Switch to this vet recently and they really helped me have a plan for my cat with allergies, which my last vet did not do. Very helpful.

Trigger warning!! Review is about euthanasia services. This is a somber review but a good one I hope as folks choose a good vet for their pet. Not only do they offer emergency hours, which can be helpful depending on the situation, but we unfortunately had to take advantage of their euthanization services recently. My older pet with health issues had started to decline and woke us up in the middle of the night with his crying - we knew it was time. We had the option of taking him to Ocean State for euthanasia services although that place is great for trivial life saving pet emergencies, they do not have the comfort one seeks for this type of thing. I seemed advice from Ocean State as they had treated him a few weeks ago and gave him more pain medication and laid by his side to wait for NorthPaws to open. As soon as they opened I called and was able to schedule one of two appointments, evidently they only have two as they allow family as much time as needed. They advised to call when we arrived and a technician would escort us in. We arrived and the technician was prompt and led us into a side room for this service, we all wore masks. It was a nice large room with a clean dog bed, couch and had a living room feel. We had a chance to chat with the technician and the doctor as well, we needed to ensure that this was the absolute right choice. They were great about answering our questions and providing support as well as explaining the process. The paperwork was minimal, sign a form and select how you would like Final Gift (the vendor they use) to complete cremation and memorabilia services. They even said we didn't have to pay that day and could just do it when picking up the ashes. We were given ample time with our pet & provided a button to press when we were ready to proceed. The first step is a sedative which relaxes the pet and puts them in a state as if they will go to surgery. We were relieved to see how relaxed our pet was after being in pain and were extremely emotional throughout the whole process - the technician and doctor were extremely professional, empathetic and made the experience comforting as hurt as we were. We were called when the ashes were ready for pickup and received a beautiful package delivered to our car by a staff member. We had also received a beautiful card from the doctor which included a heart made of seeds to plant in his memory. Additionally, they gave us his paw print. We are very pleased to have North Paws for our pets veterinary services and will continue to use them. read more

I have been taking my pets to Northpaws from the day they opened. Super happy with the team. Kind, professional, friendly. Great vets and techs. Dr. David Clark, the visiting surgical consultant performed OCL surgery on my dog in early November. Within 1 week the swelling had gone down. We are now at week10 and William looks great. He has regained his happy personality since the op and is obviously much happier. I would not hesitate to recommend this practice. I initially called here after my sister's French bulldog fell in our in-ground pool and was submerged under water for nearly a minute and thankfully they said to take him right in! However when we walked in there was a handful of others walking in, and a good sized line of people waiting- basically just a lot of chaos at the front desk. The true hero IMO is the vet tech (or the receptionist who works the front desk) as she was BEYOND amazing- wasting NO TIME, she noticed our puppy's labored breathing and grabbed him- taking him into the back triage area immediately! That same receptionist (vet tech- not sure her title) gave us a few quick forms to fill out and within minutes we were speaking to a veterinarian who told us Django (my sisters french bulldog) was stable and he didn't have a fever which was great. A veterinarian technician took a brief history and within another short period of time the actual veterinarian came in again and spoke with us regarding treatment and expenses. They were worried about water in his lungs and a few other things so they suggested x-rays, and bloodwork. What was nice is they gave us an estimate before they started all of the x rays and bloodwork. What bothered me is that they gave me an estimate of $497.00 for everything- which was right around my guess for the price of an emergency visit. Until another vet tech came in and tried to charge us upwards of $1000 for some "additional" testing! He was really PUSHY regarding the additional testing and treatment- he was actually pushy to the point where it was just plain RUDE. It was two additional tests that would have brought the bill over $1000. At this point we became REALLY confused because the vet said he was stable and now they are suggesting additional testing that sounds expensive and unnecessary and when I tried to decline this carbon dioxide testing he got a bit of an attitude with us- as if we were bad pet parents; which I didn't like at all, so minus a star for that terrible but quick experience. I tried to get more information but he rushed out of the room. So that income shaming was definitely a negative part of our less then pleasant experience. If he hadn't been so misleading and confusing I definitely would have gave 5 stars! In the end the bill STILL came to $714 or $724 so that estimate was extremely misleading and if anything is actually unethical! I can't imagine what a person who lives paycheck to paycheck would do thinking this would only cost $497 and then getting the actual bill for $714? But they charged us $724? They absolutely should NOT be doing estimates if they're going to be $224 in differences! Aside from the rude vet tech and the wildly inaccurate estimate I have to say NorthPaws was beyond amazing! I was very impressed with everyone here from the veterinarian to the veterinarian technician's and especially the receptionist at the front desk- who sprung into action quickly and was so helpful and friendly and just made my sister and I feel so much better about everything! I used to have an English Bulldog and I took him here for everything and they were always GREAT to my dog and to my family as well. Also this place is beautiful- since they did renovations it looks great in here! My parents also use this vet for their dogs! I'm not sure why I was charged $724 when the bill says $714.... read more

I had an overwhelmingly negative experience at NorthPaws in summer 2020. I took my dog there for a routine examine, a SNAP 4DX test (which tests for lyme, erlichia, anaplasmosis, and heartworm), and Lyme and Lepto vaccines. Due to COVID, I was not present in the examine room and waited in my car during the appointment. Dr. Holmes called to tell me my dog had tested positive for anaplasma and heartworm. I was very surprised given that my dog receives heartworm preventative. She had also been erlichia positive when I adopted her several years prior - supposedly dogs tend to stay positive for several years even after treatment with antibiotics, so I was surprised she hadn't tested positive for erlichia. Anyways, due to her heartworm-positive test result, Dr, Holmes suggested we do bloodwork and x-rays. Dr. Holmes felt the x-rays were in fact indicative of heartworm disease, so my dog was prescribed prednisone (which made her feel terrible - lethargic, frequent urination, excessive thirst). The bill for this visit was $700. The treatment for heartworm is quite difficult for the dog and NorthPaws quoted me around $1,500. I also spent an additional $150 on a phone consult with a Tufts veterinarian to discuss alternative treatment options. Long story short, after multiple additional tests that I requested and multiple visits back to NorthPaws, she is not heartworm positive. A repeat SNAP 4DX test was positive for anaplasma and erlichia, suggesting that the dot locations on the first test were simply misread. I then spent the last several months going back and forth with the hospital manager on how to remedy this error. They ultimately refunded me $400, plus $100 to be used on a later visit. Listen, I understand mistakes are made. But it is my opinion, given the obviousness of the mistake, the fact that my dog was prescribed drugs she didn't even need that made her feel lousy, the amount of time I spent researching heartworm and going back and forth on the phone with NorthPaws, and the $150 I spent at Tufts, NorthPaws should have simply refunded me for the full $700 I spent there. Not to mention I won't be taking her back to NorthPaws, $100 credit or not. read more

We have two Goldens and we are very pleased with the service of the Doctors and Staff. Everyone is very helpful and pleasant. I am very happy that Dr. Connelly explains everything and takes her time to answer my many questions. Also, This week my oldest needed to receive her booster and not to have her taken out of the car, which can be difficult, the technician came out to the car and administered the booster. Love this place! I bring my 2 bunnies and my doggie here. The staff is so nice. Only 4 stars though because often I have to wait more than 30 mins past my appointment time but I assume that because they make emergency appts for animals. I myself have had an emergency and they got me in and my dog stitched up real quick! We came today for a nail trimming for the bunnies. Love that the receipt you're given is so detailed and has the animals photo on it. Highly recommend this place! I drive 40 mins to get here I like them so much!!! read more

The only reason that I'm giving it a 2 is because the male vet he had on Sunday was very nice Unfortunately, I had to take him back on Tuesday and I dealt with a female vet, I believe that she was the owner, if there was a negative rating, I would have HIV her a negative rating. She was cold, rude & just plain sarcastic with me!! She put a catheter in my dog which means they also had to cut & then stitch his penis and the tech told me that he wasn't given pain meds. Not knowing that he was cut & stitched until the following morning, my heart broke for him!!When I called to ask why he wasn't given anything for pain before this procedure was done, the vet called me & said he was given something for pain!!! I asked why it wasn't listed on the bill her response was, " I did you a favor & didn't charge you because of your financial situation. " We own 4 homes in Florida & 1 here in R.I.... Financial situation??? I was & still am livid!!! Fast forward5 weeks later, my little guy was diagnosed with cancer & it's spread into his lymph nodes!! Shame on you!!!! read more

Stay away. They do not care about your pet.......they are supposed to practice veterinary medicine but what they really do is practice AVOIDANCE. . If I could give no stars, I would. I brought my pup in for a minor ear infection in the left ear, vet examined and said both ears had different types of infection. She recommended they do a treatment in the back and she would feel better in a few days . When the brought my pup back, the vet tech said that she may be a little hard if hearing for a few days. What? Why didn't they say that BEFORE the treatment. I take my girl home and she is Completely DEAF. Not hearing anything at all. She is so sad and withdrawn and wondering what the heck is going on. I contact Northpaws and nothing.. Radio silence as usual. I had just gone through the same no call back and avoidance when they made multiple errors on my mom 's dog but felt stuck because there are no vets accepting new patients. I was fortunate that my previous vet was caring and able to get my pup in to try and help us. I contacted the manufacturer of the company and a pharmacist returned my call promptly. Turns out my dog was not the proper candidate for the medication, as she has a simple ear infection and that I should have been told that deafness occurs if she were a candidate. The pharmacist said deafness is expected to last two months. At least this company cared enough to call. Northpaws- STOP avoiding your patients and own up yo your mistakes. Your policy seems to be avoidance and yet in your mission, you pride yourself on communication. When your tech reads the results for my mom's dog wrong and I point it out, When your tech preps the wrong dose of med for my moms dog, and when I finally have had so many errors that I am questioning the whole treatment plan, get a vet on the phone not the manager as if I am a disgruntled patient who the office staff need to be sheltered from. I was perfectly calm (much calmer than I should have been given the gravity of the situation) and needed a vet to call me and review the treatment plan. That's what I was asking for. Respond to the texts Respond to the calls. I texted that I was in tears and not one call back or response. That is inexcusable. And When I contact you stating that my dog is deaf because of your treatment- have the decency to get a vet to call me back and try to help! read more

Went to see vet as a secondary opinion for my Golden's "bad knee." Walking in my dog felt (or appeared) comfortable with the setting. Friendly staff and clean space. Met with Dr. Paradise, whom was very kind to both my dog and myself. Right off the bat he knew my dogs acl (or ccl) was torn. Where at the other vet they were going to put him under for X-rays. In explaining the injury he drew a picture. After going through the options he made it clear that surgery was not the only way to fix this and many ppl choose not to. Especially in my case where my dog does not seem to be in much pain. He was very reassuring with my decision. I have already changed vets and will be going to North Paws with all my animals. Prices may be more, but worth it at the end of the day. read more

I really like this place. My cat Tsunami is not by any stretch an easy patient (he usually has to be sedated even for a check-up), but the staff here are kind, gentle, and respectful regardless. I had a positive experience with Dr. Connolly when my cat suddenly got sick and needed fluids, and had a very positive experience with vet tech Chelsie. Chelsie listened closely to what I described, took notes on everything, and asked relevant questions -- She clearly was processing what I was saying and paying attention to the details, in spite of Tsunami being a complete brat. I've been meaning to write this review for a while, but I was reminded of it by an interaction I had today. I sent NorthPaws a message on their website at 11:48 this morning saying that I was moving this weekend, and provided my new address. Less than 20 minutes later I had a response from Beth thanking me for the update, letting me know she'd update it in the system, and wishing me good luck with the move. Wish it were that easy to update my address everywhere else. I also love the phone call check-ins they do when your pet is ill, the email appointment reminders (and happy birthday messages for Tsunami), and the beautiful building. read more

We started coming to North Paws about 7 years ago. Back then, you'd be hard pressed to find a vet with staff members and doctors who were cared more or treated your pets better. Sadly, they've gone completely downhill through Covid. It was expected and 100% understood initially as many businesses struggled to find their footing but after 18 months? They should be able to get their act together. They don't fill prescriptions, you can't get appointments for sick dogs and they refer even emergencies to Ocean State when they are open and are the primary doctor. My older dog who has recently received chemo treatments has an ear infection and it's been two days where I've waited for a prescription. I'm disgusted, and we will be looking for a new vet. read more

I knew my vet prefers ocean state for emergency 24/7 care, but when I came home to my shepherd laying on the floor, drooling, crying and unable to walk, I went for the closest emergency location that could help her. Because even though I'm a nurse that can handle codes, this is my fur baby we're talking about. People. If AT ALL possible, don't choose proximity over quality. I realize it's an emergency and you're panicking. Trust me. Take your fur baby to Ocean state for emergency care, they have what it takes (ie. I have been using this vet for about 3 years now after being warned about them before I made the decision to switch to them. I have a female boxer, a female pointer mix and just recently married and now have a female German Shepard that I inherited through marriage . My boxer has been limping and holding her rear right foot up in the air so I asked them to take a look at it. I was told to start using glucosamine and that it may be arthritis or hip problems. I purchased about 4 months worth and after a few weeks she got much worse . Called and asked to get her in again.... made me wait 4 days and also refused to give her any meds until she was seen again. Brought her back in and demanded x-rays which should have been done originally. Ended up having a torn ACL.... I Tell them we need to get her fixed so my bill for that checkup was a staggering high $400+ bill and was told approx $2900 more. I was suppose to wait for a call for a consult with a mobile Dr but that never happened. They called my wife and left her a message and what's worse is they just met her as I'm newly married. She's a PA and can't take calls or respond to text's while she works. She was able to get ahold of me to tell me to call them. I of course got voicemail.... 2 hrs later I finally got ahold of them. Arrogant and cocky and even had a problem pronouncing my name , they responded to me and blamed my wife for the reason they called her and nWhy didn't anyone return my call.... no answer. Needless to say I've been told by many to stay away and now I know why. I have a consult tomorrow with a new vet and pray he can get my dog in for surgery ASAP...,, Stay away from here.... incompetent staff and no one with any correct info there at all. read more

Kind, compassionate, and thorough. The facility is not only clean but bright and cheerful. My family has been taking our dogs there since we moved to Smithfield over 10 years ago. They have a private entrance/exit for people who are there to put their pets to sleep -which shows true compassion. I recently brought my cat there for the first time and was treated extremely well by the tech and Dr. Connolly. My cat was given a thorough exam, however, it was difficult to diagnosis the cause of her symptoms. I had a lot of options and a lot to think about, but they made the process so easy for me. They took the time to come up with a variety of options and spelled out the cost for all/some and then gave a series of recommendations. I liked that I was given honest options and control. My kitty is doing much better! After a week the tech called to inquire about my cat and check in. I will definitely be bringing both my cats here in the future for check-ups, vaccinations, etc. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone who has an animal that needs more than a checkup. Our puppy recently broke his leg and we brought him to NorthPaws. During the whole process, they kept telling us our dog is being a baby about the pain. They offered two suggestions, a cast or surgery. We chose the cast and followed the little instructions they offered. Upon a follow up visit they told us he never should have been put in a cast and that they weren't going to put the cast back on. They said his bone had moved. He had to go into emergency surgery. The person complained for over an hour that they were going to miss their lunch because of our dog. We brought the dog to another hospital and the surgeon said the bone had not moved but did need surgery. NorthPaws is expensive compared to other local veterinarians and while they are nice on the surface, if you have any issues they do not provide good guidance and they don't treat the owners or dogs well when they complain about your animal the whole time. I would not recommend them to anyone. read more

I took my very nervous anxious cat to North Paws, a couple days ago, I can not commend the vet and staff there enough, they made him feel so comfortable and safe. They were very efficient and gentle towards my cat, Theo, and I can't thank them enough, he had an awful experience with a local groomer which ended in him being hurt (sliced his paw from a picture frame)... from his stress. North Paws is extremely professional and compassionate towards animals. I will absolutely continue using them for Theos medical needs, after what happened to my cat, there is no one else I would trust for to take care of my precious cats needs. read more

My dog died today from being hit by a car driving much faster than the speed limit. I admit partial fault as our dog fence was not working properly. I at first was upset at the driver, but she was sincerely upset and quickly admitting driving too fast. She wasn't helpful but I believe her to be in shock. A close neighbor was responsive and we were able to get the dog in the car within a few moments. I tried to head for my trusted vet. However, after being a loyal customer of NorthPaws for 8 years she was denied service enroute to NorthPaws and told to head to Ocean State. I tried going to Ocean State but she died on a couple miles away from Ocean State. She may or may not be alive, but atleast she would have had a chance. My dog had a thyroid problem. NorthPaws brought me in for 3 different testings claiming she was outside their acceptable range (approximately $140 per session), which they drew blood from each time. On the last session, I confronted the doctor and he agreed I shouldn't be charged for that session. I think that there is a serious gap in Northern Rhode Island for emergency pet services, NorthPaws is NOT the answer. In life, vet services were more about making money for NorthPaws. I understand it's a business. But don't be so obvious about it. My wife will still take her dog there, I will not walk in there unless I piss on the front door. NorthPaws policies should change to help their clients in their time of need. read more

Awful bedside manners and poorly explained options. My dog went in with a spiral fracture and they called him a baby and a drama queen because he was 6 months old with a broken leg and in a lot of pain. They wanted him to walk on it the same night and called him a baby when it hurt him too bad to walk on a broken leg the same night he broke it. Also, the follow up Dr did nothing but complain about the fact she had to work her lunch hour because they did not schedule sufficient time to re-bandage his cast. In the end, she refused to treat my dog, charged me double for the exact same x-rays I had in the first visit and then charged me $50 to put his cast back on so poorly it fell off before I could drive 30 min to Ocean State. Initially they suggested I see an orthopedic surgeon. However, they never explained that one option was to just pack him up and drive to Ocean state where he could be seen within 24 hrs by an orthopedic surgeon. They explained that I would have to schedule one later in the week and I had a little puppy in a lot of pain. From my perspective the only option I had to help my dog that night was to put a cast on him. They explained a cast would be $800 and 6-8 weeks to heal and surgery would be $2500 min and 4 weeks to heal. I thought as long as I had to put a cast on that night, I may as well see how he does with it. They explained I needed to go back in 10 days for more x-rays and re-bandage. When I went back for a 9:00 am appointment the Dr immediately told me I needed surgery without even doing a follow up x-ray or evaluating him. Then I asked for a follow up x-ray just to see how his bones were. She started complaining about having to take her lunch to do this (even though I was told it would be done in my follow up). I had to leave my dog till noon and then I got an earful again when I picked him up about how she had to miss her lunch (BTW I missed mine too) and she refused to treat him further because a cast is not an appropriate treatment for this fracture. I had no alternative but go to pay for another emergency room visit at Ocean State. The initial emergency room doctor should have refused treatment and sent me to Ocean State immediately. This is my first dog and first emergency so I really was not aware of how helpful it would have been to go to Ocean State initially and they didn't suggest during the emergency. Very poorly communicated and executed. I am now out $1200 for NorthPaws and had to start treatment completely over at Ocean State. Meanwhile my dog was the victim. read more

grossly misdiagnosed my dog. repeatly called dr williams explaining that my dog is not eating or drinking for a week. she had prescribed an antibiotic for her stating her blood work showed a uti. kept insisting she does not want to eat or drink because she has a uti and kept pushing a hospital stay and they would get her to eat. got a 2nd opinion a week after that. simple chest x-ray showed my beautiful pet full of lung cancer. died in 2 weeks. north paws had major symptoms i kept telling dr williams and she passed it off. stay away from this facility read more

Update. The owner of north paws Doctor Paradise called me to listen to my concerns about not being able to get my pet into there facility on the same day. It was nice to receive a phone call from him and he ensured me that this issue is being worked on. I will post again in the future when I actually need to make a appointment for the same day. We recently moved to RI from the west coast, and hadn't found a vet yet. Last night, my dog was acting pretty ill, so I knew we had to take her somewhere. What a blessing this place was. First- they were open, and are open emergency hours. Second- someone always answers the phone. Third- I called at 6:30p, and "emergency hours" start after 7. The gal was kind enough to offer me their last non-emergency appointment of the evening.... She totally could have told me that I had to pay the emergency rate. What a nice honest bunch of people. It is sad that we needed an emergency to find our vet- but such a blessing that we stumbled upon such a wonderful place. read more
