing to address and/or to actually remedy their problems, and they (Northlight) habitually under pay their staff (to increase profit margins), that only the poorest qualified people are hired or the truly qualified people move on to better jobs because the pay and working conditions are so pitiful. If you're looking for extreme dysfunction within an organization, then by all means, make an appointment today, you won't be disappointed! BTW, if per chance (and it's a long shot), any of Northlight's upper management, or perhaps even the owner, reads this review, I'd recommend a visit to one of the psychiatrist working in your organization. Why, it is obvious to all (think "The Emperor's New Clothes") that you display all the attributes of having a mental condition characterized by significantly impaired intellectual and adaptive functioning. It's also know as "mental retardation" or MR in shorthand. Yes, it's an actual neurodevelopmental disorder, and you guys are showing all the signs and behaviors that correspond to that diagnosis. read more

I was referred to NLC by two separate counselors who were unable to accommodate my son's insurance. I waited on hold for over 20 minutes on Friday when I finally got a male on the phone, I explained I was looking for a counselor for my 11 year old son. He asked what part of the valley and then told me there are no counselors available. I then asked what areas did have a counselor available for an 11 year old to which he replied none of their counselors in the entire Phoenix Metro area will see an 11 year old..... I continue my provider search to be referred to NLC again. I let this counselor know I was told they don't take anyone under 12. He assures me this is incorrect information and urges me to look at their website and call again. Monday morning I see their site advertises they take all ages and even promotes play therapy which is obviously geared towards children. I call again making mention of my Friday experience and what their website promotes and am told they have many providers and that only "some" see children. One person is recommended to see a child at 10 am on a school day in over two months. That won't exactly work. Why this company promotes itself as an all availability all accepting counseling center is beyond me. I am beyond frustrated. read more

I think it is absolutely absurd that this office will not see me when I desperately need help, because I was in Aurora behavioral health for a severe mental breakdown and could not call them to cancel my first therapy and psychiatrist appointment. Seems like they only care about money and not really helping someone who needs it. I was involuntarily commented. Now that I am properly medicated and need medication management, they say....too bad you lost it when you did, but we REFUSE to help. I have also contacted my psychologist to let them know of my experience. They may just stop referring patients to them! Honor health has many more and much better places to refer us to read more

Dr. Rockwell is an excellent psychiatrist. He listened to my input about the treatment plan he came up with for me and really cares about my well being. His office staff are friendly and welcoming. Like so many others have stated, this is not an organization I would recommend. I saw Dr. Hicks at the Phoenix office for a number of years and really liked him. The office policies, on the other hand, had me running for the hills. You do, literally, get charged for everything. It is absolutely inappropriate for any doctor's office to charge me to call in a refill for my prescriptions when they can't get me in timely. Every appointment I had began late, but as one reviewer noted, they charge you if you're a few minutes late. I sat for 30-45 minutes multiple times during my lunch hour waiting for my appointment and no one offered me a discount. (LOL) All that said, I would do more research now than I did then and select a provider that not only had quality doctors but had reasonable policies and used modern technology to manage their business. read more

I'm highly disappointed with there inability for me to speak with someone immediately to resolve my issues. The providers are great from my experience. I've been going here for years. However the management is a little money hungry if you ask me. If you by chance cannot make or have to reschedule an appointment outside of the timeframe the provider wants to see you back you will be required to pay a $30.00 fee inorder to get a refill of any prescription. I haven't had an appointment with any of the providers here. I didn't make it past the front office staff before I realized that, even if they deemed me worthy of their help and time, I'd not be using their services. I previously had an appointment with them a year or so ago, and decided to go with another provider, and was fairly certain I had cancelled my appointment. When I called about 5 minutes ago to make an appointment, the response I received was very cold. I was informed that I had not cancelled my appointment, and that I needed to contact my insurance company for some vague reason. It was made very clear to me that I was not welcome to book an appointment with ANY of their clinicians. EVER. I can understand giving me a hard time, or even making me pay a fee. But to also make me feel like I was a criminal and categorically refuse me service was unkind. Honestly, I'm sure they're doing fine as a business and have plenty of satisfied customers. But I will not be among them. It's clear to me that either the person who took my call is a miserable human, or that the policies of this office are such that they care more about being paid and being punitive than they do about helping people. What if I had been a suicidal caller? They have no idea what kind of problems I might have. They didn't care. I would like to thank Dr. Rockwell and his front and internal staff. They will go out of the way for you if it is a legit emergency. Dr Rockwell is kind, always on time, great sense of sarcastic humor as well as being a great Doctor . I have been seeing Dr Rockwell nearly 8 years. He takes his time allocated, has called the pharmacy on his vacation time to refill appointments. He is knowledgeable on drug interactions and he always seems to have a plan 2 or 3 in the back of his mind. With so many specialists not taking insurance anymore, I am grateful for the Dr. and all his staff. I have never encountered a rude front end individual, nor have I encountered a rude billing, or appointment scheduler. Thank you. read more

My children see Cathyann Hersom, LPC and I am beyond thrilled with our results after only 2 visits. My children ASK when they get to come see her again! We originally started seeing her because the teachers were expressing concern with ADD for one child and overall academic concerns with our other child but within those two visits we learned a lot as parents and how we can help our children with their behaviors, academic success and individually what each child needs. This was originally a short term tactic to determine if our children had add/adhd and next steps, however given the feedback and change in our children and how we parent, we will definitely continue to see her. read more

I was very nervous about going to my appoinment- I'm new to therapy. I had an evening appointment and the front office was closed when I got there, so I started filling out my new patient paperwork just as a sign had instructed. There was a bell to ring for service but no one came when I rang it (three times over 40 minutes). As people (I assume they were other therapists) came out of offices, no one acknowledged me or returned my smile. I finally got someone to take my paperwork and continued to wait. I got into my appointment about 15 minutes late. That happens and I don't fault anyone for that, but my appointment was also cut short. My therapist was disinterested in the entire shortened session. I was dressed pretty nicely but had exposed tattoos that seemed to bother her. She stared and seemed distracted, making me feel the need to explain to her that I was a good person more than once. Mind you, I was there for self esteem and anxiety issues, so feeling judged by an apathetic therapist was pretty unsettling. She didn't smile, she wasn't warm, and she wasn't encouraging. After I left, I jokingly told someone that the therapy session helped in its own way because the woman I saw was so curt and unpleasant that it made me feel like a better person. read more

Expensive and not willing to work with clients. I was a new client and had trouble on my paperwork (first time seeking counseling so it was all very confusing). The days in-between making the appointment and my appointment, I had to go out of town unexpectedly for a personal issue and did not have my computer or health insurance info on me. I tried the day of the appointment to get the paperwork done or reschedule but they said I was "too late" and charged me a $60 cancellation fee. In making the appointment originally, they never warned me that if I cancel/reschedule that there would be this fee. I tried reaching out to the counselor and she didn't care. This counseling office is not helpful at all and very rude on the phone. Would NOT recommend. read more

This review is about the front office, and no reflection on Dr. Hicks. The young lady at the front desk should not be allowed to work directly with the public. I have found her to be rude in the past, but on my last visit she argued with me about my copay, then said she called my insurance and verified it. I called my insurance the minute I walked out of the office. They verified that I was right about my copay, and verified that they were never called by the practice. I called NLC billing office, and again was met with a disagreement about copay. I finally insisted that they call my insurance company # on back of card. I assured them that I would be calling to verify that they called. Later, I received a msg from NLC, informing me that my copay is what I said it was, and I would now have a credit. Did I receive a single apology? NO If I hadn't been seeing Dr Hicks for so long, I would change practices in a heartbeat. I do not appreciate being lied to, argued with, and almost cheated out of money. read more

This review is mainly for the office staff. Dr. Hicks is AMAZING and the best, most thorough doc I've had, including PCPs. It's unfortunate that his office staff is not nearly up to his caliber of professionalism or level of care. The problems started when my first appointment was cancelled without my notice. I showed up anyway and was told to reschedule. I got in and saw Dr. Hicks and all was well. The second appointment was fine, but I have yet to have a third. On my second appointment we did a med change that required paying out of pocket. The med lady told me I had to shop around for the best price as Dr. Hicks wouldn't call it in to insurance. To this day I wonder if that was actually Dr. Hicks' word or just her not wanting to do her job. It took WEEKS to figure it out. In that time I experienced SERIOUS medication withdrawal because I was out of meds, even after consistent calling. I finally got a call back and I was shaking, in tears. I got yelled at that I was supposed to have already been on my new medication and she didn't understand why the old one wasn't already finished. It was never finished because she NEVER called it in to the pharmacy that I told them to. It took my husband calling and going back and forth to 3 pharmacies to get it filled because she refused to make the right calls and send the prescription. All this time I am having serious physical withdrawal symptoms. I finally was able to get my meds, to taper off, and start new. I called to get a refill and was told I needed to make an appointment. I did this, for the 27th. I called last week to confirm the date, no call back. I called to get my refill after saying I had made an appointment. No call back. Now I get a letter in the mail saying I owe 45 bucks for a missed appointment from the 20th. Here I am again without meds. A SECOND time due to the incompetence of the office staff. The front desk is completely worthless and the med lady just has zero bedside manner. Do the people working there realize this is a psychiatrists office? You're dealing with people with mental health issues and you're acting like complete jerks, refusing medications, and screwing people over on appointments. I think I'll be looking for a new doc, sad to say, NOT BECAUSE OF DR HICKS but because the staff are miserable. read more

Booked an appointment at Northlight Counseling a month ago, had my husband take the kids to preschool, arranged to be late to work, and navigated crazy Phoenix traffic for 60 minutes during rush hour only to have them tell me they made a mistake and didn't have me on their schedule. Now they can't get me in for another month! Ugh! I don't think I will be going back. They did apologize, but I will not risk having this happen again. The ONLY reason I am giving this a 1 star review is pure the receptionist at the front desk and the booking appt woman. I want to begin by saying, Dr Rockwell and Dr Bobbi Vogelsang are AMAZING. I have received wonderful help and will continue to do so. However, that being said, the two women who work in the office at the central Phoenix location are completely unprofessional and awful. The front desk girl, I have no idea what her name is, will be listening to music on her headphones while demanding your money first thing and being completely impolite as possible. She is always horribly rude and has no sense of customer service and I think that honestly she should be fired because anyone working that type of position with sensitive clients needs to have a soft touch. Today the experience I had with the booking/appointment receptionist was also completely inappropriate and unprofessional. She was on a personal phone call for at least 4 minutes and did not acknowledge me to make a second appointment until she was halfway done through the phone call then I guess it was acceptable for her to deal with me. Again the level of service from the front desk individuals is abhorrent. The services themselves and the doctors are wonderful. I cannot highly recommend them enough. It saddens me to give Northlight a low score based on reception service only. read more

Have been trying to reach this office for weeks. Finally when I get through the man answering the phone was rude even said to me to get off speaker phone which I wasn't on. Just let me know the connection is not working don't assume. Then I told him I lived in central Phoenix and he said I have no one taking new patients in Central Phoenix you will need to go to Chandler. Why would I go to Chandler ? He was just very robotic and if you're working in a counseling center have some compassion and understanding for people who call. Suggest to call in a few months or ask if I would mind driving to Chandler. Very disappointed. read more

I see Dr. Michael Rockwell every three months so that he can keep tabs on me and adjust my medication as needed. I originally went there because I was deeply depressed and unable to sleep after having lost my father. Dr. Rockwell has a great personality, and I have often left his office laughing. He diagnosed my problem quickly on my first visit. I have had many sessions with Karen Bischoff from his office. She has a wonderful method of treating PTSD, and I highly recommend her for that reasoning. It is great for people who have been sexually assaulted, victims of child abuse or domestic violence, or people who have been reared by one or more toxic parents. This is the best place I have ever been for counseling. read more

The office staff is always rude. It seems they are burdened to help you. You will pay a fee for walking into the office 30 seconds after your appointment time and not be seen. When you arrive on time you will wait 15-30 minutes past your scheduled appointment ROUTINELY. Your doctor will put you on medication you Depend on, when it comes time for a refill you can't speak to anyone. You have to leave a voice mail. Even when there is an issue with dosage or change in pharmacy there is no one to speak with, you MUST leave a voice mail and hope they get back to you in a few days read more
